This is an AMC movie theater that is long past its prime and needs a major overhaul. It's rather obvious the carpeting is worn beyond any cleaning that might save it and it needs replacement. Many of the seats in the individual theaters are badly worn and some are broken and also need to be replaced. While the prices seemed fair compared to other theaters I've been to, especially those where I live back East, about the only good thing I can say is that this AMC theater complex in Rapid City, SD is better than no movie theater at all. I've been here a couple of times but the only good things were the movies themselves. In one movie I actually thought I was heat stroking and ran to the bathroom and panted. I had stomach cramps and had to put cold water on my face. I then walked out of the restroom and yelled down the hall (we were the last movie of the night) to turn on the damn AC that we were all dying. In my opinion, this theater needs an update bad. The seats in theater 5 were rough and dated. It was hard to get comfortable in them. The AC kept kicking on and off throughout the whole 2 1/2 hour movie. At times it was so loud you could barely hear the people talking in the movie. The women's restroom desperately needs an update. I will start by saying I really like most of the staff, they are friendly but since the theater became AMC, it went down hill. Its ALWAYS hot in the theater, if you ask them to cool it off, they pacify you with "yea, yea" but it never gets any better. I left the last movie I went to after asking twice. I was literally sweating and the couple next to me said they complained about the heat too. Now you fill your own drinks and popcorn which actually takes MORE time while you wait in line for a Johnny preteen to choose from 100 different sodas. The way it is set up now is a disaster. Shame on you AMC for ruining our once awesome theater. As I said in the beginning, "most" of the staff is great. One young girl with brown hair and glasses can really ruin your movie night. Once I went back to refill my popcorn, I am a premium Stubbs member and she wanted me to go back and get my receipt until another young man who is exceptionally friendly, who knows as well as the girl that I watch a movie almost weekly, was business wise and said "yes" he has a receipt. I thought this theater would be more than it is. New release, very small screen. Chairs rocked at least. They weren't the greatest. Concessions was a breeze to get through. The soda fountain had a ton of choices for drinks. My only qualm was the popcorn wasn't available for a refill for the late show. We purchased our tickets through Fandago. Scanner was down. Nice lady was able to type it in. No big issue. My biggest issue is the theater seemed pretty run down and still charged the regular premium prices. I am pretty spoiled now by our local theater with dream loungers, picking your seat online, enough arm room, and a concessions that stays open later. This place had none of those. I try to avoid this theatre at all costs. I'm not sure I've ever had a pleasant experience from any of the times I've been there in the past. 9/10 times the floors are very sticky. The seats in the auditoriums are incredibly uncomfortable. The sound and picture are always far below basic standards. In addition to all this, while my wife and I were here on Tuesday evening to see Everything Everywhere All at Once (great film), throughout the entirety of the film, there was a small green light clearly visible behind the screen. This was incredibly distracting but none too surprising based on previous experiences. Absolutely would not recommend this theatre. The best theatre in town is the Elks Theatre on 6th street, but if you can't see your movie there, go to Golden Ticket if you must. The experience there isn't much better unfortunately read more

AMC is spiraling diwnward. The theaters are all freezing! They will not turn on The heat until you complain. The amc A-list is a joke. Lines are just as long and tonight we went to the A-list line and were told to go stand behind people at the regular line. The theaters are dirty and smell bad. And the bathrooms in the main area have been closed for a month so there's a long walk to the handicapped bathrooms in the other end of the theatre. This theater has comfortable adjustable seating, a great screen and sound, great popcorn, snacks and employees who are very courteous and helpful. The parking lot is well lighted . Perfectly good theater in Rapid City, SD. Great parking, small crowds, and clean theaters. The high school-age boys that came in (CLEARLY under 17 for a restricted movie) were loud and annoying until more people trickled in. It's a little hard to get to for people not from the area. We went to see World War Z at an afternoon matinee. It opened about a week ago. The movie itself was pretty good. That's just me. What you will notice if you look closely is how horribly disgusting the place is. Do they ever clean the seats? EVER? They were so soiled I didn't want to sit in any seat. Once you do sit down, the warmth of your body heats all of the popcorn (and other) oils on the seat and it starts to smell. Bad. Utterly disgusting. You will want to shower after you visit this joint. The previews for this PG13 movie were way over the top. Several horror and slut flicks with the volume cranked to 100%+. I like loud movies, but this was utterly ridiculous. We had a solid 23 minutes of previews. I was honestly worn out by the time the movie started. There was a problem with screen brightness. It was overly dim, almost like looking through a pair of sunglasses. Full daylight scenes still presented a dull dimmed experience. That was irritating throughout the movie. Since there aren't any good options in Rapid City, my days of going to the theater are over. I can tell they aren't making a profit. People don't want to pay incredible prices for this kind of service. For the same price I can own the movie on Blu-ray in a month or so. They charge more for tickets in spite of the fact that they have cut their labor considerably by making the customers fill their own drinks. The least they could do is provide more of the self serve machines so that you don't stand the longest in yet a third line waiting for people to choose from a gazillion flavors and screw up 3 times before they get it right! ---This theater doesn't care about deaf and hearing impaired customers!!---My family and I visited our son who's based at Ellsworth AFB. On 3/16 we saw Captain Marvel. I am deaf with speech. I speak well but I can't hear movies or TV without captioning. The movie was advertised as "Closed Captioned for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing." If it wasn't advertised as such, we wouldn't have gone. When the movie started, the CaptionView device wasn't displaying any captions. My husband went to get some help and talked to a young kid employee that didn't have a clue. Husband was standing out there missing a lot of the movie while they ran around like chickens with their heads chopped off. I went out there to see what was going on. The kid's attitude was like "well if she can speak, she can hear the movie fine and it's not a big deal." My husband told him that I can't hear what's being said and asked him "how would you like to sit through a movie for 90 minutes not knowing what's going on?" We went back to the movie (about 20 minutes missed). A manager came in and told my husband that their captioning system was down. She told him the movie was really loud and that I should be able to hear it anyway. He told her that it doesn't matter how loud it is and it doesn't help. She said "Here's 2 free tickets. You and your wife can go to a movie." I am so angry about this for the following reasons: 1. If AMC is advertising movies as closed-captioned for the deaf, they should have their system working and check it to make sure it works. Do a test run before running the system each day. 2. Don't make assumptions about a person's disability especially if you don't have a clue about the disability 3. The theater didn't refund our money. They're so cheap that we got 2 tickets instead of 5. We don't want two tickets to come back to a theater that doesn't have a working captioning system and we're not even from Rapid City. This theater clearly has a "I don't care about my customers" attitude and it's backed up by all the negative review here on Yelp. read more

Awful. Where to begin? The line for the understaffed box office moves very slowly. They changed the popcorn sizes and prices. Now the Medium bag is called a "Small" and costs more than the old Medium used to. $5-6 for the smallest bag of bland, styrofoam-like popcorn is rediculous. Typical concessions experience: me - "Small plain popcorn and medium Diet Coke." Slow Moving Concession Worker - "Would you like to make the Small popcorn a Medium for $1.40 more?" me - "no." SMCW - "Would you like to make your drink a Large for $.90 more and get unlimited refills." me - "no." SMCW - "Would you like any candy or nachos?" me - "no." SMCW - "Did you want butter on that popcorn" me - "no. I said plain." SMCW - "oh....What did you want to drink again?" me - "diet." TAKE THE ORDER AND FULFILL IT! After I ordered once, I actually heard one of them say, "Would you like to UPSALE? I mean,..." Quit trying to squeeze that extra $.90 out of people and sell them what they ask for and maybe they won't STOP GOING TO YOUR THEATRE ENTIRELY. btw, the candy selection is limited and contains imitation Hot Tamales that are so awful, they will make you want to die. Also, the parking lot is full of potholes. Deep, deep, potholes you could fish in. They get filled with gravel occasionally, but always return bigger and meaner. They also feature the most rediculous number of pre-trailer commercials. I especially hate the 4 minute National Guard commercial featuring Three Doors Down. Citizen Soldier! No! They do have two things going for them. They have stadium seating and are they only first-run theatre in town, so they get away with incompetance. I used to see at least one movie per week there, and now refuse to. At one movie per week, for 28 weeks, and assuming $8.50 per ticket X 2(my wife), plus concessions of approximately $9; since the first of the year, they have lost $728 of my business that I am happy to take to the Elks, Netflix, or Hollywood Video. read more

Pretty awful, everything about it. The lobby is the dirtiest lobby I have ever seen. It is DISGUSTING!! The bathrooms are dirty, and the movie theater itself it pretty annoying. Amazing! They are now the Carmike 10 by the way, they added 3 theaters a few years ago. The box office worker was quick and polite, the doorman was helpful and concessions was fast and efficient. My popcorn was fresh and delicious. Management kept everything running smoothly and chose their employees perfectly. As another review said, they did however upsale to me in concessions. But its their job to do that, so I didn't mind. The theaters were clean and refreshing and the quality of the picture was much better than that of other local theaters. I HIGHLY suggest this theater to anyone looking for a good day at the movies! read more

The effects of a monopoly in a small city - I'm in a Carmike Cinema in Rapid City, SD. They own both multiplexes in town. Ticket price in this small town is $10.25 (I paid $8.25 in the similar sized Davenport IA recently). Pop price $6.10 for a soda. While prices at movies are up there everywhere it is amazing what this Carmike chain can get away with charging in such a small city - a good study in monopoly pricing. It is also clear they have not put much money in this place - bathrooms are run down and old, lobb small, etc. But when you are a monopoly, why would you when you can milk those that pay with no other options around? read more
