Now and for quite a long while my favorite movie theatre. I saw my last movie before the pandemic here went until the closed the doors . They have a fantastic selection of movies two theaters Little Roxie and Big Roxie. Many film festivals and just great movies which I love . Thankfully now they own their building so at least they will be there for the future something to count on. I even went to a rent party here the movie which didn't matter was The last picture show. I try to visit the movies at least twice a month . A lifelong passion. Movies since a child have always been my thing . The Roxie is the only continually running theatre in the country. read more

Amazing, gritty small independent movie theater. It's been around since the early 1900s in different cinema forms and is a Mission District institution frequently hosting events and showing interesting films. Inside is very different from modern theaters, there is a single aisle and 4 chairs per row. The seats are lower than normal and if you are sitting near the wall it's very hard to get out of you want to use the bathroom. The screen size is also much smaller, some people probably have TVs that are about the same size. I find it more intimate. There is a small concession serving popcorn with real butter, coffee, coffee, soda, and candy. The lobby is very small so you'll be waiting outside in a line until your show time. I saw a weird German animation here "Cathedral of New Emotion" and the new Slam Dunk movie when that came out, nice spot for a movie and then easily walkable to fun and food before or after. read more

In Dreams: A Tribute to David Lynch is an awesome event currently happening at the Roxie Theater, and we couldn't miss it. We attended the 35mm screening of the cult classic Eraserhead, which began with an animated short film, Asparagus by Suzan Pitt, the entire experience putting us in a lynchian mood at the Big Roxie this past Tuesday evening. The historic theater is nostalgic, with just a small lobby and concessions stand serving a limited menu of snacks and drinks, and two all gender restrooms which formed quite a line before the show (the movie, by the way, began 15 minutes after the listed showtime). The seating in the auditorium is simple and comfy enough with lightly padded back and seat cushions, as well as drink holders on the armrests. Great sound and picture quality too. Especially with the range of incredible films shown here, this charming theater is a treasure to have in SF. read more

The Roxie TheTer can't fail (like Rudy) Theater is a refuge of good movies, rare enough on a big screen but vital in today's world.

I work at a school and the Roxie was kind enough to rent out the entire theater to our students with their choice of what movie they wanted to watch (dvd). Inside was nice and clean, and we got there early enough for all the kiddos to purchase popcorn and other goodies. They also allowed outside food in, which was pretty cool. read more

35 mm showings are great. Did a free screening for the community. Cheap concessions but tastes amazing.

INTIMATE THEATER SHOWING "REAL" MOVIES There is a lost connection between the audience and movie theaters. That has to do with the type of movies playing at the theater. I'm not a nostalgic, but I yearn for the days going to theaters. Last year I started going to the movie theaters to watch some classic movies. Why this theater? There was a Three Colors trilogy (Blue, White, and Red) - films that were made in the 1990s and set mostly in Paris - showing in early September. In a span of less than a week I saw those movies at Roxie Theater. Besides the movies to really enjoy your theater experience you need feel comfortable in your seat especially if the movies are over two hours. For those three days I never had complaints. Going to Roxie Theater to watch movies you get a different type of audience who really appreciates exceptional, quality movies whether they're classics or contemporaries such as the Three Colors trilogy. read more

I used to love this theater, and was a member for years. Unfortunately, in the last year they've gone balls deep on the anti-Israel thing, so they've alienated people like myself who can see both sides. As I write this, they're currently showing three movies. All three are Israel bashing films by activists without balance or nuance. Maybe that's their audience now. If so, that ain't me. read more

Wow! First time I seen a movie here and it's an adorable one screen neighborhood gem with old school vibes. It's a nice throwback to the golden age of movie going days. I love the cartoons about visiting your concession stand before movie starts. I haven't been to a movie house over a year since the Covid 19 pandemic started. It is one of the rare And the oldest continuously operating movie theaters in the United States. Sometimes you just don't want to go to a major movie complex which is a giant box literally without much character or personalization. The seats are comfortable and movie was great. I saw the Michelle Yeoh movie here and it's very well done fantasy, comedy, drama storyline. Makes one think of Spider-Man's multi universes. But Family is the heart of the "Everything Everywhere All at Once" movie. The Roxie Theater is located at 3117 16th Street at in San Francisco's historic Mission District. Great location for the 22 Fillmore and variety food options. Always support local if you can. read more

Great local theater with curated off-beat flicks. You are in the heart of the mission so grabbing a bite before hand is very easy. 2 single occupancy bathrooms on either side of the lobby. The history of this theatre is really cool so definitely check it out! My partner and I came here to watch an anime movie because we're weebs! And I was surprised how packed it was. I really like the charm of this theatre (110 yrs old) and how you can drink some affordable beers. I like that it doesn't feel commercialized and has a more artsy/surrounded by film nerds vibe. My only gripes were how loud it was, they need to turn down the volume like a few notches. And the seats aren't super ergonomic. They don't have neck support which is brutal for folks like me who get back pain from sitting all day. read more

I came here for a movie premiere and had a great time! This was my first time every coming to this theater. I've heard of it for a very long time and didn't expect to be impressed. But I was. It's a rather small theater with a cute vibe. I loved the red carpet and the snacks they had inside. This theater is old school and reminds me of the theaters that I attended as a kid. The movie was easy to see and the sound was good. Additionally, I know that there were a lot of people in there and it didn't feel too crowded. I liked the candy bars, the popcorn, the sodas, and so on. I probably wouldn't come here again because it is in a part of San Francisco that I don't visit much. But if I were in the area and a movie was playing that I wanted to see, I would go. read more

It cannot be overstated; you -need- to get there early for concessions. Earlier than the suggested 15 minutes. I do not know what people were ordering, because all of them were taller than me, but I did actually get tired of waiting, and instead of grabbing a beer went in to grab a seat. And this was a Tuesday... Also. Big Roxie lives up to its name; it is a looooooong theater. I ended up in the back, and I did not feel like I was immersed in the movie. If you end up in the last few rows, I suggest bringing someone to make out with. Somehow, even though I felt like the experience would have been better with opera glasses, given my distance from the screen, it was still super loud. Like too loud, like glad-I-brought-my-Loop-earbuds loud... I kinda only want to give this place three stars, but I do want to support local theaters, and I don't want to drag down their rating just because of my lackluster experience. So next time I will be earlier, up front, inebriated, and hopefully not alone. :P read more

Fantastic repertory theater. Screenings always have respectful audiences and their selection of films is top notch.

My boyfriend and I literally ran to the theater since finding parking took so much longer that we expected. On our tickets, it said the doors to the theater closed within the first 15 minutes, but we were still able to get in after the first 17 minutes (lol). We really enjoyed our film! Roxie Theater offers movies that you don't really hear about- I only heard of our movie, Revolution of Our Times, because a friend told me about it & about the showing here. It was probably one of the best documentaries/film I have ever seen. The theater is definitely old, but it does the job. Despite the theater being old, I think I read somewhere that they renovated the seats as they were quite comfy! The staff at the theater were also super nice. I only docked one star because parking is impossible (but we were in SF, so I get it- parking is hard to come by there in general). Get there 30-60 min before your film so you can find parking and walk comfortably to the theater. read more

I love the Roxie Theater! They show the quirkiest movies that you can't see elsewhere. And I'm told that it looks exactly the same from someone who worked there a decade ago. There are technically two theaters with the cocktail bar Dalva in the middle. I have only chosen movies in the Little Roxie for some reason. It's a small, intimate theater that only fits maybe 40 people? It's pretty old school and old, but that's the charm of the Roxie! There are concessions for sale, and the employees are chill. It's indie and cute and super San Franciscan and whatever. I've seen some interesting films here, the bathrooms are always clean and service is good. Something I don't understand though is the very limited selection of Spanish language films (like, one RoxCine film per month?) despite its location in the Mission. Also, only the films with free screenings include a synopsis in Spanish on the RoxCine website (RoxCine being their selection of Spanish language films). Why is it that? Do they perceive some correlation between being a Spanish speaker and not being able to pay for a ticket, but if you can pay for a ticket then you can probably understand English? I noticed this when I shared a film's page on the Roxie website with my Spanish speaking friends to gauge interest. I had to find the film's description on a Spanish-language film site. Kind of a faux pas if you ask me, to say the least. read more

I love the uncomfortable-ish older theatre seats (compared to modern day cinemas) and I love the affordable snacks and most of all, I love attending a movie with people who like good films. The Roxie is sparkling like a shiny new penny! I grew up in the Mission District and have, over decades seen it go from a neighborhood place to a sadly rundown old gal to this newly revived gem. I don't live in The Mission anymore so I was skeptical about The Roxie, due to me memories of the location that I had, but I was excited to come in for the 50th Anniversary of Harold & Maude. I've never seen it on the big screen! (Note: If you haven't ever seen Harold and Maude then you are in for a treat, worthy of several viewings. I learn something new each time I see it) Back to The Roxie... The seats are all brand new. Roomy comfy, and rows spaced far enough apart to keep you from becoming an accordion-person for two hours. The Snack Bar caters to adult tastes; beer, wine, popcorn, and some other gourmet goodies. The Roxie is a hometown-small town feeling kind of place. The staff is courteous, the bathrooms are clean as a whistle, and the auditorium swept and tidy. In a world of multiplexes, mega-movies and mall environments, The Roxie harkens back to the kind of theaters we grew up with. Yesterday night I was fortunate to be invited to a preview screening of a documentary film "For Sama." The film was story-telling at it's finest. A young woman Waad is in Aleppo, Syria for school when her life is caught in the deadly trap that was the Syrian conflict. Bashir regime systematically attempts to surpress the Free Syria movement. He allows Russian fighter planes shoot and bomb areas of Aleppo that are concentrations of the Free Syria population. The cinematography is spectacular given the Waad is using a hand-held videocamera. There are aerial shots which indicate the use of a drone or two. You will witness the horror almost first hand. You are as close to seeing what is on the ground: destruction, the bodies of victims, chaos in the street. And yet you also are uplifted by the birth of an infant after the mother had gotten shot and is brought into the makeshift hospital. And later on in the story we learn that the Russians have started bombing of the hospitals. 8 of the 9 hospitals are destroyed. Sama, the baby girl of Waad, has an indomitable spirit. She grows over the course of the film and we feel apprehension that any moment Sama might be lost to the conflict, another life deemed collateral damage. I recently went to the Roxie Theater to see the film "Nico Icon" about the life of the German model turned musician. The Roxie holds about 200 people & just about any seat is good. The bathroom is clean. I loathe the majority of modern day mainstream blockbuster movies w/ big budgets & heaps of special effects. I like the movies that are shown here as they are more my speed. This month the Roxie will show "Buffalo '66" which I love along w/ the classic Spike Lee film "Malcom X" which has a bumping soundtrack. This month the Roxie will also show "Leonard Cohen: Bird on a Wire" & "Burroughs: the Movie" about the life of beat author William S. Burroughs. The Roxie is also a short walk from the stellar vegan Asian Fusion restaurant Indochine. There were introductions about the film prior to it's showing. Nice touch yet the sound quality & acoustics could have been better on the initial introductions yet the sound quality of the actual film was just fine. "Nico Icon" was a brilliant film albeit on the dark side about the legend who was a part of one of my favorite albums of all time "Velvet Underground & Nico". I enjoyed the few solo albums by Nico I have heard of her notably Chelsea Girl. Nico was a lover of both Jim Morrison & Iggy Pop. Compared with a few other local theaters, Roxie's programs are bold and international. Although they play several regulars a lot, it doesn't reduce its effort to promote intercultural literacy and understanding. It is a form of education. I would encourage the team to curate more movies featuring some director what we don't normally get the chance to know and watch, Nuri Ceylán, Hshou XiaoXian, to name a few. read more

The place is great and I couldn't leave them less stars with good conscience, but it must be said (hopefully they have someone reading these reviews): they don't adjust their screen border for movies with different aspect ratios. If you know the difference this makes to your film going experience than you know that this is unacceptable. Some big chain theaters have adopted this practice, but our small beautiful independent classic theaters like these, who fight for the integrity of film in every other way, should take more care. Also their projector has a dead pixel, but that's a much more expensive fix than the correct aspect ratio borders. read more

Of course this carries the bias of the Yelp event. Freeway was an excellent film and the Roxie was an excellent venue for the viewing. As the management mentioned, they're hoping the renovations will continue t oadd to the funky , quirky charm. My only half star off gripe is for the old seats (going to be upgraded) which are a tad small. My shoulders hung over the adjacent seats and I was lucky the one to the left had no one in it while the one on the right had someone who's used to my shoulder being a pillow. I've frequented the neighborhood for years now and am really quite unsure why this would be my first time seeing a movie here. For shame eh? Well if they keep showing cult classics like Freeway and finish their renovations I'll definitely be a repeat customer! read more

I really love that this theater keeps the quirky and independent film scene alive. I came here to see Fantastic Fungi since it was the only theater playing the movie. The ticket was ~$15. I bought my ticket online about a week before the screening, which was good because the theater was sold out that night. It's a no frills type of place with two theaters. This isn't a big consideration other than I was really looking forward to having a beer (which I had read in other reviews that they serve beer here) but apparently it's only if you are in the Big theater. The Little theater (which is actually a door or two down from the main theater marquee) serves popcorn, a few snacks, and canned non-alcoholic drinks. There are two gender neutral restrooms. The screen is pretty small (relative to other theaters) but the room only seats like 30 people. Each row has one strange loveseat in addition to multiple standard seats. This caused some confusion for people who arrived after the movie had started since they weren't sure if they were to share. I don't know that I would go out of my way to come here but based on the films they have coming soon I think I will definitely be back. read more

What a fun evening! It was so exciting to be in a movie auditorium that was sold-out, full, and energetic to see a film. This was their annual showing of my all-time favorite film Harold and Maude, and I was thrilled to see the theater full. The concession food were traditional, yet high quality. The patrons were aware of their surroundings and the importance of the event. The seats must have recently been refurbished, and the sound system updated because, though the film is from the seventies, the quality of the movie experience was more up-to-date than I might have expected. There is a formidable list of films upcoming, so you have lots of opportunities to patronize this classic theater, without suffering the indignities of an "old" movie house. read more
