Went to see the new Led Zeppelin movie in IMAX. Without a doubt the worst IMAX experience I've ever had. The movie was scheduled to start at 4pm, only to show 20 minutes of trailers before actually starting the movie. The seats were outdated and so crammed together it left no legroom and sharing an armrest along with cup holders is something I've never experienced in any other IMAX theater.The audio system was also completely outdated and was far below the standards of every other Imax theater I've ever visited. Even their "high definition"screen was far less than high definition. This was the most disappointing experience in an IMAX theater I've ever had by far. It's probably a lot of nostalgia talking, but I've always liked this theater. Sure, you get your sticky floors every once in a while and the seating could use a facelift, but I think it also has a lot going for it: the employees are nice/helpful/efficient, it has a unique charm about it that doesn't fit the cookie cutter mold of a normal theater, good location right off the highway, it has probably the most showtimes of any theater in the area, and it's not bad ticket prices if you choose a matinee or a Tuesday (with a yearly stubs membership, which I'd highly suggest). The bathrooms aren't the newest but they're usually kept decently clean in my experience. Also, I love how huge and open the lobby is, it gives off a prestigious vibe and has always filled me with a sense of wonder. I like the AMC app, it's got some bugs to be worked out sometimes, but as long as you have a stubs membership the online ticket convenience fees are waived so you can buy them anytime beforehand and not stress about your movie being sold out. That's happened to me before in the past so I personally love the new assigned seating system. I will say the food is insanely overpriced, but unfortunately that's every theater nowadays. I just eat beforehand because I can't bring myself to pay that much for something I could make at home for $1. I can't remember having any bad experiences here minus a few times where the floors were sticky. I've seen countless movies here over the years and especially with $6 Tuesday movies (with a stubs account) that's probably not going to change anytime soon. read more

Very large theater. Everything was easily accessible, and the staff was very polite and cordial. Noticed right off the bat, how clean, and tidy everything has been kept. Definitely a sign of good management. The theaters are very spacious, however, the seating compared to other theaters (i.e., Marcus) is very cramped and confining. Definitely need to update the seating! The theater's sound quality is perfect. Concessions were a bit pricey, but then again, what isn't in today's economy? I don't go to a lot of movies in the theaters anymore just because it's so expensive for a couple of hour's worth of entertainment. However, I really do enjoy seeing movies in the theater, so occasionally I'll take the family. When I say it's expensive, I mean it's expensive in general. It's not any more expensive here than in other theaters I've visited. Yes, you are going to pay an ungodly amount for popcorn, pop, snacks, etc. It's a movie theater. It's always been that way. It's just that the cost of everything is going up so are the prices here. You are able to buy tickets online and then they have a quick pass section for busy nights. Just bring your confirmation or the Credit/Debit card you used to make the purchase and you can print out the tickets right there without having to wait for a cashier. On busy nights this is very useful. The theaters are generally clean; if it's a busy night it can get a bit sloppy. The chairs are comfortable enough. A cup holder in each arm and the arm rests do raise so you can cuddle up to that loved one if you want or if it's not busy so you can lounge some more. Ticket prices vary based on time, style of show, age of patron, etc. So if you want to know how much tickets are, you need to look it up or call in advance. read more

The best part was the incredibly nice gentleman at the concession stand (Sebastian) he was friendly and super helpful when getting my popcorn and refill after the show. Since the change from Kerasotes to AMC, the prices have changed so I would recommend looking at the website for the details (lots of specifics, but does include movies for $5 M-Th). Other than the pricing change and a large AMC on the side of the building, nothing else seemed different. There are no IMAX screens (sorry, David T.), but they do have 3D options for select movies (which is an extra $3). If a movie is big for 3D (like: Transformers or Avatar), they will have less time options for non-3D viewings (Yeah, yeah, I'm a whiner. I have contacts for a reason; sometimes I just don't want to be wearing glasses). Theaters are relatively clean, as were the bathrooms. I drove about 30 minutes to be told there weren't any seats available. Selection of movies is about the only thing I'd recommend this place based on. The theaters are generally pretty dirty with well-worn chairs that, while they may have been state-of-the-art years ago, leave a lot to be desired in the age of recliner seating, as well as just a general musk of popcorn and the weird odors any public place will accumulate over time if not properly maintained. The theater always seems busy, but that's because they're understaffed by employees who seem genuinely unhappy or annoyed that they have to be there. I've never had an issue with general presentation of the films, although their IMAX screen is one of those bare-minimum converted standard screens that AMC uses to upcharge for that particular format - yes, you still get the full IMAX picture, but visiting the legit unconverted IMAX theaters in Batavia or Chicago will absolutely put this screen to shame. I don't feel like I need to address ticket pricing or concessions, since concessions have been overpriced for years, and ticket pricing has been moot for me since AMC started A-List. Parking is fantastic - if they kept the lot in any kind of decent shape...seriously, you could bust a new suspension driving around the parking lot for more than 10 minutes. And holy shit are people in Rockford just the biggest bunch of annoying assholes to watch movies with. I've been to multiple showings that have been disrupted by someone's loud attempts at clever comments, couples having hushed arguments, people answering their phones at full volume and staying in the theater, an incredibly rude woman mocking her too-young-to-see-this-movie daughter for being afraid of the clown in It, old women having a full-volume conversation about a movie's politics, a girl loudly translating Russian dialogue for her boyfriend despite the movie having subtitles, and every kind of sniggering, shitty, constantly-lighting-up-their-phone person you can imagine. The staff here will not lift a finger to expel any of the patrons - one assumes this is because the air of entitlement in Rockford runs so high that the misbehaving patrons will just state that their ticket money entitles them to behave however they damned well please - unless you get upset and ask for a refund / to speak to a manager. Places like Showplace 16 are absolutely the epitome of why people just prefer to stay home these days - it has less to do with cost, and more to do with entitled, shitty audience members. If you're going to a show here, aim for movies late in their run or at least try to go early in the day during the week, when theaters are at least sparse enough to give yourself some clearance from the shitheads watching movies here. Or just drive to the suburbs (or even DeKalb) where the theater management takes disruptions seriously. Honestly, the only thing to recommend this theater based upon is the fact that, by sheer screen volume, they tend to get some obscure movies that don't otherwise make the rounds in this particular area. Of course, assuming one has access to the greater Chicago area, that route offers a similar amount of options and is just in general better - the theaters are far more maintained and, surprisingly, prices on concessions run cheaper when there's more local competition. But the real hook to seek out other, nicer theaters is that the audiences won't be a tenth as shitty as those who seek out AMC Showplace 16 in Rockford, Illinois. read more

The theaters are very clean, popcorn was fresh and well seasoned. All systems were go. My only complaint is a general AMC problem, their rewards card is a rip off. AMC theaters are all pretty similar but some things do stand out about theater. First of all it should be known that this is not a REAL IMAX theater. It may qualify the standards for an Imax but anyone who has been to a real Imax theater knows the one in Rockford is not. The concession stand is decent and they are relatively quick. They also are efficient in that if there are many people in line, they end up opening more registers. The popcorn is very standard not too salty or buttery. The nachos are the standard peel packs, but they are stingy with the cheese.....I mean come-on, so close to the WI border, they should give at least 2 cheese dipping containers. They do keep the jalapenos near the condiments section so you don't have to ask the people behind the counter. Overall a decent theater. Like others have said, the STUBS membership is definitely worth the $12/year. If you want to skip the lines, buy your tix in advance and pick them up up at the little kiosk. I'm not going to buy their expensive tickets and then be told where I can sit during a matinee with less than 50 people in it. The place and service are good overall. I do have a problem with the line or "lines" to get tickets. They are suppose to separate regular and "premier" customers in different lines. The last few months, every time I've been there everyone forms in a single line and no employee cares to clarify anything to people. This is probably the closests theater next to the one in Machesny Park. This place used to be a very popular place to come watch moves until the price hike and business started to slow downs bit. Over the past couple years, they have become more up to date with a couple IMAX theaters and more 3D showings. They have kiosks to buy tickets now. The concession stand food is alot better now with pizza, curly fries, etc... and even an all you can drink self serve soda machine. With their Stubz membership, you can accumulate points and get discounts on movies, and even concession items. The theater is clean for the most part, the actual seats are semi comfortable but my only complaint is the smell of butter on the seats which they can't really do much about because it probably soaked through the seats over the years. Overall, a pretty standard theater with a good selection of movies and concession food. read more
