American Gym is the hidden gym of Costa Mesa. I happily went here for years until changing gyms to workout with my good friend and trainer (Coach Rizzo). I started going to this gym in November when my coach from my prior gym (Rizzo) started working here. From the moment I started going to this gym the front desk people were all so nice and have great customer service. You will get a "Hi, how are you?" every time you come in and a "Thank you, have a nice day" every time you leave no matter who is working. I spent about 2 years here in total training, mostly boxing. I've never felt more at home at a gym. Even if I took 3 months off, I felt like I came back to a friendly and motivating environment. I think people overlook the significance of a healthy environment that welcomes everyone. I found myself inspired by the great coaching here from; Robbie, Steve, Juan, Luke and many more. I started to come to American Gym because of my trainer Alex. And I am so glad I followed him to this amazing gym! The facility is clean, spread out, high vaulted ceilings, and have so many different conditioning equipment to train every single part of your body. I do personal boxing/strength training sessions with Alex. He will train you to the best of your ability and will work a program for you that tailors to your needs, even any injuries...like I have myself. I have degenerative disc disease with from L3-L4, L4-L5, and L5-S1 with 4mm of each one bulging, scoliosis, and some cartilage breaking around my lumbar. Alex, along with the amazing equipment at American Gym, have helped strengthen not just my core to relieve horrible pain, but have mentally made me realize that anything is fixable with a strong mind and physical activity. Every single employee/crew member at this gym are super friendly! I come all the way from Long Beach, and walking in as a the newbie, I did not feel uncomfortable once. OK here is my full review. I was referred here from my boyfriend, brandon. I used to be trained by a Marine a few years ago, and when he left for Afghanistan I couldn't find another trainer like him. I tried several trainers, classes, from cycle to corepower to irvine bikram to backbay boot camp. It took a few years and I let my workouts go as I started my practice. When I was referred here I was hesitant. I didn't feel like the training with others was worth the time or money. However, just after a few sessions training here I feel very comfortable. If you join this gym, be prepared to see very qualified fitness trainers. The atmosphere is very diverse and respectful. The facility is well ventilated and clean. There is everything from a boxing ring, lots of these kicking things hanging from the ceiling, and even an octagon in the back. You can do cardio and weights, and I was able to stretch in a small corner of a mat while I watched (in some disbelief) as two guys trained in MMA right in front of my face. It was very interesting. On the other side of the room were 3 ppl training in some kind of jui jitsu. If anything, this place is full of people who are disciplined in some kind of training and it's not like meatmarket of 24 hr. I worked with Brian as my trainer. He spends 30 minutes with me. Just those 30 minutes provides more strength for my yoga than the hours spent with lesser observant trainers. I have been lucky to have a strong gym attendance from my family. From the elite sporting house in vegas (since closed) to ultra 24, I really have seen it all. I even had a yogi for several years, and I truly appreciate the individualized attention. I recommended this gym and its experienced trainers without reservation. expect a different kind of challenge here! I have already spoken highly of Brian and his staff to many of my colleagues and friends. Have fun!!!! The American gym rocks! My trainer was with Andre Hitman Huseman. Every time I would work out with him was amazing, he made me forget about all my stress is in the daily life and just focused on boxing and cross training and everything that we did kicked my ass. The staff here also courteous and so kind and they really have a great team on board. It's not a five-star gym like you would find at an equinox or anything but hey, this gets it done. This place is always being cleaned no matter what time of the day I'm coming for a workout, someone's always cleaning sanitizing everything. Though right now I am on hold for working out for a little bit, I do miss my training sessions with Andre. He's such a great coach and makes you think before you Act. He gets into your mind, he gets into your deepest part of your brain and makes you trigger something that you've never did before. He's such an inspiration I cannot wait to go back and work out with him. Hitman has trained so many people you would not believe some of the celebrities he's worked with. I can see why he would work with them because he kicks ass. So his schedule is very tight, I'd be very lucky and you would be too if you can train with him because his schedule is jam-packed. But all the trainers there to all the other coaches they're all good I've even seen some of the other clients working out with other trainers there and honestly everyone is great but my favorite of all time is Hitman. I truly do love this gym, it has EVERYTHING. Okay, maybe not a sauna or pool area.. but it has all the essentials needed for boxing, workout and crossfit. I have been a member of this gym for a while now and this gym has the best instructors and coaches hands down. Bruce, Craig, and Alejandro, in particular are so well versed and knowledgeable in the crafts that they teach. I have been training under them for almost ten years now, and I can't say enough good things about them. Craig is an active MMA fighter/pro boxer, Bruce has trained JKD under Dan Inosanto, and Alejandro is a former pro boxing world champion. I've earned an amateur Muay Thai belt under them and I owe all my progress to them. I am now looking forward to competing in amateur boxing under their coaching. Great prices , the trainers are super friendly and knowledgeable, it's clean and the owner Brian is always making upgrades to the equipment and genuinely cares about his business along with everyone who works out there. So I've been going to Steve's class which includes sparring with each other with mitts. I've gotten hit a couple of times by my boyfriend, but it's my fault...should have zigged and not zagged. Sometimes I feel like as if I'm seeing stars but I just gotta suck it up. I really like the part in class where we punch each other in the abs. Great way to shape them abs up and feel the pain. All the classes and instructors here are great. Even when you have other instructors covering for a class. They do something different. Love this gym. read more

Erin is amazing, she made me feel completely at home. She worked my ass good but could see my limits. She's a great teacher and I am very inspired by her. Moved to OC. Looked for badass gym with heavy weights, lots of free weights, and bumper plates. Found gyms with aforementioned equipment, but they were all Crossfit gyms and cost $250 a month. My wallet cried. My biceps cried. Sighed. Joined 24 Hour Fitness. Visited 4 locations to find one with more than 2 squat racks within their 4,000 square feet of space. Failed. Resigned myself to "dealing with it". Went to squat, saw bro doing curls. Try not to cry. Cry a lot. Search Yelp. Find American Gym. Plates galore. Bumper plates. Iron plates. Bench. Power cage. Squat rack. Squat stand. Glute ham raise. Reverse hyper! Have my Neo from the Matrix moment. Woah. I don't come here for any of the combat-related activities, but I do come here to do battle against myself, three days a week, and it's awesome. read more

This place is LEGIT! I've been shopping around for the right gym for the past several months. The funny thing is that my brother used to work at this gym and was always trying to get me to come in. I never gave it a chance. I recently found out that the joke was on me, and I am kicking myself for not starting sooner. Once I came in for my first class, I was hooked. The trainers are not only badass's but they are all super friendly too. I have been going every other day since I signed up, and I have been put through some of the best workouts I've ever had (and these are just from the free classes that you get with a typical membership). Keep in mind that this is a REAL GYM, not the type of gym you go to look cool and show off your florescent colored shoes or chill in the plush locker room. This is where you go to get in great shape, and that's it. Oh, and I forgot to mention that I thought the guy was joking when he told me the price. It is a fraction of the cost of LA Boxing, or Innovative Results or Orange Coast Crossfit, or any other comparable gyms. I just hope they don't raise the prices once people find out about this place. Get a free pair of great boxing gloves when you sign up They do classes all day, personal training, and of course you can go workout there with your membership. All of the trainers are epic. I take Anthony's, Jason's and Tony's classes, Monday through Friday(Boxing and Kickboxing). They are some of the best trainers I have ever worked with. Oh man...where do I even begin. This place is AWESOME. I can already tell, and I have only taken one kickboxing class. I'm a kickboxing n00b, and they made me feel welcome and comfortable, despite my awkward n00biness. I am by NO MEANS a person who likes working out (I LOATHE working out, hate it with a passion!), or lives a fitness lifestyle or any of that nonsense, but I signed up for a membership to this place immediately upon completing my first class(!!!). That has never happened to me before; I have NEVER wanted to pay money to do any sort of workout outside of the free trial or intro deal period. I've tried many different gyms and classes and studios and whatnot, and nothing has ever made me go "hhmm, I think I'll sign up for that!" besides this place. No one pressured me to buy their membership (which is an AMAZING deal BTW), it was like they didn't even have to. The workout was THAT good, it spoke for itself. I started my first kickboxing class (with Mike...I can't say how the other instructors do their classes) with a little circuit training for about 5 minutes or so, then you move to my favorite part: PUNCHING BAGS. Ugh, such amazing stress relief, I can't even tell you. Mike will yell out and demo punch/kick combos and you do them at your own pace on the bag. None of that sparring/partner-work BS that is awkward as HELL. No thank you! They do have other classes that offer that sort of interaction, but that is not for me. Hitting the punching bag is where it's at. Then, Mike broke up the bag session with random bits of crunches, push-ups, jump roping, etc. which was fun and exciting! And then I think we ended the class with some leg lifts and ab-work, which was a nice way to kind of let me lie on the floor and flail around if I was feeling exhausted...which I was! If you are looking for a fun (my personal #1 criteria for a good workout), stress relieving, amazing, full-body workout, this is the ticket. HELPFUL TIPS FOR FIRST-TIMERS! ***Bring some gloves of your own, if you can! I walked in and the only awkward part was when they front desk girl & the instructor were asking me if I had gloves or hand wraps, and I was like "uuumm...no...no one told me I needed anything!" So, I had to use their loaner gloves (GROSS!...but they worked, so I can't complain too much). A membership comes with a pair of gloves (yay!), but you will need to buy hand wraps for like $4.99 at a sporting goods store. ***Make it known to the front desk and the instructor that you are new, and the instructor will quickly go over some basic moves with you so you can understand the combos throughout the class. All of the combos pretty much consist of the same basic kickboxing moves, so once you get those down, they are easy and fun so don't worry too much if you get lost. Other people in the class were SUPER helpful and nice, because they too were new and awkward once. ***HAVE FUN! Seriously. It's only awkward if you make it awkward, and these types of places and gyms have a high potential for workout awkwardness, but this place is FUN. read more

Gym goer beware! Make sure you read the contract! If you rely on what you are told at the front desk you will end up paying the price.. literally.. I was neither informed about a cancellation fee nor a 60 day cancellation notice by the person at the front desk upon signing up. I explicitly told the person that I could not be stuck in a contract as I would be forced to move in the near future and couldn't predict where and when I would be moving. I was told that the membership would be cancelled automatically if I move further away than 25 miles, so I replied "oh, great! in that case, let's do it!".. However, I was charged 100 bucks to cancel even though I supplied them with my new address (over 40 miles away), in addition to a 60 days notice, which I couldn't provide as my new job only gave me 3 weeks to move. To put this in perspective, the vast majority of places only have a 30 day notice, so it appears as if these people want to make it extra expensive if you need to leave the area before your contract is over. I would have never signed up if I would have been properly informed by the people who work there. This makes it appear as if all they are after is your cash, and that they are willing to tell you whatever to get you to sign up. My advice is to be cautious and not to trust the word of the person at the front desk! The training I received was fun, and this review is solely my opinion on the management and its deceiving sales tactics, not the classes. read more

An American Gym is a GREAT place for beginners. As most of you know, starting a new gym is almost always uncomfortable. Will you feel welcome? Will the trainers be friendly? Add that to the anxiety of wondering if you can even learn how to throw a proper punch and it's almost enough to keep you trying in the first place. Well, I took a chance and went to one of the free classes offered here. Patrick was my trainer, and after telling him I was brand new (something obvious to anyone watching me punch at the air awkwardly) he immediately had me doing basic drills and simple movements aimed at building my confidence. His class is a prefect blend of technique and conditioning and it continues to be one of my favorites after 5 months here. Juan, another trainer at An American Gym, is extremely passionate and great at motivating you even when you think you have nothing left. If you want to build some serious endurance I highly recommend taking a class with Juan. In the few months I've been a member this gym has continued to improve for the better, and that includes not only new equipment but an overall improvement in the atmosphere and enthusiasm felt throughout the gym. I have been going here for the past few weeks and have been very impressed! I used to be a member at 24 Hour Fitness for 10 years mainly to lift weights and play basketball with my friends. I got tired of the crowds during peak hours and now since 24 is adding extra money for their "Sport" facilities, i decided to end my run with them. I went into American Gym and met Mike at the front desk. He was very blunt, helpful, and willing to answer all the questions that i had. Just so people know...this place is the OPPOSITE of 24 Hour Fitness. It is a smaller gym but has enough room for all the people to come in and take their classes. The members work extremely hard, and the Instructors are incredibly motivating and teach technique and are very considerate of beginners. (such as myself) Some people might think that the staff are "Hard Sellers" and the atmosphere is too rough or things like that. Yet people join a Boxing, BJJ, Muay Thai gym because it is challenging and very different from a 24 Hour Fitness type atmosphere. The staff reflects the classes that they teach. This is a good gym. I've been here for over a year now and left LA Boxing for here. They offered me a discount to join for a year a low flat rate. The classes are really good, and its a good boxing gym for all levels. Their classes are geared towards beginners and they have trainers on staff that you can pay for lessons to advance your boxing skills. I havent checked out the MMA classes, but I heard theyre good. Frankie's kickboxing class is really good conditioning, and I like working with Steve in his boxing classes. I personally train with Robby. If you're choosing between LA Boxing and here, this is the better choice for sure. I would even go as far as to say you will regret joining LA boxing with their high rates and they make it really hard for you to cancel your membership. read more

I have waited a full year to post my experience here, instead of posting a stellar 5 star review after my first workout like I know many people do. Fortunately, after a year of training here, there's no way I can give an amount of stars below 5. Like most, I inquired about a free boxing class at American Gym. My life was very stressful at the time, and I found myself looking for a new healthy hobby. All of my correspondence was through e-mail with Brian Hood. He was very welcoming, kind, and professional. He explained what the classes consist of, what I would need to bring with me (gloves, wraps, etc) and we set a time for my first class. My first class was with Juan, who is hands down the best coach there. He really has a way of connecting with his class, which is generally a younger crowd. After my first boxing class, my endorphin high was so incredible that I signed up for a membership right then and there. Over the last year, I have leaned more towards weightlifting and have strayed away from the classes (for now). What's great about American Gym is that you receive unlimited classes with your membership. That means you can literally SUCK the value out of your membership and take a class everyday of the week if you wanted to. The freedom to do this is just really convenient. They have classes every day (except maybe weekends). The gym is NEVER crowded. My normal workout time is 5 pm right after work, and it's still totally manageable. I never have to wait for machines or anything like that. If this is a gym you go to often, you will notice the regulars that are there around the same time that you are, they have all been very nice to me. Some trainers here have their own ways of doing things. Some are talkative, some are quiet, some are very intimidating, and some are nice as pie. However, what truly impresses me about the customer service here, is the fact that Brian will greet you, every single day. He doesn't care if you have headphones in or not, he'll wave, smile, and just be an all around great guy. Brian, I know eventually you will read this, so please don't ever stop that. It's such a small gesture that makes everyone feel so welcome to walk into your gym...and guess what. NOBODY else does it, which makes you really shine as the owner. Pros: This is a great place to go workout out. The boxing instructor actually know what they are talking about and all have extensive backgrounds in the sport. The membership was not expensive compared to other prices I have seen out there either. They gave me my first month free too since I was already a member at another gym and had already paid for the month. So that was pretty cool. Also if you aren't sure about the gym they will let you got to a couple classes for free to see if you like it so either way you have nothing to lose. Cons: if you are not planning on taking part in the boxing classes then you could definitely get just a normal gym membership probably cheaper somewhere else but don't quote me on that check out all the memberships yourself read more

I've been training at American Gym for the past 7 years under my fight coach Bruce Wilkerson and my teammate Craig Wilkerson. For anyone that wants to learn basic self defense and is looking to complete in martial arts or is looking to get into shape using fighting techniques, these 2 guys are the people you want to get in contact with. Bruce is a genuine person who has a passion for martial arts and dedicated his spare and free time to teaching and coaching his students and anyone looking to to learn how to fight. He works a full time, lives in Corona but commutes to OC just to teach and be there for anyone wanting to join his class. He is the type of person that will give you 200% if you are willing to meet him halfway and push you when you need it. Bruce has become a part of my own extended family and I have a great deal of respect and admiration for not only him but his son Craig who I've grown to care as a brother. Craig is a professional fighter who has carried on his father's legacy of passion for martial arts and fitness. Both will prepare you for competitions, stay after class to coach you and give you the extra time needed to compete. Like his father, Craig will give you 200% and will become your favorite and least favorite training partner all in one. He is hard on you because he genuinely wants you to succeed in your goals and has an extensive resume from wrestling in high school and college. Both have an astounding amount of experience fighting and training in martial arts including Boxing, Muay Thai, Savate, Jui jitsu and Wrestling; as well as coaching in all these areas of martial arts.
