This is a 5/8" lift on an Alegria sandal.

I'm so glad I found this place. The orthotic is high-quality, flexible and light. While a little more expensive than the local cobbler and the orthotic can't be adjusted because they are made different than a cobbler, it is totally worth it. The local cobbler around here pretty much glued a block of wood onto the bottom of my shoe. There was no give and it felt like my shoe got bigger. I couldn't wear them. But with American Heelers there is none of that. You feel like you're walking in a regular shoe. They are very accommodating. Most of their business is done through the mail, but since I live close by, I call ahead & just go up there and someone will be there for me. Also none of the bs the cobbler made me go through to get my orthotic. The cobbler wanted a faxed prescription from my physician. I got measured at Hanger Orthotics not my physician but they still made it a hassle for me. At American Heelers you ask for what you need and that's what you get.

    With 1.4' Lift.

The owner, Ilya, has done a half-dozen shoes for me in the past four years -- from running shoes to serious hiking boots.

I have written a number of reviews, but they were always for something relatively unimportant, e.g…read more a restaurant reviews. This review is different because the topic directly affects the quality of life, in particular, spine, hip, and knee issues. Why? Uneven leg length is a major problem affecting perhaps 60% of the population, but it is almost never checked and only the careful clinician will even know how to accurately check for it. The problem is, uneven leg length doesn't show up per se. The problem with uneven legs is the symptoms of are usually back pain, usually one sided, or scoliosis, or hip pain, or knee pain. The painful or damaged area will be treated with pain medications and eventually surgery, but the reason WHY the joint/spine degenerated is never figured out. I am a kinesiologist, yet I only became aware of the uneven leg length issue when the cause of my severe spine damage and scoliosis was FINALLY tracked to my 9 mm difference in leg length. Unfortunately, a life of military and firefighting service left me, at 55, with too much damage, and I required major spine surgery. However, with my leg length now corrected, I am hoping my scoliosis will correct over time as it did for another patient (see pictures) who also had scoliosis. As you can see, his hips are very uneven, and when I pointed out his leg length inequality (see tops of femurs) was causing his scoliosis, he changed doctors, got inserts, and within three months his scoliosis is almost gone! My wife also suffered from right sided sacroiliac pain despite years of various types of physical therapy and corrective exercise. As soon as we realized she was 7 mm short in the right leg, she got an insert (pictured) and her pain has been gone ever since. For the past three years my wife and I used simple heel lifts. They helped a lot, but were also a bit uncomfortable. Mine kept slipping around because I have big feet. They also acted a bit like a "high heel" causing my right foot to always point down slightly. Full length inserts didn't work because the front of my feet would get squished. Enter American Heelers! When I saw the site, it seemed to good to be true. Their inserts were full length, but build into the sole. This meant the space within the shoe for each foot would remain as it should be. The full length insert also meant both feet would be level. I sent in my work boots (I also work as a paramedic), my hiking boots, and my Merrells minimalist shoes. American Heelers got them back to me within a work week, and wow was I impressed. Everything was very neat and solid. My first test of the inserts was when my wife and I took a 13 mile hike in the mountains around Vail, CO. This was a bit risky since we had not hiked more than 4 miles in years, and at the end of each, my right foot would hurt from the unevenness, especially in the downhill trek when the high-heel effect would cause my foot to burn. NOTE: I pause my review Sep 2019, and am completing it tonight, 04 March 2021. The shoes with sole-implants have held up through the past two years, including many hikes in the hills and rocks, and every-day wear. They are amazingly durable, and I can't say enough good about them.
