When I decided to change the wedding band to go with my halo ring we went to him again. He recommended a curved band with some smallish diamonds in it. I asked almost joking what am I going to do with my original band that had much smaller diamonds in it. He suggested he mount them to my engagement ring shank. I asked how will that look? He said "beautiful". Sad to say, it did not look beautiful. The diamonds were buried in the shank, the tool marks very visible and to make things worse, the mountings were not equally set as far as depth goes. I went to him to let him know how I felt and he offered to put larger diamonds in it. Said those little diamonds are really hard to do. My question: why did he sell me on the idea? James gave me a price to do bigger diamonds that he said was special. I checked around. It was not. So now I have the original wrecked wedding band, and an engagement ring that now looks somewhat homemade. I feel I gave James who seems like a nice guy, the opportunity to make it right. He did not. And he will not get that opportunity again with me. I had met with another custom jeweler here in Santa Fe (MH). We have planned a very thoughtful design with much time involved to remedy the issues and says that if I am not thrilled, he will remake the rings until I am thrilled. I did want a slight alteration and he was happy to do so.

I went in with some black opal stones that a Los Angeles jeweler had proposed making the settings…read morefor but would not mount the opals because they are delicate. I was skeptical of the process of one jeweler making settings for stones that it did not have physically in its protection. I asked the jeweler at Santa Fe Goldworks if he could do it and he told me yes. He made copies of the CAD designs of the proposed settings and photos of opal pendant sales that would be used. He said he would provide $$ estimates for the mountings that afternoon. Based upon that representation, I told the Los Angeles jeweler to go ahead. Two days later I received an email from an assistant saying that the owner decided that they would not do it. That has put me in a terrible financial bind. DON'T TRUST THIS JEWELER.

Andrew worked on three of our antique items: a tall case German Mauthe clock about 100 years old, a tall case wooden works American made clock about 200 years old, and an Edison phonograph 115 years old. Andrew fully explained all of the repairs for each item. The German clock required a full restoration, and the S. Hoadley wooden works clock needed quite a few adjustments to the mechanism and pendulum. He was able to get the 115 year old Edison phonograph working! The clocks are now running and keeping perfect time as well chiming as they were intended to do. What other craftsperson has this varied master expertise, amazing! He's also really principled and cares about the effects of chemicals in the environment.
