    After care snacks.

Came here today 10/17/23 to donate whole blood. Alvin greeted me right away. He was so professional, friendly and made me feel very comfortable. My process was painless and fast. The staff was kind and seemed like they really love their job! I will be back to this office because of my good experience. Way to go Alvin!

I've donated with this location of the American Red Cross twice or thrice now, and each time has been merely an average experience. I really like giving blood because it's doing a good deed, but sometimes average experiences make it really difficult to want to go back to donate. I think the people who work here are much more comfortable socialising with the other workers, instead of the blood donors, but I think sometimes the blood donors would like someone to talk to them to distract from the needle sticking out from their arm. Some of the workers are a bit cold, just doing their jobs, while others try a little harder to interact but don't end up doing a great job with conversation. On my past visit, the phlebotomist who inserted the needle into my arm wasn't the most talkative, and she just stood there for five minutes while she collected my blood. Afterwards, she just took the needle out of my arm, and told me to wait for 15 minutes in the snack area. My friend was also donating blood with me on the same day, so while waiting for him, one of the other workers started talking to me. Her conversation with me redeemed this visit! In all honesty, if you're looking for a quick blood donation experience, this is a good place to go. If you're a little nervous each time you donate blood and need someone to talk to, I would find another location to visit! As a side note though, the hours of this Red Cross are quite inconvenient. They close quite early (6:30 PM on Tuesday-Thursday, 3 PM on Friday-Sunday), so it might be difficult to get here to donate blood if you work 9-5 every day. Your best bet would be Saturday or Sunday if you're free then.

In my early 20s, I had donated blood in the past through other organizations but was scarred from my past experiences. Recently, I donated blood for my friend's memorial drive through the Stanford Blood Center. After the 8 week waiting period, I decided to try my experience again but this time at the actual brick-and-mortar blood center location. The staff recognize your contributions, and they make sure to accommodate that every step of the way. I had an appointment for a whole blood donation, and the check-in process was very simple with the required questionnaire, vitals check, and short wait period. The area for donations is a very comfortable area with elevated plush chairs. It was cozy enough such that I could fall asleep in them! The phlebotomist was super professional at getting me situated before the needle poke and she really knew her way into identifying my vein. I've had struggles in the past where phlebotomists had a hard time finding it or moving the needle around in my arm to find my vein (part of the scarring from the past). Once the needle is in, the blood donation process takes about 7-10 mins on average. After the donation, you have the required 15 min waiting period. They bring you over to their canteen area, and a volunteer brings your choice of snacks and drinks. Their snack selection is plentiful, from your choice of fruit, chips, cookies, and a variety of drinks! Absolutely made the recovery process a lot more enjoyable, and you can get refills on snacks as well! They really treat their donors well, and my goal now is to keep donating my blood as often as possible to help save some lives!

I just want to say, thanks so much too Janelle (whom I think might be the manager?) and Cynthia,…read morethe gal on the phone who coordinated with SBC to allow me to make a donation today, despite the fact that I couldn't get there until three o'clock. I drove all the way from Coalinga, to make a donation today, and I might be moving, so I didn't know if I would even be in the area a month from now. Somehow I managed to take a wrong turn on the 152, which had me running late. The first gal I talked to on the phone was surprisingly rude. I'm not going to say her name, but it began with a B. I told her I was running a little bit late for my 2:30 appt (which was supposed to be in Menlo Park), and she rudely told me that I had to get there by two thirty or else I would be locked out. I was like, whaaaat? I knew that was not correct because if you make an appointment, they say that if you keep the appointment and are not more than like ten or fifteen minutes late, you can actually get extra points for that in the donor loyalty store. Then, at some point I realized my g p s was actually directing me to the mountain view center and not Menlo Park. Luckily, I did not get that first lady on the phone again. Cynthia answered, and she was very sweet and said she would check with the people in mountain view and see if I could donate there instead. She came back on the line and said it would be okay as long as I could definitely make it there by three ( i want to emphasize that she definitely did say I had to be there by three and I guess it was my bad that I thought that meant it's ok to get there AT 3, not realizing it has to be BEFORE 3). I said yes no problem, i actually would have five minutes to spare. She then let the people at the Menlo Park center know i would be going to donate at a different location. Well when I got there, I have to be honest, I had two dogs in the car and felt like I needed to let them take a quick potty break because we had been in the car for almost three hours. Then, I had to scramble to figure out which door in the building was for the Stanford blood center. If I had known which one was the right door to go to, I probably would have made it in at 2:59. But I had to ask around, and didn't figure out which was the right door until 3:00 on the nose... and apparently by then it is too late. The door was closed. I had to knock on it and practically beg them to let me just do the donation, because honestly I don't know if i'm going to be able to come back again. The gal who answered the door had to go get Janelle to ask if they could make an exception. I was like please please just take me, i already filled out the precheck questionnaire, and it only takes me like four minutes for them to draw a pint of blood from my arm (drinking lots of water is the key). Luckily, Janelle agreed to take me. And she saw I wasn't kidding, I was done in 4:02. Janelle was super nice and we talked about her huskies, because I am fostering three, and she used to have one. Anyway, I am so glad to have been able to get this out of the way, and really appreciate everyone's patience today. I did a post on nextdoor asking people to please donate because this is a really critical time where blood is needed more than other times in the year. I always feel really good after I donate, so it's really a win win situation. Today was my fifty third donation, and the nice people who work for SBC are a big part of the reason I keep coming back. Happy new year everyone!!!

She went and reported me to someone on her personal number after barely checking in and asking her a question. I said I didn't want to come back and was trying to leave and was pretty upset by then. So thìs old Russian lady (maybe) came out and was saying I couldn't be upset there and to come with her. I told her I was trying to leave my info so someone can remove me from the system. Somehow she dragged me to the intake room and forced me to give her all my details. She wanted to see my arms and I was embarrassed of my severe eczema rash's, scars, and scabs but she kept insisting and said I was a drug addict she needed to check my skin. I got up quickly and said excuse me????? She kept assuming I was a user. I wanted to leave but she just ket insisting I stay and finish the process. I was forced to show her my eczema and very embarrassed but I did lift up my jacket sleeves and barely showed her. She tried to lift my sleeve and check my arms and kept insisting she needed to see both arms. She offended me and kept pushing I stay. She yanked my thumb and placed in this medical ring and later claimed it was to check iron. My "iron" was a little short and said I was not eligible to donate but had the tenacity to say I could come back tomorrow. I could tell she was a liar because I have stopped using my weight loss injection since mid January this year and I asked if what she said was true then how come I had more iron while still on my weight loss injection and always qualified to donate. Thìs was her way to shut me up or calm me down but because of her and this uncomfortable asian lady at the front; patients in need of healthy will have one less unit to help keep them alive. It is very unfortunate the evening staff are "short staffed" but it's still no reason to overbook people for the same slots when there aren't enough technicians. The American Red Cross were quite pleasant in the beginning but since the time before last and this last one, things have gone downhill quite a bit. I was severely bruised up for the first time ever by a young male technician and I thought I was never coming back but they kept sending me desperate emails asking me to donate again. So I did but after my experience last night, I'm convinced they don't need my help and think lying to me and stalling my time is okay but it's not. They were phonies in my opinion and don't deserve to represent American Red Cross. Neither can do their jobs without being manipulative in the process.

The staff are all extremely friendly and the overall atmosphere is comfortable. There are more than enough spaces and seats to go to whenever you donate and they make sure you're comfy. If you'd like to take a nap while watching a movie, Netflix, TV Show anything you can. If you want to just rest and stay longer after you're fully finished you can. The one major complaint I had when going is that it could take a while to get your checkup even if you get there early. Sometimes there maybe delays because the staff could be busy with other stuff or finishing wrapping up on donors who are done. Which could lead to you waiting in the wait room longer than you'd expect. Just remember to have your rapid pass done before going for your donation. And also make sure you have enough to drink or eat after you're done so you won't get sick or feel weak after your donation. They have thin blankets for you that they heat up in the machine, but I found bringing my own fleece blankets worked better for me. I saw a lady bring a beanie, scarf, and gloves too, which was very smart! *you can be turned away if you don't pass the health screening so just be aware of this possibility...it's nothing personal but they are looking out for you. However, don't be discouraged and keep trying. My friend has been donating for years (blood and platelets) and there are times when she has been rejected due to poor circulation. The environment seems questionable and the fact that roughly 10 students were waiting outside for an hour seemed even more odd. A student finally received an email for the code to enter the building and everyone seated themselves in the classroom. At 10 AM another student received an email that the instructor will be there in less than 15 minutes. Class was scheduled to begin at 9 AM. The instructor finally arrived an hour late and began passing out handbooks and setting up the classroom. 5 minutes later a student got up and hollered at the instructor that he's untrustworthy given that he arrived an hour late and should've apologized right away instead of setting up the classroom. My second course was March 2016 to renew my certification. Thankfully Janice was on time and made sure everyone knew the course agenda. She scheduled a break that would suit everyone's schedule. Overall I wouldn't recommend this location if you are being dropped off by a friend or parent. There is nothing within a reasonable walking distance if is class dismissed early. After parking, I had to enter from the loading dock on the back side (heads up for those interested in taking the course). I was a bit skeptical about how successful the day would be but it actually turned out great, mainly due to our instructor. Ingrid Pocock was really welcoming and patient throughout the whole class. She definitely knows what she is doing and I would highly recommend her as an instructor. She took the time to make sure that all questions were answered and that everyone could properly practice the skills for certification. She is the reason why I reviewed this place a 3/5 stars.
