I've given blood for many, many years. While Covid made a dent in my Blood Donation calendar, I'm back in full swing now. Located in a huge-ass plaza off of Hubbards Lane, this donation location is pretty easy to get to. The storefront is pretty unassuming and if you weren't looking for it you wouldn't know it's there. It's easy to book your donation appointment on the app or online. I'm a platelet donor (which takes about two hours), so if you're looking to do platelets you should absolutely check the app or website for available times. Checking into your appointment on the app (or online) will save you loads of time when you arrive. I've never had to wait to get started, I just walk in the door, check in, and then they take you to what I'm suddenly going to call an Evaluation Room. There a lab tech (?) will ask a few questions and take a few tests (oxygen, blood pressure, etc) to make sure you're good to go. This whole process take about 10 minutes. The donation area is broken down into the types of donations that are taken. The Platelets area is a about 5 beds along a wall, each with a smart television and headphones to help pass the time. Once the techs get you situated and comfortable *ouch*, here come the needles! Blood goes out one arm, some kind of magic happens in the machine, and then your blood (minus the platelets) is returned in the other arm. This process takes roughly 90 minutes to two hours. While you're donating there's a Roku television that you can tune into a favorite move to television show to keep you occupied. The staff here is very friendly, helpful, and they 100% know what they're doing. They check back frequently during your donation process to see how you're doing and if there's anything you need. When you're done, there are some snacks and drinks to help restore what you just gave away. Making a donation at this location of the American Red Cross is a rewarding experience. Made an appointment online via the American Red Cross web site. The website showed 3 open slots to donate today (3-18-23) I chose the 11:15 am time, complteted the questionnaire & was given the appointment. I was sent a confirmation email w/ a QR code also. I arrived at the N. Hubbards Ln. location about 20 minutes early only to find that my name wasn't on the schedule. I showed the staff my confirmation e-mail & QR code. They said they don't take same day appointments. At first the excuse was that they had 3 people at lunch, I said I'd wait. Then the excuse was they don't have the staff. I asked to speak to the manager. I was met by "Melanie" who regurgitated the same excuse about staff at lunch, then being understaffed & no same day appointments although their own website list open, available slots to donate. I ask her to work me in. She became surly, aggitated and began to try to patronize me. The Red Cross is always begging for people to donate, what gives. Do not waste your time and gas to donate here, these people don't care and the fact that you want to donate means that they might have to work harder. The staff here is not very professional and is a poor reflection on what should be a good experience. read more

Want to feel like an appreciated superhero? I have always felt that way when giving blood at this location! The staff is very kind and caring and really wants you to have a good experience. The Red Cross's online scheduling system is very easy and appointments are always on time here. Using RapidPass I am in and out in under an hour usually. During Covid times everyone is of course wearing masks and getting temperatures checked. Staff members are also vigilant about wearing and switching gloves between donors, as I personally witnessed. Their canteen has lots of snacks and drinks and they welcome you to take at least a few. And sometimes you even get a free item for donating - I got a cute tshirt! read more

Playlet donation in only two hours! Save a life. Give blood! You can walk-in or better yet call ahead and schedule at appointment to done blood or platelets. Both blood and platelets are always needed, but the need for platelets is usually urgent/critical. After a volunteer signs you in you must got through a screening process. Painless, and especially quick usually when you schedule an appointment. The men and women who do the screening are friendly and efficient. If giving platelets, you can choose from a great collection of movies to watch. You just have to be still while the needles are in. This visit was fast and efficient and I got to watch LaLa Land while not being entertained by the staff. And I got treats with a drink and a hug when I was done. I'll be back soon. read more

One thing I have tried to do this year is go to the American Red Cross and donate platelets. It takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to collect enough platelets to help bone marrow transplant, cancer, and leukemia patients. Donors with high platelet counts often are able to donate two or three units of platelets in one visit. The collection bags, tubing and needles are all sterile, and used for one donation only." The time quoted is based on two arm donation. I donate with one arm (so I can play games and read email and Yelp). That takes about 2 1/2 hours from check in to walking out the door. The Red Cross has a new RapidPass system that allows you to complete much of their standard questionnaire, but be prepared because it is not available on a mobile platform. You have to do it on a PC (I've tried multiple ways to trick it with no success). But you can send the completed pass to your mobile device. I like this Red Cross office because of the staff. They are wonderfully kind. They always remember me and we have fun chatting, etc., yet extremely vigilant of their patients. And although my blood is being sucked out of my body, cleansed of platelets and retuned through a clicking, beeping machine, I do not feel like a part of the Dune cast. Lessons I have learned: 1) Always, always eat a good dinner and healthy breakfast. My one time trying to donate after my normal Power Bar breakfast did not cut it. Now I eat a cup of Greek yogurt, fruit & nuts. The staff stresses that calcium and a full stomach are important. 2) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate....of course water is best. Try to stay away from high caffeine drinks. 3) Be mindful of your body's health. I usually have a higher than normal pulse rate, but one time I had to leave because it was too high. I had not taken my blood pressure med & been up all night. Not a good combination. Because I am more mindful, I ride my bicycle more and practice yoga breathing strategies. I am lucky to be healthy enough to donate and hopefully it will help someone out there in our beautiful world! read more

6/15/19 I gave a platelet donation recently and approximately 90% of my left arm turned dark purple. During a donation several years ago, my entire (100%) right arm turned black. A couple of days after my arm turned purple, I went back to the ARC (east end of Louisville, Ky.) and asked them why this happened. Someone from the donation room came out and asked me what I wanted. I showed him my arm and asked him what happened. He didn't say a single word of apology. He asked me if I was comfortable all during the donation. This was my 125th platelet donation and, like always, I could feel the needles in my arm. It's not painful and it's not comfortable. It's just a sensation that I always tolerate in order to donate platelets, so I told him about the sensation. He replied that my discolored arm was my fault because I didn't tell anyone about the sensation that I was experiencing for the 125th time. Very insulting. He then turned around and went back into the donation room. I do remember a sharp sting when the phlebotomist inserted the needle into my left arm, the sting telling me that she pushed the needle through the vein and pierced a muscle (which then started bleeding and continued to bleed all during the two-hour donation, causing the discoloration of my arm). I know she realized it because I saw her withdraw the needle about half an inch after she first inserted it. I've experienced this stinging sensation numerous times during the hundreds of units of blood that I've also donated. No more platelet or blood donations for me. The ARC is incompetent and insulting. read more

I have been wanting give back and help others in some way. I found that there was an American Red Cross location near where I live and decided that I wanted to help save lives by donating blood. I registered online in a matter of minutes and had an appointment set up just as quickly. They have what they call a fast pass that I would recommend doing. You are basically answering all the questions they would ask you in person, but online, saving time once you arrive for your appointment. If you don't know your blood type that is okay, I didn't but now do. I was only there for about an hour. That includes a small recovery period after the donation, which was just sitting and having some juice/snack to get my blood sugar back up. They were even giving out free aluminum American Red Cross water bottles, which was an unexpected gift. If you get cold easily be sure to dress warmly because they keep it very cool inside. I felt quite at home, but I know a lot of people get cold easily. I plan on continuing to donate whenever I can, which is about 56 days after each donation. I am even considering donating blood platelets in the near future as well. Why not go in and save some lives? read more
