Like on my first visit, I was instructed to fill out the questionnaire via my phone. I then emailed the results to myself, which included a QR code that the staff scans to input my answers. Different this time, though, was the fact that I waited in the vestibule for staff to take my temperature before entering. And all staff wore masks, and people who donate are told to wear masks as well. After checking in, I was brought to a small office to go over a few other questions and have my finger pricked. I still wish they had a bigger room to do this in, that would still allow social distancing, but at least all involved wear masks. And then I was directed to a donation chair and gave blood. The staff are friendly and professional. And this is an easy way to give back in a meaningful way. I will be back in two months to do it again.

Each week, this gaggle of geriatric greatness gets together to drink coffee and have a great time. I spoke with this group recently in order to provide them information about how to avoid adverse drug events (since their maintenance med list can extend greater than 10 meds on average) and they were grateful to say the least. I was really impressed with the activities coordinators as well while I was there. The center includes a pool table, a workout facility and a kitchen. They provide the "club members" as they like to call themselves with free lunch on the days that they attend. It's a wonderful community feature. Your entry fee? No fangled-fees here! The only requirement is being greater than age 60. Guess I'll have to keep presenting to them to get to hang out.

Make sure you have everything you need before your first donation. You have to have your ID, proof…read moreof address, and your social security card. If you don't have the social security card, your social can be verified at the front desk. If you don't have your proof of address you can donate your first time without it, but you have to bring it your second time. Make sure you eat a big meal before you come because your first visit as a new donor takes 2.5-3 hours. You want something on your stomach while donating. The process goes like this: You sign in and have your identity verified, you watch a new donor video on the donation process, you're then taken to a private booth where your photo is taken and your profile is created and pay card is issued, you answer a bunch of health questions on the computer in the booth, you have your vital signs and weight taken in the booth, then you have a quick physical with a nurse in an office, then you go donate which takes 45 min to an hour. There can be A LOT OF WAITING in between each part of the process so be prepared. If you think you are waiting too long in between each part don't just sit there, SAY SOMETHING. Employees get VERY busy with regular donors while you are going through the new donor process. You can donate twice a week in a rolling seven day period. You have to wait at least 24 hours in between the two donations. The donor fees are always changing every few months so it's best to just call to ask what they are. It's worth it because you are literally helping save a life and getting compensated to do it.

Located in a huge-ass plaza off of Hubbards Lane, this donation location is pretty easy to get to. The storefront is pretty unassuming and if you weren't looking for it you wouldn't know it's there. It's easy to book your donation appointment on the app or online. I'm a platelet donor (which takes about two hours), so if you're looking to do platelets you should absolutely check the app or website for available times. Checking into your appointment on the app (or online) will save you loads of time when you arrive. I've never had to wait to get started, I just walk in the door, check in, and then they take you to what I'm suddenly going to call an Evaluation Room. There a lab tech (?) will ask a few questions and take a few tests (oxygen, blood pressure, etc) to make sure you're good to go. This whole process take about 10 minutes. The donation area is broken down into the types of donations that are taken. The Platelets area is a about 5 beds along a wall, each with a smart television and headphones to help pass the time. Once the techs get you situated and comfortable *ouch*, here come the needles! Blood goes out one arm, some kind of magic happens in the machine, and then your blood (minus the platelets) is returned in the other arm. This process takes roughly 90 minutes to two hours. While you're donating there's a Roku television that you can tune into a favorite move to television show to keep you occupied. The staff here is very friendly, helpful, and they 100% know what they're doing. They check back frequently during your donation process to see how you're doing and if there's anything you need. When you're done, there are some snacks and drinks to help restore what you just gave away. Making a donation at this location of the American Red Cross is a rewarding experience. From the staff to the comfy tables to the quickness of getting started, this is a great place to save a life.

Made an appointment online via the American Red Cross web site…read more The website showed 3 open slots to donate today (3-18-23) I chose the 11:15 am time, complteted the questionnaire & was given the appointment. I was sent a confirmation email w/ a QR code also. I arrived at the N. Hubbards Ln. location about 20 minutes early only to find that my name wasn't on the schedule. I showed the staff my confirmation e-mail & QR code. They said they don't take same day appointments. At first the excuse was that they had 3 people at lunch, I said I'd wait. Then the excuse was they don't have the staff. I asked to speak to the manager. I was met by "Melanie" who regurgitated the same excuse about staff at lunch, then being understaffed & no same day appointments although their own website list open, available slots to donate. I ask her to work me in. She became surly, aggitated and began to try to patronize me. The Red Cross is always begging for people to donate, what gives. Do not waste your time and gas to donate here, these people don't care and the fact that you want to donate means that they might have to work harder. The staff here is not very professional and is a poor reflection on what should be a good experience.
