Competing with my empathy for anyone who is hungry or has no place to stay was my frustration with watching the homeless/hungry not eat everything on their plate. If you have no money for food, you are out of line to throw it away. I grew up in a house where resources were stretched thin and we never had the luxury to throw out food. Images of hungry people at shelters in addition to my own life experience drives my obsession with managing the contents of my refrigerator so that nothing passes the expiration date. The mission here is noble and essential. Many of the people who use the service have no idea what it is really like to have nothing. Cant fault Gospel Mission, though.

The Chaplaincy Hospice is a kind and caring source of support at the end of life. They started as…read morea a group of reps from churches who provided chaplain support and counseling to those in need. Later, they became a Hospice and now they operate Hospice House with 10-beds with 24/7 nurses as well as in-home care for loved ones at the end stage of life. They also provide grief support groups for adults and kids. Hospice has a core of paid staff and between 100-150 active volunteers at any given time. There are a range of programs in which volunteers work: Hospice House and In-Home Care; cookie brigade; yard and garden maintenance; facilitators of child support groups; and office and administration. One thing I have always heard about Hospice since I first learned of Hospice when in junior high is that people don't know about all the services which Hospice does provide. In addition to the excellent medical teams (doctor, nurse, nurse aide, social worker) and the volunteer, Hospice provides respite for caregivers and of course companionship visits by volunteers for your loved one. It's a hard thing to work into a conversation or to even refer or recommend their services, because it brings up the overarching topic of death and dying and grief. However, if there was one thing I could tell everyone about Hospice, it would be simply: call them! Please call them. Arrange to speak with a social worker if you are unsure about what Hospice is and what can they do for you because they truly provide comprehensive care for loved ones and caregivers alike. I am a big proponent of Hospice as my own grandmother had Hospice during her final days. We were so blessed that we did not have to experience her passing alone. Thanks to the on-call emergency nurse and nurse aide, they were there to make the difficult phone calls while we sat in the depth of our grief. Did you know that your loved ones can receive Reiki - an energy healing and stress reduction therapy? Did you know that Hospice has 2 volunteer therapy dogs? The dogs provide calm companionship for loved ones. Working with the dying is a special kind of calling, and all of the staff and volunteers who work for Hospice are passionately committed to serving the needs of the community with peace and kindness.

The care was unsurpassed and the meals were well balanced and excellent. One of my final memories of him was near the end when he was in hospice care. One of his wonderful GA caregivers sat with him and held his hand and spoke with him for hours on end. He was lovingly cared for all the time he was there. An amazing facility.
