I like going to the ARC Blood Center because it has the most scheduling times available for donation. I go on a weekend early in the morning to donate about every 60 days. It is recommended to download the Red Cross app to do your appointment scheduling and fill out your questionnaire. Whole blood donation, takes less than an hour as long as you show up on time and have the Rapid Pass ready. They also have snacks after the donation and depending on the season, little goodies like gift cards or tshirts. Don't know your blood type? You can find out when you become a blood donor! You get your blood pressure and iron level checked at each visit so it's a great way to monitor your health. The review won't be complete without explaining why I donate blood. I am O+ and CMV negative so my donations go to newborns and preemies. I always have to close my eyes and look away when they prick my finger and insert needle but my why is what keeps me going back. This is an outstanding organization that reaches out into the community to help those in greatest need. We toured the building and saw all of the amazing projects going on at the facility. Our favorite one was the making of care packages by special needs students to be sent to individuals around the country. It was wonderful to watch. read more

This is a tough "1" star to give. I mean who gives the Red Cross 1 star with all they do? The only reason is just to give people a heads up. Everyone is super nice but showed up on time for my appointment and 1 hour later I'm still waiting. They said they are under staffed which I totally understand but I wish they would have let me know ahead of time or at least when I checked in that it could be up to a 2 hour wait. Just be flexible with your schedule if you can. Update: I left because there was a lady there that had been waiting over 2 hours. When I asked about it that said they're focusing on platelet donations and whole blood donations were on the back burner. I have donated pretty regularly since I was 16 and when I donated today there were issues. The first tech I had tried to find a vein unsuccessfully on one arm. She was giving it her best shot and was sweet through the whole process - I just have small veins! It was definitely not good and I was afraid I'd be turned away. But Christin saved the day! I really wanted to leave this review for her. I'm not sure if she's a manager, or just the "go to girl", but she turned the donation experience around. She found a vein right away and put the needle in flawlessly. She was kind and had great customer skills as well as technical ability. If you find yourself lucky enough to have Christin help you here you are in for a good experience. I'll definitely be back, hopefully with larger veins next time! read more

Posted about a positive experience on google before I mention the second time my husband and I went in together. The comment was taken down. One of the guys said my husband couldn't donate because he was Mexican. He never has had a problem before donating and they were busy and wanted to trim down the line. I'm pregnant and currently can't donate and was there to be with my husband during the wait. Waited long after his appointment to finally hear a racist comment by a staff member no thanks. Fast service. As a regular donator, I know good staff, and this place has it. Comfy and new chairs and my phlebotomist sat with me while I donated. This is a generally great organization with a great mission so this not-so-positive review is not done happily but in the hopes that it will have a beneficial effect. I called re donating blood. I was told that i could be a walk-in so i went by the donation center in the middle of a chocker block busy day. When i arrived i was informed that they were 'to busy.' Really? Couldn't slip one in (there was no one else waiting)? To busy to accept free blood - and universal donor type at that - after the special trip (to say nothing of the regular pleadings for blood from this organization during the pandemic)? Btw, the 'other' walk in blood donation center happily accommodated my hopes to donate blood. Suggestion: Donors are trying to do the right thing. On one hand, I saw them handle a donor reaction really well. Everything was clean and the cookies and juice were delicious. On the other hand, I overheard off color jokes (one about rape!). Not professional guys. I don't think they knew I could hear them talking, but I could. It is really important to not talk like that at work so that more people donate blood. I take most reviews I see posted online with a moderate amount of skepticism. Disgruntled people having a bad day or attitudes that the world owes them some type of preferential service. However, I am baffled at this time by the incessant requests for Red Cross blood donations in Utah. I have attempted numerous times over the last several months to schedule as well walk in to the Murray location to donate only to be told they are full. I've tried the same approach at various mobile blood drives being held to be told the same thing. This is wonderful news in my opinion! When you are turning people away how can you possibly be bombarding the news channels with doom and gloom stories about blood shortages? Maybe you should show individuals such as myself being turned away. I would smile and praise the process of generous people making a difference rather than walk away shaking my head. While all donations are important I wanted to mention that I am both 0- and CMV Negative and for certain situations my blood type can be very useful to say the least. I would never insinuate bumping another generous donor but please offer some other options that might encourage others such as myself to donate even if it requires waiting. You have the non stop and persistently annoying calls at all hours of the day down to a science so how about directing your attention towards being more aware of the generous donors as they walk through your doors rather than after you've received what you've wanted? I've always had a decent experience with the Red Cross, friendly phlebotomists. However the last time I tried donating I had made an appointment and apon showing up they were gone and they left a sign saying they had enough blood. Which I find odd since they are always saying they are in constant need. Anyways, because of this reason alone I will not be donating with them anymore. Perhaps send a notification to the people with appointments so their time isn't wasted? read more

I have to say I'm pretty upset about my experience here today. I came in to donate blood and had an appointment for 2:15 but got there at 2. I wasn't seen for my history debriefing for 30 minutes and once I did that, it took another 30 minutes for me to get started on them taking blood(ended up leaving after 2 hours!!)The phlebotomist didn't seem new so I was confident on how she would do a good job but this was simply not the case. She inserted the needle into my arm and it was a very uncomfortable feeling I have never experienced giving blood before(mind you this was my 3rd time giving blood and all other times have been flawless). Once she got to my vein, everything seemed to be fine and I was almost done giving my amount until she had to call another person over to help. Apparently she had clotted my blood from the tube and they blamed it on me and my body. I was very disappointed in them after doing research that there is no possible way this was my fault as it is up to how the needle is placed and how my bags are set up. Now I am left with a very big bruise and a sad heart that I couldn't help someone in need. read more

I just got off the phone with a receptionist to make an appointment at this place, and I'm not sure I should even show up. No wonder there's a shortage of blood in Utah, they don't want you to even call them. I had to repeat myself several times because the operator wasn't even listening to me. I could hear this lady cursing under her breath when I asked when if I could schedule an appointment for next week to donate. If they don't even want you to call and make appointments then why on earth would I show up? What's this experience going to be like? And I'm supposed to volunteer for this crap? That's bull. I have donated at this location more than 40 times over MANY years and went in today to be turned away because they were "too busy". I get that they get overwhelmed at times, but I have been there when they had twice as many people working and waiting and was still seen. For someone that has donated more than 150 times in my life, and the Red Cross reaches out to me often, basically begging for me to donate (I am O- blood, a universal donor), they may have turned off a repeat donor because they did not want to work very hard.
