Akira/Aki, the owner, has received my award for the the worst hair experience ever in my life! I've written over 500 reviews over the past 10 years on Yelp, and this one is pretty up there with how upsetting this was and still is. He's worse than a $10 cut at SuperCuts since at least they won't cut 8 inches when you ask them to cut 3-4 inches, and completely mess with your hair to the roots! I normally go to my stylist in West LA but being a busy Mom of two little toddlers, it's difficult to get away. So I found a place nearby...BIG mistake. This experience starts with him making me waiting 15 minutes past my appointment time, which is fine if he's polite about it. But no, he just calls my name, no apology, no hi, no how are you. It's "what do you want"? I should've just listened to my instinct and left right then and there. Japanese customer service is normally polite and courteous, he was the complete opposite. Arrogant! I was thinking he better be good if I'm putting up with this attitude. Does he realize I'm the paying customer? I'm 2nd generation Japanese and can understand everything in Japanese but I don't speak it unless I have to. His English seemed sub par so I continued speaking to him in English. I clearly and repeatedly told him "I want 3-4 inches cut, thinned out since I have a lot of hair and layers". He says "Stand up" (not even a Stand up please), and asks "Cut here"? And I said "yes that's 3-4 inches". I figured once he cuts across, he will trim the edges and do a thorough cut. Nope, he used his thinning scissors and was cutting away. I couldn't see what he was doing until it was too late. 8 inches cut!!! He must've looked at his watch 10 times, so he just sloppily cut my hair. When he was done, I don't see any layers, and I'm left with old fashioned short hair. And he thinned my hair to my roots, yes my roots. So it's pokey to the roots all over! Who in the world thins hair like that? He's clearly an inexperienced stylist for women's hair. It will take years for the hair that he cut to my roots to grow out. He first tries to justify he cut it shorter so it looks better in a pony tail (huh? pony tails looks better with longer hair) when the reality is he messed up and did not know how to cut. He told his employee in Japanese "since I was born this is the first time"...which is regarding cutting someone's hair that has lots of hair. I know so many other people that has more hair than me. That's when I realized he is not a woman stylist, he is better off being a barber. At least he admitted he messed up, but how can you possibly mess up so royally? He should not be cutting women's hair! What a liability! He needs to work on his attitude and retire already. The only good thing about this place is that the ladies working here are really nice and friendly. Akira should learn a thing or two from them. Now I have to go and get my hair fixed by a legit hair stylist, if that's even possible with how short he already cut it. NEXT.... read more

Tashiro has been cutting my hair for more than a few years and has been doing a good job. Can't say I know what happened in my most recent appointment. He was impatient, unfriendly, difficult to communicate with. I walked out of the salon with a completely different haircut than what I asked for. The hair will grow out in time. So on May 4, 2019, I rolled the Yelp roulette wheel and picked this salon for a trim/reshape haircut based on reviews and location. I called and got a walk-in appointment within an hour. I arrived and Aki (owner) sat me in his chair. I was a little nervous because I did not know what to expect. He studied my hair and we talked about what I wanted. He did a relaxing and thorough hair wash and condition. And then started cutting. I still felt blind not knowing what his work was like, but I was pleasantly surprised by his technique and precision. I received an excellent haircut. This is the first time EVER that I have not had to come home and restyle my hair (bangs). I was very happy with the service and the price was reasonable. Friend of mine pointed this place out to me, and I decided to give it a try. The owner, Akira, trained at Vidal Sassoon in London and has been cutting hair for about 30 years. I explained to him that I wanted a low-maintenance short hairstyle, and he delivered. Like Julie said in her review, he was very precise and careful in his cutting. Not surprising after I found out he trained at Vidal Sassoon! The experience and the results reminded me very much of when I used to go to the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica (except that I didn't get paraded around as a hair model in front of classes of students here! haha). He looked very carefully at how my hair fell, trimmed up the shape over and over again until it was perfect, gave me very neat and even edges. Good eye for style and detail! So I needed a haircut.... bad. I am a very busy person and i work a lot so I never had time to go and it was long overdue. After searching online for a salon I initially wanted to go to the first one that popped up(I'm just that kind of person) but something was telling me to keep scrolling until I had found the American Salon. After reading reviews, I am nothing but HAPPY that I came here for my haircut. I actually got a Japanese hair straightening treatment. I have really unmanageable hair and it was very damaged so I did my research and concluded with that. So he started off with a haircut and I went through the process of washing my hair then putting in the chemicals and then straightening. This process takes about 2-3 times of repeating so that it really sticks. He told me this will last a minimum of 8 months and to come back for a touch up on my roots. I sat in that chair for 4 hours and I got my hair cut to my shoulders so if you have longer hair than that, expect to be here for more hours it is a long process but let me tell you how worth it, it truly is. I waited after my first wash to make a review so I can confirm the treatment and my hair is still just as straight as he left it!!! Guys, I had such bad curly wavy hair and it looked so horrendous. I would leave my hair in a pony tail and after this, I feel so brand new. My hair feels so healthy too!!! My hair was so frizzy and damaged and too many split ends to count but he brought my hair back to life and I'm so happy with the results. He truly left me feeling confident and he will take care of you. He has great stories and conversations with you. The place was great. It was bright and very clean. They just decorated for Christmas and it looked so cute. As for price, they were very reasonable I was shocked. I paid $220 for my haircut and treatment.
