I walked in just to make an appointment. The hairstylist (man) didn't look up from his client that he was taking care of. I waited patiently. He looked me up and down (in disgusted look) I was dressed for my office. I asked if I could make an appointment or get a consult? He said, "I don't take new clients, please leave". Osman is amazing! He is truly an artist. I get a full foil and usually hair stylists do row by row and I have a line when my hair grows out. Not with Osman, he colors with the way my hair grows, there are never any lines, and it looks so natural! And the way he cuts is just pure perfection. I chopped my hair... well he did... and I was so scared but he gave me the most perfect cut for my face. I am about to move to Atlanta but I'm strongly considering making trips back to California when I need my hair done! He is a super hard worker, open everyday but Sundays, all day. I called the salon to schedule an appointment but the owner said he doesn't take new clients so I asked if he could recommend someone and he said that he could not because he doesn't know anyone in the area. I'm disappointed. The previous reviews were great and I've been looking for someone to cut my hair who has a vision based on his experience and my head/ face features so it grows out nicely. Hairport is a hidden gem. The owner is one of the top hair stylist I've known. Previously, I've had my hair done in Beverly Hills at Jose Eber with a great stylist (he moved back to France a few tears ago.) I was in need if a replacement. Thankfully, my mother referred me. What a find!!! The owner has a special sense where he has the ability to look at your hair and shape of head/face to create a gorgeous haircut/style. He is a hair genius!! I hesitated for months in writing this review as this is a solo practitioner hair stylist, results in this profession are somewhat subjective, & hair DNA may not match expectations. But, for my almost-haircut experience, I felt others need to know. Appt time & decor: I made an appointment & was seen on-time. Salon was clean, sorta 80s-ish decor in a missed-the-mark, wanna-be retro way. But, I seriously do not care abt decor if the stylist knows how to cut hair. Asinine way of choosing hair style: After washing my hair (nothing special), I told Osman my desired general style of cut - medium length, layers for my wavy/curly hair. Osman repeatedly made it clear that he does not cut according to MY desired style; he cuts according to what HE believes goes with the shape of head & type of hair. After debating with me abt the shape of my "head" (not face) & whether my hair was curly/not (are you kidding me? ... like the person who's had this hair for decades wouldn't know), I asked questions like: can you give me an idea of the style cut you have in mind? He could not. He made it clear, it was a "trade secret" ... at least, until I walk-out with it. WT ...?!?! I asked - what if I (the customer who's gotta wear this style for potentially months) doesn't think it goes with my face? What if you're wrong? His answers were: it will go with your "head" (again, not face), & I'm not wrong. It would've been one thing if he could show me genius in his cuts - he had no pics to provide. (Sorry, but the Yelp pics were ... never mind.) For years, I went to the stylist who was a consecutive winner for his cuts at the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA). Needless to say, I am intimately familiar with an excellent cut. After paying $200 for a cut alone & having to drive to So. OC only to wait 2-3 hours for my appt (yes, it was frustrating to say the least), I have been on the search for a local, "close enough" alternative for the past couple of years. It would've been one thing if I had seen a cut on someone else who then recommended Osman. This was not the case. He was asking me to have huge faith in his "vision" based on his word - unfounded & unproven, at that. I politely told him - thank you, but this way of haircutting was too bizarre for me. Osman treated me as if I had done something wrong. Reeeally? Is this how it's done now where the stylist picks the style & surprises the customer at the end? When I left, I was furious -- he should've compensated me for my wasted time ... or at least apologized for NOT having informed me on the phone when I made the appt of his maddening, unorthodox, ... asinine way of running his salon. read more
