Amazing experience! I was long overdue for a haircut and my beard was an overgrown mess because I was trying to grow it out to get reshaped after the last place butchered it. I've never been to American Shave before and I scouted them on Yelp before going. They had great reviews except for a couple negative comments about a guy named Maverick, but I was impressed with the owners commitment to follow up and make things right so I took a chance and went in as a walk in. I ended up getting a Signature Cut and Shave. The staff was friendly from the second I opened the door. The drink menu was a nice touch. I was greeted by my barber and when I sat he introduced himself; wouldn't you know...it was Maverick. At first I was a little concerned but that trepidation quickly went away. Maverick was awesome. He was professional. Did a stellar job. Carried on a great conversation over multiple topics. It wasn't long before we were laughing with each other like we were college buddies. His suggestions and attention to detailed were on point. Everyone else in the other chairs seemed to be having a pleasant experience too. The hair cut and beard trim was easily the best I ever received. If you're looking for a place to get a cut and shave from a clean, friendly place with competent barbers who know what they're doing then look no further than American Shave. And if you really want a great experience, ask for Maverick. Don't know why he had negative comments - I guess everyone is entitled to have one of those days. But based on my experience, he got hosed by someone looking for a freebie. read more

They ask for your credit card up front just to book the appointment- it doesn't shout trust! I mean it's not even about the card it's the principle and their attitude, which already was less than cordial over the phone! This was the first time I have ever experienced a shave with straight razor and hot face towels . Upon entering the establishment, I was very very impressed. The decor was very professionally, and we were greeted respectfully and asked immediately if we would like a drink. I accepted a soda since I don't drink alcohol, but alcohol is available wine, and hard liquor. I thought this was a great touch and was impressed. However, the shave itself was not as satisfying as I had hoped. The beard trim was outstanding and the barber did a very, very good job trimming my goatee. However, I felt that the shave was supposed to be a 30 minute session, but I doubt whether it took more than 20 minutes; I could be wrong. But I was expecting much more and I was disappointed. My feeling was that since this was a shave with a straight razor with two passes it would really give me a close shave. Also, I expected more of a face massage with the treatment however, this was maybe a one minute massage with facial gel. When I got home, I felt my face and there were spots which were not cleanly shaved. Overall, I was disappointed, but the staff is extremely friendly. Since this was my expa straight razor shave I am going to try other barbershops and rate accordingly. I'm not suggesting you don't go here. That's not my point but for my first time, I was a little disappointed. I just felt they could take a little more time giving me a closer shave which I expected. read more

I left very disappointed yesterday, 5/28. I had an appointment with Maverick for the signature cut and beard trim. I have long hair and was hoping to get a light trim, about half an inch taken off the length and was immediately told that he does not cut long hair. I find that unacceptable for a barbershop which has these prices for cuts. I wasn't offered anything in place, just a refusal. Typically, I would have left and gone to another location but I am in a time crunch with a vacation in Miami coming up and had no other options. He was able to do everything else I asked for, shave the sides to the skin and the beard trim however the whole process felt rushed as if it were a chore. I felt like I was a nuisance the entire time. This was the third or fourth time I've been and I would say maybe half the times I've left disappointed. I'm new to the area and finding a new barber is very difficult which is fine but the overall experiences I've had have been underwhelming. Last thing, after paying and still leaving a generous tip despite the experience, I saw that my beard was left uneven in areas which I had to correct myself at home and I was left with beard and/or hair product on my neck with noticeable chunks of what I believe was the beard oil in my beard. I don't like leaving bad reviews as I have worked in the service industry myself, but I felt compelled to this time unfortunately. I've went to this place for years now. Different locations, some different people, new services. ALL of these transitions have been wonderful. I have never had a bad cut from any of the staff. Never been treated any way but professionally and super nice. I've never had a problem when booking with their online system either. I also love their selection of products and their willingness to help figure out how to make them work for you. Lastly, I have to comment that I first went to them primarily because they were close to my home. Well, I moved and they're not close anymore. It hasn't detered me one bit. The drive is not enough to change places. I rely on my looks for my job as a performer. The consistent quality of service is the #1 thing they provide and that is absolutely golden. I've been coming to the establishment for over a year now. I always enjoyed it and was always satisfied with my service. I will not be going back after the raised their prices from 38.00 for a Traditional Skin Fade to now 45.00. That is outrageous. There is now way their overhead has increased by the much to charge an extra 7.00 per cut. And that was not the only service they increased prices on. They also don't even have a receptionist. Barbers are being interrupted while servicing their clients to answer the phone. So you raise the prices and I get worse service than before because my haircut is being interrupted by my barber because they have to answer the phone? I don't know where my hair would be without American Shave. Most women's hair cuts cost $60 or more in the Sarasota area. Here every cut is $25 no matter your gender. I wear my hair short and like to be experimental. They do a great job with fades, designs, textures, etc. They are also LGBT-friendly and kid-friendly. Very happy with this business! I was a best man (maid?) in a wedding recently and scheduled an appointment for the groom for a haircut on the day of his wedding. The groom was very pleased with the complimentary beverages (beer, water, sodas) while he waited for his appointment and the barber, Ben was very detailed with the cut and was fun and not bothered at all by several groomsmen hanging out and razzing the groom as he got his cut. He was extremely pleased with the results and looked dapper and well-put-together for the nuptials. The place was clean, smelled really good, and all the employees were in great moods and appeared to love working there. I decided to treat myself to a man's spa morning for a shave and a haircut. I did at a place in Lakewood Ranch and was indifferent about it, but decided to give it a second shot. I'm glad I did. Normally, you have to make an appointment online but it was early enough in the day where I was able to walk in and get a shave and haircut combination for $55. Amber was my "barber". I think it is to their advantage to have a woman work on you instead of a man. I felt more relaxed. She did a great job except she missed hairs just below the nostrils. I can come back for a 2 week maintenance on my hair cut if i have time or get a membership for $75-150 per month. read more
