While there were some issues brought about by miscommunication from the managers, the review is based on the physical job performed.. We hired them for both packing and moving. The ground level packing and moving teams were accommodating and competent during interactions with them. Due to the amount of stuff being moved, it required more workers and it took more time than originally thought. And on moving day they did a great job fitting everything onto the trucks. In the end we thought it was worth the cost. Another convenience was the quick responses and communication, and even the free estimate which they scheduled very soon after contacting them. However, after they packed, we found several items just left on floors next to boxes, and even an entire half of a closet that was left untouched. Then as we unpacked the boxes at the new house, we found two things worth note: 1) while they did use packing materials, there were still several boxes in which heavy items had been put directly on top of fragile and breakable items. (Example, they packed a laptop computer, in a large box, using the laptop as the base, piling everything in on it. 2) the movers put the large (unpacked items) and any boxes we directed, mostly in the correct rooms. But for at least half the packed boxes, even though the packers marked them, they ended up in completely different rooms than they should have been (ex. Boxes marked dining room placed in the office. Masterbedroom boxes in the basement. Family room boxes in the kids bedroom.) They got everything from point A to point B. There was minimal damage (some broken table tiles on our patio table was the only thing we noticed when they unloaded at the new house, on moving day), but they do carry insurance and I know it wasn't intentional. We are able to submit a claim directly to them, and they'll deal with the insurance. Pricewise they were a good deal compared to other companies charging for the same services. read more

What was really impressive is that Alex, the owner of the company, offered a same day in person estimate for a last minute move. I was hesitant at first because I have never used movers before. What I liked about American Smart Moving Services is their honesty and professionalism. The estimate was on point and simple! No hidden fees. I used 4 movers and it took them 7 hours to complete (including 1-2hr travel time). We had A LOT of stuff to move! On the day of the move, the guys worked fast, encouraged us to relax while they handled the heavy lifting, they covered the flooring and never complained even after going up and down 4 flights of stairs (which I felt bad about). They would carry big furniture on their backs! I was mind blown and out of breath just watching them. They were very strategic in placing things on the truck so that taking the things down was easier. They were also very careful with fragile items and careful not to scratch the new walls. My move started out rough - I couldn't get into my storage unit so I asked if we could change plans a bit and the guys had absolutely no problem adjusting for me. These guys are great! Alex came out and quoted the job (emptying a townhouse and a storage unit to move into a house) using a 26' truck. I told him that everything would not fit, since I had moved the same amount of stuff the year before with a different company and that company had to send a second truck. When it turned out that I was correct, he immediately sent a second truck (so the move wasn't delayed) and charged a very nominal additional fee. As to the movers themselves, David and his crew were unbelievably hard working, as well as very pleasant. They did everything we asked them (including moving a couple of things twice, since we changed our minds where they should go) and never gave any hint of annoyance. There was also virtually no damage to the furniture or the house. They protect the floors and are very careful with the walls. I would recommend them wholeheartedly based on their work, but it also turns out that their prices are very reasonable. A friend of mine was charged about 25% more for a job that was about 1/2 the size. I don't intend to move again, but if I ever did, they are the only company I would contact. read more

One thing I liked that Alex came in person to offer us a complimentary estimate, and that I could pay my deposit via a check and not a credit card. We hired their services to move within the NoVA area. Alex and 4 other guys arrived at 7:15 AM, and began promptly at 7:30 AM. These guys were kinda skinny looking but turned out to be pretty darn strong and very hard working. I don't think they took a single break till their 15 minute lunch break. Our move took a total of 8 hours, during which they wrapped all our stuff, un-assembled and reassembled the bed room furniture and some tables etc., loaded and unloaded the stuff, and also took some moving boxes away that we were going to trash. We had a great experience with Alex and team -- both the communication beforehand and day of. The pricing was clear and straightforward, and they were even willing to make an extra stop to pick up our friend's grill. What impressed me most was that they really cared for our belongings -- they wrapped up everything in moving blankets and tape, and shrink-wrapped certain items as well. I'm also in my late 30's, so I'm well past the point where I need to be lifting boxes into a Uhaul and offering my friends pizza and beer. Both times I've relied on Alex and his team, they've knocked it out quickly, carefully, and efficiently. It boggled my mind both times how quickly they could tear through the items to be loaded and unloaded like locusts. Movers charge by the hour, but these guys never milk that. The hourly rate is eminently reasonable and there were no "gotchas." They provided free wardrobe boxes which is just so helpful. I used Alex and his team to move a few items from my house, including a treadmill. When they tried to get the treadmill out the front door, some damage was done to the hardwood floor because no blankets, towels, or rugs were put down to protect it. The damage wasn't a big deal to me - it could easily be fixed. I sent an e-mail to see how to proceed with getting it fixed or getting compensated for the damage. I was assured that they would have a contractor come out to see me to assess the damage. It is now one month since the move. No one has come to assess the damage. Alex has stopped responding to my e-mails. When I called to ask him to resolve the situation, he all but hung up on me saying that he was too busy because he was working (understandable, but he handled it very rudely) and did not ever return my call. If the contractor had come out and communication had been continued by Alex, I'd have rated them probably at four stars or maybe more! However, I feel that this situation was handled extremely unprofessionally and I feel very cheated. I would not recommend using them. I have used other companies that handled damages to the house in a much more professional manner and this was not at all what I would have expected from a moving company. The last communication from Alex was July 4. I have sent additional e-mails on July 4, 10, and 12 with still no response to any of those. If you want a worry-free moving experience, I would suggest looking elsewhere. read more
