Overall A - Just have a strategy and you'll have a great day. This is my thrift store of choice, but I only go when I have no time limit. I agree with the other Jennifer L.--, wandering a massive thrift store is practically a sport. For me AT is a guilt free pleasure and well deserved break from work. Parking: Avoid the small lot during peak times. Park on the street or in the lot across the street. Pricing: Yes, prices are creeping up, but that's the case for all thrift stores, and this is a for-profit store. I do see some weird "Wheel of Fortune pricing" on random items (like Corning Ware or Vince clothing), but I just let it go. There are still deals to be found, and they are replenishing items all day long. Discounts & Bags: Look at the monitors to see what is 50% off, or snap a pic of the today's sales sign on your way in. A note on shopping bags: yes, they make you check them in. Bring a huge blue IKEA bag, check it in, get your ticket, and grab a cart. Carts disappear fast on busy days. Dressing Rooms & Bathrooms: There are 3 fitting rooms and 2 bathrooms. They will ask you to park your big shopping cart outside because it's a cramped setup, and there is a 5-item max allowed in the fitting room at a time. The Elevators: They are not broken; they are just slow. It's an old factory building, and the elevators are shared with the staff who are restocking all areas all day long. It just requires some patience. The One Change I'd Make: I wish they would hang up some mirrors--at the very least near the coats or scarves. It would save so many extra trips back to the dressing room. Checkout: The line to pay ebbs and flows. It can be winding around the store, or it can have four people total. Even when the line looks scary, it does move. The cashiers are friendly; sometimes one might be having an off day, but that is rare. read more

Okay, I had what a blast here with my daughter yesterday. I decided we needed a day of thrift shopping. When you drop a lot of weed, you don't want to have to replace your whole wardrobe at premium prices. I picked up some great pieces for someone. My age, things like Liz Claiborne and Ann Taylor dresses & blouses. I found a great pair of Michael kors pants, too. But my absolute favorite find was a pair of Sergio Valente jeans from the very early '80s that I coveted when I was young. I never had them, I wanted them, and they fit! They look brand new and we're only $7.99. My daughter bought a whole bunch of stuff including a really cute hello Kitty sweater. We got so much stuff. We overfilled the bag and still only paid 60 bucks. I can't wait to go back, there is so much stuff. You do have to wait on a long line to check out. However, I thought it was worth it considering how much we brought home. read more

Somewhat of an extremely chaotic experience. Workers are obviously on some sort of time schedule with their carts because they do not care about the patron. They were the major turn off. Each worker was rude, and pushy with the exception of the cashiers. Aisles are too narrow for shopping carts, especially when crowded. I visited on a Wednesday which happened to be senior day. Lots of options, however, great difficulty in getting to them. Not exactly budget, friendly, not sure that the value was there on any of the items, for a thrift store. Prices have skyrocketed to the point of being unrealistic for a secondhand shop. Nearly everything is suddenly labeled "premium" or "designer," even when it's clearly not--and it feels like every jacket is $50+ now. On top of that, the half-off color tags are almost never found anymore, which makes the "sale" system feel pointless. It's frustrating to see a place that was once affordable and fun become so overpriced. Judging by the recent reviews, I'm definitely not the only one feeling this way. I truly hope they re-evaluate their pricing strategy because they're losing loyal customers fast. When in the store you constantly hear other customers complaining to each other about he recent price increase. If the pricing were even somewhat reasonable, I would happily spend more here--but recently I've found myself walking out empty-handed because everything is priced so far beyond what makes sense for a thrift store. If you love the thrill of a good thrift, this is the place to go. I have been a customer of American Thrift for a few years now and in my opinion this is the best thrift store in New Jersey (I should know, I've been to many). American Thrift is a massive three floor warehouse. They have everything you could possibly think of from clothing and accessories to furniture and home goods. They truly have something for everyone. And while most items are previously owned, there have been many times that I've bought items that were new with tags. Their prices are very reasonable in comparison to other thrift store chains. Also, though they have tons of inventory, this is by far the most organized thrift store I know of. The clothing items are separated not only by category but also by color. Be prepared to make a day out of visiting American Thrift because there are a lot of gems to be discovered. Avoid going on the weekends if possible because this place does get packed! However don't be discouraged by a long line, it does move fast and there is a bunch of home decor to browse along the wall while waiting in line. P.S. check their social media for deals of the day ahead of time. Would not recommend this thrift store. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE vintage clothing - THIS STORE IS NOT IT.. First off, there's a parking lot with barely any parking. The store is located in a plaza with many other stores.. cars were double parked and had to park across the street in Home Depot for parking. The store itself is housed in a warehouse type setting with 2 floors. Honestly, the place looked dirty .. seems like the clothes were very basic looking and had a mark up. The colors of the clothing were placed together but I didn't really see the value of purchasing them. Honestly, the clothes looked like they were at a garage sale that was donated because nobody wanted it. I hate to be so harsh but I drove a little over 45 mins to get here because someone on IG said it was the biggest thrift store in Jersey BUT "Biggest" doesn't always equate to the "Best". If you're a reseller, don't even spend your time here. You won't make a profit. They mark up anything thats genuine leather or vintage even if it's not a well known brand, coach bags for example are 50$ or so already, everything designer is separated and priced up. If you're looking for winter coats or skates then this is a very good outlet, genuinely. Otherwise... If you want cheap looking colors and materials, then this is the place to go. Frankly the clothes are pretty basic and boring, they look outdated and not in a stylish way... most stuff is 1.99-8.99, but like i said most of the stuff worth taking home is marked up anyway. for such a huge building with such a huge stock, there's surprisingly little to take home. This is such an amazing thrift store!!! This store has 2 floors filled with an extensive amount of clothing, books, shoes, bags, & more. They had name brands like coach, Kate spade, Zara, H&M, Torrid, old navy, lane Bryant, etc. I bought 4 items which included old navy sweat pants, torrid jeans, Christmas pj pants, and the Kate spade clutch in the photos. All 4 items cost me $16. Upon checkout the cashier asked for my phone number because they have a rewards point system. For each dollar you spend you get rewards for future purchases. They accept cash and card here but they have a small charge for using card. I was pleasantly pleased with the amount of plus size clothing they had here. I will definitely be returning read more

I purchased a Lorex home security camera system for $150. What was in the box? 1. All documentation, 2. A camera, not two. 3. A bridge and 4. Wiring. What wasn't in the box? 1. Control Center. 2. Battery for the one camera. What does this mean? The system is useless with the missing components. I called the store immediately upon unboxing and was told by a male head cashier to go in the next day and they would take care of it. At the store, I spoke to a female head cashier and was advised that the male head cashier didn't say that and meant to go in and explain. Not true. He specifically said they would take care of it. Stealing people's money for subpar goods is UnAmerican! Not to mention the way I was spoken to and treated by the staff. PROS: I have to say this is the best thrift store ive ever been to. 2 floors, huge sections, large varieties of electronics, games, dvds/cds, clothing, bric-a-brac, glassware, you name it. Nice service as well along with great prices. Most things aren't even junk. They have loads of parking and a lot of registers open CONS: There was a language barrier between most of the workers and I. Also its located in a very crimeful city. Excellent thrift store that's organized by color, which is the best! It's two floors with a ginormous women's section that spans the first and second floors. Large shoe section with tons of heels and boots, also spotted some Uggs! The clothing was all in very good condition, tons of beautiful blouses you can wear to work, many dresses including long ones for special occasions, and a bunch of sweaters and jeans. I also saw great brands like Victoria secret, free people, Calvin Klein, top shop and more! There's also a small home goods section but I didn't see any books or furniture, but I was more into the clothes so it's possible it's there and I just missed it. The prices are very decent, I got a sweatshirt for $6! My friend got $80 jeans for $2 so we left very happy. I didn't see any signage for additional percentage off a certain color tag but again I could've missed it - there was so much to see! I can't wait to go back! read more

This is the most expensive thrift store I have ever visited. Items are generally priced at $15-$50 regardless of condition. Completely arbitrary pricing as well. If you like spending $50 for used garments, which is what they will cost new, this is the place for you. I prefer the salvation army down the street, much more reasonable. read more

Wahh!! If you like thrifting, this is your jam! I absolutely loved walking through all the aisles to browse for treasures. They have 2 floors of merchandise, mostly clothing but a nice variety of other things as well such as toys, books, shoes, Housewares, and jewelry. I definitely likes the women's blazer/jacket section. Everything is organized by color on the clothing racks which made it easier to shop. They have different sales everyday . This USED to be a great thrift store but in the past year greed has ruined the store. It is BY FAR the most expensive thrift store I've visited. It wasn't always this way which is why it's so unfortunate. They are ridiculously overpriced. They sell items that are stained, torn beyond repair, missing belts, missing buttons, etc. They have yellow tags items that will cost you more than buying the item at a retail store without stains or holes. I don't know who they have doing the research on pricing but they couldn't be more off. I would like to add, they have an elevator that was broken for months, they provided no other access to their second floor when using a stroller, or a shopping cart. They have a freight elevator but the workers would not allow you use it. This place has become such a turn off. It's a shame. Such greed. read more

I live in Long Island and shop at the Baldwin location a lot, so I was really excited to shop here, as my friend had told me how big and awesome it is. I made it a point to stop here when visiting my friend in Jersey. I was only in for like 30 min, but wow. This place, like the Baldwin location, does have overall nice inventory, but the pricing is outrageous. I THINK this one is worse than Baldwin. Used Frye boots for $149, old/used (and visibly worn) Sorel boots for $80, Marc Fisher boots for $60, Tory Burch rubber sandals for $100!!!! AGL super worn flats (expensive retail, totally out of style) for $25. They also write the prices in sharpie all over the bottom of the shoe, which devalues it. I went through all of the shoes and was absolutely shocked at the pricing. There were VERY few things that weren't marked absolutely ridiculously. I quickly looked at dresses/bags/jackets before leaving bc I know the Baldwin location still prices some of those reasonably, but the pricing was equally insane at this location. I would give this place 1 more chance if I had about 2 hours to really dig through, but in 30 minutes... I didn't find anything remotely tempting. So, so disappointing. It's crazy to me, that in the NY metro area, I can go to places like Crossroads, Buffalo, Beacons Closet, even sometimes Plato's closet and sift through curated racks of gems neatly organized and sorted by size. Those stores PAY for their inventory and still price it so much significantly lower than a thrift where you don't have any of that benefit of getting a curated selection (I got my favorite pair of Frye boots from crossroads for $32.50, and they always have multiple pairs for Frye boots priced under $70 in a variety of sizes). I would 100% prefer to shop at a curated consignment store that prices less than half the price of a thrift. Not to mention, retailers have sales where you can buy brand new, current season items for cheaper than these prices (and of course, resale platforms too). The 'hunt' isn't fun if it's impossible to find treasure Behind the counter, I noticed at least 1 fake (Balenciaga). They definitely know because the prices it $129 and they would have priced it wayy higher. The last time I was at the Baldwin location, almost everything behind the counter was fake. That's a whole different level of disappointing/dishonest and another reason that their pricing is insulting. Not to mention illegal. I know thrift stores can kind of slip through the cracks but it's so deceptive. They had 2 vintage Guccis that were real, but not priced competitively. Do not buy designer items here unless you know them well enough to authenticate, or are prepared to put up a fight after potentially getting items authenticated (because I believe everything is final sale) Overall..I was so excited to stop here, but go to the Goodwill Outlet 20 min away if you're looking to score actual good deals and a treasure hunt. Out of town and found so many goodbyes, jeans, shirts, hoodies, coach bags, all the things my teenage girls loved. UGG boots were the favorite. Definitely recommend this place. I used to love this store until they started to allow dogs in. You have dogs rubbing themselves on clothing. Barking all over. I saw another dog whose owner was letting him lick plates by the housewares shelves. I mean come on! Let's keep the items your selling clean. Not everyone is courteous and actually controls their dog. On the other hand. If you'd like to someday own the store, go by when all the dogs are there. I'll rank American Thrift above Red, White, and Blue but below 2nd Avenue. Not a lot of staff, the merchandise is about the same level as RWB, but they need help to keep the merchandise organized. No groupings by size is disappointing. You have to go through every item in an area, while if it's grouped you can save a lot of time. Additionally the items on the racks should be hung in one direction. I know shoppers don't always replace things properly, but someone should rearrange things periodically. A pleasant part was the charming woman who rang up my button down Ralph Lauren Oxford. She complimented my choice and bantered with my friend, who pointed out she chose that one! read more

Your "why" for coming here will determine your experience. If you're looking for name brand high end clothes for an extremely low (and unreasonably low) price this is not your spot. This is a great spot to look for normal pieces to fill your wardrobe. I supplemented my work clothes for extremely reasonable prices. ~8 good pieces and a mug for 25 ish bucks. Shop sticker sales and special holidays for extra reduced pricing. Also join their points program to earn 20% off in the future. Cashier lines move quick. Staff is always kind. I used to like this place a few years ago. Selection has massively gone down. Prices have gone up. The leather jacket prices are laughable. A lot of the clothes are cheap/cheaply made. Staff are nice overall, but the check out line was so long I ended up just setting the few items I had down and leaving. Won't be going back anytime soon unfortunately. read more
