I love that it's color coordinated, and there's a good variety of things. My only issues are with pricing and just that a lot of younger resellers go and snatch a lot of things up :(. I don't think anything in the store should be more than $15 with the exception of jackets (which should be $25 max). After all, this is meant to be a thrift store and all the items for sale are donated. It just feels like a bummer finding pants that fit you and flipping the tag over to see it's $32 despite having dog hairs on it and having a stain. I also thing it's jut over the top to include a 25¢ transaction fee too, no matter if you're paying with cash or card as if the clothes aren't already marked up. I do like that there's 50% off on certain days, and I will say probably 75% of the clothing feels appropriately marked but the GOOD clothing can be costly. Don't think i'd really visit again moving forward, but if you have a good budget range and are lookin for jackets, shoes, scarfs, homeware, etc. this is your spot! read more

This place is huge, with a ton of clothing options! They have a full section for men, a wide variety of styles and really cheap! I bought about 11 shirts for only $50! That's pretty cheap when you compare it to name brand stores that charge $50 for 1 shirt. I will say however the line at checkout moves super slow. So if it's crowded then prepare to wait awhile. And depending on your size it might be hard to find clothes you like because the sizes are random. Other than that though, if you're looking to buy more clothes for cheap then this should be your goto place! read more

This place used to be a gem before the resellers came in. You can't hope to find anything after the same mac demarco guy is there everyday going through each fresh rack not allowing anyone else to find clothes. The amount of resellers that hobbit this place is despicable. Carts overflowing of items that they will never wear, only for their own profits. read more

I love this store and have recommended it to many of my friends. I always seem to find a few things every time I go. Being a dancer, I load up on twirly skirts, and when people ask where I get my skirts, I am happy to tell them about American. The only problem I find is that when I go on seniors day, and seniors are supposed to get a great percentage off of certain color price tags, it is impossible to find a single item with that discount color tag. read more

Yesterday was the first time I went to American Thrift in Baldwin, and I enjoyed my shopping time there. The store is well organized and you can find many things you might be looking for, if you are looking for a specific item. There are sections for books, cds, dvds, shoes (tons of different style boots), toys, jewelery, blankets & sheets, dishes, and knickknacks, and, of course, clothing. I bought two cds. Each cd was $1.99, which is a fair price. I know some thrift stores charge much more for a cd. I didn't find any clothing I wanted, but I did find the prices to be excellent on clothes, even if they were not on sale. When you walk into the store, there is a big electric sign displaying the sales for that day. I also discovered that Wednesday is senior discount day, which is helpful to know. The cashier, who rang up my purchases, was friendly and helpful. She signed me up for frequent customer rewards, explained how it worked, and she also told me that the senior discount begins at 50! There is also a bathroom available, which helps when one has to go when shopping. There are two dressing rooms, so one might have to wait a while to try on clothing. The store is in a shopping center, so parking is easy to find. It is a nice store to shop in, especially for clothes, and I will be back to shop. read more

This is one of my go-to treasure hunt spots! I'm an avid thrifter, and I find my best deals on art, books, and clothing here. I also love the random baggies - I'm always looking for bags of candles and note pads and there are baggies of them here on the regular. A dressing room and bathroom are also a huge plus. One critique? I also collect vintage art glass and glassware/dishware and find the hard goods shelves to be almost bare too often. If this store could increase space to carry more furniture it would be heaven! read more

When visiting this establishment, I realized that there's an employee taking pictures of me and other customers using her cellphone. I went after her and asked why she was taking pictures of me and then she denied she wasn't, okay I was not satisfied with her reply, so I asked a cashier named Zaya, who is that lady? she said she is the "production manager". Here is the thing if you think I am stealing something and taking pictures of customer is the right thing you are very wrong, this is against the law, there's no proof in pictures so if the store has cameras and they can check people in and out what they are wearing why is that lady taking pictures? so I requested to talk to that production manager, and I said I am calling the cops and then she became pale and she said I am just taking orders from the owner and I asked can I talk to the owner? she said he is not around and I asked what is his name? she said Nick. So apparently this owner gaslight these poor employees in order to not get blamed by his erratically behavior! The store has cameras why all this? they can check customers in and out what they are wearing! As a psychologist student from Nassau Community College, I will be writing an essay about this matter! The experience could've been better but the moment you walk inside the store they watch you like a hawk. They watch you like you are stealing something, I've never ever felt so uncomfortable. I told the cashier the named Dinora, this is very unprofessional to treat the customers like they were a thieft, "she said I am just following the owner's guidelines". recently went to the Baldwin location, even donated books . Was surprised to see the sign about the supply fee .25 cents per transaction. Seriously, you get most of your goods to be sold from donations, you have a charge bag fee, you have a surcharge for cc transcations ( those I understand) but can't see the "supply fee" as you call it. there are plenty of other donation shops to go to, where they don't charge extra, appreciate the customers, friendlier staff & they give you a coupon for donating . Ridiculous place. Abnormally high prices, rude workers, sketchy clientele, almost everything is torn, stained, etc. But the straw that broke the camel was when I tried to buy a Guess sweater marked $2.99. Lady at the register said "oh no, this isn't the price. This is Guess. This'll be at least 5.99" So, i left my stuff- you can't change prices at the register. The prices are literally insane. They do not know how to price merchandise. People are going to your store for secondhand clothing, they should not be paying nearly the same total retail price for donated and mostly used items. I honestly thought I had already given this place 5 stars! So here's the good and the bad. This place is well stocked, always getting in new inventory, and reasonably priced, for the most part. They do mark up some pieces and sometimes it seems there's no rhyme or reason to that. There are still great pieces to find for good prices, and some that you're like 'Why did they price a super damaged Laura Merkin for $40?'. This place is so, so, so much better than every thrift store I have been to in Nassau (sad that we have such a pitiful thrift store selection). I don't really ever leave empty handed and it's super close to me. So...all good things.. why 3 stars? Today I went in to donate and took a peek behind the counter. I noticed 3 Louis Vuitton bags for around $150 each. They all had major damages, so I thought that's why they were priced in the lower end. After having the employee take them down, 2/3 were fake. The real one was in such bad condition that the price was about what you could get it for online, but the issue is 2 blatantly fake bags being sold for $150. When I gave the bags back, I told the girl working that only one was real and she kinda giggled like 'we know that.' Selling fakes is illegal and I know it's a gray area for thrift stores (still illegal, but you can get away with it), but selling them for $150, knowingly, is incredibly unethical. I haven't been to this thrift store in months, so I'm not sure if it's under new management, but that is bad enough for me to take off 2 stars. I was also shocked to see that because in the past, fake bags have been on the main rack (not behind the counter) for like $5. I saw they had Chanel espadrilles for $250, but knowing that they were selling fakes and I'm not as familiar with fakes of those shoes..I didn't even ask to see them. I will proceed with extreme caution on paying up for items here. With that said, they do have mostly real items behind the counter, there are great deals to be had in this store, and I will continue to shop there (even though that really left a bad taste in my mouth), just make sure you know your stuff if you're planning on splurging because it would really suck to spend $150 on a bag worth $1, and it's really not right that they're doing this. read more

When they first opened a few years ago - their prices were FAIR enough for a small upstart thrift store. I had not shopped there in a year or so and today - no surprise - their prices JUMPED way up to levels of pure RIP OFF a la Savers and Goodwill . Of note: Oversized art & coffee table books marked $24.95 ! And on and on and on. To make my butt even MORE SORE: it was "half off ticket day". Purple, White & Green tickets: half off . Which WOULD have been a great deal HOWEVER - every damn ticket in the store was RED. Like every single ticket!! The people who work here were probably just fired from their former job: texting and smoking pot. I bought about $10.00 worth of used CDs and felt ripped off when I left . Not coming back here. Disgusting stained and torn, I found a gross bandaid in one of the pockets of a coat. Overpriced - the money they make goes right into the owners pocket, no charity. No customer service- you would think they would want to unload the crap they sell. You can't open the plastic bag crap because someone might steal something..give me a break, ..I asked to speak to the manager and the " female manager came over and shook her head to the cashier no. Didn't even bother to talk to me. ..but I get it it's low paid employees so the owner makes more money. I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN. went today to shop,upon check out i noticed a 25 cent surcharge when i asked about it.i was told we charge every customer that! Its like when u use a charge card i said im paying cash though!!!! well it helps keep our prices low,WTF who does that ????? I had to use the bathroom very badly, and I politely asked to use it but the worker insisted she had to "clean it" first which only consisted of her changing the garbage bag and sweeping a few pieces of tissues off of the floor, which could've waited. It's always overwhelming and panic nervous going here and I felt extremely uncomfortable I've went during sept Oct and nov And it's usually the same experience . it's always so packed and the employee's are SO rude. I fully understand and speak spanish despite "looking white" and while shopping i got told by an employee that i was just leaving clothes everywhere and that she couldn't wait for the store to close so all my clothes can just be left behind and I would end up with nothing. she was telling everyone I was not putting them in right places even though it was my first time there and I didn't know where to put them since there is only racks for clothes and not a "not buying rack" unless u are at the checkout to leave the clothes u don't want. And i can speak for a lot of people it gets overwhelming keeping track of what u want and don't want Especially if u plan to buy over 10 things. The employee even pointed me out to her co worker Thinking I didn't understand what she was saying Even though I fully did. And even pointed at me For everyone to see. Very Threatening. Also, if you don't speak Spanish forget about even asking for help with an anything at all Unless it's for checking out items. As for fitting rooms my first time, I was Refused to a fitting room because it was " closed " even though it was 6pm and the store closes at 8pm and I saw an an employee helping out other people in the fitting room at the same time I asked but only denying me. Also while you are shopping there is always a million of people on top of you and the bathroom is always full. The employees are always watching closely what u are doing hovering over u constantly to make sure u put clothes in the right area and u can't shop and look at clothes in peace without feeling panic. Other than that I go sometimes just because it's so close and affordable. Sometimes I find some good stuff but it's really a hit or miss The selection isn't bad. Especially for gym clothes and pj's ect but if you are looking for true vintage clothes search elsewhere. i 've been going to the shop since opening day, i lost 110 lbs and was able to buy a complete new wardrobe at reasonable price and with barely worn clothes, if not new. i told numerous people to shop there. my son and husband buy many items there. today i found a jacket from syms with original ticket on itthe jacket was marked $119.00, the thrift store was selling the jacket for $149.00, meiko told me she would sell me the jacket from syms for $119.00. since syms went out of business four years ago, the jacket is at least that old. ebay authenticates their product and accepts returns. it appears that the store looks up prices on ebay and prices articles based on ebay's listing price. when prices are similar, it is safer to buy on ebay. the help is nice, but does not have any concept of selling. the lady in charge of the registers, meiko, is very rude. this is a sad moment for me since i have donated a new high char, $500 dress from nordstrom among other things, i hope the store gets its act together with a more rational pricing policy, especially with reguard to high end items. the reason i am taking all this trouble to write this review is because i really beleive in the cause and i want it to succeed. read more

Everything was fine till it comes time to pay, they're very rude and have no experience with customer service. All they do is talk bunch of nonsense right front of their customers. New staff is not the same like when the store opened. They have no clue what they're doing but they're arguing. The new manager is rude, she's arguing alongside her workers. All I asked is if they can wrap some glass products in paper and put it in a bag, fragile products like that need to be wrapped and put away properly so they don't chip. They were saying they "don't give bags to customers or wrap their glass" but then after some bickering they were wrapping the glass. Not only that but the worker kept leaving snarky remarks. The selection is very good and so are the prices. They have very good jewelry (silver/gold), housewares (expensive companies most days) and a lot of designer if you dig. Clothing, shoes and purses are good some days, bad others. The layout and cleanliness leaves something to be desired, but overall highly recommend. read more

I'm honestly shocked at these other reviews.. which are all borderline racist mind you. This is definitely one of the best thrift stores in Nassau county. The prices are good and the selection is always interesting. My girlfriend has found multiple designer bags for 80% off retail, which she's been very happy with. It really depends on the day, but I've found boat shoes, a huge stack of PS2 games, Soccer Jerseys and lots of vintage clothes. Every time I came since they opened I've found something cool, and I always enjoy coming in. Please don't listen to these racists complaining about the employees, who are typically minding their own business or willing to help if asked. read more

Don't waste your time at American Thrift. The prices are outrageous! Found an off-brand purse priced at $24.99, used Adidas also $24.99 and a handful of used CDs were priced at $3.99 while the sign says all are $1.50. Some people shop thrift to find a deal or find something vintage, but there is a large majority that need to shop thrift and those people are being gouged. In addition to the insane pricing, many garments were torn or had obvious stains. One shirt had two bleach stains on the front and priced at $4.99. If you must put everything on the floor, price it at 99¢ but honestly, it should've been recycled. read more

Good selection and great prices- however my only issue is the cleanliness especially in a time like this. Multiple people, including myself, bought from this location have found used tissues in their sweaters and hoodies that they've bought from here. Trust me, i'm not even exaggerating. This left an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach. Almost like they're having a buy a sweatshirt - get a free used tissue sale .
