The other day I called to find out if my two "missing " items were found, and to see when my check would be mailed. The sales person was busy and rather than put me on hold, she put the phone down. I heard the entire conversation with the customer she was helping ( 10+ minutes). Apparently, some of her items were sold. She attempted to locate the other items in the shop to no avail. I could tell she was upset because she mentioned that the missing items were "high end" and expensive. This just reinforces why this store is dishonest and unorganized. I went there to drop off 2 pairs of Levi's jeans, almost never worn. The store didn't open until a half hour after the posted time of 11:00 am. I told the clerk I had 2 items for the shop. She said: "NO! NO!. We only take appointments, and only if you have 5 items or more." This store policy is not posted anywhere, but I was treated like a misbehaving child. I left items there over 2 months ago. I have been calling on and off for 2 we eks. It's either busy and disconnects, or no one answers even during regular business hours. This place has some decent stuff, not high end designers per se, but some mid level stuff that's in very good condition and not expensive. Now, the staff on the other hand - the ladies are a couple of the most unfriendly people I've come across in a retail shop in a long time. And, their phone manners are poor; abrasive, like why are you bothering me vibes. They hate life? They hate consignment? They hate clothes? I don't care. Don't make it my problem. I am giving 1 star because I have too in order to review. as the other reviews state something here is very very off. if you do bring in clothes to consign please take a picture of every item with there tags etc and before you leave document the time & day. I am still working on getting mine resolved. I bought clothes in to consigned in July.....there computer has it was dropped of in April so now "supposedly" all the items have been "donated". The same day, was a top I bought in with a different account number - when mentioned to the sales associate she said it was hers but had no idea when she bought it in? U have to get lucky with the selection here because they cycle stuff in and out very quickly. It's overpriced in relation to other thrift stores. Shopkeeper was very loud and abrasive. What a great find ! New items come in every day, and many of them sell the very same day. The stock is always changing. Some of the regulars seem to shop here as a sport. The store is filled with women's clothing from mid-range labels to designer labels. The prices are great, and the people who work here are really nice and helpful. True, some new paint, new carpet, and decent air conditioning would be a welcomed bonus. It's not be Saks Fifth Avenue, but it's a lot more fun and significantly less expensive. Nancy who is also teviewing is employed at Next to New and Akexandria, also leave g review is the daughter of the Polish woman who is ALWAYS on the phone. Is this legal? How does one know any truths here, is business run in this matter as well? As others have noted, icebergs as soon as you walk in, absolutely NO customer service. May have some decent product but not worth the unwelcome feeling as you browse the store, one feels the dagger cold stares from all especially the owner, who barely exists. Worst experience. I walked into this place and wasn't greeted it was like I didn't exist. Anyway I took a look around most of the things I could find online, new, for half the cost. Anyway to get to why my experience was so horrible. I walked to the women at the counter. First time she has looked at me while I've been in the store for at least 5 minutes. I asked her a couple of questions regarding some clothes I had brought in. She gave me a look up and down and proceeded to give me a bunch of excuses as to why she could not look at my clothes. This place is an absolute go to spot for low priced designer clothes shoes and bags nestled in the lovely town of Oyster Bay. I always find something great and basically brand new for really good prices. The items are all designer names. This is the best high end consignment shop on Long Island if you ask me. Others are just overpriced. I love how everything is color organized. The half off specials are great. The ladies who work there are always very nice. Wow Pooky G.--are you ever spoiled!! Just another Long Island woman with a sense of entitlement!! I've been a customer and consignee with Next to New for over 10 years and I have only had great experiences. First of all, here's a concept--you get back what you give off. What that means is that if you go into a place with a bad attitude, you shouldn't be surprised to get one back. The women that work there are hard-working, educated, and savvy. Just because she wasn't super-busy when you walked in doesn't mean that she's slacking off. Here's another concept--rules are rules. If you bothered to ask why you need an appointment, you would find out that Next to New has hundreds of active consignees and, in order to manage that, appointments are necessary. Could you imagine what would happen if 100 people, like yourself, decided to drop off clothes at one time. It would be chaos. Just like going to your doctor or hairdresser. But no, you are so important and your clothing is so wonderful that someone should drop everything, bow at you feet, and service you. And I don't know many store that allow dogs--I'm a dog lover and owner and I keep mine home. For any of you who read Pooky's disgruntled review, let me give you the perspective from someone who knows that store. Next to New is a great store--I have found my favorite clothes there. Their prices are terrific, the store is organized, dressing rooms are roomy, and, yes, the staff is friendly and knowledgable but treat them nicely. You do get what you give. Pooky, I hope your house sale takes you off Long Island--too many of you on this small island. If you just took a small amount of time to make a simple phone call in advance, you would have learned "the ropes" of this store. If you were unfortunate enough to NOT have air-conditioning during this on-going heat wave then you're going to love Next To New Boutique ( an upscale thrift store/consignment shop). It is positively freezing in that place and I don't mean it in a good way. Just so you know, I'm selling my house and a perspective buyer was coming so my dog and I had to get out for awhile. I had been driving around for weeks with some clothes I was planning on getting rid of when I decided now would be a perfect time to go to Next To New and see if perhaps I could make some extra money through their consignment shop. I walked in with my dog and a basket of some really nice clothes from when I had an office job. Suits, evening wear and casual Friday outfits..really nice stuff. The woman, who I guess owns and/or runs the place first looked at my dog (who was on a short leash and heeling beautifully thank you very much) with utter revulsion. It was as if she could absolutely see the fleas jumping off of him and onto her clothes. Her gaze then swept over me and with an inordinate amount of disdain in her voice inquired if I had an appointment. An appointment? I need an appointment for you ... why? Because you're so busy folding clothes and ignoring the one other customer that you have no time for someone who had the utter gall to walk in with ...Yikes!...a dog?!? She and her assistant (?) made it crystal clear that without an appointment ( which they did not deign to give me) they couldn't..wouldn't possibly see me or my clothes. I thanked them for being so kind, so accommodating, so helpful, so friendly and left with my dog and my clothes. I can't imagine what has happened to this woman ( and her complicit yet silent side-kick) that convinced her she was above a mere mortal such as myself. Too bad ...they lost a commission AND a customer AND here I am on Yelp telling anyone who is interested how snotty, snooty and just plain nasty these people are. So there! Now I did read a review from someone saying how friendly everyone was. Of course that was four years ago so I can only assume that someone else ran the place back then. Ah, Pooky, you're a sad, sad person who I wish would move so as not to give people yet another excuse to think Long Islanders are obnoxious. This place is just fine. I'm a rule-follower, so according to their policy, I call, make an appointment, and voila, at the date and time of said appointment, I am greeted and serviced with a smile. I have sold as well as bought many items from this shop. The selection is great. The clothes are clean and organized well. The owners are fair and lovely. For the poster who wanted to use the bathroom and was told it was not for public use, I would suggest next time, you go to your local gas station for one. Or better yet, pee before you leave the house like I tell my kids to do! read more

I live in the area and after reading the 2 pervious reviews I figured I'd call to schedule an appt to drop of some clothing at their earliest convenience, since I pass by the store regularly anyway. Today is October 8, I was told the next appt available was in December. LOL!! I don't know what else to say except if you need to get rid of clothes, maybe consider somewhere that is willing to work just a little with your schedule, or donate them to a thrift shop so people who actually need clothes can benefit. I adore this store and find myself doing most of my clothing shopping here. People always ask where I get my clothes, and it always happens to be an item from Next to New. The styles vary anywhere from elegant to club, and I often walk out in disbelief for finding a designer piece for less than half of its original price. On top of the great deals, the owner only accepts items that are in mint condition, which means no stains, holes etc. I've been to other consignment and thrift stores in the area as well as in the city, but nothing quite matches up to the quaint "I'm home" feeling, yet maintains a sense of professionalism, cleanliness, and ridiculously reasonable pricing. If this weren't a consignment shop, I would be convinced that Macklemore based his song,"Thrift Shop," on Next to New. read more

I brought my belongings to this store a few months ago. They had you sign a waiver that they are not responsible for theft. When my items did not sell, I asked to pick them up. Some of my items were put in a bag and the rest I had to shop around the store to get them. However, it is not their policy to put the items in a bag for you. I found all of my items except my very expensive shoes. The clerk said we are not responsive for your stuff. I find it very odd that when I asked to pick up my belongings, they were placed in a Bag except my very expensive shoes were the only thing missing. I called multiple times to speak with the owner Mary St. Laurent to call me. To no avail, she never contacted me. Mary takes no pride in her store. I personally think one of the employees stole my shoes. The shoes were located right next to the register. Do not trust this place with your personal belongings!!!! read more

Let me start off with, I had in the past brought my higher end and many barely used or new with price tags clothing to this store to sell. But, it appears as if something is off... and I mean off!! You sign a waiver for your items and that they are not responsible for said items, but they do not make a list of what they are taking in... And the best part is that on this 45 day or so timeline they "donate your items"... how do they know which items you brought in if they do not write them down may I ask you? So there I am writing down a list of items I am dropping off... and she has the nerve to get annoyed by my taking up a few inches of counter space... comes 45 days and I call to check on the status and they give me the dollar amount I have made. I'm thinking that is not so much for my Stuart Weitzman boots and (same designer) booties, besides many articles from Eileen Fisher, Lafayette 148, Ferragamo cross body handbag, etc.... I am not name dropping, those are most of the items. So I go in within a few days to now have to "shop the store" for my items... of course no Lafayette 148, minimal Eileen Fisher and no Stuart Weitzman boots or booties... and a very low sales price compared to what I saw on the price tags. It's easy to do the math, you get half. But here comes the best part, I asked to see a Burberry tote bag that was out and located near the register. The woman working there said... and I quote "I am taking that" got me thinking, actually taking it or buying it??? Since they claim they are not responsible for your items than how do we know what has been actually sold and what was "TAKEN"... I feel their business has become very questionable... and I am not the only one. I ran into someone else picking up and putting her items in her car, she also felt violated... and did not feel as if she received all her items returned or get paid for... again very disappointing and very questionable is my opinion... I have to say I agree with the woman who had an unpleasant experience at Next to New. I love clothing consignment stores, so I went to check out this store with high hopes, but the staff is really over the top, in a very bad way. The woman who was running the store was too busy eating yogurt out of the container to ask me why I was standing at the front counter looking for information on how their process works. There was another customer she was ignoring as well, so I diidn't feel too bad, but another woman came in who I guess had consigned some items there, and boy was she upset. Apparently (according to their information sheet) once your clothes are dropped off, they can disappear with no trace and the store is not responsible. Fire, theft, or even misplaced by the staff and they can't find it? Sorry, you're out of luck. This customer said she had come to pick up her unsold items and the woman behind the counter said they probably weren't there anymore, and had been donated to "charity," as it had been six weeks that they had been dropped off for consignment. The woman responded she had specifically requested that nothing be donated, because she had consigned more valuable items (the store carries mostly t-shirts and cotton sweaters and dresses that look a little more suited to a thrift store or church charity shop), and the store salesgirl basically told her "Too bad. We gave them away." When the woman said she didn't appreciate that, after she had been assured that would not happen, the woman behind the counter told her "I know you don't." Wow. I was really shocked to see that a saleswoman would treat a customer that way. I followed the customer out of the store, and asked her what happened. She basically said that some of her items she had consigned there never even made it out onto display, and some of those were ones the saleswoman claimed had been "donated," and that she had also lost a few other very expensive items when the store wouldn't give her a list of what had not been sold. They don't really keep track of what items belong to you here. You are told to search the floor for anything you think is yours, and they don't keep or give you a record of what they have donated. I think once you drop your items off at this store, you can kiss them goodbye, unless it sells for $20 and they give you half of that. I took a quick look around, and most of what they sell are $20 shirts and cotton sweaters. If you're looking for quality clothes at low prices, I'd recommend going to the Gap or shopping on Ebay instead, where at least they are polite to you and ask you if you need any assistance, ring you up with a smile, and say have a nice day, please come back again soon. The woman who was behind the counter had a really bad attitude and was very unpleasant. She seemed very condescending to the customers, which is just wrong. She acted like she was too busy to give them the time of day, and it was NOT busy in there at the time. There were maybe two or three other women in there shopping. I personally don't need to pay money to be treated like that. I'd rather give my business to a store that appreciates its customers, and on a side note, I did try a shirt on in their dressing room (they have three tiny closet sized spaces), and they are not roomy at all. They are about two feet from the counter with the register. Between the condescending attitude of the saleswoman when I came into the store (without a dog, by the way) and asked for information, and the way I saw her treating the customers that were there, I would give this store a zero in terms of customer service. I think it is a big ripoff, and there might even possibly be some kind of fraud going on in terms of the the way they don't keep a record of what has been brought in and sold and not sold, and given away, according to the customer who was so upset. I had to buy something for my grandmother for Christmas and I had literally no idea what I was doing. My mother shops at this store and recommended I go here. I ended up getting my grandma a very nice bracelet (she liked it a lot) and for a reasonable price. The person at the register was really nice to me. To be honest, my biggest complaint were the clients themselves. There were two women in the store who were, and I have to censure myself a little bit here, annoying and rude. I can see why some of the reviewers on this site said the cashier seemed tense or rude towards them... IT'S THE CLIENTS WHO ARE THE PROBLEM! I even asked my mother about the clients when I came home and she told me the same thing: that many of the clients drive her nuts. It's the classic golden rule, you treat someone with respect and they'll do the same to you. I treated the clerk kindly and she was nothing but kind and respectful to me as well.
