Do not trust this lying company. Had a signed contract for a cross country move two months in advance. Today was the day and they never showed up. Stranded my family and all our belongings in an apartment with a lease ending in two days. When I called to ask where they were they said "something went wrong. We can come next week." Offered me $200 compensation for a $10,000 move. Honestly criminal behavior. Company should be shut down. read more

I have moved 7 other times, and this was by far my worst experience. Started with your packer stealing 10000 worth of jewelry. The estimate was 50 % low. The move was 2 days late with no communication despite several calls from me. Many items broken or not delivered. Every piece of furniture or electronics is missing hardware or plugs. Several items on the move list were left behind. The company falsely lured me with a low estimate then raised the fee 50%. If I knew the true cost, I would have selected a respected carrier. Customer service was Terrible. Only cared about collecting more money, which they held my belongings hostage until I agreed to pay. The only follow up from customer service was to tell me to delete my negative review, and that per contract i was not allowed to post a negative review (which is a lie). read more

The movers came two days late. Only one person showed up at first. It took two days to pack. We had to cancel our flight because of the delay. We told the driver we could not take delivery until Monday because of the delay. He arrived on Saturday. I had to have a family member meet him who did not know what was supposed to arrive. Several large items were missing, a lot was also broken. I called immediately, left several messages no call backs. Missing items were not reimbursed. Very dissatisfied with the whole process. Absolutely horrible experience. Almost all of the information they gave us was incorrect, which caused us major issues. TL;DR: Avoid American Van Lines at all costs. Our contract stated that our pickup window would be between a Monday and a Wednesday. After calling them multiple times when they didn't confirm a date within that window, they finally confirmed for Monday. They also told us at the last minute that they had outsourced the truck/labor to another moving service since they had overbooked themselves. We were initially assured that they're not a broker and they don't hire third-party services -- so that was a complete lie. On SUNDAY, a full day before the date they confirmed with us and a day outside of our contracted window, a truck rolls up to our place without any prior notice except for one single call 20 minutes beforehand (which we missed -- we weren't home and weren't expecting them). We happened to get home just as the truck got there, and were told that we either had to move our stuff out RIGHT THEN, or take our chances and wait WEEKS for the next truck to come. We did not have that time, our lease would be up. So we had only 30 minutes to finish packing all of our belongings and move out in chaos. They told us weeks prior that their trucks don't even operate on Sundays, but since they chose to outsource to another company, that information was irrelevant (again, no communication about this). They also said the team would be a truck driver plus two movers. It was only one single person who showed up -- the truck driver who moved all of our stuff by himself. Before he left, the driver said he'd be at our new place (across the country) in 3-4 days. We were told by AVL that delivery takes between 8-10 days. We weren't planning on being at our new place that soon. When we asked AVL what happens if they try to deliver early before we're able to be there, they said they'd charge us $2800 and put our stuff in storage until the next driver could come, which would likely be several weeks. We had to make emergency and costly arrangements to get there earlier than anticipated. Again, they delivered one full day earlier than what AVL stated the date would be. No communication from AVL about this, they had no clue. It's as if they were trying to make sure we weren't there so they could charge us the storage fee. Our assigned moving coordinator, Claudia, was useless. Never contacted us with important info, widely inaccessible, totally clueless about what was going on. When we reported our issues to her, she had no idea that they had breached their contract by picking up a full day early, and she was defensive, cold, and rude. We were ultimately offered only $150 for their wrongdoing, but it came with a contract we'd have to sign that states we couldn't write bad reviews about them. I'd rather widely share the truth about this PREDATORY, EXPLOITATIVE, AND INCOMPETENT company than accept their hush money. read more

**UPDATE American Van Lines** We are now six months since the horrific move across country. After my previous Yelp review was posted (see below) an AVL customer service manager contacted us and offered a small stipend in hopes we would feel compensated for the horrific experience. At that time we suffered a death of a family member and couldn't deal with the problems caused by AVL and Cal Van Lines. Subsequently, I did contact the representative to discuss the stipend but to no avail. He said he would have the claims department contact me. "Crickets"....nobody has called or emailed. The claims form is literally meaningless. The photos detail just some of the breakage and damage. I will be submitting a complaint to the BBB, US Department of Transportation (USDOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and Public Utilities Commission. Advice : NEVER use American Van Lines or Cal Van Lines if you value your possessions and your sanity. read more

Horrible experience with this company. Arranged a move two months in advance. Paid my deposit. A few weeks before the move I called them to verify. I was told all was good and they would be there within the 3 day window they supplied me with. I would get a call in a few days with exact dates and time. After a few calls, I was given a day and time. It was day 3 of the window. I had to be out of our place by the end of that day. The day before I received and email at 5:30pm stating they would not be able to make the move and to call them for more information. I'd think that deserves a phone call. It's now 5:30 the day before we have to be out. Called them numerous times and they were unable to provide services they stated in their contract. I ended up renting a truck to get the items out of our home the next day. Moving is stressful enough. Add a situation like this and it's even more stressful. We ended up driving the truck 1300 miles to our new home and unloading it ourselves. My experience with American Van Lines was not positive at all. They did refund my deposit. read more

My main issue with the company was the lack of communication and their incompetence with scheduling the move. Once my move was a couple of days from being late I started a weeks long attempt at getting some status on my delivery. Customer service would answer and couldn't really be helpful, they would forward my call to my move representative and the call would go to voicemail or just disconnect. Left many messages and emails never getting a call back. I was only able to get a reply once my move had exceeded the maximum delivery date. At that point I was told my belongings hadn't even left the starting location. I was given a potential delivery date of Thursday or Friday and then proceeded to continue to adjust to Saturday and then Sunday. Got a call from drivers indicating they had arrived, unfortunately it was nearby but the wrong location, yet more miscommunication. They rescheduled for Monday now due to the fact that my new apartments would not be compatible with the big rig, a fact that I had indicated at the start. Finally delivery day came, scheduled for 10-11am and a single person to unload showed up at 12:15pm. Because it was only one person the job took more than two hours for a single bedroom. read more

BUYER BEWARE-Caveat Emptor!!!!! I am in the process of obtaining moving bids and researching companies, including companies that are highly rated by companies like Forbes and Consumer Services etc. I've tried to stay away from online sources which can be manipulated. I've also tried to be realistic that some forums elicit more complaints than higher ratings, i.e. Yelp and BBB. I contacted American and received a bid. They have an A+ BBB rating and appear to respond to complaints, as well as resolve them. Yelp rating is a 2 star and over 400 reviews. I closely examined many of the comments and/or complaints to separate the wheat from the chaff and came up with a series of questions arising from this review and my need for clarifications of some of the items in the bid. I e-mailed the questions to the "advisor" and requested a written response. She said she couldn't respond to my e-mail for "security reasons" and I should call her. I then suggested that she review the questions and respond by text AND that I needed a written response. She refused to provide any written response and "unsubscribed" me from her texts. ANY business which will not answer your simple questions regarding their bid in writing should be avoided at all costs. An explanation- If their responses are verbal and not reduced to a writing, they can deny them. And, an e-mail response, as well as a text response, is considered a writing for contractual purposes. This advice is for all movers. To use a barn yard metaphor--watch where you step or else your shoes will be covered in manure. Good Luck read more

Don't Let THIS Happen to You! AVL will give you a low-ball "Binding Estimate", but on move day, they will void the contract and come up with a NEW price. Keep reading for details. So, my mother was working directly with a sales person for months at AVL (James Coleman) and he instructed her to send him a list of items in the home. She asked him if he was planning to send an estimator to do a walkthrough in the house and he said that "they don't do that". She asked if he wanted photos sent and he said "not necessary". So she sent a list of the big items in the home, mostly furniture , and he said this was sufficient and gave her a quote. He explained that the Binding Estimate is the final price, it would not change with weight. We were locked in. So we thought. Moving week arrived and we were given a 3-day window when we should expect the truck to arrive. It never did. It's very difficult to get ahold of anybody who can actually help you at AVL but we finally spoke to Rita who manages the dispatch. Rita explained that they didn't have a truck and the NEW date is two days from now. We were selling the home so now in violation of escrow but luckily worked with the agent and buyer to give us two more days. Rita also promised a $100 credit per "day late" but of course we were never given that credit. We thought the worst was over but not even close. Moving day arrived and the truck was on time. The moving manager spent two hours walking through the home writing a detailed list of every small item in the home. He said that he was going to send this list to AVL and they would send us a "revised estimate". Really? What happened to our BINDING guarantee? Liz Edgar called from AVL and (surprise surprise) has a NEW PRICE due to all the small items they failed to ask for during the initial bid. Things like a coffee maker, dishes, a small box fan, garden tools... just things you would expect a home to have. We were NEVER told that they needed this level of detail. So, here we are, already past the escrow date and we absolutely have to be moved today, and Liz gives us a price that is MORE THAN DOUBLE the original "binding estimate". After quite a bit of arguing Liz stated that "We can honor the original binding contract but we will only move the items listed on that contract. But if you want everything moved, you have to sign the new (double price) contract. Choice is yours." And that's the scam. They had us up against the wall, with really no choice but to accept this new price, which could be anything they want. In my opinion, AVL has very suspect business practices. I can't say for sure that AVL planned this all along, or that they never intended to honor the original contract, but that's how it seems to me. James could be incredibly incompetent, or just very crafty. He's a sales guy who landed a contract and ended up doubling his sales on moving day. Worked out great for James while they emptied out my mother's savings account. I wish there was a law that protected consumers when they are at their most vulnerable. I could never recommend this company. The entire moving experience was an absolute nightmare and cost us a fortune. Their office is closed on a Monday? "Ashley" informed me in a text that their office was closed on Monday. I asked them to call me after 12:30 the next day and I get several calls and voice mails and two texts from Ashley between 12:30-1:00 asking me why I wasn't available for our "scheduled" phone call?? I answered their call and was forwarded to someone who asked why I called? Seriously? I should have terminated the call right there. Instead I talked to "Kyle" who insisted on knowing what I needed moving, the sizes of everything even though I wasn't on the property and told him so AND that I wasn't going to be at the property for a few weeks AND that the move wasn't going to be until April. I also told Kyle that I was talking to two other moving companies and then I would be back in touch with him after the new year. Three days and 30 emails later, most of which were demands to know why I haven't signed my contract and why I haven't responded to them. I'm done with this company. Rude and high pressure sales tactics cost them my business. A glitch? I wrote an email responding to Kyle and didn't hear back. read more

Please, save yourself the heartache and stress and pick another company for your move. We have done a number of long distance moves over the years. We have worked with a number of companies and none of them were perfect, but they could accomplish the job they were hired to do. Move our belongings from one location to another with minimal damage... this was not the case for American Van Lines. We received a quote in January 2024 for a move in June. The price sounded fantastic so we put a 50% deposit down. Our move date approached, everything was moving according to plan. We provided an updated inventory and our price increased ~$4000 from the initial quote. Not a biggie, more items more money. Got it. The day before the move they let us know that our storage area couldn't be accessed by the moving truck. Add another $1400 for a shuttle. Still, no problem. The day of the move the driver was 3 hours late, so the movers couldn't finish loading the truck the same day. Again, not a biggie, we adjusted our hotels stay and lost a few hundred on hotels to make it work. THE SECOND DAY OF LOADING THE DRIVER TOLD US HE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR ALL OUR BELONGINGS. This was a problem. We were moving 1100 miles to another state and have work obligations. When I contacted my move coordinator the answer was: "You must not have estimated properly. We can send another truck at the end of the month and it will be at your cost." This told me that AMERICAN VAN LINES SOLVES PROBLEMS USING YOUR TIME AND MONEY AND CANNOT SOLVE PROBLEMS THAT THEY CREATE. The last thing we wanted was to pay American Van Lines more money after they put us in a terrible spot. Of all the moves and movers we have used this has never happened before. Ever. Not once. To solve this problem I am flying back to our original state, renting a U-Haul and driving it 1100 miles back. In the meantime, we were left without dishes, parts of our kids beds and clothing because it was such a mess. AFTER MISSED WORK, EXTRA RENTALS AND INCREASED EXPENSES FROM AMERICAN VAN LINES OUR ORIGINAL QUOTE COST US TRIPLE THE MONEY. This company comes right up against bait and switch, but can get away with it because you are the estimator. You are responsible, it is up to you to make sure every pillow in your house is counted. Please don't repeat our mistake. Find another company that can complete the task for which they were hired and won't put you and your family through a moving horror story. read more

DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR HOME. American Van Lines talks a good game, with their website showing photos of their fleet of trucks with their logo and smiling employees in crisp polo shirts. They boast of "Certified packing experts to ensure your belongings are always safely packed and stowed away." What they DON'T mention is that they will subcontract to a third party to move your goods. In our case it was a company called "Move For Less," and our team of "experts" consisted of a guy in a leased, unmarked box truck and two day laborers he had picked up that day and had never worked with before. Their "moving skills" consisted solely of the ability to move boxes from Point A to Point B. They: * Did not have paper or plastic to protect our new carpet and hardwood floors * Balked at wearing masks and eventually discarded them, putting myself and my wife at risk * Refused to wear shoe covers our neighbor offered them At the origin end, Move For Less didn't not label any of the boxes. As a result, we had no idea what was inside each box. The guys at the delivery end therefore haphazardly stacked everything from floor to ceiling at random. Our sofa was left standing on end. Due to their lack of moving experience and incompetence, they put a six foot groove in our hardwood floors. I am 63 years old and my wife is 68. We both have lower back conditions, and are limited in heavy lifting. We now have to hire a reputable local moving company to sort out this mess. As of this writing, we've opened roughly 25% of the boxes to find that the "expert packers" dumped shoes at the bottom of wardrobe boxes. They used the wardrobe boxes for cheap T-shirts, yet crammed our very expensive suit coats and leather jackets into a small box along with steel pans! As a result, all of our fine dress coats are a wrinkled mess. The real nightmare is that with 75% of the boxes remaining to be unpacked, what hidden damages are waiting to be discovered?? This is NOThow we expected to be treated for spending $10,000 on a move. UPDATE: We attempted to speak with a company representative and record the call for accuracy. They refused, became argumentative and accused us of posting inaccurate information. We immediately terminated the conversation. read more

At this point, don't trust any mover unless you are going to follow them in your vehicle, use a container company instead. Every single electronic box I had "fell off the truck" and have never been seen again. Unfortunately, you may not recover even if you buy their cheapest $1000 protection plan. In my case $1000 worth of stuff came up missing so I would have lost $1k one way or another. If you don't have at least the $1000 plan, you get .60cents per pound reimbursement! Imagine that. Your $600 device that only weighs 30 pounds? You get $18 IF they grant your claim. If you see Buddy, the truck driver from Ft. Lauderdale, tell him and his cousin with the Island Accent that I want my stuff back! read more

They are a moving broker who will purposely under report how much your costs will be to get your business. This company cannot be trusted as their website and social media is filled with fake positive review. They are also only 1 year old and feature many complaints with the DOT. I suspect they changed their name recently to get away from complaints submitted to the DOT. They will over charge you regardless of what they say about a binding estimate The company has held a discount over my head since this review.
