Speaking of orthodontia and San Francisco's 450 Sutter Building (Sutter Street Grill review, 8/11/14), getting me to set foot in an art gallery is like pulling teeth, but not so at American Visions Art Gallery on Folsom's Sutter Street. The window display beckoned with a framed print, a variation of that timeworn dogs-playing-poker scene, except it was Republican presidents. Also available was a similar print featuring Democrat presidents and the current incumbent playing poker, and another showing them playing pocket billiards. The deeper you venture into the store, the more you might appreciate it as a must-shop for those seeking to adorn a (pardon the triteness) man cave. Also for sale are sculptures created by Tom Warren from unlikely materials such as random surplus hardware, household flatware, and heads of golf clubs welded together. An introductory card amid his display tells of Warren's 30 years of welding and shaping metal to design components for the aerospace industry. He began his art career after retiring "as a means to teach two of his granddaughters...how to MIG [metal inert gas] weld," and he lives in [nearby] El Dorado Hills, reads the card. Among his most remarkable pieces are a metal-and-spark-plug man walking a pet dinosaur fashioned mostly from a scrap bike chain; a bodice made entirely of identical flat washers, and a backyard cookout scene. Take a moment to view the pix (and [please] VOTE!). I might not know art, but I know what I like when I see it.

    Inside the store

Rows of pop vinyls, if you're looking for one they probably have it!! Will def recommend this place to all my pop fans/collectors.

We barely even had time to look around before we were greeted by Tony, who introduced himself, and explained that "YNOT" was his name spelled backwards. We quickly got to chatting, and he explained that he didn't even start painting until his 70s, which was really only just a few years ago. This was hard to believe, because the art was so stunning, detailed, and imaginative. It looked like the work of someone who had been painting religiously for decades. He explained the stories behind a few of his paintings, and showed us one that he had painted for Alex Honnold. "Do you know who Alex Honnold is?" He asked. "I do, actually," I said. "No," said my daughter. And so Tony explained who Alex Honnold is. I added that I had seen him a few years ago, when I was on my way up to Half Dome. Apparently, Tony was so inspired by Alex that he decided to create a painting of Half Dome to give to him. He explained that he would be sending the artwork to Alex's mother soon. I didn't take a picture of it, but it was fantastic. Prices are relatively affordable, with many pieces under $200. For anyone out there looking for a last minute Mother's Day gift, here is another idea from me. You're welcome. While the shop is small, it is packed with artwork. The store is located in the back of the business alley behind Candle Bar and American Barber Shop. A large selection of Tony's artwork is available to view on his website at https://ynotartstudio.com/gallery/

You cannot get up close and personal with them like you can in Sweden, but we know why this is and why we cannot have nice things. The museum has kindly set up visual maps that help visitors make out the glyphs along the nicely maintained nature trail. If you are visiting in summer please stay hydrated as the trail is only partially shaded. It's about a 1.5 mile loop, but there's a longer bike trail that it is connected to. All is well-marked. $7 admission will get you access to the walking trail (there's probably a way for local cyclists to access the trail without paying but idk man, I'm from out of town.) and the museum, which does have restrooms and a water fountain inside. My friend and I enjoyed the museum and art exhibits indoors, then our nice nature walk outside to view the petroglyphs, mortars, and grinding rocks. We saw raptors, turkeys, lizards, turtles, deer, rabbits, and probably other creatures I am forgetting by now. Definitely stay on the trail as there are these lovely things called ground hornets (stingers up) we were warned about by the friendly staff. The weather was blessedly fair for July (Pocki brought Swedish summer over here and then left with it when she went back home) so we only had to suffer high 80s on the trail. I highly recommend visiting with walking shoes and water bottles. We spent a good two hours here. One could bring a picnic as there are benches outside, but we didn't bring more than a few snacks. Parking is available wherever you can find it along the suburban street. There is not a dedicated lot, but there are a few disabled parking spaces in the front. Hours: Monday: Closed Tuesday - Sunday: 9AM-4PM
