My issue at first was that I could not find one that really seemed to take pride in the discipline. In other words, A lot of the places around here just want money and will have you sign long contracts and push "belts" at you. Saratoga Budo is not like that and I just pay monthly and train 3+ days a week. The other aspect I like is that this school is small, so we are all able to get training from a 3rd degree black belt, which does help our progression move along quickly. About the instructor: Sensei JP is extremely patient and understanding. I have been training with him for about a a year and I must say, it has been the best decision of my life. I have learned so much from him and his teaching style helps me strive to become the best. I have learned how to become more confident while also learning how to improve my spiritually as well. I sometimes make mistakes with how I approach a "move" but he never makes me feel like an idiot for not mastering it right away and is always able and willing to help. His teaching stye leaves open the opportunity to "self-learn". He does not force you to do things a certain way and allows you to figure out alternate ways to do things. Coming here is the best part of my week and I find myself constantly thinking about how I can improve and what I can learn. If you are looking for a jujutsu school I would recommend Saratoga Budo to anyone. You have nothing to lose. If I wasnt in grad school and didnt work full time, I would probably train more than I do. Was in the area to visit family so dropped in with my kids for the kids classes (4-6 and 7-12 years…read moreold) and a beginner class for me. Had a great experience overall. The kids classes were great, my young one is athletic but a bit shy and he instantly felt welcomed and had a blast. There were a good number of kids and the class was great. I didn't catch my older son's class since the adult beginner class was at the same time, but there were lots of kids and my son said he enjoyed it and when we come visit he'd like to come back. He said he's going to bring back a couple games to our gym back at home. Beginner adult class was good. Coach was very welcoming, did a great job of giving context to a few different sweeps and movements. They did a good job of partnering low experience and higher experience folks together which was nice, nice people all the way around. The class after jumped right into rolling, so wish I had planned to stay for that. The facilities were really nice from what we saw/used. The gym was huge compared to others I've visited so plenty of space to stretch out and roll. I really appreciate all the folks I met and engaged with. From my first email asking if we could drop in, to the kids who were really nice to my kids and the coaches who were very welcoming; we would be joining up if we lived in upstate ny. Only bummer was they were out of kids size t-shirts to buy (because they're in high demand), but picked up some nice Secor bjj shorts for a memory and takehome for the kiddos (if that's the biggest negative, that says something).

There are no children's classes, adult classes only. Teens with sufficient maturity level may be allowed to join. Classes are informal by the standards of traditional Japanese martial arts. There is a relaxed atmosphere in which laughter is often heard, as well as the thud of bodies hitting the mat! Jesberger Sensei comes from Syracuse three days a week to teach classes. We are very lucky to have such an experienced and talented teacher to come to the Mohawk Valley to teach this beautiful martial art. Currently there are classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. and continuing until the last student leaves. Students arrive and depart as their schedules allow in this informal class setting. And there is a class on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. He has been so dedicated to the sport that he doesn't want to miss any training - very much proactive. As the result, he has excelled well and won gold medals in recent regional and national competitions. I have been trying to figure out the "hooks." First of all, the amazing coach. Lucas is the owner and instructor. He's Caucasian, but he knows Chinese martial arts no less than Chines athletes. He studied in China for a few years and is able to read the Kong Fu code book that most Chinese could not even comprehend. Above all, he knows how to teach. He motivates not pushing. He paces each student's progress based on individual readiness. He not only teaches moves, but ethics and discipline. My son constantly paraphrases the words Lucas uses, like "early is on-time, on-time is late, and late is unacceptable...""virtuosity is doing common things uncommonly well..." The training facility is new (a year and half) and tastefully decorated. The schedule is flexible and you can find proper time slots easier than many other schools. The students there are also amazing. My son is friend with almost every student; some of them are years older. In class, they help each other. After school, they are buddies. Considering after almost a year training at CMAA, my son is still so crazy about Wushu, Lucas must be doing something right!

A little over 2 yrs ago I applied again as I wanted a shower and swimming as I was tired of cleaning up in public bathrooms and my car needed repairs badly. So, 2023 Jan I was allowed at this Y/Fulton for 10$ a month. For 2 yrs I paid even though I had silver sneakers. In Jan 2025 I went to Wilton Y as I finally got a new vehicle and was denied entry due to Fulton County Y! I went to Fulton County Y and spoke to front desk where I was told had no membership anymore due to scholarship had to be re-newed yearly with new management. So, even though I had scholarship for 2 years there I was still banned from all Saratoga Y's! WAIT A MINUTE IF I AM SUCH A BAD PERSON WHY DID I HAVE MEMBERSHIP AT FULTON COUNTY Y FOR YRS AFTER THE E-MAILS? AND THAT MANAGER IS LONG GONE??? New management is horrible and is running the place to the ground. Staff turnover is awful, employees are always unhappy, it's just a mess. Pool is never open, hot tub is always closed 99.8% of the time, equipment is always dirty and broken. Sad, poor excuse for a YMCA. It used to be one of the best places for kids and adults. but not anymore.
