We were skeptical about staying at another America's Best Value Inn, because our experience at one in Chattanooga was horrible (see http://www.yelp.com/biz/americas-best-value-inn-and-suites-chattanooga#hrid:L-x7YX6f7dHAzZxmJCTs-w/src:self). However, the revues on Priceline.com were good enough to entice us to at least stop and check out the rooms. We were pleasantly surprised. While nothing to look at on the outside, the inside was very nice, and had some really nice amenities for a typical motel (refrigerator, microwave, safe, very fast and easy to use wifi, and a barcalounger). The room was clean, smelled fresh and seemed to be recently remodeled. Here's a tip: When trying to use the shower, the shower lever is actually the rim around the tub spigot, not the lever on the shower head. It took us a bit to figure that out. Overall, a great experience. The staff were very friendly, too. We'll be back on our next trip through Hays. But, a cautionary note, with America's Best Value Inn, it's a gamble. Each one is independently-owned, so there's no telling what you'll find. We suggest asking them to let you see the rooms first, before checking in. read more

It was cheap and available when nobody else in town had vacancies. This is a classic roadside motel right out of the 70s. The amenities are clean but dated. In one room, some of the mis-matched towels look at least 30 years old. I took a non-smoking room, but it smelled like it was a smoking room they tried to clean. And the bathroom is so tiny that my shoulders were wedged against the wall to sit on the toilet. Not what I was looking for, but clean and the WiFi worked. read more

We stayed in Hays, KS on Friday night, 8/6/10. We've found that most hotels that are off of the interstate in small towns charge over $100 a night, and that they're seldom the greatest quality. So, when we checked in to ABVI, we were not expecting much, especially considering the price of the room was the lowest I've seen in a long time. The location seemed a little scary, but for the price, we would deal with it. Let me tell you, I could not have been more surprised. The room was immaculate and smelled good. The temperature was perfect. The beds were really comfortable. A larger, firmer pillow would have been nice, but that's the ONLY complain I can come up with. The shower was great, and actually had water pressure that felt like I was getting clean. Most hotels have very little water pressure these days. The hot tub area was amazing. I wasn't even expecting a pool, but to find not only a clean one, but the wonderful hot tub building did my spirit good! To top it all off, we discovered that the clerk had given us a small discount since we'd arrived so late at night. We will definitely be staying there the next time we travel through, and I'll absolutely be recommending this location to all of my friends! read more

This place is sketchy. So, so sketchy. My girlfriend and I were incredibly uncomfortable the entire time we stayed here - partly because they put us in the furthest back, smallest, darkest building on the lot. We requested a location nearer the lights and office, but - even though the place appeared mostly deserted except for some questionable folks hanging out on the rails all day - management refused. That should have been our first clue. We booked through priceline and, upon checkin, management didn't have us sign anything, fill out anything, and they didn't give us any hotel information beyond what we received in our priceline email. That should have been our second clue. Finally, when we arrived in our room, it was like something out of a horror movie. The stairs leading up to it were dark, crumbling, and littered with broken furniture. The door had dark red rust splotches all over it, and was installed in a weird way so that the lock would be useless (you could open it about 8" with the lock on, enough to slip your hand in and unlock it yourself). The curtains had a curious pattern of holes and red splotches - blood? We tried not to think about it. The AC didn't work, but emitted an awful grinding sound, and the bathroom light/fan combination squealed incessantly, a violent metallic sound. We ended up using our phone flashlights to light the bathroom to avoid it. We received a confirmation email on booking that told us to check out by 1pm - which was, basically, the only good thing we'd learned about this motel. That's a late-enough checkout time for us to sleep in after 7 hours of driving the day before! The next morning, we had housekeeping bang on our door at 11, and we shouted "come back later" several times as they kept banging. Eventually they heard us, I guess, and left. Shortly after, housekeeping came banging again. They opened the door - it was locked, but as I said, you could still open it - and we tried to cover ourselves while shouting "come back later!" Then, the phone rang, I answered it - bewildered at all the attention - and the person on the other end asked, "will you be checking out today?" "Yes!" "Okay." And then hung up. Shrugging, I got back in bed, only to be woken up again twenty minutes later by more banging. My girlfriend picked up the next phone call - the manager. "Why haven't you left yet?" "...because we have another hour until checkout?" "Checkout was at 11." "Well - what? I have an email right here that clearly says 1pm." (we double checked. Yep, 1pm) "Get out of the room." "You just woke us up, we'll be out as soon as we can but we still need to pack." "If you don't leave the room, I'm calling the police." "Why would you call the police? There was no way for us to know that your email was incorrect." "There are placards in the room." (we looked around) "No... there aren't." "There are placards in the room. I'm calling the police." Yep - our very first interaction with the manager was trying to figure out why he would call the police on a couple to whom he'd sent an inaccurate email, who were packing up to leave after his threats. He never did, but when we went to the office to talk to him he refused to give us his name. When we asked him how we should have known that his email was inaccurate, he said we should have read about checkout. We asked him to show us where, in the office or in our room, there was any notice of the checkout time - and he couldn't find one. He showed us a receipt from another customer, sitting on his printer, that said 11 (is this even legal, showing us another customer's personal information?). We pointed out that we had never gotten such a receipt, and he said, "of course not, you booked through a third party." I was furious at this treatment, but Amanda made me leave. He wasn't worth our time arguing. But how could they not see how ridiculous they were being? Anyway, we're permanent travelers. We both work remotely for SF-based startups and don't have an apartment - we live in hotels, motels, airbnb's, etc. In all of this time, we've never had a hostile experience with a property owner until our stay in Hays, Kansas. Never again will we make the mistake of booking with an America's Best Value Inn. There's a Motel 6 just down the street. It's a few dollars cheaper and we've never had a bad experience with any of the dozens at which we've stayed. If you want cheap and clean, that's a much safer bet. read more

Pulled off the highway and found this place. It was great for what it had. I think I paid $60. If you need to sleep in Hays (which isn't awesome but I've seen worse places), and don't need room service and a buffet, I would recommend this place. My room was in one of three strips of units, which seemed to be the oldest. It might have been a smoking room a few years ago because the smell sting hung around, but it wasn't oppressive (and I am sensitive to smoke). It was clean though. The friendly front desk woman gave me a choice based on availability- ground floor in the older unit, or second floor in one of the newer ones in back. I chose the ground floor. She warned me that the heaters aren't controllable in these units, but there was a ballsy space heater to supplement if it wasn't enough. I had no trouble with the room temperature. The sink and "powder" area is huge. The bathroom is standard motel fare, but clean. The bed was amazing. There was also a big flat screen and lots of weird extras in the closet like a fly swatter and ironing board. Fridge, micro, and coffeemaker all there. I slept really well on the king sized bed despite road noise (which every motel suffers from on the Hays strip). It looks slightly sketchy from the street. I talked to the woman at the desk and she assured me that nothing bad ever really goes down here. I am driving from Portland, OR to NYC and I needed that assurance because my car contains everything I own at the moment. Good customer service. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but this one needed more balance given what other people wrote. I just want to make sure that customers know what they are getting into before booking this hotel. This place was sketchy!!! I booked it thinking that it was more of a hotel than a motel (I guess I've never stayed at an Americas Best Value before), but this was a motel all the way. I had a room in the very back of the complex. When I got to the area, there was a huge pick up truck with its interior lights on blocking the road. It could have easily pulled into one of the various parking spots, but it decided to block the road and leave its lights on??? And it stayed there for over an hour. What would someone need to be doing for over an hour with no concern for other people trying to get around?? This freaked me out from the start. Walking into the room, I knew that I had seen the set up before, in every B movie where some broke kid or someone on the run from the law or the mob has to stay in a dirt cheap motel (and probably gets stabbed or shot there). I guess that I wouldn't have minded all of this if I knew what I was getting into (if some of the other reviews had described what an Americas Best Value motel was like), but I paid $78 for one night after taxes. I spent the whole night wishing that I had spent 20 bucks more to feel safer in a hotel down the street. This place did have some pluses: free HBO, free Wi-fi internet, a microwave and fridge (but was I really going to use this when I'm only staying for one night?). And I guess I don't have any physical reasons to dislike this place (it was clean enough, no obvious stains or large bugs), but I had just stayed at the Hampton Inn the night before so I guess I was expecting a lot more. When all you need is a decent bed and a clean room this place cannot be beat for the price. I needed two rooms and requested to see if they had adjoining rooms. Emilie, the desk attendant, was very helpful and looked to see what she could do. We arrived late and the rooms were ready. Rooms were nice and clean. Don't spend twice the amount for the same thing with the only difference is a flat screen instead of a standard CRT TV. read more

I have stayed in a lot worse for a lot more money! Everything you need for a nights stay while we were driving from Dallas to Denver. The bed was comfortable and the room clean. As many have said in other comments before.... this is an older place and there are stains and wear and tear. It is Pet friendly and the front desk was helpful and friendly. If I needed to land for another night I would stay here again. The price is right! read more

I stayed here recently and I have to say, the lady at the front desk was very nice and helpful. The room was nice and clean. It just so happened the guest next to me were Kansas trailer trash and they felt compelled to stand outside my door and gab at 10 o'clock. I traveled all day and wanted some pease and quite. I asked them to go somewhere else and gab. I think they got the point when they saw me wearing my .40 cal Smith & Wesson. read more

I gave this place 5 because it truly was best value for the money. Non smoking, queen room, ground floor, at the door parking. With tax the room was 62$. Outside nothing fancy. Room had frig, microwave, recliner chair, iron and full size board, hair dryer, desk, cable with hbo, wifi, room darkening curtains, 2 flyswatters, but only one fly. (I missed but never saw him again). My husband loved the recliner but I loved the little fitness area with 2 hot tubs , benches, chairs, drinking fountain, emergency phone, dressing areas with showers, and restrooms. We enjoyed the Italian place next door which seemed to have new owners. Not overly fancy but reasonable price, fast and friendly service. I had chicken picatta and he had a small pizza. Used the room microwave to warm our leftovers later. Bathroom is small but has adjoined sink, dressing area with full length mirror. CON- no breakfast? So what more do you want for 60 bucks? Usually I am very leery of America's Best Value Inn, but one of the reviews indicated that it used to be a Best Western until the same owner family built a new Best Western in town and renamed this one. I am happy to report that it was a very pleasant stay. The room was very clean, and the WiFi was excellent! Having a mini fridge and microwave was a plus. One reviewer mentioned the tiny bathroom. While the bathtub was spacious and there was plenty of hot water, they were correct in the sense that the space while sitting on the toilet is very cramped -- your arm rubs against the toilet paper dispenser which is annoying. The recliner next to the bed was very comfortable, and I enjoyed using it while working on my computer, relaxing after a long hard day's drive! The room was somewhat warm, and I didn't quite figure out the old heating/cooling unit, so I just opened the window a bit. This place is great for travelers just passing through as the price was reasonable. I don't recommend the Napoli Italian restaurant next door, though! read more
