Our Master Agility Champion female miniature poodle ruptured her ACL in 2015, not from agility but from jumping into the car at a bad angle. Our agility friends convinced us that surgery was the way to go. We found Amherst Small Animal Hospital and Dr. Stein through the internet looking for a place that did acupuncture and laser therapy as well as rehabilitation. Dr. Stein did the surgery followed by acupuncture and laser treatments and rehabilitation that included an underwater tread mill. We talked about stem cell therapy but decided against it because of the expense and she seemed to be doing very well in her recovery. She was near the end of her rehab when she blasted out the door one morning, chasing after a squirrel and ruptured her other ACL. We had been told that this was a very high probability, but hoped we had dodged that bullet. This time we immediately got in touch with Dr. Stein and she was in surgery the next day. We set her up for the same treatment plan, but after much thought and discussion we decided to go ahead with the stem cell therapy this time. She could have both knees injected at the same time with one harvest of cells. I am a skeptic and want to see the scientific proof when making decisions about new procedures. Within a few days of the injection, I could see a difference in her legs. Her legs were stronger and she moved freely. I couldn't believe it and so soon. I don't think dogs are susceptible to the placebo effect. I could visually see the effect of the stem cell cells. She is nearing the end of her rehabilitation and she is a bouncy, happy little girl enjoying her life with no signs of lameness or pain. If I were a dog...this is where I would want to go! And if I were a dog in pain...this is where I would ABSOLUTELY NEED to go! From the first moment I called here to make an appointment for my dog...his life changed for the better. I have an 8 year old Bernese/Golden boy who desperately needed help. He developed a rear leg limp in December which progressively got so bad it was throwing his entire body out of whack and he was unable to even go for a short walk. As a nurse, I was desperate to find the root cause of the limp/pain/debilitation. I was referred here because, at my wits end, I wanted pain management. First call...a "help me up harness" was recommended by their staff...and what...I could go get it from them that day. The harness was an absolute life saver. It allowed me to support the rear while walking. The pain management appointment was truly amazing. Within the first 5 minutes of the appointment I realized that I was in the presence of a vet who was so "cutting edge" with his pharmacological management of pain that I seriously wanted to jump up and down. Let me just say that within a week, there was barely a limp thanks to the brilliance of Dr.Stein. And.......root cause....a ruined ACL! So, surgery...recovery/rehab...and I now have an 8 year old boy with NO limp. The staff are truly amazing...kind (which is so truly important), informative, helpful, humorous....I do believe that I have finally found the God and Godesses of the animal kingdom... I get emotional just trying to write this review. Dr. Stein and his kind and compassionate staff at Amherst Small Animal Hospital and Animal Pain Management Center have gone above and beyond to help my sweet kitty. She is terminally ill with a tumor above her eye and his expertise with pain management has given my girl quality of life that she would otherwise not have. The staff there are always a phone call away to give you advice and always schedule you promptly. They call and check on you when they say they will. When I first called to make an appointment, Dr Stein squeezed my girl in for a consultation when he was getting ready to go on vacation and ended up spending over 2 1/2 hours examing her and giving me options. I was blown away by his gentleness and genuine love for animals. Even when I couldn't afford a treatment that he felt would enhance her quality of life, he and the staff made it happen. I can't thank them enough, she had her treatment today and is doing amazing! It's the smallest things that I appreciate most about this treatment. She sat on the front porch with me this evening, taking in the fresh air with a look of complete contentment on her face. That just melted my heart. Thank you all again for all you have done for us! The veterinary, PT, and office staff at ASAH are among the best, kindest, most devoted, professional and awesome people I've ever met. They are absolutely responsible for saving my dog's life by provided stunning surgical support and advanced treatment for degenerative myelopathy. My dog was a rescue, very scared and shy, and everyone at ASAH treated her so kindly and wonderfully; after a very short while, she blossomed under their care. 5.0 star rating 2/14/2019 I switched here from my prior vet, who was very reasonably priced, b/c I had my dog in three times w/in a few weeks w/various symptoms and I even suggested an xray (not done). I knew something was wrong, took the dog to Dr. Stein thinking pain might be reason for lameness, it was he who found a massive tumor, I had to euthanize my best dog ever the next day. I was very impressed w/ the kindness and knowledge of the staff, including front desk. Perhaps the criticism I've read has more to do w/ personalities that are efficient, matter-of-fact and blunt, as opposed to "rude." Granted they are higher priced, but ultimately you must determine what services you are able to budget for, I'm sure ASAH would help you prioritize. read more

I absolutely love Dr.Stein and the ASAH staff! They are always so nice and have brainstormed a few times when my dog had a unknown parasite where she almost died, AND when my older dog had pneumonia, again when he wasn't doing well. They got all the help and support we needed to make sure they got better. They helped me with so much with the smart route to go when my first dog was ill with a brain tumor and had to make the choice of putting her down and they treated us like family. If it wasn't for Dr. Stein & the staff at Amherst Small Animal Hospital our German Shepherd would not be alive. She is happy, healthy and thriving animal today thanks to Dr Stein. Over the past years we had taken her to three different veterinarians. Not one of them diagnosed her condition.
