Located on 3rd St near the music hall of the university, this restaurant offers sushi and Pacific rim foods. Although they have patio seating with umbrellas, I chose to sit on the interior on the main floor. (Additional seating is downstairs in the basement of the restaurant, but not open unless needed.) Although there was a slight delay in getting seated, once I was taken to my table, the entire meal progressed quickly. I ordered the Bulgogi (Beef in a sweet sauce with onions). The entree comes with a side of miso soup (quite tasty with a just enough salt to enhance the flavor), a small side salad (with ginger dressing), and about a cup of white sticky rice. Since chopsticks are provided with the meal, I really appreciated that the rice stayed together making it easier for me to hold onto. The salad also was prepared to also be handled easily with the same tool. The Bulgogi, though a little overcooked, had really pleasing flavor. The onions, carrots, and green onions paired well with the beef and the rice. The serving size was perfect for lunch. The service was pleasant and efficient bringing a water refill, clearing the emptied dishes and bringing out the check for payment. My late lunch hour dining took less than a half hour. My only negative is that the condition of the restaurant's interior was well worn and in need of attention. The carpet was beyond cleaning and one of the walls needed repair. The men's restroom, located in the basement, required descending a stairway that was in some state of construction/repair. Came in on a Tuesday night with my wife only to be pleasantly surprised with the fact that sushi rolls are 30% off on Tuesdays. Do not know if this is a regular thing, or how long it will last, but it was quite nice. We ordered the regular salmon and tuna maki rolls, Philadelphia roll, Boston roll, and the spicy salmon roll. It's a decent sushi. The fish tasted fresh, it was flavourful overall. Your typical mid-range sushi if you're in a major city. For Bloomington, top of the range. This is my favorite sushi place in Bloomington, and I've tried all of them here! Ami has the freshest sushi with the best taste. They have great weekly specials, and 30% off of sushi on Tuesdays is always a popular time to visit. They also started doing an all you can eat sushi deal for about $20 which is awesome when you think about how good the quality is of their Sushi here. It's usually crowded and parking is limited. All of their food is really good but their Sushi is really where it's at! The interior of the restaurant is really nice and comfortable. It has low lighting and a relaxed atmosphere. The staff has always been friendly and attentive when we dine there. We just love this place! It is more expensive than other sushi places in the area, but when we want to really eat some good sushi we always head to Ami. It's worth the price! read more

Super quick and friendly Sushi Restaurant. Plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans. The miso soup was super delicious, but I mean how can you mess up miso soup?! The miso soup was included with the purchase of a roll, as well as salad. Servers were helpful in answering questions. Priced very reasonably! I ordered the Futomaki Maki Roll (loaded with lots of vegetables) and Shitake Maki Roll (mushroom). Both of which are made vegan. The Futomaki Maki Roll was definitely high up on my list of veggie rolls I've had. It was very flavorful and substantial. This roll is very colorful as well. A lot of times vegetable sushi rolls aren't taken as 'seriously' as fish rolls are, but this roll was! The Shitake Maki Roll was good too, but not as good as the Futomaki Maki Roll. I love mushrooms and the mushrooms tasted delicious, however, this Roll could have been made more unique with something else in it, maybe mango!!! Had to try this restaurant on my daughter's request while visiting. The restaurant is bigger inside than it appears on the outside. The kitchen on the upper level is open. The menu is large with many Japanese and Korean offerings including sushi, sashimi, rice bowls, tempura plus other Asian dishes. The table and décor are older and somewhat rundown but not gross or dangerous. Service throughout the meal was exceptional. Our drink glasses never were completely empty. I had the half of the Spicy Crazys roll and Katsu Don. The roll was good but I wouldn't call it spicy. The pork cutlet on the Katsu Don had a soggy coating and the egg yolk was completely cooked. I needed soy sauce for additional flavor. I don't know that I'd order it again but the portion size was large. I also tried the vegetable fried rice which was very good and the teriyaki chicken (which must be offered for those less adventurous) which also had a very good taste. Dishes were obviously priced for a college city, very reasonable. The only true negative that I found was the downstairs bathroom which was pretty gross...college city. read more

Wow, wow, wow! I was SO impressed with this place. We can start with the private parking- a major plus. We were welcomed into a casual, yet warm atmosphere. Adequate seating and lit nicely with the addition of some gorgeous natural light streaming in from the large windows. The service was fast, attentive but not bothersome. The FOOD was indeed the star. My partner and I are both plant based and Ami provides interesting and tasty veggie rolls. We happened to come on a "half-prices roll" night! :) We also shared a veggie bowl which was served in a stone pot- also amazing. The veggies were fresh and they were accommodating to our special requests (we avoid fried food). This is a fantastic place we will be frequenting often! I came to Bloomington to have lunch with my daughter. I told her that we can go anywhere she wanted for lunch. She told me this was her favorite place to eat at so this is where we went. The staff was very friendly. They had watch a vegetarian / vegan options. I am a person who loves miso soup and theirs was probably the best I've had. The salad is really good as well and I actually managed to eat it with chopsticks. LOL the food is also good. I forgot to take pictures until I was done. This is a great little college town sushi place that won't break the bank. It's not super fancy. It's a great place to hang out with friends and drink some sake. I think this place and Sushi Bar have the best sushi in town, but I like the atmosphere at Ami better. Sushi Bar feels very abandoned and it's really dark. Get ready for a very college crowd at Ami, and watch your step. The Jacobs Music students will be there with their cellos and guitars sticking out into the walkways. Most meals come with miso soup and a little salad with ginger dressing. I like both the simple sushi rolls and the gluttonous, fried, gigantic type rolls. You can't go wrong either way. read more

After our terrible experience at Sushi Bar Tuesday, my friends and I still had a craving for sushi-- good sushi-- so we went to Ami's last night! There really is no comparison. The sushi is amazing on every level! The soup is much better, maybe a little salty, but the tofu was much better than what they put in the soup at Sushi Bar. And they make their own delicious ginger-based dressing for the salad. Plus, my hot tea was brought out hot, just as it should be. We split a couple of the chef's specialty rolls. I believe around the table we ordered the Mountain (a classic white fish tempura topped with crunchy crab meat, shrimp tempura served w/ a special sauce and a delicious potato crunch), the Lion King (smoked salmon and cream cheese with this amazing spicy sauce and the crunchy topping again), the Bond Girl, the "OMG" roll (spicy crab & avocado with whitefish, which they bring out flaming!), the Black Dragon (california with a whole unagi piece), and then some tempura for everyone. Amazing! All amazing! Thick pieces, with fresh fish, delicious sauces, and it was more than a feast! We were stuffed! Completely satisfied! The server was a girl that seems to always wait our tables, and she's always more than pleasant! We told her about our horrible time at the Sushi Bar and at the end, they brought us their desert, tempura ice cream... wow. Great ice-cream filled cake battered a fried with rainbow sprinkles and chocolate! Great food, great service, beautiful ambiance, and an overall unbeatable experience. Last night I went to Ami with a group of 8 friends, including myself. I was skeptical about eating raw seafood in the middle of the country, and suspicions turned out to be true. Not only did the 3 people that raw ate raw get sick, but also, those of us that ate fully cooked meals also threw up. 1/5 stars for 5/8 throwing up! Never go to this place they'll poison you. Leaving one star for the generous splitting of $40 into $5 bills. UPDATE : This might merely be a coincidence, but my friend who 'enjoyed' the sushi lovers special has contracted a throat infection within days of eating here. I thought this spot would be one of those College spots where they sell cheap sushi for high prices, especially since the tables are so close together it kind of makes it uncomfortable. I figured with all the college kids packed in wanting their sushi fix, I was going to be let down as a real sushi lover. Boy, was I wrong! You get free miso soup and house salad with your order, which was awesome! The quality of the Miso soup was great. It was on par with sushi restaurants where I pay $4 for it on the West Coast. The house salad was also really fresh, even the girls sitting within arm's reach of me at the table next to me were talking about how the salad is refreshing. I got the sweet potato roll and the OMG roll. I was thrown away by both roles. They didn't skimp on the plain roll, it was huge! And although I think the OMG roll could have had one more something inside, like asparagus or something, I still enjoyed it till every last piece was gone! read more

Basically our favorite sushi place in Bloomington. We go here ALL the time, and love it! Their Mountain Roll, Vienna, and Spicy Salmon are amazing, and rolls we get every time! The servers are always nice, and the quality of the sushi is great. The ONLY reason this is 4 stars instead of 5, is because they haven't updated their menu in about 5 or more years, and a lot of the items on the menu (that infuriatingly sounds good and we would like to order) are crossed off with a sharpie, and they haven't added in more items/options to replace the multitude of items that are inexplicably not available anymore. In specific, we've wanted to order the Sushi Lover for about 3 years now, which is a nice chef's special layout of a variety of Nigiri, and they have said for 3 years now that they don't offer it anymore, even though it's listed on the menu. There is no other platter or chef's choice options for Nigiri, so it's kind of frustrating, and I'm hoping since it's been so long since they've updated their menu that they will do so soon, so there's new options available to replace the many many items that are scratched out in sharpie now. read more

This restaurant was one of my favourites in town until we got poisend with their food once. I thought it's a coincidence (it was unbelievable), we visited them another time but both of us got poisend again. (Both times we had cooked sushi) After I told them about our sickness because of the food, they told me "sorry but I think it wasn't from our food because we taste the food before serving". I seriously love this place. In fact, I realized I had already eaten there twice in one week and was too embarrassed to go a third time! The miso and salad is complementary with any meal and both are quite good -- the ginger dressing for the salad is wonderful. The Sashimi rice, the Monday 30% off special, is amazing and the sushi, with a wide variety of rolls and prices (good especially if you're trying to keep it on the cheaper side) is also very good. Service has been consistently good -- warm, welcoming, and timely! My only complaint is that the interior, while masked with modern-ish decorations, is in need of some attention. If you like spicy tuna, try the Dragon Ball!! I've been to Ami several times and have always enjoyed myself. The service is consistently good, and the food is stellar. Today, thankfully, was no different. I decided to be adventurous and try the Dragon Ball, which looks like a manageable sized dish in the picture on the menu. This thing was HUGE! The spicy tuna in the middle could have been a bit spicier for my liking, but this dish was simply amazing. There was a sweet sauce drizzled over the wedges of the Dragon Ball and in the center was a nice little salad with a sriracha based dressing that more than compensated for the slight lack of spice in the tuna. At first I thought there might be too much rice, but it was just perfect. I will definitely order this again. I'd recommend it for someone who is hungry, but not so hungry as to order two different rolls. Trust me, I'm an eater and I couldn't finish this in addition to my other roll. I also ordered the Caterpillar roll which has cucumber and eel inside, with avocado and eel sauce outside. This was very good as well, but unfortunately paled in comparison to the Dragon Ball. Sushi is always best at the sushi bar but Ami is doing a great job during this COVID pandemic to keep the doors open by serving delivery or takeout. We used the delivery option and the food arrived in just under an hour. Everything was still fresh and at a good temp. I've been to Ami a couple of times. As far as midwestern sushi goes, I think it's a good option in Bloomington. If you request gluten free sou sauce they have it. There is an extensive menu, including cooked and raw rolls, simple and more hearty rolls. Also - there is an outdoor patio if you'd like to sit outside. read more

The rest of the week also has deals but only on specific items. The place is bigger than it looks. There is additional seating in the basement that actually looks newer than the main floor. They are always quick to seat me and take my order. They have good service and great ingredients. If your order is messed up or they make a mistake, they will fix it right away. We just revisited after moving back. We're looking for our sushi home. This probably is not it though. However, the salmon skin sushi was done correctly with crunchy skin. Spicy tuna roll was good. Hard to mess that up! I crave the Japanese salad dressing but only got maybe a half cup of salad in a serving. The gyoza were good. We had some mixed shrimp and veg tempura on a whim. It was fine. My husband got dolsot bibimbap and was a tad disappointed. No side banchan. The rice on the bottom did not get terribly crispy. I should say that this place has a fun location for people watching on this diverse campus. The service model is strange. We had like 5different people come to our table which is confusing. Has what seems to be traditional style decor, you can tell it is a older building once inside due to some details on the ceiling. ..The hostess was kind and so was our server. It was actually hard to distinguish who was the waiter , they worked as a team . We ordered gyoza for our app , they we're huge & deep fried with a citrusy sauce. The salad had this creamy pasty dressing also citrusy in flavor . I ordered the 007 roll , without avocado and it was yummy . I usually don't like rolls without a clean cut of fish directly on top . But I was surprised. This roll was made naked ( no rice on the outside) . I don't feel like you get as many rolls as most places , but they were larger in size . Overall it was good , but not impressive to me . My boyfriend got the bishya bih (or something like that ) it was served in large stone bowl (lettuce,mushrooms,rice , egg with your choice of meat and sauce ) I got my food before him and nearly finished it before he got his meal . That's not really something that bothers me . It's understandable sushi would be faster than a hot meal . I couldn't stop staring at how much food he had in the bowl . Apparently he was eating this dish incorrectly and one of our waiters nicely gave him instructions . . My boyfriend made a comment about the bathrooms being downstairs , said he felt like he was in the basement ... So yeah I didn't use the facilities .
