A restaurant that gives different menus and items to non-Chinese folk, with awful American Chinese fare. I walked in and was handed a menu. Bloomington has some excellent Sichuan food, which is the primary Chinese cuisine in town, so when I saw Oasis' extensive menu with a number of spicy dishes listed I got excited and assumed they were Sichuan too. Mistake #1. Mistake #2: Their dinner plates are $8.50, so when I ordered Sichuan shrimp, I should have guessed based on the price that the serving would have only 5 medium sized shrimp. And as I placed my shrimp order I asked if it has any vegetables, and the server pointed me to the veggie dish section. Assuming the shrimp came on its own I ordered a broccoli in garlic sauce ($6.50). Both dishes finally came in identical plates, with the shrimp served with broccoli as well. Like you could tell me that the shrimp came with veggies so I wouldn't order this abundance of broccoli? But she made me order an extra dish with the SAME sauce? These would have been forgiven were it not for the appalling sauce, which resembles the goopy brown cornflour-dumped ketchup-like abomination that passes for everything from General Tso's to "Sichuan" to garlic sauce. I abhor "American Chinese" food loaded in sugar, so I'm unreasonably upset. There was NO difference between my "Sichuan" dish and my "garlic sauce" dish barring a few measly shrimp. And the same sauce has NO heat or spice; an anticlimax considering I was expecting a dish loaded with numbing Sichuan peppercorn and whole chillies. I realized after I was almost done with my meal that the people in the table across me had a different menu with pictures -- and that they were ordering food clearly not on my menu. Well, they stuck me with the American Chinese menu and it sucks. I was very disappointed with my meal. Will not bother coming here again. read more

Every time I've gone here, it's been phenomenal. The crab Rangoon is great, the grocery store connected to the restaurant is awesome. The selection is vast. I've never gotten high-end food here but all of the sort of cheap snacks have been GREAT! I will be back time and time again especially since I can bike there! read more

They served moldy rice cakes. Many of them were discolored. We did not realize it first and ate several of them. When we first let our server know, she offered us "a new dish" for the rice cake. They gave us 25% discount at the end. read more

Terrible service. Very bad attitude! I ordered the food and paid online, they told me to pick up the order after 30-45 minutes. I arrived at the restaurant after one hour, and the waitress told me the food was not ready. She then told the chef in Chinese to start cooking my food! Apparently they have not yet started to cook my food after a whole hour! I had to wait there for another 30 minutes to get my order!! The waitress was not apologetic at all and instead she told me with a long face and bad attitude that they were super busy. But at that time, only two other customers were eating in their restaurant. I really don't care if it's politically incorrect to complain about this but if your servers speak such poor English (or at least are so unfamiliar with Chinese food) that they can't get a simple order correct and it creates a comedy of errors, the restaurant should not be employing them. Ordering a simple lunch should not resemble a Bachman-and-Jian-Yang scene on Silicon Valley. Came in for lunch and, after being ignored and signaling new waitress, ordered "Shrimp won ton and seafood noodle soup." The menu lists a choice of 4 noodle types. I specify the "thin Cantonese egg noodles." Pointed with my finger to both items for the new waitress, who seemed a little uncertain. New waitress comes back a few minutes later. "You wanted udon noodles, or egg in soup?" Neither. *Egg noodles* like it says on the menu. Waitress hurries back. Soup comes. Thin Cantonese egg noodles in broth (great!) but with just a few shrimp. No won tons. No other seafood. I point this out. Waitress: "You said you didn't want dumplings or egg." I never said I didn't want dumplings. Another woman comes over, seemingly someone in charge. I point out I ordered soup with "seafood." Boss lady: "Shrimp is seafood." So it's gonna be that way? Ok, so where are the won tons? "No won ton?" No. Soup goes back to the kitchen. Comes back a while later with dumplings, shrimp, squid, scallops, and crab sticks. Ok, this is what I ordered! Meanwhile, I asked for sweet sour sauce for my egg roll. New waitress brings a little container of soy dumpling sauce. I say I asked for sweet and sour sauce. "That is sweet and sour sauce." No, it's not. I return to table shaking my head and consume egg roll with resignation. Five minutes later am brought a little bowl of bright red sweet and sour sauce. SMH. The food was actually fresh and tasty -- very good. I will come back to try more things but hope for a different server. read more

I've been there twice. First time was New Year's Eve a few years back and the place was completely empty save for the owner and her children. You'd thought we'd get tremendous service seeing how as we were the only customers, but instead the owner seemed somewhat irritated with us for causing such an imposition by rudely patronizing the restaurant. That said, the food was pretty good and it's close to our house, so we decide maybe next time we'll just get carry out. So, last fall, we suddenly found our house child-free for the evening. There was a home football game that night and it was late in the fourth quarter, so we decide to call in an order in hopes of getting over there quickly and picking up our order before the post-game traffic mess. We got to the restaurant and there were no parking spots, so I waited in the car while my wife went in. After about ten minutes, we finally got our food (or so we thought) and drove home. At home, I took the food out of the bag and it wasn't ours. We were standing there discussing what to do when the restaurant calls us to inform us that A) we took the wrong order, B) that we need to drive it back over, and C) wants to know how long it will take to get there. Obviously, you'll have to imagine all this being said over the phone in broken English by a pissed-off Chinese woman. No apology to be found. Since we live close and we wanted what we ordered, we jumped in the car and drove back. And here's the kicker, the customer whose order we accidentally received was sitting there waiting on it. Let me reiterate this so far....we drove it home, unwrapped everything, wrapped it back up, and drove it back over and, as far as I can tell, she was still planning on selling it to this poor sap. He seemed to be a good sport about and joked about how he was glad we didn't eat his food, but there's just something pretty wrong about all of this. Oh yeah, and she also said our order was actually more and charged us the difference, which came out to something like $1.28. So, if this weren't comical enough, when we got home with our actual order, mine was pretty good. I think I ordered something like General's Chicken or something very unauthentic, as I usually do. My wife, however, ordered chicken with mushrooms, which consisted of, literally, some mushrooms and chicken bones. Granted, there was some meat on the bones, but not much. Imagine you took a chicken leg and cut off the "rounded" bit of the bone on the non-meaty end. Think of how little meat there is there and that's pretty much what they pass off as chicken. The whole thing looked *a lot* like table scraps. At least we had a good laugh. Or at least I did. My wife tried the make the best of it, but it's tough to make a meal out of fungus and bones unless you're Shrek. It made for a funny story, but needless to say, we won't be back. read more

I don't know where to begin to describe my experience with Oasis. May be the name Oasis give me a warm and fussy feeling inside, but the service is definitely not up to the namesake. The owner (frozen face lady) was intimidating. A lot of my friends said maybe because she is nervous when she speaks English. Let me tell you, she is 10 times more "pissed-off" when she speaks Chinese. Don't call the social service if you heard her "yelling" her daughter. I assure you that's just normal, and I am sure she loves her daughter very much. Just difference in parenting. Food was okay but not worth the price. I ordered a braised pork with preserved vegetable. Taste okay but it is ice cold inside. I think they precook the pork, and microwave it per order for 14 bucks. I remember this place used to be alright a couple years ago, but apparently they've changed ownership. This review will be short. I don't really want to spend too much time on this place. There's really not much to say. Clam gourd soup: not bad Rice with roast duck, chicken, and pork: too dry String bean: way too salty. We wrapped this to go since we really couldn't eat this there. Once at home, we had to boil this in hot water to wash out the saltiness. After 2 washes, we were finally able to eat this. This place also has karaoke in private rooms. I used to come here in the past whenever I came in town to eat and to sing. It used to have the best selection (even though still limited) in town. I order seafood with bean curd over rice, around $9 include tax there are 1 pc of squid big as my pinky finger, 1 pc of scallop big as thump nail ( I'm vietnamese so you can guess how big I'm), 4 shrimps (71-90 count), few pcs of fish ball stripped and bean curd, taste ok not really special. Another order is seafoos dumpling and seafood with noodle soup, around $12 include tax, I got 2 shrimps (31-40count), 2pinky squids, 2 nail scallop, few sliced fish ball, 2 slice fake crab meat, 2 dumpling (not sure what it made from). Soup tasted like water, no flavor. I order to go so they supposed to know that they should separate soup and noodle like all other places usually do, but they mix together in 1 jar and when I get my food, the noodle is like overcook. I'm not gonna lie, it's a little intimidating walking into a restaurant where the owners don't speak much English. At first it may not seem very welcoming, but that's just the culture and language barrier. Every time I have been here, I've ordered the fried rice (classic white guy move). But let me say, as someone who absolutely loves chicken fried rice, this is the best I have ever had. And it is the perfect amount for an entire meal for 1. If you're nervous about trying new things like me, just roll with the chicken fried rice, you won't be dissappointed. Karaoke aside, the food was alright. They tasted Chinese - dishes that probably can be cook by most of the Chinese friends that I know of. But again, ingredient, time, and an open fire are luxuries that not everybody has. So we go out and eat. With limited supply of Chinese restaurants in town, and the fact that it's 12am, Oasis was the obvious choice. Like the baby girl from Children of Men - the fact that they are opened is a welcoming sign. But unlike the Chinese take-outs you see in sitcoms and movies, paying $10 for a bowl of noodle or $8.95 for a bowl of soup sounds a little steep (especially for a town of 70k). Ignoring all that, I actually find that the restaurant waitress (or the owner) was missing the point. Rather than focusing on increasing it's customer base because it's just so new, they are focusing on the quarters and dimes that make up the next bowl of wonton soup. The experience was wrong to begin with. And with the poor quality of the impatience of Man (e.g. me) - they rarely, voluntarily give others' second chance. Oasis is awesome. I can understand why other reviewers have said to take a Chinese friend or at least someone who can speak and read Chinese. So I am lucky in that respect that I speak and read Chinese. I've had a great experience. Their food is mostly northern Chinese Cuisine, which I love. Having lived in China for a year and a half, I am pretty picky about my food, but this is spot on. Authentic and the atmosphere is just as I would expect in China. I love this place. Beware, the food is served like in China- large plates and meat HAS bones in it, but don't be discouraged. Those dishes are so good. Finally, for the less adventurous they have the general tao's chicken, sweet and sour, orange etc.. This place, to me, is just perfect. read more

I came here to write 4 words because I thought I could sum up what makes Oasis the best place for Chinese food in Bloomington: best lomein in town. I mean it, buddy. I've had all the lomein in town, you name it. Nothing beats Oasis lomein. It's really, really, good. They don't skip out on the details. If you've ever been to Hong Kong Kitchen in Madison, Indiana, it's like their lomein. I finally found my Bloomington equivalent. I like it! Fast (10~ minutes) and fresh (those had to be freshly cooked vegetables, not canned or frozen). That was the most surprising part that the vegetables had a crunch/bite to them that only fresh vegetables just cooked have. It's a little distant from downtown and I rarely make it to this side of town, but they deliver. Their crab rangoons were delightful and creamy! read more

We went to Oasis over the weekend. Upon arriving we noticed that there were a lot of Chinese people in the restaurant so we took that as a good sign. However, I think the Chinese menu they order from is better than the English menu they gave us. I ordered the Hunan Beef which was a little chewy. A friend got the General Tso's Chicken and it was good but nothing to rave about. If you have someone who knows what they're doing and could possibly read a Chinese menu, it would probably be worth going...but our personal experience wasn't that great. read more

Do not waste your money. My family and I ordered food because we love Chinese food. We did not receive the amount of food that was we paid for. When we presented this issue to the manager and the owner, the owner refused to speak to us and had to call a COLLEGE student from nearby to communicate with us. While I speaking in a way that was as respectful as possible, they said that my displeasure with their food was a sign of racial discrimination. I apologized if I made anyone feel that way, but that was not present in any of my verbiage. In fact, I am half Asian myself. I cannot understand how an establishment could be so horrible. I would say that the food here is quite good, and the value for the money is very good. The people working there do not speak English very well, so this can be a tad difficult, but if you want good food at a good price, I would say this is a very solid option. Not the best food, but for the price it cannot be beat! I also have never got that stomach-churning sensation after my meal that I have gotten from a number of Chinese places in town and everywhere, so I believe it to be cleanly. My FAVORITE Chinese restaurant in town! It is delicious and a great place to go! Their karaoke is fantastic as well. For only $30 an hour you can rent a room and sing tunes with your friends. The food here is excellent - but you have to know what to order. They offer Americanized dishes but they also have some great traditional dishes that are well-prepared. If it's busy, service can be slow but it's a family-run restaurant. Be patient and it's well worth the wait. One of the better Chinese food offerings in town. read more
