Cute place. It may be slightly run down but not yet to the point where it's concerning. I liked the colourful atmosphere with the painted walls and stained glass decoration in the windows, and I thought my seat was very cozy. The food is diner-style but very good so far. I visited twice for a breakfast and a lunch. Lunch: I had a Black Russian sandwich and a pot of Emperor's Pride tea. The sandwich, which is a vegetarian version of a Reuben with roasted veggies instead of meat, was delicious. They really piled on the veggies. Some fell out of the sandwich, but I just ate them with the home fries. The home fries also were nicely seasoned. The tea was a little off. It's possible it was the tea itself that didn't taste how I expected, but it kind of tasted like I was getting the flavour of a different tea in the pot. Breakfast: Apple pancake and bouquet latte (seasonal special - lavender Ceylon tea latte with honey and rose syrup). The bouquet latte was wonderful and had this beautiful red swirl latte art. The pancake was nice and fluffy. One pancake is something like $5, but one is enough for a complete meal, maybe with a protein side if you're especially hungry. We went here for brunch and had the French toast with fruit and it was amazing! Parked in the parking garage across the road Nd walked right in and was seated. The seating is quite cramped but we didn't mind. The interior is eclectic but whimsical. Food was delicious and we had fast friendly service. read more

I'm not sure why we don't go to the Runcible Spoon more often, but honestly think we kind of forget it. Son decided he wanted to go as he was craving breakfast for dinner, so off we went. Again, as always, was impressed and enjoy the quirky nature of the Spoon. RS is in an old house just off Kirkwood. A bunch of smaller rooms, plus a large outdoor dining patio out front. We got lucky with parking on the street pretty close to the restaurant (no real parking lot) and I would have preferred to eat outside but daughter got to the hostess first and we ended up indoors. Everyone ended up with breakfast choices. Wife had an omelette, said it was great. I had banana+granola pancakes (two) which was plenty. The flavor was great. Also eggs and toast. Son had the Kevin which is basically what I ordered but with French Toast. Daughter had a chocolate chip pancake which she enjoyed. Overall, great food and very reasonable. Service was on point and again the atmosphere is fun and quirky. Need to add to our regular rotation. read more

Came here on a weekend solo trip to Bloomington and I think honestly I picked the busiest and most college student filled coffee shop around to visit, lol. I was looking for a place I could sit and quietly read but this was definitely not the place. Staff however was very friendly and service was good. I had a raspberry mocha which was huge and overall no complaints. I got the corned beef hash and this is what really confused me. It's definitely not a hash. It's more a mashed potato pancake with corned beef inside it. A hash is typically a bunch of chopped veggies, potatoes and meat mixed together but this was literally like eating straight mashed potatoes. The flavor was good but it was not what I was looking for and I would rename this to a corned beef potato pancake. Eggs were cooked well and toast was tasty. I probably wouldn't be back if I return to Bloomington, but I would explore other coffee shops in the area. It does have cool vibes and eclectic decor though. read more

Runcible Spoon is an average breakfast spot. The vibe is great, as it is a cozy spot near Kirkwood with outdoor seating, perfect for a warm summer day. However, the food is not up to par. The bacon was a bit burnt, and the eggs were not seasoned at all. The price is decent, but the overall food quality could be better. Additionally, they did not have many options to accommodate for the gluten free member of my party. Service was decent, with food coming out relatively quickly. read more

This is a nice little restaurant in B-ton, IN. From the outside, it appears to be a house in a neighborhood right off the main campus. We arrived at the opening time to have breakfast or brunch. We parked on the street - and realized it was metered parking. There wasn't much of a wait, but the crowd was building. We sat in the main dining room. Our restaurant server, who was very friendly, promptly greeted us. We both ordered the classic Benny. Along with coffee, I had a mimosa because why not? The food was good, and it was a large portion of the $. Overall, it was a good visit and a nice little brunch place in Bloomington. Recommended! read more

I've been to the Runcible Spoon many times and have always loved this place. My go to dish is the veggie eggs benedict, though the salmon eggs benedict is also very good. A side of their house potatoes are also a good addition if you're feeling extra hungry. The corned beef hash is also a good dish. The service there is generally very fast, even when it's really busy, and the layout accommodates large and small parties. There's plenty of seating upstairs and downstairs, and the restaurant is very homely and comfortable. read more

The menu items we got we okay, nothing special and seemed pricy for what we got (esp for the French toast, it was made of regular white bread, I expected it would be sour dough or at least a thicker kind of toast, and the cost to add fruit was more than I expected). I've only been here for breakfast until recently. I can't recommend it for dinner. They were out of several things and goofed up the order for someone with food allergies. And then took 15-20 minutes to correct it. The ambiance is cool. The service seems to be better at breakfast. We never got the iced tea or second glass of wine. I had the spinach and chicken quesadilla and it was only slightly better than fast food. Give breakfast a try but stay away the rest of the day. read more

The Spoon is a good restaurant that uses fresh ingredients and has an amazing staff. It's consistently the best eating out value in Bloomington. Yes, you can probably get better meals but you'll pay twice as much. It's a Bloomington is con that has stood the test of time. Great coffee and tea selections. Get the salmon hash with two poached eggs for breakfast or brunch. They have the best Reuben in town and the salmon fillet dinner is also exceptional. Find another place that has a decent $20 bottle of wine. They always have some great unique beers on draft or as well. We eat here monthly for 19 years. It's always our go to. Enjoy! read more

After a long day of touring, my daughter and I stopped here and situated ourselves at a table on the porch. We weren't sure what to order and really just needed a quick bite to share that would hold us over until dinner. Our server was super friendly and suggested the home fries with any kind of topping we would like. She came back with a delicious plate of potatoes covered with fresh veggies - broccoli, carrots, onions, spinach and zucchini and topped with melted swiss cheese. This was the perfect healthy snack and we enjoyed it immensely. We paired it with iced teas - I had a traditional black iced tea and my daughter enjoyed one of the many specialty iced teas, the Serene, which was a combination of chamomile, mint, lavender and lemon myrtle. I started with a delicious chai latte that was served in a mug the size of a soup bowl! Ordered the weekender with scrambled eggs, bacon and a pancake. The server cheerfully asked if I wanted to add anything to my pancake and offered me suggestions. I picked banana and granola to add and her excitement was palpable- and spot on! Highly recommend the pancake additions. My scrambled eggs and bacon were delicious and as expected. The portion of eggs was also very generous. My companion ordered biscuits and gravy after confirming the kitchen makes the white gravy with sausage. The biscuits were a little more cakey than flakey, but fine nonetheless. I tried a bite and it was ok, but I was happy with my order. We sat outside and enjoyed the fresh air under the shade of a tree. A small gust of wind dropped some tree litter on the table but I picked it out of my food. Perhaps grab an outdoor table with an umbrella or porch cover instead of the tree to save yourself the extra sprinkling of tree spice ;) Overall, had a great experience. Improving. The menu's not changed, but service seemed more consistent and the food has more attention to detail and consistency. This is a favorite long-time Bloomington haunt, and has dishes and drinks named after ghosts who have eaten here. We knew some of those ghosts. One small complaint is that the coffee.... could be better. This was offset by the wait staff, who were both in the moment/not distracted, and mindful about what they were doing. This is new and welcome. There's lots of variety, and a few vegetarian offerings. It changes only subtly year to year, and that makes it feel like home-- when they're paying attention. read more

So happy this restaurant from my college days is still open. The quirky environment is charming and cozy. We had breakfast in afternoon because I wanted a bagel, a favorite from years ago. Plain is the only flavor they make, and it is perfect. I assume they make them there because the texture is so unique. Oddly enough, bagel was not on the menu, but we were still able to order them. Had an amusing misunderstanding with the server when I ordered two bagels "to go" after eating my brunch. I expected her to put them in a bag so I could eat them at home, but she delivered them toasted with cream cheese. I took them anyway, since I was not more clear with my request. My friend and I went into town for breakfast and were impressed by the service and food at this place! I want to start with the environment because it piques my interest well- a wooded interior, bookshelves, and neat artifacts on the wall. It was cozy to say the least and not crowded. I found it neat to rub elbows with and overhear some conversations from IU staff. Our waitress was great too. She smiled more than most! I got a cappuccino and a corned beef hash, which I admit was an odd combo but one that hit the spot for me. My friend had some pancakes I envied, but it was just wholesome food that wasn't rushed and started a good day for me. The only criticism I have is that my cappuccino was a bit weak, but I suppose some are supposed to be like that. I like having both a cafe-sized coffee menu and heavy breakfast. The wife used to go here in her IU undergrad student days and we have been meaning to stop here for years. The wife ordered a fruit cup and spiced coffee. I had the smoked salmon hash. The server said they were out of the smashed potatoes so I had the salmon over home fries, which were excellent. I would eat the home fries plain. They were perfectly cooked and well seasoned. Service was pretty slow, but it was packed. The Tex mex omelette was very watery because of the large pieces of whole tomatoes in it. I definitely would have skipped those if I knew they were going to be in there. Potatoes were undercooked, and had some kind of curry spice on them that I did not care for.
