I was fortunate to meet Amy Flores several years ago, and even more fortunate to have had her come to my mini-ranch in Novato for private lessons. She's an extremely competent rider, is kind and patient with kids, teens, and great with the over the hill ladies like myself. It was a bit intimidating as a grown woman to get back into riding after not being on a horse for many decades, but Amy took her time and showed me all the ropes from A-to-Z. Literally everything from grooming to tacking to groundwork to lunging work to in the saddle work. She explained the proper way to warm up a horse and how to engage the different body parts to create balance and fluid movement, all with a nice bedside manner and lovely sense of humor, and ever so patient. I also hired her when I was injured in a car wreck, to ride and train one of my horses a few times a week. It kept him going and I trusted her, and that's what is important. My daughter stated riding at the beginning of COVID, it was a super challenging time attending school on Zoom. Amy (Amiable Sporthorse) was recommended through a friend as her daughter took lessons when she was younger. Immediately my daughter fell in love both with Amy and the horses. Looking back I still can't believe how far they have come. Amy has taught my daughter the most important skills or horsemanship and how to read a horse on the ground and while riding. My daughter uses these skills when riding other horses and can judge whether is should be riding the horse or not and can also feel if the horse is going to react. I can't say enough about Amy as an instructor and horsewoman. I am an adult rider (as in WAY-adult) who tried several other instructors before finding Amy. She took my riding, confidence, and horse-knowledge to a level I know I wouldn't have reached without her. She has that rare innate ability to know how much you need to be pushed to get to the next level, but never pushes so far that you leave discouraged. If you learn best with encouragement and precise correction rather than being shamed and yelled at, Amy is your instructor. Amy is a great instructor! As a former co-worker I saw her teach beginner children safely, effectively and of course with a sense of fun! Now that she's started her own business she is no longer my coworker (unfortunately- she was great to work with!) but now gives me (almost) monthly lessons on my own horse and helped me achieve my competitive goal last season in completing the First Level portion of my USDF Bronze Medal and put me well on my way toward meeting the Second Level part this season. She's patient and knowledgable and explains the how and why of each exercise we work on and each correction she gives. There is no one like Amy-- she loves horses, people, and teaching in a way that makes learning effortless.
