I just had my hair braided today by Amina -- and my experience was absolutely wonderful! Amina truly cares for her clients and her work is flawless. I set up an appointment over the phone for 9:00am on a Thursday. As an African with natural/virgin hair, I walked in to Amina's fearing the worst. I've had countless braiders roughhouse my natural hair; however, by contrast, Amina was gentle with (and respectful of!) my thick and sensitive head of hair. I went to Amina for hair extensions. I am white and had asked a good friend where she had her extensions done. Her hair was beautiful. She suggested Amina. Amina was WONDERFUL!!!! I had tried hair extensions at other salons with no success. I tried the beaded ones and they hurt my head. I tried the tape and they fell out in a week. But with Amina, it was FOOLPROOF! She had me buy the natural hair. I purchased the hair at Tease in Costa Mesa. I was able to get an appointment with Amina in the same week so I could have long hair by my husband's birthday. Amina corn rowed my hair and then "sewed" the extensions onto my hair. I've had them for 6 weeks now and they are amazing!!! No one can tell they are extensions. They are super easy to take care of. And so far, I don't need to have them removed and re-installed. Amina was very professional and kind. She didn't chat on the phone and seemed to truly care about me. Two birds, one stoned. part one: Amina did an excellent job I've had these blues in for 5 weeks now and still getting compliments. I went in needing to manage and control my hair for extended work and leisure travel. I knew I needed my hair braided to keep the dreaded locks away. I have thick super hero straight hair. I had a high end salon do my braids once, as they claimed they could do braids & cornrows, they fell out after sleeping on them. Sooo this time I called Amina. I wanted and needed the real deal. Someone not wasting my time OR $$$! I couldn't be happier, well now that I know what I need next time I can actually tell her what I'd like. But Amina did an excellent job anyways. I gave her full creative reign over the design while in her chair only requesting partial cornrows and individual braids in back so I can pull it up off my neck... She knew what would work and went for it. She worked really fast too. I spent 8.5 hours in the chair and my hair is long with braids down it reaches my butt crack. Suppppper tight braids!!! Couldn't be happier. Part2: one stoned lol As for Amina and dreds (listen up white people this parts for you) If u think u can go in with white people hair and come out with perfectly manicured tightened dreds after only a few hours in the chair you are sadly mistaken. Please do some research about a hair style before u think u know what to expect to walk out with. Dreds take years of manicuring, rolling, sewing and back combing to tighten even after initial professional installation. The only reason I add this is because I ran into someone in the Same industry that heard a friend shit talkin his experience here for the simple reason that he thought when he got up out of the chair with his magically straight white people hair that he would walk out lookin like he had them dreds in for years. Secondly the require lots of maintenance! Otherwise like in this kids case eventually turned into a giant singular beaver tail of a natty dred. Lol now im sure he just looks like a lot of the dirty hippie train hoppin street kids he was hoping to appear better than. Point here is dont come here thinking if you pay someone one time to start your dreds that that's the only work on them you'll ever have to do or pay for ever again why? cuz dreds are high maintenance my lil white family of friends. I had two-strand kinky twists done by another braider in Long Beach and was not happy with the results. The twists started falling out immediately! I had to keep going back to have them put back in and she charged me for this inferior service! It's embarrassing to walk down the street with your twists falling out! So I decided to try another braider and found Amina on Yelp. Amina is the best braider I have been to. She is a true business women and professional. She asks for a $50 deposit when you come in for a consultation and set an appointment. Then on the day of your appointment after she tested a few twists for length and thickness, she braids for 1 hour. At the end of that hour, I check out what she had done. If I don't like it she'll remove it and there is NO CHARGE. If I do like what she has done, we both sign a contract and I pay her in full. She only accepts cash. What a concept! There is nothing worst than sitting in chair for hours and being disappointed in how your hair looks. Not going to happen with Amina! And how is it that she uses less hair but there is no scalp showing? This looks for my real hair complete with grey hair added in. I went to Amina in October 2014 to get braids done ahead of my vacation to Maui. I wanted to be able to go from the water to a restaurant without having to spend an inordinate amount of time fixing my hair in between. I came in a couple of weeks ahead of my appointment for a consultation. She checked the length/thickness of my hair, quoted me a price and I paid her a down-payment to hold my appointment. She also told me where I could go to purchase braid hair. (I went somewhere else. It ended up working out but I should have listened to Amina!) Anyway, I came in as scheduled for my appointment and Amina was ready. Now, I've had braids off and on since I was in elementary school (although at this point I hadn't worn them in probably 10+ years) and the one thing I prepared myself for was for it to HURT. I am extremely "tender headed" (as hair people like to phrase it) and there was rarely a time when I didn't finish getting braids in tears (or very nearly in tears.) It was the price I paid for the convenience of not having to do my hair for ~6 weeks at a time. The first thing I noticed with Amina was that there was NO PAIN. That worried me a bit, because the assumption is if it's not braided "tight" then it's not going to stay in. NOT THE CASE here. Amina's work is of the highest quality. She knows every braiding procedure in the book and uses them to make every hair style unique and suitable for the person who's hair she is braiding. I couldn't have been more happy with my braids and, while I originally had planned to just wear them for just the week I was on vacation and remove them when I got home, I ended up really loving them (and getting HEAPS of compliments on them - even in my very straight-laced conservative workplace), so I kept them in for over a month. This review is long overdue. Amina is seriously the BEST. I have always gone to her whenever I wanted to spice things up and look edgy. She knows how to make my thin hair look good! Amina has the biggest heart of gold and I really mean that. I tell all my friends to go to her!! The day before my wedding, my sis & another bridesmaid wanted to get side cornrows. Bruh, I was so down! Long story short, we got them done by her. If anyone didn't like something, Amina would make it so that we loved it!
