I'll start by saying I've known about Stylette for a while--it's actually how I found my original hairdresser. However, with my regular stylist currently on vacation and a birthday trip coming up, I did extensive research across OC and LA to find someone for (my first) Korean perm and a haircut. Based on his portfolio and reviews, I specifically sought out Kyu (Co-Director). I want to be clear about my preference: I am a woman, but I prefer and always show references for men's styles. I specifically look for Korean salons because I value the precision and skill they usually bring to these cuts. Unfortunately, the quality of the haircut I received did not meet that standard. While cutting, Kyu used a buzzer on one sideburn to shape it but only used scissors on the other. I'm not a professional in the field, but this definitely set off some alarms. When I raised concerns about the unevenness, I was told it would be checked after the perm. When he checked it again at the end and I pointed out the sideburns were still off, his response was: "It's not going to be perfect. If you try to make it perfect it will look bad." I was honestly too shocked to react. Because of that dismissive comment, I didn't even feel comfortable pointing out that the back was also uneven. I've seen the loose and curly perms Kyu has posted on Instagram, but mine looks nothing like those. It turned out looking more like a bad blowout than a technical perm. I'm incredibly bummed to be heading into my birthday feeling disheartened about my hair. I've added a star because the staff was very kind--from the director offering water to the assistant who washed my hair--but I expected much higher caliber work from a Co-Director. If you're looking for technical symmetry and a professional response to feedback, I would suggest looking elsewhere. read more

I found out about Stylette hair studio through social media and I'm so glad I did! When I originally booked online, I didn't have a preference on who I saw so I was surprised when Kyu (the Co-Director) was the one taking care of me that day. He cut my hair literally just that one time and I knew I wouldn't be able to go to anywhere else because he so skilled and good at what he does! The next time I came in, I was an hour early (by mistake), but he was still able to accommodate me which I greatly appreciated. I wasn't sure what kind of cut I wanted to do this time so we talked about my hair and why some cuts would look nicer than others. Best haircut I've personally gotten! I showed one photo and was able to check in with my stylist during the cut to make sure it would turn out as I hoped. She took her time, and I'm pleased with the results. Great that they accommodate same-day appointments, but I arrived on time and waited nearly 30 minutes with only one stylist working and finishing two cuts before mine. This place is a total hit or miss. I usually go to Kyu, he's great most of the time and generally gets pretty close to what I want in terms of overall design. Though even he has his off days, and I've had some undesirable results from him a few times. This time, I had to book with Caroline and I was very clear about what I wanted, even provided reference photos, but the result was way off. It looked nothing like what I asked for. She was extremely polite and sweet and I appreciate that she charged me half and threw in a free down perm, but honestly, that didn't make up for the bad cut. The perm didn't help, and I still walked out with a look I didn't want. What sucks is that I really want to like this place. I've been here many times and have had some great cuts, but after this experience, I just can't in good conscience give them 5 stars. I showed Caroline my reference photo of a long flowy men's haircut. I had grown my hair out for about 5 months prior to this haircut. Prior to the haircut I told Caroline that I would like to perm my hair in 3 months, indicating that I'd like it long. She proceeded to then give me, essentially, a two block haircut and cut the top so short that I now need to wait another 6-8 months before I can perm my hair. Additionally, the top she cut was lopsided where the left side was much lower than the right. When mentioned, she said thank you and proceeded to fix the lopsidedness. I ultimately gave up on her haircut and left as I was there nearly an hour with her trying to fix my hair. When I left, I noticed her "fix" made things worse and there was a chunk of hair that wasn't blended and was like a staircase zig zag line. Caroline may be wonderful at women's hair as seen in the reviews, but do not go to her for a men's cut. read more

I moved to the area about a year ago and have been looking for a new salon. I tend to be particular with what I'm looking for and I must say Director Yop surpassed my expectations! I was in desperate need for a root retouch and so we went through a detailed consultation before proceeding with the actual process. He made sure there was clear communication in the dying process and what steps he'll take to make my root hair color blend in well with the rest of my hair. I currently have hair extensions and I know it can be a bit tricky working with them, but he made it absolutely easy and comfortable. As soon as we washed the dye out I immediately loved the color as he was drying my hair. He helped me shape my hair as I needed a bit of a trim and clean up and layered it where it would fall naturally and beautifully.
