This place is a hidden gem! It's actually three small restaurants in one. The prices are excellent. My family usually gets the following: masala dosa, vada, aloo paratha with dal makhini, mango lassi and masala chai. Their sambar is EXCELLENT. We sometimes bring a large container home. The service is what you would expect for the money... 3/5 at best (that's why I took a star off). There is an area for seating but it's a bit limited. We never have issues finding a seat though. I was in Edison to meet my friend from Ohio. I do not want to miss an opportunity to enjoy close to home food, especially with NJ being known for a prominent Indian community presence. My friend's cousin who lives in Edison, recommended this for an Authentic Tamilnadu food. He was damn right. I ordered a Non- vegetarian meals, because I can try more items as I was by myself. Food was served in banana leaves - which makes eating with hands easier and comfortable. Sambar and Vatha Kuzhambu was delicious. Staff were friendlier and courteous. Just the restaurant was located inside the mall. The lighting poster they placed on the wall of the mall doesn't stands out. This makes finding the place quite stressful. Having heard good reviews for non veg items here so wanted to try this place for quite some time. It was Diwali and we decided to try this place as we badly wanted non veg dish with South Indian touch. From the outside it just had a printed out banner and it was a simple looking restaurant, even the menu items showcased were regular printouts. Prices were reasonable and far less compared to other restaurants. We had our doubts as it wasn't crowded but still we ordered goat Biriyani and chicken 65. Both were of sufficient quantity for both of us and taste was South Indian-ish. Goat pieces were not that fresh but we reached the place at the end of day so it was obvious I guess but the flavor of the Biriyani was really good. The guy helping with order whom I believe is the owner was very friendly and was kind enough to invite us as well for Diwali celebration at their store. Overall a very good experience at this joint and will definitely visit them again. read more

recently in my past few visits i had bad experience . 1) mid week tried chicken biriyani n combo fish for lunch chicken in the biriyani was stale smelled old n fish gravy was definitely old where the gravy is mixed with the fish bones . (we thought we came on a bad day or ordered wrong item of the day) 2) new year buffet: mutton biriyani -pieces were uncooked-chewy n we thought they were in a hurry to serve it. it took an hr for us we never saw shrimp refiled only gravy was left in the tray. 3) today we ordered chicken briyani n chicken combo half the biriyani was good rest of the half was oily n crumbly n big pc of old chicken which occupied most space in the bowl served. When we asked them about it as a concern. they deducted the bill for the biriyani. humble feedback for the owners/managers of this branch : When you are running out of the food - say we are running out of it . we dont need the stale food even if u make it free... sure if you not gonna maintain the quality aura of the place had good restaurants but they never stayed longer. read more

Amma's kitchen once provided some delicious South Indian food of great quality. I can't vouch for the same anymore as their taste and quality seems a bit compromised. The food doesn't taste awful, but the taste isn't the same. I took my dad on his birthday to try their unlimited meal for lunch. We were told that it would start at 12:30 but then had to wait another 20 minutes to get the items ready. Was the food worth the wait, not so much. The portion is absolutely great but for the price we pay. They have moved to a different location with more room within the same distance. Plus, this time, the restaurant looks a lot more cleaner and tidy, which is a plus. We were seated right away, and we ordered some tiffin items to start off as the wait time for our unlimited meal was taking so long. They had Chicken Biryani, Goat Biryani, chicken 65, fish fry, chicken chukka, mutton chukka, raita, Parotta, payasam, buttermilk, and a curry of your choice for the Parotta. Both, the chicken and the goat biryani tasted the same. I couldn't taste any difference and it tasted like it was just warmed up. Didn't taste fresh. But I have to give a thumbs up for the Parotta, fish fry , chicken chukka and their tiffin items. It tasted absolutely delicious. I wish they work on the quality and taste of each of their dishes going forward and attract more people. I would like to give them a try with their vegetarian meal and see how that turns out before giving up. As I've mentioned before, they don't taste horrible but they can definitely do better with the taste, quality and also CUSTOMER SERVICE. read more

Wow so so good! We got the chicken curry, goat curry, veggie uthappam, chicken 65, and malabar parottas. Everything was fantastic. I personally liked the goat curry better than the chicken curry and would go with that on my next visit. I am very particular about sambar as I feel most places have watery and low flavor sambar. The sambar at Amma's was great! Not quite as good as my Amma's but still very good. The servings are large and the price is good, I am looking forward to go again. read more

Amma's kitchen was delightful. I had to come back twice! The fist time I went late around 9pm and ordered the dosa combo. It was only $5 and a ton of food including a plain dosa, idli, cada, and pongal... so much and so delicious! The dosa was super crispy and the sandbar complimented it perfectly. The service is great and the workers are kind. But remember it's self service, so go to the counter and Oder your food ... and when your done clean up your tray. The second time I came for the Friday lunch non veg thali. It came out on a large banana leaf on a tray. The food was delicious yet again. I had the chicken 65, chicken curry, fish curry, sambar, rassam, and chicken byriani. All this for $12! I can't wait to come back on a Saturday or Sunday for the big banana leave thali! Excellent South Indian food. We went on a weekend and opted for the unlimited non veg thali. This served in military hotel style on banana leaves with service at the table. The food was excellent and reminiscent of Chennai hotels. Spice level was just right. The wait staff were very attentive courteous. Both non veg and veg items were available. Very very enjoyable. One caveat, to enjoy the thali style meal, you have be comfortable eating with your fingers. Alternatively you can order a la carte and it is served in a different section. read more

OK . I finally visited the place on Thursday . the parking lots were empty but side road parking were occupied one of the social/spiritual place . I am not sure ..how a commercial and spiritual places sustain side by side ..not a good idea. And parking there is kind of weird..there is no space in front . I try to order gobi Manchuria from the menu ..but it seems they donot have it (if they donot have it ..why to mention in menu ?) ..so waiter "suggest" me have Gobi 65 instead..it is nothing but a corn coated deep fried item ..which is no way near to my expectations .Disappointed .( Realized the price is around $5 or $6 ..I cannot expect better than this ) . I am feeling it is easy for chef deep fry it than to do Manchuria. ..in the mean time spiritual place parking manage guy rushed into this place ..warning everybody not park in side roads ..else it will be towed..kind of strange. Then I order biriyani (around 10 $) .. which is nothing but a mass precooked item which is ok (doesnot look like basmati rice . I am kind of spoiled eating Hyderbad biriyanis in past ..this biriyani is no match to that ) ..lot of oil ..I felt like it taste very routine like bachelors biriyani..you can see that right there in a big pot..and very tiny cups of side items like raita and gravy. I did not feel any wow factor or amazing thing in the restaurant . they are using micro woven so generously which proven the food is not made fresh. They can do better ..which is more flavors and more fresh and hot food. I feel like it is more kind of fast food joint that restaurant . Your experience may vary and depend upon your order. To start with the food is excellent. Real authentic South Indian, to be very specific, South Tamil Nadu taste. We were in Edison area in November. We were looking for some Indian food for dinner, my wife suggested this Amma's Kitchen, by googling, sounds like real South Indian place. The place was hard to find. It is in Strip Mall without outside lights and prominent sign so it was difficult to spot in the night time. It is a small dine-in with take-out place. I ordered Chicken Biryani, Parotta and Egg Curry. Wow! I was blown away by the taste of Biryani. I never tasted any authentic Biryani like this in North America. This Biryani is made with special South Tamil Nadu rice not Basmathi rice. Basmathi rice have the tendency to mask the smell and taste of other species but this rice rather enhances flavor. My wife had Fish Curry and Parotta. Egg curry and Fish curry both were very good. Fish curry was little spicy hot, but I like that way. Regarding the presentation, may be this business is new. It was Saturday dinner time, too many customers, too many take out orders, only 3 or 4 people working behind cash register and two of them were cooks. Simple they couldn't handle the demand. So, the place is like a Street Corner food stall in India; Small kids running around, frustrated customers yelling and demanding their orders, people cut the lines try to place their orders or grab the items from the counter. Utter confusion. However, business owners were very patient, with smiley face work with customers and try to satisfy everybody. If you don't bother this inconvenience, this is the place for the authentic tasty South Indian food. read more

We were really excited to try the new south Indian place in Oak Tree Road. The highlights: - Their idly and vadai combo was quite stellar. The coconut chutney was fresh (and had that amazing coarse texture which I love), and the sambar was perfection (no sugar in it, thank god!). The idly were perfectly fluffy pillows. The vadai- were a little greasy, but they were so supremely crispy, it was marvelous. - The Vegetarian Kotthu Parotta was also quite good. Piping hot, very Spicy (with copious quantities of chopped green chillis), flavorful and beautifully balanced. The dish was served with Raita and Salna (which is hard to find in Indian restaurants in the US). The awful: - We also ordered the Chilli idly dish- which is an 'Indian-Chinese' fuson staple in many Chennai restaurants. That was our big mistake. They used some strange store-bought synthetic sauce that was inedibly spicy to the point of being bland (because the only thing you taste is the heat). We had to spit out the one mouth we ate. We sent the dish back- we weren't willing to torture ourselves any further. Service: - Prepare to wait. Service is very slow and disorganized. - They forgot to give us glasses to drink water, and our drinks arrived after we finished our meal. - We got an unwanted lecture on how 'chilli idly' means its going to be spicy - and they wanted to charge us for the dish we sent back because we should have "known better". Ultimately, they grudgingly removed it from our bill when we pressed them to. Verdict: - Stick to ordering traditional Tamil dishes- like the Kothu parotta, dosa, vadai and idly- their chef seems to make these dishes well. Avoid the north indian/indian chinese dishes. - They have an extensive non-vegetarian menu. While I can't give you any insights on the taste of those dishes (I'm vegetarian), there were some really traditional Chettinad dishes in there, and an extremely affordable thali (platter/tasting menu) which would definitely be a great way to get introduced to their food. - A great little spot to get away and have a nice long conversation (since the service is slow). But if you are in a hurry or really hungry, you might want to give this place a miss. read more

A total disappointment. I picked this place based on all of the positive reviews I read on here. In retrospect, it's hard to imagine that those reviews aren't written by anyone but family members and friends of the restaurant. They are so inaccurate. I placed an order to pick up: chicken biryani, dal fry, and a masala dosa. I received a call back from a nice woman letting me know they were out of the dal fry and she recommended that the dal sambar would go well with the biryani - sounded good to me. The place was impossible to find. Firstly, this isn't a stand alone restaurant but rather a counter in the midst of several counters in a very dilapidated, run down, half empty mall. Zero ambiance. There is also no sign, which makes the challenge of finding the place that much more, and kind of sketchy. When I finally found the right counter, I was greeted by a nice man who told me they were just finishing up putting my order together. No big deal. Five minutes later it was all packed up and ready to go. The real problem was that when I went to eat my food it turned out both the chicken biryani and the dal sambar were both completely cold. I understand that the food is prepared earlier on in the day, but they couldn't even bothered to reheat it before packing it up for me? Really? There wasn't much chicken or anything else in the biryani and the flavor profile just wasn't right. The dal sambar was mediocre at best. The masala dosa was at least warm, but was very average. It's really a shame because I had high hopes for this restaurant based on the reviews, but I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more
