There are few restaurants that gives a great feeling even though the ambience is average and this one fit that well. The name, picture of JJ and overall decor brings some native feeling and DeJa'Vu moments. The restaurant has its private parking as you enter backside of another store/restaurant along Oak tree road. The interior is okay with lot of tables to dine in and then you can see they do have outdoor dining during warmer months. Staff is friendly and welcoming. As I got here was handed over the menu and seated. The have a robust menu with lot of platter options and ala carte. The Vegetarian options are definitely comparable to the non-Veg options. I ordered the Goat, Parotta and Kushka combo platter. The Seeraga samba Kuska tasted amazing and so is the parotta. The Sukka came with platter was amazing too. This place is hidden from the street and you actually need to drive to a back of a parking lot to find it. Despite this the place was packed with local diners when we were there Saturday evening. The menu was quite expansive and filled with South Indian and Sri Lankan delights. The prices were fairly attractive. The offered selection included foods even I, who is well familiar with Indian kitchen, was not recognizing. The spicing was just right, not mouth burning on the one hand, and not milquetoast aimed at the average local American diner. The flavoring was pretty good, though I have had better in the region. The Parotas (known as Parathas in most of India) were awesome and reminded my very much of Malabar Parathas (if you are familiar with Yemenite Malawach there is a strong resemblance between the two). The fish combo was Good, but the Pomfrete fish curry was very boney and difficult to eat. The fried tilapia was pretty yummy. The Kushka rice was ok. My friend who ordered chicken curry got the curry but it contained mostly bones and barely any meat, but this was rectified after he made the staff aware of this. All in all the food was good. The Rava Dosa was a good portion and the person who ordered it was satisfied. The service was a bit choppy. Perhaps it was due to the influx of dinners at the same time. We were 4 diners and we had to wait for about 15 minutes after 3 of us already got our food, for the last diner to get theirs. By then our food was mostly cold. The ambience is very basis, like a Dhaba. It was no thrills dining, suitable for a popular whole-in-the-wall joint. It was clean but not a tablecloth dining establishment. All Food is inedible Gobi 65 was just fried gobi. I have had better gobi 65 with some flavor elsewhere Baby corn 65 had too much flavor to the extent that I could not taste the baby corn itself. Tasted like bhindi fry. Ridiculous Fish meal was very bad . Fish masala had to much salt . Felt like they gave me stale preserved fish from months ago . But at that point the damage was already done . I had already eaten 4-5 bites . And I was in a super hunger state . So even if I get food poisoning I thought I might as well eat at this point Sambar did not seem to have sambar masala . It was just daal . So basically dosa was bad Idli sambar and Vada sambar looked like dal.Having tasted the sambar I could not get myself to taste that The menu has selective good pics and I wonder if they even serve that here They missed giving the filter coffee till the end and they had the audacity to ask us if they missed serving anything At the end I felt like i was already scammed so I went to check if they are billing me correctly . Because at this point the food was not good and that's the only thing I had control over after being hungry for 2 hours . To my suprise that person missed adding 2 items to the bill . Given the bad level of food quality I kind of felt bad correcting it . When I went back to wash my hands I saw that they use canola oil . I don't think that's healthy .i don't think they use any flavors too . I think they just use canola oil and salt and sell old food for days . I started this review even before I tasted the food here. Seems strange right? Actually .....no for a change. We ordered idli (rice cakes) and medu vada. Medu comes from a Kannda word meaning soft and vada meaning fritters. The vada is made of black lentils. Spices and curry leaves. The 2 dishes are served with chutney and sambar. These south Indian delicacies are hard to find even in India for a $1 each. The have other dishes like the paratha for q dollar too. I'm not sure how the restaurant is making money and what the background is here other than I seeing the picture of Amma..Honorable late CM of TN...Jayalalitha, who has helped and served the people in state she served. I wouldn't be surprised if her foundation is subsidizing the process here. Don't worry, I did taste the food and they were good. Just make sure you eat it hot or get creative by converting the medu vada to dahi vada if you take it to go. Note that idli was voted the most healthiest breakfast. read more

I was extremely disappointed in the experience at this location of Amma's Kitchen. I cannot give this place a single star. In terms of the food, we only tried the parottas with chicken curry and goat curry. The parottas tasted stale, as if they had reheated frozen parottas and both curries were just salty with absolutely no flavor. In terms of the ambiance, the cleanliness was questionable. It is located in a plaza with a shared space with other vendors. There is dust all over the floor and the tables are "self clean." I saw a group of people leaving a table and it wasn't cleaned by anyone before another family sat down. In addition, there were countless people walking through the main area with onion bags and sacks of vegetables. The service was actually decent. I had no complaints about the workers there - they were pleasant and the food was out in a timely fashion. read more

The new location is tucked away at the back of the little plaza, it's roomy but by no means a fancy interior. It's simple and functional for a happy sit down. The girl was extremely polite and had to tell us they weren't doing meals which was what the Mrs had her heart set on, because it wasn't 12:00pm yet. We ordered chicken curry with paratha, a vada plate, masala dosa and a breakfast combo (dosa, idli, vada with sambar, coconut chutney, tomato chutney and peanut chutney. All the dipping chutneys especially the coconut was delicious and the sambar was the epitome of home cooking. We couldn't resist and ordered a fish meal to go since it was 11:40 by the time we were done. The curry was very good and although we brought it home, it would have been better to eat at the restaurant on the thali plate just for the experience. The fish pieces unfortunately were just the filets that you'd get in the frozen section but still very tasty. I'd prefer to try the goat or chicken next time. Definitely looking to go back and try the unlimited meals. Value for money is also excellent and can't be beat on taste. read more

I ordered idli sambhar and other things for my father and requested to make it with very little or no spice. During pick up i asked again, no spice right, he said yes mam no spice. Ate it 20 min later, my mouth was on fire and I'm comfortable with spice, my father is not. Drove all the way and took it back and said pls give me a non spicy sambhar. After some arguing he said okay. I tried it right there and it was exactly the same, except he watered it down. I also asked for yogurt to mild the sambhar down. I brought it home, mixed some yogurt and I noticed in the small bowl of sambhar, there were 3 red chilies. Which part of no spice, made him think I should add 3 chillies.??? Recently tried AMMA's Kitchen new restaurant behind pooja hut in oak tree road. We were there for lunch and tried their unlimited food trial( we can order anything from their menu) this meal is served in a Banana leaf. We were served with starters mutton pepper fry, Goni 65, chicken 65, chicken fry all their starters were excellent and moderately spicy and brought my chennai memories. For the entree, we were served with mutton Thalapa katti Briyani and chicken Briyani. They also served us with fish fry and shrimp Masala they all were awesome. We also asked for 1 parotta and Dosa to taste those as well and they were excellent as well. Food was excellent and service was little slow but it was understandable that it is a new opening and they need to streamline things.
