I was seen by Saxena two years ago. Before I saw him I was warned about how he treated his patients. For my feet pain, he recommended shockwave therapy, which did not work at all and I had to pay 100% out of pocket. For my second and third visits, he did not even show up to see how I was doing. In October 2022, I suffered an Achilles tendon rupture and was referred to Dr. Saxena by my family doctor. I underwent surgery on October 26th. Unfortunately, from December 5th onwards, I experienced significant complications. My left foot swelled, and the wound continued to have discharge for three months, with unabsorbed stitches appearing every month. I was very worried about my condition, but Dr. Saxena showed no concern or interest in my situation. He just simply advised me to clean my wound at home using Alcohol Pre pad every night, and told me this tendon recovery normally need to take 5-6 months. In February, I requested a referral to the Stanford Advance Wound Care, but Dr. Saxena refused to provide it. I was extremely disappointed and felt that he lacked medical ethics. Dr. Saxena seemed more interested in promoting his surgical skills and reputation than providing quality care to his patients. He frequently mentioned that he performed the most surgeries in the Bay Area and that my case was only 1% of his many operations. This dismissive attitude made me feel very unsupported during my recovery. Additionally, when I expressed an interest in learning more about Achilles tendon surgery, Dr. Saxena repeatedly directed me to his website rather than taking the time to explain the procedure to me himself. In summary, I found Dr. Saxena to be a doctor who prioritized surgery over patient care. If given the chance, I would never seek his services again. I had instability in my ankle, which would sporadically result in excruciating pain. As this got worse over maybe four years I saw four or five doctors, and each concluded that I would someday require surgery. I finally decided to have Amol Saxena do the surgery, which was primarily a bone graft to replace some apparently dead bone. I am amazed at the job done by Dr. Saxena. I had very little pain after surgery, and my physical therapist marvels at the progress of my ankle as I recover. It appears to me that he did an absolutely outstanding job and based on this, if you conclude that you must have surgery on a foot or ankle, I highly recommend him. Having said all that, here are some additional thoughts based on my experience: 1. Get a second opinion before opting for surgery, to ensure you really need it and to ensure that it's the appropriate procedure. 2. Dr. Saxena's staff sort of dropped the ball on scheduling my surgery, so stay on them to ensure they don't let you get lost in the shuffle. 3. I had other issues which could have been avoided. I twisted my knee as I didn't know how to use crutches, and I wish I would have watched some youtube videos on this at the start. I also sat in bed too long without moving, which caused some other problems. So if you're largely stuck in bed, be sure to change position at least once an hour! read more

Be careful. Many years ago I went to see Dr Saxena with unresolved pain and swelling in my Achilles tendon. He was ready to book me for surgery. I found out later that there was no structural change needed; I had a systemic, autoimmune related inflammatory arthritis. Surgery would have been 100% unnecessary and likely would have caused more problems in the already inflamed area. He has probably improved his diagnostic capabilities since then, but this is a warning to anyone experiencing mysterious pain and inflammation not to rush into surgery. It could be autoimmune related and you need to check it out with your primary care doc and possibly a rheumatologist. read more

I went to Dr. Saxena after seeing multiple other ankle specialists regarding my torn ATFL. This was the third time I tore it and have already had 2 ankle reconstructive surgeries. I was tired of getting brushed off and getting the run around from other doctors. Dr. Saxena listened to my concerns and told me what the best route would be for fixing/recovering and preventing this from happening again. He did surgery on me in August and the healing process has been great. I am very, very happy with my decision of going to see Dr. Saxena. He is attentive, takes your concerns seriously, and really takes the time to explain things. He wants his patients to be able to get back to what they were doing before injuries, such as running, weight-lifting, etc. Don't let the reviews scare you, give him a chance! After seeing two other podiatrists and one orthopedic surgeon, MRIs, X-rays, etc - I was told I have plantar fasciitis - and to stretch. I'm a dancer - Ive stretched every day of my life. I knew there was more to this injury. I was in such acute pain, at times I would cry when I walked from the pain. Dr. Saxena looked at the same test results as the other doctors and immediately noticed the inflamed nerve just above my ankle. Radiologist and doctors all missed it. He recommended PT and that was successful. He doesn't miss a thing. He is a man of few words - a bit awkward - but he cares and he is thorough. Also referred me to Physiatrist as was suspicious some foot pain may be coming from spinal impingement. He does often have a medical student/fellowship Dr. working with him. I'm happy to have two doctors for the price of one. I'm now struggling with Plantar Fasciitis and toe pain in the opposite foot. He performed a bunionectomy and cleaning out of the joint. I can wear shoes again! I recovered very well, but 9 months later, I'm now having some new foot problems. He pointed out a small bone spur in my toe which could be putting pressure on a nerve. (His eyes don't miss a thing on X-rays/MRIs. ). It's frustrating - limiting - but he is working hard to help me recover. He's suggesting hyaluronic acid injections for the toe pain. And I'll do more PT and probably shock wave therapy for the heel. side note - Dr. Saxena does not push custom orthotics. He indicates studies show that whatever makes our feet feel better, is the best orthotic. read more

I went to see Dr Saxena based on a recommendation; but after my visit I felt compelled to write a review on him. He is extremely arrogant, ill-mannered, quite obnoxious, rude and crude. He was insisting and actually recommending to operate on my foot and then saying it may help it or it may not! It felt like he is trying to create a case for an operation that is not a source of pain and claiming reimbursement from insurance. I have never encountered a medical professional as detached and unapologetically greed-motivated as Dr. Amol Saxena. I saw that he had worked on several high profile runners and triathletes, so I was prepared to be thrilled and amazed by his proficiency. But his interaction was rushed and cold and he didn't listen to what I had to say. I elected to take a chance on a $400 procedure (not covered by insurance) that took 15 minutes of his time and he complained in front of me that PAMF charges less for this procedure than anywhere else in the country, even though we have the highest cost of living here. I found this insensitive and insulting. It is disrespectful to whine in the presence of clients about the fact that you are not taking enough of their money (especially when that fee equates to a rate of over $1,000 per hour). Despite the fact that I asked him point blank if any additional appointments were required and if the $400 covered everything (he lied and told me "No, the $400 is all inclusive"), I was rudely surprised by an additional bill two months later for "Office Visit," because apparently "all inclusive" means the fee covers everything about the procedure except for my actual presence in the office in order to receive it - that part costs extra. This is probably a clever way to scam additional money out of the insurance companies, but since Dr. Saxena is not in my network, this double dip came right back to me. I was also put off by his comment that Relay Run events are guaranteed to produce injury because "You just can't prepare for that kind of mileage." Excuse me? Perhaps he was lost in a daydream when I told him: A.) As a professional triathlete, I train for - and successfully compete in - long distance events on a regular basis B.) As an endurance coach I've been training other people for high mileage events for a decade, so my career is rather dependent on the fact that preparation is both possible and effective C.) The relay race in question required a small fraction of my running capability, just 3 segments of 3 miles each. (p.s. I predictably survived those 9 miles just fine). I was foolish to trust the endorsements of a handful of famous athletes regarding Dr. Saxena's treatment of patients. After speaking with fellow teammates and colleagues locally I came to realize that my experience with him was not unique, and many others had encountered the same apathetic attitude and recommendations for the costliest procedures and solutions. Dr Saxena is an excellent surgeon with deep knowledge of his subject matter and is able to instill in patients a sense of confidence in the treatment. He has successfully operated on two family members so far and we trust him to give measured analytical medical advice. When our youngest needed surgery, we didn't hesitate because we knew she is in safe hands with Dr S. One thing I really appreciate is that despite his many commitments, we have never had to wait a long time as we have at other medical offices. The office is run very well so while you are waiting for him, you are taken for X-rays and to see his other care staff- every appointment runs like a well oiled machine. read more

Dr. Saxena was the only doctor I got an opinion from that did not want to fuse my big toe joint. It was so stiff I could barely move it, but I did not want a fusion as I am an avid dancer. He said he could clean up the joint and that is what he did in February of 2015. The toe joint feels great! I have as much flexibility as I do in the other toe and I dance three times a week! I have run 8 marathons, 30 + half Marathon and countless trail runs. This story has a happy ending for me and I owe the last ten years of my successful and happy running life to Amol Saxena, DPM PAMF. Thank you Dr. Saxena. I have put over 15,000 running miles on my repaired Achilles since Dr. Saxena repaired it 10 years ago. I have referred over 10 people to Dr. Saxena all who are thankful that I sent them to him. My best buddy is getting help from Dr. Saxena right now. I finished the 2006 Boston Marathon about 5 minutes off pace at 3:03 net time. I had injured my Achilles at mile 22(not known at the time) but managed to finish the race. Went for a recovery run a couple of days later and had trouble running down to the end of the Block. Living in Needham, MA at the time. I called my doctor at Mass General. Their recommendation was to avoid running for 6 months to a year....? WHAT! Got networked by friends over to Brigham and Womens - Result was first we want to immobilize - the boot and then we can go from there. You're looking at 1 year. Huh. At least B&W did mention a Dr. out west (Amol Saxena) that had a practice focused on foot/ankle. I called a couple of friends that either ran with the local track team or went to college out in California - all said the same thing. Dr. Saxena is the guy. He operates on all the local college athletes and elite runners. Go see him. Depressed at the time, I called Amol. He called me back and we had a chat. "I operate on Athletes that want to run." That was encouraging. He asked me to get an X-Ray and send the MRI's. He told me the risks and outlined the recovery period. 2-3 months of PT and Recovery and depending on your health - a year for full recovery. You will be on crutches and have a boot on your foot (immobilized) ..its going to be tough. I flew from Boston to Palo Alto. Dr. Saxena evaluated me, I met with his staff and had a successful Achilles surgery. Dr. Saxena met me at 7:00 a.m. two days later to change the dressing on my sutures prior to me getting back on the plane to fly back to Boston. Amol was exactly right. I couldn't put much weight on during the first couple of months and was miserable but the rest is history. I won my age group in the Lucille Packard 10-k this year (2017) and just finished my second hood to coast. Thanks Amol!!! read more

I have had a similar experience to the previous writer (although his nurse - who is actually not a nurse, and is a medical asst, has been much nicer to me after i left one appt in tears). I have been seeing this doctor for 8 months now, after a botched surgery from another doctor. His bedside manner is really poor. He was completely unempathetic, never really gave me any answers and never really believed I was still having pain. His answer was "well, the PT says your ankle is stable, so the pain is probably more in your head than anything else". He finally ordered a bone scan and MRI which showed serious osteoarthritis and possible infection. Right, all in my head. That said, I don't doubt he is a talented surgeon and academic. But if he makes his patients feel as awful as he made me feel, he should stick to academics. read more

I don't doubt that Dr. Saxena is a talented surgeon, but I do agree that he has a very different approach towards different people. I saw the Jekyll / Hyde personality, and it was a rude awakening. My first visit with him was great. He was patient, provided thoughtful explanations, touched and examined my foot, and seemed to have a great bedside manner. On my second visit, he seemed like he could care less. I couldn't get more than a few words out of him, he was extremely awkward with his answers and he directed me to his website. He also barely looked at my foot and made a few awkward comments about taping. In addition, he pointed me to his website for the rest of the questions. While I had caught up on my reading on his site, I was hoping that he would provide more value based on my condition that would be valued at the price that he was charging. I had a friend in the room who was just as shocked about this treatment as I was. His nurse / assistant was quite rude during both visits. While examining my foot during the initial visit, I asked him a few questions and he was initially polite until he rudely dismissed me saying, "I don't know. I am not a doctor". There are many ways to express that -- gently and politely was not one of those. During the second visit, he once again pre-examined me. At that point, I was reluctant to ask him questions because he rightly pointed out that he is not able to answer them. Bottom line-- while Saxena has some great marketing, seems to be connected to high-level athletes and has done plenty of research, I would spend the time looking for a doctor who has both -- a high level of expertise and great beside manner. Both are critical in ensuring that you have the optimal treatment for a great result. read more

Saxena operated on my foot for a painful bunion ten years ago. At least, I think he did. I'll never know if it was him or some young intern introduced to me as we went into surgery. The surgery was a disaster. The toe did not heal, Saxena was on holiday after the surgery and would not speak with me. Despite weeks of calling to say I wondered if I did not have an infection, his office refused to schedule a visit. An ER doc finally saw the toe and called Saxena to tell him it was infected. Saxena did not agree--said it was normal, due to his advanced procedure. I went to PT. The PT took one look and said she could not treat me as the foot was infected. I saw another MD. I was treated for MRSA. I believe Saxena kept stalling in order to run out the clock on malpractice. He kept telling me it would take time and pt to regain function. I ended up having revision surgery twice with the second MD after he told me I had been living with and walking on a broken foot. Please do not have surgery with Saxena: the butcher of Palo Alto. read more

I started seeing Dr Saxena as a "2nd opinion" back in Summer 2012 for a running injury (I'm a marathoner). I had had no resolution from the work by another doctor to "rest it" and take meds (that caused a stomach ulcer). He read my chart, noted that I shouldn't be on the meds I was prescribed because I had a history of ulcers (hello...it was in the chart and he's the first who asked/caught it). He looked at my MRI and it showed low level plantar, which others also missed. He showed it to me and explained how he knew it was plantar. Treatment helped and I ended up with a special treatment (that insurance didn't cover but allowed me to run the Chicago Marathon a month later). A month after that, we realized the plantar treatment flared up another foot issue and I made sure he was my surgeon for a neuroma removal. I always found his bedside manner to be pleasant and positive, his staff to be very friendly and respectable, and his knowledge to be top notch. I always ask for doctors who are athletes, specifically if I a being seen for a running related issue. I believe they have the mindset that applies to athletes. If they tell me I need to rest, then that really is the issue. Saxena is an athlete, he understands the mentality of athletes, and he is honest and forthcoming. I'd highly recommend him to any runner or other patient looking for a skilled doctor. read more

About 10 years ago I had chronic achilles tendinosis and Dr. Saxena performed his achilles tendon "cleaning" surgery. This is the procedure that he claimed to have a 100% rate with patients. The procedure definitely did not work for me and I still battle tendonosis/paratendonitis to this day. The area where he did the procedure is still grossly swollen and disfigured with scar tissue. It was not a success for me. I tried calling his office to give them feedback, but they did not seem too interested. He was pleasant, and as a runner I could tell he was very vested in his job, but the procedure for me was not a success. read more

Dr. Saxena did not one achilles operation, but he did both of mine about a year apart. I have had achilles pain since I was a child and fell from a 2nd story on them, but I went on to be a Division 1 long distance runner although my achilles finally got so bad I quit in my last year and went back to playing ice hockey. The achilles kept degenerating and hurt more and more and I finally got a slight tear in one. The funny thing is I had seen Dr. Saxena about 4 years earlier and he had suggested surgery, but I decided to play hockey instead. Now, when I went in, he didn't want to do surgery, but wanted to go back to ultrasound saying he really didn't do many of these surgeries much anymore, but I had had plenty of ultrasound that didn't work so I insisted on surgery and he was willing. It was 100% successful. He abraded off the scar tissue and fixed the minor tear. When I went in for the 2nd one, he agreed to surgery immediately and it was the same thing, abrade off the scar tissue and repaired a minor tear. This was all back in 2014/2015, and I've done some running, but last month, I did my first race in over 20 years (a 5k with some girls I coach). The achilles did great and didn't bother me while racing. Dr. Saxena has also seen my daughter for severe shin splints that would not go away. We tried inserts and when that didn't help, he had her get a blood draw to check her vitamin D levels (she is darker skinner and he said, like himself, darker skinned people have more trouble absorbing sunlight and producing vitamin D). He was correct, her vitamin D levels were low and she started taking vitamin D supplements and now her shin splints are gone. read more

Dr Saxena has treated lots of famous athletes, but fit me, a 60 year old weekend athlete, in for Achilles/ heel spur surgery. He diagnosed the issue in the first visit and was accurate about the recovery time. A year later I'm pain free (at least in my heel) and much better than before the surgery. read more

As many here point out, he's anything but warm and fuzzy, but he's an excellent surgeon if that's what you need. I appreciated the information he gives patients before surgery and also that--unlike so many production-line surgeons esp in Podiatry--Saxena can readily give you both his and national success rates for different procedures. I read the reviews before scheduling my appt but of course thought Dr Saxena would be able to help me. He came highly recommended and that was enough for me. I am athletic, willing to try anything to improve etc. Easy to help or so I thought. Hah what was I thinking. Once Saxena saw my x-rays he told me my ankle had fused on its own and there was nothing he could do. Just stared at me in silence to get my reaction. So what does that mean, thinking I will be provided some suggestions to manage the pain. Nope - it meant the meeting was over. Saxena didn't offer orthotics, he didn't offer pain killers - in fact, he offered nothing at all except to suggest the usual over the counters and laughed and said try CBD oil or glucosamine. I asked for something that would mask the pain so I can walk around without agony. But Nada, Niente Nothing. It was all Saxena could do to get me out of the office. Being a doctor is not just about fixing someone - it is also about having some compassion and providing some words of encouragement even if there is none to be had. Saxena has Zero personality and even less bedside manner and could have cared less. However all was not lost. I did leave w/something. A note to send to the DMV so I can get a handicapped plaque. Perhaps I am mistaken but a doctor's job is to come up with suggestions/solutions. Reading back over the reviews it appears Saxena fixes things like achilles, tendons, cleans joints etc. Clearly not anything too critical or major. FYI I still hike 5 miles a day and no, I don't use the handicap sticker. Thanks for nothing Dr Saxena. You fail! read more

I took my son to Dr. Saxena following a ruptured achilles tendon. He is an elite level athlete with college opportunities slipping with every week off field. BUT walking the rest of his life without a limp is most important! I found Dr. Saxena confident in his diagnosis and matter of fact in his prognosis. It was in his bio online with Palo Alto Medical Foundation that he specialized in Achilles work. So though he was the only Dr. available for consult Friday morning, I believe he was the right doctor. He came in before his scheduled surgeries to meet with us. We raced to get there so we would not be the cause of a "late" doctor. He did not rush through his exam. He spoke to my son, directly! He understood that as a junior in high school he was lookng at college and asked which ones. I booked my son's surgery for the following Tuesday. As an anxious mom, I sought a second opinion from a highly regarded orthopedist. He was wonderful too. Nice. But no more conversational than Dr. Saxena. In the end, we opted for the surgeon that performs 3-4 of these operations per week rather than the one that does 3-4 every couple of months. The pre-op meeting left me totally confident in the hands to which we had placed our son. Our post op appt was today, Dr Saxena asked a little more about my son and continued to form a relationship. I believe that he is interested in my son and he is invested in his progression through this injury and healing process. I would recommend Dr. Saxena to patients who realize their injury will take more than one appointment to solve (if they can get through it in one appt -boy are you lucky!) He is very interested in the healing process. I did my research based on his body of work, not my stressed out first meeting, although I left the office totally confident in my choice and really only sought a second opinion I could not answer questions that well meaning friends had asked. I understand the stress people are under when faced with physical challenges and would encourage you to do your research and select your medical care provider based on their experience, specialty and if you can discover it, their personal passion for the procedure you are about to undertake. By the way, I too feel it matters little what your feet look like as long as you can put one in front of the other! Scars are just another story to tell. PS-I really liked his assistant...she did everything I asked of her, changed pharmacy for prescriptions, sent attendance letter to son's school...did you ask anything of her? I have to echo the concerns posted by others here. I went to Dr Saxena because of his reputation for care of high level athletes. During my visit, he seemed to automate a script without listening to my concerns. I could honesty get past the bedside manner - it was just one visit after all- but the office management was subsequently unpardonable. When I called with questions regarding surgery- scheduling, cost, etc- I was sent to multiple different individuals who told me they either couldn't answer my questions or someone would call me back. The only calls I received were from the billing department to collect on my bill. No one returned messages I left with his office. Perhaps if you are an Olympic athlete you'll have a different experience but there a number of other fellowship trained foot and ankle surgeons in the area I would recommend for the rest of us. read more

Given my experience I would not recommend this doctor. After an initial ankle surgery with him which improved my condition very little, I continued to return to him expressing pain and discomfort repeatedly over the course of years. He didn't really give further insight as to what the problem was and so I was hobbled for many years. He was dismissive and didn't seem interested in further investigating the problems my ankle had, only in recommending orthotics which did not help. I have since gone to a new doctor who immediately performed surgery to address multiple issues, the same issues that I was expressing verbally to Dr. Saxena for years. Dr. Saxena was either not recognizing the problems in the multiple Xray's/MRI's or just didn't care to tell me. I only wish I moved on to a different doctor much sooner. read more

I had the same experience as many of the folks here pointed out. Barely answered questions - 2 word answers. Even after probing no idea what next steps are or what he recommends. Seemed entirely disinterested the whole time. Said the first time I saw him that x-rays were needed - I took the time to bring in my old ones and he barely looked at them. I left frustrated and angry at time spent. (had to go 2x b/c office never called me the first time telling me xrays were needed.) Zero bedside manner. He was awkward and hesitant to recommend treatment - deferring in the hope hat I would go away. Meanwhile, he was quick to point out a paper he had written on the topic (tarsal implants) but yet knew nothing of them? He was inconsistent in his answers on the 2 separate trips I did see him. He seems like more of an academic and someone interested in being known as the "pro-athlete go to guy" than an actual doctor. Utterly useless. Oh - and my last trip the office he stormed out (I just remembered this - must of blocked it out in my original review) muttering something about not billing my insurance company - when I complained that not being notified to bring x-rays resulted in an extra office visit (which they billed my insurance an insane amount for). Right.... b/c wasting 2-4 hours in the middle of the day b/c of their error doesn't cost me anything. Very unprofessional. I have since been under the care of another PAMF podiatrist who is the 180 of this guy - diagnosed me immediately - and has a sincere desire to help his patients. When I mentioned my experience with Saxena to him, it became apparent that his demeanor is no secret internally. I am super thankful Saxena was so annoying, and consider it an absolute blessing I never got any kind surgery with him. He should not be allowed to perform patient care. read more

Didnt spend any time with me and barely examined my feet. I felt like you need to be an olympic athlete to get his attention. I just met with another doctor who actually examined my feet and arrived at a substantive prognosis. My wife independently had the same views of Saxena. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Saxena's for nearly twenty years. I first went to him with a navicular fracture in my foot from racing indoor track in 1994. While other doctors told me to be non-weight-bearing for a year for this injury to heal, Dr. Saxena recommended immediate surgery. There is no doubt in my mind he 100% made the right call, as the bone had shown signs of necrosis and I likely would have had trouble walking the rest of my life without surgery. I've since climbed many mountains, run two marathons, and competed in numerous triathlons including an ironman. I am very grateful that Dr. Saxena has made this possible for me. He was a very young doctor back then, but so dedicated to solving individual cases and uniquely intuitive with his decision-making. Some people here are saying things like 'he doesn't care' which brought me to write this review. Maybe you don't see or feel that he cares, but I can assure you that he does very much. He doesn't waste time talking about personal stuff, he is too focused on figuring out your injury. This is the kind of doctor you want! Leave it up to him, trust his decision, and you are making a good choice. I have since been to him for a second surgery - removal of a ganglion cyst and removal of some bone chips from the initial surgery which was 18 years ago. Podiatrists at Kaiser would not treat me, and said I had arthritis (which is partially true, but was not the issue) and to just live with the cyst as it was not life-threatening. Dr. Saxena saw me for 5 minutes and knew what was wrong (bone chip). It was worth going out of network and paying for Dr. Saxena to treat me. After a month of recovery, I was back on my feet again. On another occasion, I saw him for pain on the bottom of my foot. He diagnosed me with inflammation of the sesamoid bones, put a little pad on the bottom of my orthotic, and the problem was solved. He has also done my custom orthotics which I wear running and hiking. I'm about to go back for a second pair (again, out of pocket and worth every penny). Reviewers: do not take people seriously here who say 'this guy does not listen or does not care' - that says more about the reviewer than Dr. Saxena. read more

I am shocked at some of the above experiences! I couldn't be happier to have such a great doctor! I've been seeing Dr. Saxena for several months now. He is a fantastic doctor. He found the source of my pain in one visit. He was thorough: xrays, MRI, and a bone scan. He's answered all my questions, and I've never felt rushed. I had my much needed surgery a few weeks later. Everything he's told me to expect is exactly what I am experiencing. There's been no surprises. I never wait to see him more than 4-5 minutes- NEVER. I always find parking on site. The staff has been excellent as well. He's had me in physical therapy as well as giving me exercises to do at home on my own. I am thrilled that my insurance covers this as I would not want to go anywhere else. read more
