The Antioch stop is the end of the North Central Line which goes to/from Union Station…read more The train station for the Antioch stop on the METRA commuter rail North Central Line (NCS) is about average compared to other stations in the Chicago Commuter Rail system. It is a well lit, enclosed shelter with some wooden seats for inclement weather with a few uncovered benches outside. There are rest rooms but no ATM, ticket office, or vending inside. There is a guide to local Antioch businesses posted on the wall. There is no air conditioning in the station during summer and no way that I saw to open windows for fresh air. There is a large commuter lot with adequate parking adjoining the station; parking is $1.50 per day, cash only. North of the station there is a strip mall with, among other businesses, a tavern. There is a small bicycle rack to the west of the station. There are no bicycle shelters available and it is suggested that you bring your own lock/security device when using the racks. There is also a coin operated phone and newspaper vending on the west side of the station. It has a large parking lot and both a side platform and an island platform. Parking: parking is primarily daily. There is a number to call if you want your car to stay overnight. If longer, find someone to drop you off. There is nothing near this station except farms and open space (where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain). During a workday, there are spaces in the lot, but they are near the front or away from the station. There is a payment station for parking near the steps. Station: Nothing to write home about. It is adequate for waiting and getting on the train. No Cafe Latte stands or even a set of bathrooms for that matter. Note that some of trains, earlier ones at least, stop near the island platform. For that, you need to go through the tunnel and up. Read the train schedules and notices on the walls near each of the two side platforms stairs. Note also that some of the trains do not stop here but blow on through. There is no attendant. You purchase your ticket onboard. I live a few miles away. This was perfect for getting into Chicago for a week long trip.

Harvard Metra is a small station that's easy to get to if you want to take the train in to Chicago…read moreinstead of driving. It's small but offers a fair amount of parking, including overnight parking in the far lot. Off-street parking is only $2 a day and payable at machines near the station. On our last visit, only one machine was working, which caused the line to backup when the train was already waiting in the station. There's not always a ticket agent on duty (if not, you can buy yours on the train), but in my experience the building has been open if you need the restroom. There's also a small coffee stand if you want to grab a beverage on your way to the city. The station is pretty small, so if you arrive early I'd recommend either hanging out in your car or walking over a couple blocks to the shops if they're open. Bring cash because you'll need it if you have to buy your ticket onboard.

The station itself is small, not a lot of room inside. If taking the train during winter months, you'll most likely want to wait in your car until the train arrives. There is plenty of parking and it's a very reasonable price. The train tickets are very reasonable, as well. I've never had a late train or any issues what-so-ever. This is commuter train line. That's one thing to keep in mind if you decide to take this down. It will stop. Over and over and over again. But even with the stops you make good time, and it's WAY less stressful than making the drive yourself!

It would be great if they extended it to DeKalb; there's already a station built here in town. However, they won't for several reasons: 1. They would have to extend the third rail from Elburn to DeKalb, and they would have to raise taxes quite a bit to do that and pay Metra to come out here. 2. Metra does not want to go outside the 3-county Chicago area(Cook, Lake and Kane) 3. they moved 1/2 of Cabrini Green to DeKalb when it was closed, which caused us to have quite a bit of crime and drugs out here. DeKalb doesn't want or need any more of that. We have shootings and stuff quite often. So, they made a good compromise by making a bus route that goes to the station and back several times per day, It has been quite a blessing to have that bus, but it needs to run more often!

This would be my second round-trip on the Southwest Chief. It was a stressless trip, thanks to the amazing, friendly, and helpful Amtrak employees. What makes the trip even more of an experience is that Galesburg, IL, is the perfect place to explore. Within walking distance is the picturesque downtown district with quality restaurants, quaint gift shops, and an independent bookstore. Take time to explore!

That said, unless you're coming from the east, you should really be using this station. I value the Crystal Lake station for several reasons: * Ample parking spaces, whether adjacent or right across Main Street * Convenient automated payment options: cash, credit, or commuter card * It has an agent who can answer all your questions and sell you the ticket you actually need (plus you pay less if you buy from the agent) * It's close to the end of the line, which means more seat availability inbound to Chicago * It has several convenient scheduling options to and from Chicago * And lastly, there are two coffee shops within 50 feet of the station: Trax, which is in the station itself, and Grounds Coffee Bar, which is immediately north of the station One other note is that the conductors who run these lines have been really friendly, and I have really been on every train in the morning from the 606-636, and outbound from 625-663. If you've been a loyal Pingree user, or if you're thinking about commuting, you should definitely try the Crystal Lake station!
