Amtrak gave numerous delays without reason both on and off the train. Was not home until passed 4am. There were almost no updates, complete confusion and disorganization when we did board, and though they offered a rebook/cancel: if you tried to take them up on it, the link took you to a page requiring you to call a 1(800) number. The fact that we were SO late, with the company holding almost no responsibility, offering no actual solutions, and most of us were in a different state made the end of the trip miserable. When traveling to Chicago we opted to go by train. This was my first train ride. We had to navigate up flights of stairs when preparing to board the train which proved quite difficult in the crowd with bulky luggage without assistance. A fellow passenger was kind enough to assist me as it was quite apparent that I was struggling. Once boarded, I was able to relax and read. The ride was very tranquil. read more

My first time taking Amtrak, I didn't know what to expect. My cabbie told me that if I was looking for a way home in bad weather and flights are being cancelled, taking the train is the next best thing. The Amtrak station is about 25 minutes from DTW airport. I walked inside and the ticket counter was still opened 20 minutes before the last train was scheduled to depart. There were a few people waiting in the lobby and no lines at the ticket counter. $58 for a ticket from Detroit to Chicago, takes a little over 5 hours. The key to the restrooms are on the table by the wall opposite of the entrance. They make an announcement when the train is about to arrive and every file on up the stairs to board the train. The seats on the train are pretty comfortable. The train rocked sideways a bit and I got a little motion sickness from trying to read (as I do in a car, but not as bad). The restrooms on the train are decent. There's a water station with small cups in some of the cars. There's a cafe cart on the lower level towards the front of the train that sells snacks and beverages (including beer and wine). read more

It's a train station, what can I say. It serves its purpose without any add'l frills whatsoever. It would be nice if there were wifi, especially considering that it's near wsu. The staff behind the counter was pretty abrupt. I walked up with my ticket in hand that I had printed from home and before I could ask what I wanted to ask her she blurts "that's your ticket!", no greeting or asking me what it was she could help me with. Expect two flights of stairs to the train or waiting for a very tiny elevator. I didn't hear any formal announcement for my train. When it became close to departure time, people just began lining up and eventually the security guard opened the doors to the loading area without a word. Once we were in the loading area he muttered which side we should stand on depending on our destination. Organization/professionalism could definitely stand to improve. It was fairly decent inside. I wouldn't call it a grimy place, but certainly not a spot to comfortably kick back and relax as you wait for the train. And that was that :-/ Eh, it's a train station... read more

While traveling from New York to Detroit on 12th October, 2022 I lost 2 luggage bags that were checked in at the new york amtrak station. I have my very important documents in the bags. I checked in my bags in New York and was supposed to receive my bags in Detroit which was written on my baggage claim sticker too. But unfortunately, I could not get them because in Detroit they said, they have no system of checking out the bags in Detroit and should have been checked out at Toledo where I was transferred to a bus as part of an amtrak transport. I filed a complaint at Toledo and I have been talking to various places of Amtrak station but I have no clue about my bags and I am very worried. I would appreciate any kind of help. read more

The little train station that could. Detroit's Amtrak station is pretty no-frills but it gets the job done. I've now made 2 departures from here and arrived 3 times. (In 2007 I drove down to New Orleans with a friend who moved there but was back in town and took the Amtrak back.) I've never had any problems. It's a small station, one that looks like it belongs in a much smaller municipality than the Motor City, but there it is nestled next to Woodward, barely more than a stone's throw from the Fisher building and the other large edifices of New Center. No food, which is kind of a bummer as Toledo has a Subway, Orlando has a food cart and Chicago and DC have sprawling stations with a mall's food court worth of options. There is a White Castle across the street, but I know those sliders, chicken rings and things aren't for everybody. Even me, I have to be in the right mood for it. And right behind the White Castle the bones of a new, larger Amtrak station are rising. So maybe train travel is on the come up in Motown. They do have a TV, though on the February night when I left out for Florida it was showing the depressingness that was Trump's SOTU address. Fortunately, my bus was on time. (Amtrak has no line due south so it was either bus to Toledo or go all the way west to Chicago to go south! Crazy, right?) The bus was pretty comfy, though, even though this is a review for the station and not that. Maybe it's just hometown bias and a love for train travel but I like this place. read more

This is one of the smaller Amtrak Stations I have seen it was clean and comfortable. The female working at the counter was friendly and the security guard was helpful in answering questions about parking. The bathrooms are locked so you must use a key and they do not have a baggage claim. read more

This station has the nicest Amtrak employees I have EVER met. I take the train a lot (hey, did you know that it is in fact possible to commute from Detroit to Ann Arbor by Amtrak? You can buy your tickets in books and get a discount) and they are always so friendly and accomodating here. The station itself, as Lauren has noted, is pretty dirty. The bathroom, oh my! I thought I was going to pass out. How is that kind of mess even possible? I mean, come on, you pee in the toilet, right? Not three feet away! So, skip the bathroom, and also, skip arriving so early for your train. 20 minutes beforehand is plenty. Make it a little earlier if you have to pick up your ticket from the station aagent, because they leave the office windows closed for a bit before the train arrives and while the train is in station. There's a white castle across the street if you need food for your journey. read more

A throwback train station... When my Uber driver dropped me off, I wasn't convinced if this was an Amtrak Station at all. I've been to Penn (NY) and Union (DC), and they were sizable, noisy, dirty and industrial. Detroit's station looks like a small town bus station, a very small one. It's like comparing Costco to a Dollar Tree. My image of Detroit the city definitely did not fit the look and feel of this place. This station is pretty much a means to an end. It's more convenient to train it sometimes to visit the folks as opposed to driving. If I could avoid going to this station though I would. I'm not an overall fan mostly due to the rude staff. I had a wannabe security cop berate me because my sister stopped in front of the station for me to unload my bags from the trunk. She was dropping me off and then taking off. As I said my goodbyes and was making my way into the station, he stated there was 'no standing'. I tried to explain that I needed to get my bags out but he didn't want to hear it. Then there have been several times I attempted to use the kiosk to get a printed ticket and either the wannabe or the attendant behind the mirror will shout towards me for using it. Wannabe last time said that it's not an ATM. Well duh. Why even have the kiosk there if nobody can use it? The parking lot is really tiny too and always seemed packed. I wouldn't trust my car parked there long-term. The restroom also needs some major TLC the few times I was able to convince the attendant to give me a key to use it. Thankfully I only use the station a few times a year. A few times too many...*LOL*. read more

Amtrak has been good to me and provides cheap and safe transportation across the nation. I've only taken to Amtrak back and forth to Chicago and I am extremely happy with my experience. The trains are clean, have nice wide seats and power outlets (make sure they work before you pick a seat). The trains are usually packed on the weekend but during the week you have tons of room and can often take over 2 seats and rest like a king. My only complaint lies with the station. For being a metropolitan city the Amtrak stations SUCK. This particular station is relatively small, grimey looking with one of two customer service reps and a security guard. I don't think the ever answer their phones here ...so I suggest calling the toll free number for info. The parking lot outside is really small and I doubt I would park my car there over night. There is also a coalition of bums/crackheads outside (that being the negative), however, if your looking to find a cab at midnight - .50 cents to the crackhead and he will find you one (definitely a positive aspect). I enjoyed riding Amtrak. It has been awhile. I like the fact that I can take my pet, but the dimensions on the carrier is wrong not everyone follows it. I seen carriers larger than mine and their pet was comfortable. My cat had to stay crouched down the whole time. I wasn't traveling far but far enough. I will get her a comfortable cage and upgrade my ride so both of us are comfortable. My ride back to Chicago was great, I had room to stretch my legs. I will travel again by Amtrak. read more

The employees from Detroit area really had given me a terrible experience. Not helpful at all regarding the explanation of how to proceed with the baggage and disrespectful when I asked a question about the weight, where to put it, etc. in front of other passengers. I'm living here in the US for about a year and really this was the worst treatment I had ever received. Unfortunately that happened in my farewell to my parents, which came from Brazil to visit me for the first time... really disappointing. First time on Amtrak, first time taking a train in the USA. I took it from Detroit to Chicago. 1. On time! 2. I upgraded to business class with hopes there would be less children and more room to spread out. That was needed as I had work to do on the train. Mission accomplished. The upgrade was a pretty minimal price increase. 3. Station was clean and safe and easy, I was there 30 minutes in advance but only needed to be there 10 minutes. 4. Available food choice was not the best. It was sort of like a concession stand but I was thankful they had food, unlike the airlines. The business class section is right by the food and had earlier access to it. 5. Service with a smile at every point! 6. A little slow getting into Chicago causing 15 minute delay. Not a big deal 7. Seats were comfortable and roomy, but was freezing heading to Chicago and sweating coming home. One of the seats was wobbly and vibrated so I moved and it was fine in the new seat. Overall, Amtrak was great, I had a great first experience on the train. It was cheaper and better than air travel, the times worked for me as well. For the Detroit-Chicago run, this is definitely how I will be going from now on. However I say this saying that Amtrak is as good as it likely is able to be right now. Via Rail in Canada was a definite step up and if you compare to the Business Class and even economy they enjoy in Europe, Amtrak can not even compete. So yes, for the value, it was great, a great trip overall given the means in which they operate in the USA in general. read more

I recently used this Amtrak Station in Detroit during the holidays. It is great. The station is clean, the employees polite and helpful, the bathrooms are spotless. I was taking the Wolverine train back to Chicago. As usual, I had to much luggage. The train boarding staff saw me struggling and came to the rescue! - LOL!. One male conductor said "you shouldn't be trying to pick up that heavy suitcase, grabbed it of my hand and put it securely on the train (awwww yes, chivalry is not dead). The train ride was great, saw some beautiful snowy, winter scenes along the way, almost like a Norman Rockwell picture book. And guess what? Nobody got removed from the train and put off in the middle of nowhere for breaking the rules. - LOL! read more

First time taking Amtrak to Detroit but definitely not the last time. Amtrak late as usual. Taxi's readily available in front of station. Short ride to hotel downtown. Upon return to train station to head home I was greeted by security agent and the Amtrak staff member. I already had my ticket so he double checked my name and said he would get me to take me to the train and told me which way to go to get on train when we got upstairs to enter train. Waiting area was spotless. There was a television to watch while waiting. Station I leave from never has anyone greeting you or providing assistance so this station was a very pleasant surprise. read more

The security guard is the reason behind this low ranking review. He told my dad not to stand in front of the television when the tv is mounted on the wall so that others could still see from where he was standing. Very belittling. I'm business class and the perks of that is to board first. I was told to stop. "I guess you didn't hear me the first time when I held my hand up" (his hand motioned for stop). I didn't know why he was telling him to stop. I thought maybe because the elevator was full. I will be calling Amtrak to report him and I will be using the Dearborn Station from now on. read more

The Detroit rail station was not as terrible as I expected, so I'll give it 3 stars. It is surprisingly very small for such a big city. The location is a considerable distance from downtown (about 6k), but is not so terribly far from the campus of Wayne State University and the city's cultural center area. I had hoped to walk from the station to the Detroit Institute of Arts, but chose instead to take a cab the few blocks distance, as the area appeared a bit dodgy. As I said, it is a small station, so there is not much there and I would not want to spend much time there waiting for a train. Fortunately, Amtrak has a good website which allows you to monitor train status directly through your smart phone. Trains are infrequent (6 per day) and there is only one line. Trains running west toward Chicago (3 per day) depart in the early morning, midday, and late afternoon. The 3 daily trains running in the other direction turn north and go only another 50 kilometers, stopping in three of Detroit's northern suburbs, Royal Oak, Birmingham and Pontiac which is the end of the line. The trains I rode were themselves comfortable and not at all crowded. The conductors were polite and helpful. read more

My wife goes to the College for Creative Studies down the street, so I know this general area pretty well. Being a college area (along with WSU and several museums), this area is actually somewhat safe and not completely rotting away. There are places to eat within walking distance, and traffic is light. The train station is a safe place too, because there is a security guard present, even if he appears to be just mulling around or sitting at a desk. This place has no frills or accommodations. There's a place to sit, a staircase to the tracks, and a bland and uninviting ambiance. It's not a place you want to hang out for any lengthy time before your train arrives. It is very small, clean, and efficient. We arrived there at 5:45am, and our train arrived as scheduled at 6:00. There's no security clearances or baggage checks. I thought there would be since it's Detroit. They do have cameras, and the guard on duty makes for a very safe feeling. I was moreover worried about my car sitting in the cramped lot for three days. There's not ample parking either, and I had to park parallel against the neighboring building. The lot can hold maybe 20 cars, and it is under surveillance (but who knows if the cameras are monitored, especially when the station is closed). read more

Amtrak can do better. Yes, this is in the middle of inner city Detroit, but at least clean the place, and have a working TV. That being said, the agent working there was nice, he locked my bags in storage while I ventured a block up the street to Motown Coney Island 6501 Woodward, then Detroit Hardware (do visit, like a step back in time). There is also a White Castle across the street, and a Popeyes Chicken across from the Motown Coney Island. Be careful, this is very much in the middle of urban decline. read more

The Detroit Amtrak station in the new center area is very convenient. It's located on Woodward and Milwaukee right down the street from the q line. It's convenient to Downtown Detroit and the new center area. Fast check-in and boarding at this station is a guarantee. Parking is a little dicey because the taxi cabs seem to show up and take up all the space at the same time as the train show up so it's good to be a little early if you want to get a close parking space by the door. Also no redcaps so be prepared to push that luggage out to your car or taxi. One good spot is that there is food directly across the street from two different angles you've got White Castle on one corner and then you got a time of chicken on the other corner so no problem waiting with food. This station is open 24 hours if there are trains coming that night and it's always warm in the winter. I suggest checking in here if you are leaving out of Detroit because it is convenient and thank you and track for thinking of all of us by putting the station in the new center area where it won't cost us an arm and a leg to park. I boarded the train in Detroit to Chicago, just to help my daughter get her luggage on, and she was traveling alone. Within 3 minutes and no announcement, the doors were locked and they told me I could not off. The employee on the train was extremely rude and didn't seem to care. Had to travel to the next stop and take an Uber back. Will never travel on Amtrack again. They do not care about their passengers. I guess you get what you pay for. read more

This Amtrak station is outdated and to small with only 10 parking spaces in a cramped up lot.You must climb a flight of stairs to the platform or use a mini elevator,the bathrooms are locked it can't handle large amounts of travelers.Detroit needs a new station. read more

This train station doesn't even deserve 1 star. My experience was awful. Upon arriving and attempting to walk up to the platform I was harassed for no good reason. Walking up to the blue doors there were no signs saying to stay in the lobby. Since I had never traveled through this station I had no idea you were not allowed up stairs. It was not marked clearly at all. I walk up stairs and I am immediately followed by their security guard. He came and started yelling at me for going up to the platform, even though it was not marked by a sign. On our way downstairs he was constantly in my ear about going up there and threatened to not let me travel. I go outside to get away from the crowd I was just publicly embarrassed in front of. On my way in I try to ask for his name so I could report this and make sure this won't happen to anyone else. Upon asking his name he would not give it to me and was not wearing a name tag. He then went on to continue to publicly embarrass me by talking with the Amtrak official attempting to not let me travel. There was nothing I could say because I was concerned I would not be allowed to get on the train. This experience was awful and I was harassed for no good reason. I was polite and listened to his orders. I just asked why it was not marked, but asking questions only angered the man named "Mark". I recommend avoiding this station at all costs. Overall my experience was very unpleasant and I will pay the extra 100 dollars to fly instead of dealing with harassment. Not very comforting that they will not give you their names, to me it means there is no accountability for their actions. Hope you don't have to go through what I did! read more
