I dont understand how the NYC Amtrak has low ratings. My main mode of travel from DC to NYC is by amtrak. Cuz their aint no way with gas prices, Im driving. I cant stand buses, and planes... if I can fly for cheap then I would. I usually book my tickets far in advance. My tix each way is usually $31 DC-NYC, Bmore to NYC $21 each way... now let's say last minute (like day before), you can book $19. The trains are clean and no ratchetness. No type of foolishness. The train attendant are nice, and hardly any delays unless it's weather related. However don't get to comfy and fall asleep, watch your belongings. Sometimes you can bump your seats depending on the attendance. The sleeper cabins are nice, bathrooms are clean. I have a better experience with Amtrak on the east coast then going from DC to Chi town. NYC Amtrak waiting area is nice too, way nicer than DCs UNION Station. read more

This is a letter I sent to them: Trip/Event Date: 8/24/2025 Message: I am writing to formally report an incident involving an Amtrak employee whose conduct I found to be rude, dismissive, and inappropriate.On August 24, while traveling on Silver Meteor, I was escorting my elderly mother to a different car to use the single-occupancy bathroom, as the one in our room was uncomfortable for her. As we passed an Amtrak employee and a passenger, the Amtrak employee remarked, You know you have a toilet in your room. I explained, Its a little uncomfortable for my mom, to which she responded, There goes our bathrooms.When we returned from the bathroom, we passed them again, and the passenger said, Why dont you use the bathroom in your room? Then the employee said 'She should have gone to the bathroom before she got on.' These repeated comments felt unnecessary, condescending, and frankly, bullying. I was simply trying to ensure my mothers comfort and dignity, and I felt threatened and judged for doing so.I respectfully request that this incident be reviewed and addressed. I believe all passengers deserve to be treated with courtesy and respect, especially when accommodating the needs of elderly or vulnerable individuals.Thank you for your attention to this matter. We took the Amtrak train from New York city to Philadelphia and we have to say it changed our perception of travel by train 180 degrees. The train seatings are much roomier. Our booking also come with foods and drinks so that is a big plus. There is no long line, no security check, no fighting for the overhead bins ...etc - all the good stuff. read more

:::Update!!! Amtrak saw my review and resolved the matter::: I booked a round-trip ticket about a month ago. I called a few days later to change my return date. I paid an additional fee for the change. Today I checked my reservation on the app to discover there was no departure date, only a return date. I called to clear up the confusion and was faced with a half hour hold time; one that ended with no human contact, only an automated survey asking how my experience was. I called back for a 45 minute hold time. I finally reached a gentleman, explained the situation, he reviewed the account and discovered the error and said he had to transfer me to another department for a resolution. He didn't mention there would be another half hour hold. Finally I reached a Representative who was very nice and it seemed she really wanted to help, but could not. She basically told me that since I didn't catch the error in the email confirmation, the company was in the clear. So, apparently it is my duty to police the Amtrak Reps to be sure they do their jobs properly, which typically I would do, but I have been very busy and trusted she did what she said she would. Also the departure date still appeared in the app until I refreshed my screen today. I find it extremely off-putting that they were completely uncompromising in their obvious error. I tried canceling the trip entirely, but that was out of the question. I am locked in even though the trip is a week and a half away. I was planning to use the service regularly, but they will never see my face again. read more

I bought an Acela ticket in July but Amtrak apparently sold it to another person without notifying me. The conductor on the train was also very rude - humiliating me in front of other passengers even though I did nothing wrong. The Amtrak app had my seat number. When. I asked why she's moving me to a crappy seat with no leg room, she said I should be grateful she got me a seat without charging me extra. Unbelievable service!!! Btw,the seat was at the end of another car.. I had to walk while the train was moving - I almost fell. The seat was also facing the opposite direction - it made me nauseous! read more

Amtrak Acela is crap...the signal problems and issues with the trains cause hour long delays...totally defeats the purpose of a faster train

The idea behind the Auto Train is good. The problem is booking your trip. I booked my trip 4 months before and thought I would get a reasonable fair for a roomette and my standard size car. Little did I know that I got screwed. The price changes like I change my underwear. My wife checked out the prices 45 days after I booked and got a lower price without being a guest reward member. What made me furious was I am a guest reward member. So I called Amtrak and got a really poor answer such as " they do this sometimes " an no they would not chance me price. I may just cancel and just drive to Florida. No crowds, a real bed and no train to catch. Shame on you Amtrak!! read more

Amtrak is renovating their waiting area, only half of waiting room is open. You have to show your ticket or printout if you want to get in this area. We waited about 50 minutes for our turn to go down to train. read more

Amtrak is a joke! My 75 year old mother will spend her first Mother's Day alone because of amtraks pet policy. I wanted to travel from NYC to Lancaster, a three hour trip, with my 9 pound dog to visit my mother for Mother's Day. After purchasing my round trip tickets I checked the pet policy. My dog met all of the requirements but I couldn't figure it out how to register her. Your pet has to be under a certain weight, the trip has to be under 7hours and they have to remain in a bag the whole time. That's fine and totally doable, however trains from NYC to Lancaster PA don't allow pets! After trying to call and text and waiting on hold on the phone for over an hour a very rude agent told me pet's aren't allowed due to no available "pet inventory". What the hell is pet inventory? She couldn't answer. Then she said a pet needs a ticket but there was no available "pet space"! Again, if the dog is in a bag by my feet or on my lap what the hell is pet space? The agent couldn't tell me. Instead she told me there is a connecting train I could take there but there were no trains out of Lancaster that allowed pets! Ummm so I have to take a connecting train before being stranded at my final destination with my pet? None of this made sense. The agent on the phone said "it is what it is" so I asked if that was Amtraks official answer "It is what it is"? She hung up on me. The agent through text was no better, spewing the same fake term "pet space" but was unable to tell me what exactly it was and then transferred me to a closed department so she purposely sent me to a dead end. It was 10am on a Friday, you're Amtrak, what department is closed? Not only is Amtraks pet policy a complete joke that makes no sense and can't be logically explained but their customer service department on text and phone were completely unhelpful, slow to respond, rude, and dismissive. Two hours of effort and no one could explain why a 9 pound dog in a carrier for the entire trip couldn't take the train. Terms like "pet space" isn't a thing unless you're actually providing space for a pet. If the pet is my responsibility the whole time and not allowed out why am I forced to buy it a ticket? You don't charge for a 10 pound bag of socks but if that same bag has a dog in it it's a definitive no with no logical explanation. The bag of socks and the dog bag would sit in the same space and do the same thing so why os no one able to answer questions when asked why? Amtrak get yourself together. If you're going to have restrictions at least have a reason why! Never again, lesson learned! read more

Amtrak is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!! I would give zero stars if I could. A couple months back, they canceled our trip halfway through and REFUSED to refund our money and left us to get to our destination on our own. So not only Did I pay full price for my trip, I had to pay additional transportation to my two hour away destination & received ZERO compensation. Simply unacceptable I will never travel with Amtrak again and I tell everyone not to as well. read more

On a 6 hour ride to boston. I like that there is a water bottle fill station. Its nice that every seat has plenty of outlets. The ride is comfy too, there is enough leg space even for a tall guy like me. On the down side there is a buzzer/ alarm that goes off at random times for undetermined intervals. Sometimes it goes off before a stop, sometimes right after. Occasionally it's a long buzzer, sometimes it's a short buzzer, once it was a really long buzzer. The volume varies too. I can't figure this thing out! It sure does drive me crazy. read more

i am so dissatisfied with amtrak that even 0 stars would be too much! i was recently on train #98, riding from savannah to new york... this was the voyage of the damned! we started out late, but not TOO late, unfortunately, things only went from bad to worse. the passenger who decided to get high, and spilled their cocaine, to boot, caused a delay of more than an hour and necessitated their car to be evacuated, with all those other passengers having to be seated in an already overcrowded train (the passenger was taken into custody, by the police in south carolina) if only it had stopped with that, but the privage car, which was being hauled along, had a short, and then an electrical fire, which melted the connections, and kept shorting out the entire train, the last time 5 miles, or so short of philadelphia. we sat there, in the middle of godforsaken nowhere, for hours,with no power, no air circulating, no food, water, or working toilets, until there was finally a side-by-side emergency evacuation, to another train. being fair, the train crew's actions were exemplary, and the personnel in new york penn station were fantastic! however, the customer relations people have the attitude that treating the public like hostile teamsters is the way to go! when i complained about this situation, i was informed that i was going to either accept a $75 voucher for future train travel (i never want to go near another train again!) or get nothing - this for a situation where if it happened on a plane, the ntsb would be crawling all over their case! also the customer relations person i spoke with tried to equate this situation with his being rerouted, by plane, (and being comped to a hotel stay, as well!) from cancun! the only similarity that exists is that both of us got home much later than anticipated! he was in luxury, and i was in the next thing to a boxcar! read more
