I've always wanted to ride the train, so I decided to book 2 tickets for my husband and I from Omaha to Utah. A 24 hour trip in total. I saw video reviews so I decided to try Coach because of the reclining seats and room they provide. I think it would be great for a day trip but if you are going farther like we did, spend the extra money and get a room. It was pretty tough to sleep in the reclining seats for 24 hours. The nice thing is you can get up and move around the train. We went to the observation car and the café car. We didn't get a chance to try the dining car because you have to have a reservation . Those with a room get first choice. The view was gorgeous when we got to the mountains. It was also cool to see the little towns. The lady down in the café, was super sweet and very informative the rest of the staff was fair on the train. The people in the station were very friendly. If you're not able to eat at the dining cart, I suggest bring your own food. Our train ran two hours late and I only bought snacks and drinks. The food in the café is all bagged microwave food. It's good for something fast but if you want a real meal and you're not able to get off it, it gets old. We were able to stop in Denver for about 30 minutes and go to the Whole Foods, which was great. But other than that because our train was running late we didn't have very many stops to get a quality meal. All in all if you have the time and the money, the train is a really fun option. We do plan on taking a day trip and getting a room for our next long trip. read more

We took our first Amtrak trip (Omaha to Chicago) this summer, we loved it so much that we rode it to Denver last weekend. I did prefer the Chicago trip, because the dining car and snack car are available during the trip, and the view from the train is beautiful. There is a sightseeing car but even just in the coach seats - the windows are so big. The train is a little shabby but the seats, legroom, overhead storage - all this is SO MUCH better here than on a plane. The nighttime trip to Denver was kind of a drag since you just need to go sit down and try to sleep. Dining and snack cars closed for most of that trip. We only traveled coach, I hear the sleeper cars are nice, but they are expensive. Meals are included for sleeper cars. For coach, you can pay to eat in the dining car. It's a little expensive but it's fun and I liked the food and LOVED the staff there. Amtrak is notorious for not running on time. The issue is that they don't have their own tracks. Therefore they don't have priority usage of the tracks if there are any problems with the freight trains. We just don't have a passenger rail infrastructure in the US anymore, which is too bad. So the routes and schedules for Amtrak are very limited. I haven't been in the Omaha station. The hours are weird, because the schedules of the trains in Omaha are around 11pm and around 5am. We didn't need to go in the station because we had bought tickets online and we could just get on the train. There's no security line, and you can bring food and drinks etc with you. Or pretty much anything, but check to make sure because some things (like electric skateboards) are not allowed. And other things (like bikes) might require an extra fee. The train does not seem to be accessible in regard to mobility issues, but maybe accommodations can be made. I don't know how parking at the station works. We live in the Old Market so we just walk to the station. I loved both our trips, but definitely preferred the daytime one to Chicago. The nice thing about the nighttime trip to Denver is that it was like having an extra day of vacation, since night travel wasn't stressful and we kind of dozed off and on during the journey. And it's great to arrive at the station in the city downtown rather than at an airport far away. We just got off the train and walked to our hotel. read more

This was my first time at this Omaha Amtrak Station. I had traveled from Lincoln to here. It's a cool and simple little station. A little before we arrived here, the conductor woke me up to let me know we were almost here. When the train stopped, we all exited, and it was easy and quick to get around the fence and into the station. It was very clean here inside and outside. The restroom was very clean. The train station hours as of 6/6/24 are 10 pm to 6:30 am daily, since the only trains that stop here are approx 3:25 am eastbound towards Chicago and about 4:45 am westbound towards Northern California. It has a nice waiting station inside to wait to be picked up. The lady that worked behind the window was really sweet! I plan on seeing this place again on future train trips!!! read more

This was my first time traveling by Amtrak and so far, Omaha is the only train station I've been in. While building pales in comparison to the train stations you'll find in Chicago and other cities, the location is great. It's just south of the Old Market which is the heart of downtown Omaha. A brief walk across the 10th street bridge to the historic Little Italy neighborhood and you're there. The parking lot while not fenced off, is clean and looks like a relatively safe place to keep your car. It helps that the station is staffed overnight. That probably discourages some potential vanadalism. The station itself outdated but it is clean and the employees are friendly. My advice is to wait until your train is nearby otherwise you'll be sitting on uncomfortable metal benches. While I was here, two of the three vending machines were out of order. Not sure if that's a regular occurrence. Overall a decent enough place to wait for your train. read more

The California Zephyr makes this short stop every day in Omaha coming and going. Early in the mornings heading east to Chicago, and late in the night heading west to Los Angeles - when on time. An enclosed station with ticket service waiting lobby and a small covered area at the platform for loading and unloading of passengers. Other than that there's not much else. It's dated and looks it, by comparison to other stops on this route. The train literally stops in the middle of the town, so if you're visiting Omaha is convenient for it's downtown access. Otherwise it's just another stop on a long trip between the to end destinations. A place to get out and stretch your legs if you're awake. The California Zephyr is an iconic all American route across some of the most spectacular scenery the continent has to offer. Making stops in spots large and small along the way, this one serves its purpose. A mode of transportation that's usually relaxed and if you're going from one end to the route to the other do yourself a favor and get the sleeping accommodations for the duration. 3.5 Stars - it's got cover during inclement weather and personnel on duty at both times during stops. 00573 read more

Great service from Omaha to Grand Junction. The customer service on the phone before hand was professional. The attendants on the sleeper car were very friendly. It was very difficult to sleep on the lower berth next to the tracks. The breakfast and lunch were delicious. The steak for dinner was OK, either over or under cooked. Overall, great way to go through the Rockies. you see things that you would miss from driving on the interstate. read more

Just got off the phone with Amtrak with regard to our Vail to Denver experience and I'm nothing short of appalled. While they will refund the bus tickets we didn't use (because we weren't able to... http://www.yelp.com/biz/greyhound-bus-lines-denver#hrid:WPYG4nUmpUQnHUDZIZyJkQ) they had absolutely no accountability or responsibility for the additional $120 we had to spend on 2 shuttles and refused to do anything for us. Besides the 'I'm sorry' that I got plenty of times from the customer service rep I talked to - finally after I submitted my inquiry 3 weeks ago - I just can't believe how the company disavowed any and all responsibility for the additional out of pocket expense (not to mention hassle) we had to endure just to get to their train. Totally unreasonable way to do business, in my opinion, especially because we booked the bus tickets through them to begin with. I'll never take Amtrak again. What a crock. Who wants to pay the price of a plane ticket for a trip that takes as long as driving anyway? read more

I arrived here via California Zephyr on Thursday night at 11pm. I didn'g go into the staiton, but I wanted to let everyone know that this is in a safer environment. I was scared since I had to walk to Old Market where I was going to Couchsurf, but when I got off the train I had the most beautiful walk I've ever had coming out of public transit. There is a lot happening north of this area, so this was extremely pleasant. read more

It was around the second week of February, 2015. I Came through there like I did my last trip from Sioux Falls (Greyhound) to Reno (Amtrak.) Well, I didn't pay attention to the hours, and I left the Greyhound station right away (4:45pm), stopped at Cubbies for some hot wings and snacks, then arrived at Amtrak and realized they didn't open until 930PM! The only bad thing about this station is it's location, kind of tucked away in the corner area of downtown. This would have been okay, except it was 17-degrees outside! All I had was a hoodie underneath a Starter jacket that wasn't really made for that type of weather. So there I was, with my duffle and backpack really too heavy to walk back to Greyhound. I'm not trying to be overly- dramatic, but it seemed like the clock was going backwards as I paced back and forth freezing. Anyway, about two hours into my misery, an older white guy walks around the side of the station and looked over my way and muttered something about it being cold. I kind of ignored him cause I thought he was a late-night tweeker. (Lived in Cali too long, I guess.) He left and I assumed he was on foot as he walked away out of my view. About 20 minutes later, a VERY late-model SUV pulls up and THE SAME GUY popped up and asked if I was waiting for the train. I told him I was and he excused himself to his vehicle and came back with a nice, clean blanket. "Just don't want you to leave Omaha thinking there are no caring people here," he said. Then he went back to the SUV and returned with a nice mug of coffee. Wow, did that help! He said something about he and some others have been trying to get the station to be more flexible dealing with their hours, but had no luck with the Federal Government. So, my second trip through Omaha Amtrak was made bearable by that kind gentlemen. (I later kicked myself for previously judging him by his appearance.) We shook hands, I survived the last couple of hours in the cold, and that was that! read more

Railroad travel is a bygone era. i suggest everyone should do it at sometime. A year ago my family took a trip on the California zephyr. We had family room there was 4 the room it was tight but comfortable! the only advice i would give anyone with this type of travel. Is go with the flow and expect the unexpected and enjoy the trip! because your not driving a car and get to enjoy the scenery! read more

I bought the $75 ticket for two hours, when I ask for refund I got $60 back. 20%of the refund fee. Ridiculous.

Nice enough station. Nice staff, comfy enough for a packed station waiting for the once a day train at 5am.

First timer to try Amtrak from omaha to chicago round trip. My omaha to chicago trip was 30 minute late, but otherwise, it was a smooth trip. During my return, weather was freezing cold, and a lot of trains were canceled, including mine. I called them, and it took an hour to wait on the phone until i spoke to a lady who offered the next day train with upgrade fees of more than $200 extra. Otherwise, all they could offer was the original cost I gave for my return trip as a credit back to my credit card. It reminds me of megabus. Finally, i took southwest back home. much better experience to fly back home. read more

Facilities are a little dated. But the staff is very nice. Our train ran late and we were informed from the app and as soon as we walked through the door an attendant told us. No wifi but really not bad for just needing to hop on a train. read more
