I've been in their doors multiple times yet I've never penned my praise. The Outdoor Store is a much-needed store in an area with a lot of outdoor activities yet surprisingly few stores to supply those endeavors. Their stock and layout is probably what you'd expect: A lot of cool weather clothing in top name brands, shoes, tents and sleeping bags and some other sporting equipment. It's not a huge place, but they pack in a good variety. The clothing, as I find in most places, is usually very expensive. I'm not sure if this is just typical of these brands or coastal small store markups. Fortunately, I wasn't there for clothes. The guy who helped us was very nice and brought out several pairs of shoes for my wife to try on. I ended up buying a kite for my son. I initially didn't think that was something they would have, but they had a decent selection at reasonable prices. All in all a great experience and a lot of outdoor inspo!

They have accessories for your four-legged friend too!

It's as if someone boiled out, and condensed an REI. Superior quality products for outdoor activities. I got a super good deal on a rechargeable pack for my petzl headlamp. Friendly employees, too!

My favorite store in all of Fort Bragg and Mendo. Owners are great too! Family owned.

It's a great place to pick up anything that you realized that you may have forgotten or to restock on anything you may need during your stay in Shelter Cove. They really have all the essentials, which is nice and we visited here a couple times during our most recent stay in Shelter Cove. The town of Shelter Cove is a small coastal town so wherever you are staying in the area, this general store is easy to get to. As we pulled up, they had fresh vegetables and fruit for sale outside the store. We were warmly welcomed as soon as we entered the store and everyone was very friendly. The store is on the smaller side, although they were well stocked and had everything we were looking for. The store was clean and really well organized. I really liked that it was very easy to find everything that we were looking for. They have bear canister rentals as well as trail information if you are hiking the Lost Coast Trail. The Lost Coast Trail stretches about 25 miles along the coast and Shelter Cove is where people start or end this trail. People tend to come here (by car or plane since they have a small runway) to have a nice relaxing weekend on the coast or to hike the Lost Coast trail. If you are doing the latter and have forgotten anything, this is a good place to stop. They have a gift shop next door with items from many local artists and craftspeople and it's a great place to get unique souvenirs. An all around excellent general store to meet your needs while visiting the beautiful Shelter Cove area!

At 7:29 four cars pulled up to the only in-town store, which closes at 7:30. I was one of them, needing to get baby food and diapers for my 1-year-old. Nope. The clerk literally shut the door in our faces and left. Technically, she's in the right--7:30 is closing time. But it's also an obvious F-u to anyone who looks different or looks like they are from out of town, no matter how much they need the tiniest bit of kindness or hospitality. Shelter Cove is a beautiful place with some very harsh people.

Definitely debated renting a canoe as well but we just didn't have enough time. The bikes were perfect to get us around town and down a trial close by. We had them reserved for 3 hours but they weren't worried about our time limit as long as we got them back by 4:30. The owners of the shop are super chill and relaxed. We felt very welcomed in their space. It was easy to book online and they're very responsive and flexible. I will say the breaks on the bike were a little worn but didn't pose any issues for us. I was a little bit nervous because our pup doesn't exactly love water nor do we canoe often, but Rick via email and the staff on site were so helpful in answering any lingering questions. Rowing away from site was easy and smooth, and we floated off the side for a bit to take in the view. Once the wind picked up, rowing back was harder since we were going against the current, but still manageable! Everyone had a great time. We didn't use up the full three hours we were booked for, but nonetheless made it quite the way before turning back. We also respectfully from a distance, saw many seals! Our pup ended up enjoying her time on the canoe, and was all smiles. She was so relaxed that she actually fell asleep on the way back while we worked to paddle against the current. I'd say totally add this to your itinerary and make sure you bring a hat, sunscreen, and water for hydration!

I ended up asking the owner for some advice on how to get started in the local waters. He was incredibly helpful- not only did he recommend a specific spoon spinner, but he even took the time to show me the best way to cast and retrieve it for the river. This place is definitely a local gem. Whether you're a regular or you're like me and somehow managed to leave your tackle box at home, it's a great spot to drop by. Great service and even better advice!

Kayaking the Russian River is something I've had on my to do list for years. This summer, with the…read moreriver still flowing nicely well in to July, I decided to finally make it a priority for a weekend adventure. In reading, Yelp and other reviews all signs indicated that King's was THE place. I had stopped in the shop during other trips to Guerneville to check out their outdoor clothing and accessories, so I was familiar with them. I had decided on what's labeled as their Trip #2 on the website which is a 5 mile kayak (self guided) from Johnson's Beach to Monte Rio. I called and reserved a tandem kayak about 4 days in advance and was given a few options of a start time. I choose 11 am since we were driving in from the East Bay and didn't want to leave home too early. They were super friendly and helpful when calling and made sure we understood the trip details and were booking the right package for our skills and needs. A credit card number is required to hold your reservation. We arrived closer to 10::30 and luckily found parking on the street right near the shop-I was worried about that on a summer Sunday but maybe getting there earlier helped. The girl who checked us in was super knowledgeable and made sure she showed us a map of our route, which includes a small section where you need to get out of your kayak and walk it about 200 yards around the dam to circumvent it and then launch back in. We were provided a dry bag, paddles, kayak and life vests. They have you walk a few blocks down to Johnson's Beach and they meet you there with the kayak. This year, after the 2023 rainy winter, the river was flowing nicely-we had a mostly smooth paddle down the river. For quite a while we had quite a bit of solitude and it was so peaceful and lovely with the river and redwoods. Things got a little busier towards Monte Rio beach and downright chaotic as we had to navigate hoards of people swimming with no situational awareness of our kayak and others coming through. It was a relief to get past it and get our kayak to the boat launch. You call Kings as you approach Monte Rio to schedule your pick up. They were there for us to shuttle us back to Guerneville within 5 minutes of us leaving the water. I had the most wonderful day out on the river. We saw lots of water birds and turtles and for the most part it was a very serene trip, Highly recommend Kings and would 100% use them again. They know the river well and gave us advice about certain areas and seem like they truly love what they do!
