My favorite store in all of Fort Bragg and Mendo. Owners are great too! Family owned.

Whenever I can, I love to shop local and this store really helped me out during a recent solo trip from LA all the way up the California coast. I realized I hadn't any good thick hiking socks so I was relieved to find The Outdoor Store on Yelp. The woman who helped me was so kind and helpful ... and I so enjoyed our conversation. This place is well stocked and has all the things you might need for your outdoor adventure. I highly recommend this store when you're in the area. read more

This store is super cool! I love purchasing from locally owned business rather than Amazon or some other large chain-store. You really get a cool vibe from this place and it's really welcoming -- the guy working here is very knowledgeable about the outdoors and all the equipment associated with it. In the back they have standard The North Face and Columbia wear. Lots of warm jackets, t-shirts, pants, and shorts. Their apparel is on point for sure. I briefly considered buying a North Face jacket, but we were only in the area for a brief amount of time and I didn't have room to pack it. Next time I will come back and consider buying more stuff here. :) read more

I've been in their doors multiple times yet I've never penned my praise. The Outdoor Store is a much-needed store in an area with a lot of outdoor activities yet surprisingly few stores to supply those endeavors. Their stock and layout is probably what you'd expect: A lot of cool weather clothing in top name brands, shoes, tents and sleeping bags and some other sporting equipment. It's not a huge place, but they pack in a good variety. The clothing, as I find in most places, is usually very expensive. I'm not sure if this is just typical of these brands or coastal small store markups. Fortunately, I wasn't there for clothes. The guy who helped us was very nice and brought out several pairs of shoes for my wife to try on. I ended up buying a kite for my son. I initially didn't think that was something they would have, but they had a decent selection at reasonable prices. All in all a great experience and a lot of outdoor inspo! read more

She said she spoke with the owner and they were going to honor the refund of my purchase. This is true customer care and I appreciate the service. When I returned for my refund, I inquired about some backpacking equipment that I was researching and found out that Heather is a backpacker with great knowledge about the hobby. I was looking for an airbed and thought I would buy it from a local store instead of online or a box store . I called this store and made my inquiry. The man (I presumed owner or manager by the way he responded) said he had 1 left. After he assured me that it was one of the better quality ones on the market I offered to pay for it over the phone. He said that it was not necessary and would pull it off the shelves and put it up front, by the register. I love the Outdoor Store! And it's not just for ladies, they have men's clothing and equipment as well. The staff here are super helpful, and they will spend as much time as you need answering questions and helping you pick out the best product for your needs. They also have great stories about outdoor adventures, and since they personally use the products they sell, I trust recommendations. A lot of well known outdoor companies are carried here, and you can find everything from tents to flashlights, with extras like thick fuzzy socks and stout water bottles. In all the years I've been visiting Fort Bragg, this is the first time I made it into The Outdoor Store. They have everything. I needed a straw lid for my Hydroflask. The Outdoor Store does not honor returns. When I brought in a damaged product, the counter person said he would have to send it into the manufacturer to get an authorization for warranty. This is totally unacceptable and is not how a good retailer operates. I wanted to support the local small business but if they want to screw over their customers then I will give my business to the big box retailers like REI who have no problem honoring returns. All I wanted was a replacement waterproof bag. I will never shop here again and advise everyone I know to avoid it as well. read more

We were slow to check out this store--I think because it looks more hunting/fishing than hiking/camping--but the rain forced us in on our last trip. A qualified and pleasant, if laconic, salesman helped me pick out waterproof hiking shoes and rain pants. If you're a SmartWool/ Prana/Patagonia kind of dresser, you might want to try on regular clothes, too. Selection of backpacks, camping gear, as well. read more

A wonderful hiking store in the tradition of what outdoor shops used to be, full of lots of the essentials, and the small stuff that makes the difference between a wonderful trip and misery. For example, they sell a nice selection of perlon by the foot, and have a well-stocked selection of cord ties, buckles, clevis pins and all the other stuff needed to fix a pack or broken tent. Of course they have a well-curated selection of the standards, like packs, boots, stoves, etc. But again, it is the details that really stand out, like a nice selection of backpacking kitchen accessories that includes some neat doo-dads that I haven't seen anywhere else. Given its location, it is the perfect last stop to get forgotten essentials before heading into the Lost Coast or hiking elsewhere in Mendocino! read more

Popped my head in to The Outdoor Store and was instantly pulled in. The owner greated us with a smile and encouraged us to take a seat in a comfy Kelly fold-out love seat (what initially caught my eye as I popped in). I was already sold, but knew there was more to explore. As we browsed the collection, it became apparent that everything in the store was thoughtfully selected. And modestly priced! From trail guides, cookbooks, and maps to Jetboils, Country's Pantry dried foods, and water filters; from a full price range of shoes and apparel, to all the favorite camping packs and accessories, this store has for a bit of everything for the great outdoors. I'm sure there was more for me to discover in the shop, but I had to stop before I got started, and left with a Columbia rain jacket and some Country's pantry dried food - all together costs just a bit over $100. This place is rad - as an avid hiker/backpacker/lover of the great outdoors, I was super impressed by this store! To boot, the owner gave us some great suggestions for local camping and hiking.
