I've dealt with the staff here on several occasions and find them efficient and caring. I've had my rescues brought here and it's like coming home. I've watched the doctor relate to my animals and seen them respond in a positive manner. I've also had to bring animals here to be put to rest, and they treat their human customers with respect and understanding. I do recommend this vet. Just remember: treat their staff well. I've seen some rudeness from folks in the past. These people do their best and that might take time. read more

​I brought my 6-year-old dog here to establish care, get an annual Lepto booster, run routine heartworm and tick labs, drop off a fecal sample for testing, express anal glands, and check thyroid levels. My dog is already diagnosed with hypothyroidism and has been stable on daily Levothyroxine. I specifically requested a routine post-pill Total T4 test when scheduling the appointment a week in advance, and I reiterated this when checking in. ​From the start, the office was completely disorganized. The staff claimed they never received my dog's medical records, even though I called my previous clinics from the exam room and confirmed they had forwarded them days prior. I waited over an hour in the room with zero services completed. During that time, roughly five different technicians rotated through trying to take my dog back or presenting contradictory care plans. The first plan omitted the thyroid test entirely. While waiting, I could clearly hear Dr. M. S. Zaffer yelling at his staff in the back area. ​When Dr. Zaffer addressed the thyroid test, he insisted that a Free T4 was mandatory and claimed a Total T4 was inadequate for dosage monitoring, despite our previous veterinarians routinely managing my dog's care with annual Total T4 tests without issue. He became noticeably argumentative and condescending, sarcastically calling me "Doc" and asking how many hypothyroidism cases I had personally dealt with. He then brought me into the back treatment area to push the test on me again, stating he had never experienced this kind of resistance before, and began raising his voice when I held firm. ​While he eventually conceded and said he would run the Total T4, he returned to the room minutes later holding an old diagnostic record from two years prior, questioning why my dog had a Free T4 run at diagnosis. When I clarified that Free T4 was used during the initial diagnostic phase, Dr. Zaffer abruptly stated it was "best for me to leave," effectively refusing routine care, vaccinations, and basic wellness services because I advocated for standard monitoring lab work. ​Berating staff, losing control of one's temper, attempting to intimidate clients, and abandoning patient care simply because a client's informed request to continue established care bruised his ego is unacceptable. I strongly advise pet owners to seek care elsewhere. read more

Yesterday, I took my cat in after she was having some bathroom issues where I found 2 bloody stools in her litter box. I've previously had this experience with a different cat, and so I understood the scope of diagnostics they would perform to determine the issue. Dr. Zaffer took X-rays, and ordered blood work and a fecal test, all of which made sense to me. However, I was sent home with an entire bag of medications- 8 different oral medications, all of which I was instructed to "sprinkle into her food." Meanwhile- my cat wasn't given any kind of antibiotic shot, nor any pain medication to help mediate her discomfort. And ever since coming home, she's experiencing incontinence, and has been deep in hiding to the point where I can't clean her up. She's also refusing to eat, so the 8 medications aren't worth a damn. Having had this experience with a different pet, and after reading others' experiences online- I'm livid that they did not give her any kind of antibiotic shot, and are expecting a sick and uncomfortable pet to be force-fed 8 different powders, gels, and liquids- all within a single-serve portion of wet food. It's hard enough to get a cat to eat 1 food that's been dosed in medications, much less 8. I'm deeply worried about my cat's health and recovery as a result of this disgusting lack of insight. read more

I had my dog in for a neuter on Monday. They gave him a Penicillin injection, and prescribed Amoxicillin for him to go home with. I had worked in Veterinary Medicine for years, and had never heard of that but let it go. I also asked about a cone for his procedure upon pickup, and was told "he should be fine". By Tuesday he was unable to hold his urine, straining to pee, and hind end shaking. Wednesday he was vomiting, didn't sleep at all in the night, and would not eat. Still straining to pee and urinating all over the house (on accident). I called to speak with someone on this, and I was told I would need to make an appointment. I explained that they were over an hour from me (this is not my regular vet, it is the vet the rescue used), and asked if they would be waving my exam fee to be seen since he was just in on Monday. Again, after working in vet med it is pretty customary to get a free recheck after a procedure. I was cut off while asking and was just told "That is completely up to the Doctor". Got it. Can someone please ask before I drive over an hour each way or pay my regular vet to fix a problem that he did not start? I told her never mind, and contacted my regular vet. My regular vet said that he also had never heard of a standard neuter resulting in such an exorbitant amount of antibiotics, and wondered if there was some sort of contamination during the procedure that I was not made aware of. My vet also mentioned that the pain medication that he was put on, is really not standard for the procedure that he was given. I spent $400 at my current vet (more than the cost of the neuter), and we are hoping that they did not do any internal damage which is making it hard for him to hold his bladder, or be unsure when to release it. Overall, I am not pleased with the level of care OR the client service. I would not recommend you bring your pet here, and based upon the reviews there is an overall lack of care by many. My dog was fixed here, and he is having so many complications and the receptionist won't allow me to speak to a vet or a vet tech when I call (3x). I don't know what happened during his fix but I think something happened and they're trying to hide it. After reading other reviews I definitely should've gone anywhere else. Don't waste your time or money and save your pets from this nightmare. read more

A WORD OF CAUTION: We boarded our 10 lb special needs dog at Anchor Bay Veterinary Center from Saturday, November 5th - Monday, November 14th. With the assurance of "good care" that she was at a Veterinary Hospital. When we picked her she seemed to be excited to be going home. But within minutes it became obvious she was frantic and delirious. She scooted on her butt all the way out of the Vet office and all the way across the parking lot. She didn't seem to know us and continued to be frantic. She came in the house and drank all the water she could find. Promptly threw all of it up. On close examination: pale gums, panting and frantic to find water. It was obvious she had diarrhea for many days while she was under their care. She pooped so hard at home I thought she prolapsed her rectum. I started small doses of water and Pepto Bismol for the next 6 hours. Warm compresses on her rectum gently cleaned up the dried sticky diarrhea. The staff at Anchor Bay Veterinary Center stated she was too jumpy to put her harness on when they handed her back to us. Said there was no food left though I gave them enough for 3 weeks (expensive urinary tract prescription diet) while handing us a filthy bowl that was never cleaned. No other report of how she did while in their care. We did call on Wednesday, November 9th to inquire. They said she was fine and doing well. We took pictures and husband went back next day to request an explanation for her condition. Short staffed and a refund. We could bring her back to be examined. Extremly reluctant to take her back into that building again. Took her to our Vet November16, she weighed 8.8 lb. Exam, Urine analysis, fecal test. She is scared and hiding under the bench. Prescriptions: Propectalin Gel, Amoxicillin and Polyflex injection. She has improved under our care. My concern is that we are not the only pet owners to suffer this betrayal of trust. How can they be a Veterinary Hospital and not observe that an animal under their care for 10 days is distressed with diarrhea and DO NOTHING. At 10 lbs with diarrhea for days she lost fluid which became worst and made the chances for permanent damage greater from dehydration. They could of called us and we would of given authority to administer meds. OH and WATER ... such a simple vital need. Our hearts were broken to imagine the desperate silence as she waited to be cared for. This is lack of Accountability, Incompetence and Neglect by Anchor Bay Veterinary Center, Dr.M.S. If you love your pet and your money. DO NOT go to this VET. I had been going for 9 years. My last wellness visit with this vet ended in tragedy and lies. They did the tests and the Doc informed me she had an enlarged liver due to high enzymes, need supplements 200 for the supplements. found infected tooth recommended extraction, like he did 3 years ago, where he cleaned teeth but extracted 18 without my knowledge (i should have done something then). I asked for antibiotics, tooth is fine. I sent my dog to get nails trimmed. she walked back on all 4 legs and returned to me limping. The tech asked if she had a limp before I SAID NO. Doc did an x-ray, and exam found she now has a torn ACL. I asked what he was going to do to fix this issue. He informed me that this was a pre-existing condition and she is old, joints were full of Arthritis, he said this isn't a matter of if but when for the other rear leg. SO HE DID NOTHING. I left and got a second opinion at the Animal Hospital of Chesterfield. They ran the same tests. found her enzymes to be high but not out of range for a 10year old dog. Her tooth infection was going away. Teeth to be monitored maybe cleaned at a later date. Examined her leg. sure enough it is a torn ACL. I scheduled surgery at my expense. when they got in they found NO ARTHRITIS and the ACL was the only damage indicating that this was done from an abrupt pull on the leg. like what would happen with nail trimming. ANCHOR BAY VET should be closed and the Doc's license terminated permanently. (Doc I hear Meijer is hiring) He is a hazard to all animals and your pocket book. FYI my dog is a 30 lbs. Havanese/poodle mix. not big enough to have ACL or hip issues contrary to the address given I live in New Baltimore and have for 21years read more

Thank you Dr. Zaffer and staff. You saved my little dog Karma's life. She was on a leash at Brown's field on Harsens Island. A pack of dogs who were not on leashes attacked her. Part of her intestines were coming out of her. Dr. Zaffer did emergency surgery and saved her. The staff are wonderful and caring. They are keeping her comfortable and allowing us to visit as long as we want every day. I can't thank them all enough. Over the years we have been to several good Veterinarians. I love this vet office just left after bringing both of my Rat Terriers in, and I never stop being amazed by the quality of service. Dr. Zaffer is impressive, and his staff is always TOP NOTCH, quick to get in, and easy to work with; he has never had a negative experience. So our dog started having back issues. We brought him into here as they were our current vet. They took him back for xrays immediately, then the vet called us back to look at them and told us he had calcification of the disks and that it was pinching a nerve in his spine. He told us we should cut whatever we're feeding him in half and that "if we starved our dog until his bones were popping out he'd live forever." They prescribed him some steroids and a ridiculous amount of muscle relaxers. The vet was in a hurry and didn't really explain much like what any of the meds were fod or if we should be resting our dog or exercising him since now we have to "starve" him. They gave him a shot of steroids at the office and then we paid the near $300 bill and left. So a couple days pass and I am giving my dog the 8 horse pills a day of muscle relaxers they prescribed and he is so drowsy he doesn't move and when he does he is completely dragging his hind quarters across the ground. I freaked out and called the vet. I voiced my concerns and asked if I could lower the amount of meds he was given the tech who answered told me that the muscle relaxers shouldn't do that at all. I asked if the vet was there and what our dog even had and if I should be resting him or not. She supposedly went and spoke to the vet and called me back to say he has IVDD and that I'm welcome to cut the muscle relaxers if I want but that THEY don't think it was that causing him to not move. She says "if the steroids aren't helping him within the first couple days then they aren't going to help him at all" and that "his condition is just progressing that fast and I'm sorry there's nothing we can do, you'll probably have to bring him in to put him down within the month" So the first red flag was the vet telling us to starve our baby, then not giving us any info at all. The last straw however was being told over the phone that we should just bring the dog in to put him down. Obviously I didn't listen to them. I took the dog off the muscle relaxers and he was able to walk again, we went to a different vet and they were flabbergasted about how the anchor bay vet treated us. Never go here, they don't care about you or your animals, just a quick paycheck. Edit: Oh not to mention they refused to give our records or xrays to our new vet saying we didn't exist in their records. Thankfully we went in to get the print outs for all our pets. read more

Dr Zaffer found these bladder stones in my 12 year old golden doodle. Two previous vets treated my dog for several years for urinary tract infections. I've been there several times when I can't get into my regular vet. I clearly stated the two cats I was bringing in needed combo tests and rcps. They had been tnred before coming to rescue and already had rabies. They not only did the rabies anyway but did a three year rabies at that? Talk about padding your bill. I said this wouldn't have happened if you weren't still curbside the receptionist said that's the way the vets want it. I said what about the fact that they just got rabies? Oh they'll be fine. Then she went on to infer that it was my fault because the tech told me what they were going to do when she came out. She did not say they were going to do a rabies let alone a three year rabies. And a vet should know if a cat is ear tipped they've already gotten rabies. She should have at least inquired before just doing it. Just rude and money grubbing . This doctor is very smart and compassionate. All the staff is wonderful. When My cat needed immediate care, they got me in right away which I really appreciated. The doctor was very honest with me and always told me exactly what they were doing for my cat, such as going through every med they were giving him and why and all his test results and what they meant. I do wish they had overnight staff as well as advanced equipment (such as ultrasound, etc) but I have heard these things may come in the future. They provide great care that is very reasonably priced. This is a great place to take your pet and I appreciate everything they did for my cat Tiger. read more

My 11 year old cocka poo, Johnny, was injured at the groomer which resulted in an infection. Our regular vet was closed due to the holiday weekend. Thankfully, Anchor bay Vet Center were able to see him. They were so wonderful, compassionate, and kind. They also have grooming, which is great to know! I thank you all so much!! Took my lab there to get second opinion on her diabetes. He took an X-ray and advised she had a tumor and put her on rimadyl which would help her!!! WRONG! Took her to second vet who said she has NO tumor but has retained 2 liters of water from drinking too much water. Worst part yet - rimadyl killed her! No one ever told me the side effects of this drug and 3 weeks later she was dead with liver failure from the medication. read more

Worst place I have every been to. Will never take my animals there again. The front staff was rude. Didn't answer my questions after my pet had surgery. Tried to overcharge me for the procedure. I got a quote from them before hand and they tried to double it. When I called them on it, they knocked a little more off. I told them I'm not paying anymore than you quoted me. After 20 minutes they finally agreed to the original price quote. Do not trust them. Go over your bill thoroughly. They even tried to give my pet vaccinations and routine tests she already had. We took her shot record with us and they didn't even look at it. Then when I refused to pay for them again, she demanded to see the shot record. Sorry lady, I tried to show you earlier and you were not interested, not my fault. You are the one with personel problems. read more
