The sea lions barking was quite charming and a natural part of Newport -- like the traffic of New York City.

We were able to find a spot almost directly across the street from the docks, although I certainly would not expect that during the height of tourist season. Even before we got out of the car, we could hear the barking of the sea lions. The viewing dock was busy with people, but everyone seemed respectful of one another as they took turns looking over the railing and watching the commotion below. What makes this location especially enjoyable is just how close you are to the animals. The sea lions are literally right below the viewing area, piled together on the floating docks, swimming around them, barking, pushing for space, sleeping, and occasionally getting into what appears to be a disagreement over who gets the better spot. Take a look at my photos. There were a LOT of sea lions there during our visit. We have also visited the sea lion viewing area at Pier 39 in San Francisco. That is certainly an experience in itself, but Newport provides a different perspective. Here, you are looking almost straight down at the animals from only a short distance away. You can clearly see their faces, whiskers, size differences, interactions with one another, and just how crowded those floating platforms become. For us, that closer viewing experience makes Newport particularly enjoyable. We usually spend an hour or so watching them and then head to one of the nearby coffee shops for a hot drink while taking in the harbor and ocean atmosphere. It has become one of those simple Newport activities that we continue to enjoy. The sea lions are somewhat seasonal, so if seeing them is an important part of your Newport trip, check ahead before making the drive. They traditionally leave the area for part of the summer breeding season and begin returning later in the summer. If you have never stopped to see the Newport sea lions before, it is definitely worth the experience. It costs nothing, does not require a major time commitment, and gives you an opportunity to observe these animals at remarkably close range. See my photos.

Peak times to view the sea lions is from August thru May, as they migrate south in summer to breed. It can be pretty stinky and loud along the sea lion docks. You're also asked not to feed the sea lions as they are wild animals. Viewing the sea lions from the docks is free. I would highly recommend stopping to see them while visiting the historic Newport bayfront!

To get to the tide pools, you have to walk across uneven rocks, so it is not easily accessible for people with balance issues. It's worth noting that the staircase in the lighthouse is under construction and not available. From there, we walked up the incline to get views of the cove and the north beach areas. It was just one perfect photo after another. We then hopped back into the car and drove down to the Cove parking lot. There are not many parking spaces there, but we were there early and had no problem. Just another wonderful set of views.

Perhaps even a primary home as well but I do like living in a large metro area because of the various services and entertainment options at your disposal. I have been to this Natural Area twice now and it's just so beautiful! The first time I really took advantage of taking pictures of the lighthouse here as well as the view. The second time was a repeat of that particular activity but in addition to that we went down to the tide pools and were immediately entranced with all of the aquatic life in those pools. We took pictures of that and were just so revitalized immersing ourselves in the nature there. I t was beautiful and simply amazing. Really nothing else needs to be said other than if you are touring along the Oregon Coast and are hitting the lighthouses this is a must stop... well they all are actually but this one really is. There is another lighthouse on the south end of town so Newport has scenic and at another time more practical advantage of having two lighthouses in the same town all within very close proximity. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is truly a beautiful place!

I emailed with the company for months beforehand, they communicated well and gave me a quote with no hidden fees. Our driver, Zhieco, was super nice and professional, he opened all the doors for us every time we got in or out, and when we asked him questions he was chatty and good company. The SUV was very spacious and the actual ride was very smooth. Zhieco arrived early to pick us up which was appreciated, and there were no issues at all. Definitely would recommend!!!:)
