Gary is not the most chatty fellow, but he's super nice, knowledgeable, and skilled. The other captains clearly respect him. Check his credentials and I can't imagine you'll find a more qualified captain. Taking one of the smaller boats was clearly an advantage. Only one other couple who sat up front, so it was a private family experience. Depoe Bay is small, so you don't travel far for this tour, but the swells are real and this boat was nimble. We saw larger crowded boats listing dramatically. Gary seemed to know where the whales were going. We basically followed a mom and her calf the last thirty minutes. First thing we saw was spray then a dorsal fin and fluke. After that, mom and calf sprays, fins, and the baby head popping up to check us out. We traveled the Oregon coast for a week in late July and Whale's Tail was a top experience.

Our guide Gary got everyone all safetied up and vested. The boat was a kickass Zodiac that was nimble and stable as we passed sunbathing seals on our way out of narrow Depoe Bay harbor and into the Pacific. We motored just a short bit before we were trolling and watching whales feeding in the kelp beds. It was an amazing experience. I could be greedy and wish for a full breach. But, really everything after you see that first whale is all gravy. Sometimes life just comes up all Milhouse for you. Whales all day, tip your Captain

We loved sitting on the private balcony watching the fishing boats go by and sea lions play. The sea lions barking was quite charming and a natural part of Newport -- like the traffic of New York City. Street parking was never an issue, but it's November and not high season, so that's not surprising. We really liked being able to walk out the door of our room and find dinner, breakfast, coffee, bars, and places to stroll and shop, all without getting in the car. We would for sure stay at Anchor Pier Lodge again!

Staff in downstairs gift store were great and I was even able to park my motorcycle right near my room (car parking a different thing). Internet also worked well enough for email /VPN. Only down side, as previously mentioned, were the seal lions which barked all night. I tried the provided earplugs and sleep sound machine but finally resorted to my iPod, earbuds and some long meditation tracks to get some sleep. The Bed was also a bit too soft for my back but probably just fine for most.

Perhaps even a primary home as well but I do like living in a large metro area because of the various services and entertainment options at your disposal. I have been to this Natural Area twice now and it's just so beautiful! The first time I really took advantage of taking pictures of the lighthouse here as well as the view. The second time was a repeat of that particular activity but in addition to that we went down to the tide pools and were immediately entranced with all of the aquatic life in those pools. We took pictures of that and were just so revitalized immersing ourselves in the nature there. I t was beautiful and simply amazing. Really nothing else needs to be said other than if you are touring along the Oregon Coast and are hitting the lighthouses this is a must stop... well they all are actually but this one really is. There is another lighthouse on the south end of town so Newport has scenic and at another time more practical advantage of having two lighthouses in the same town all within very close proximity. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is truly a beautiful place!

They direct all traffic through the visitor's center where you can ask the knowledgeable staff about anything and grab brochures and maps if needed. We went up to the lighthouse, down to cobble beach and the tide pools, and everywhere in between, it was so much fun. It was sunny and started raining after we arrived, it's fantastic either way. We were here close to low tide, so that helped improve our tide pool experience, but you can't go wrong fitting this into your schedule while on the coast!

I didn't want to deal with Ubers, plus multiple Uber XLs can get expensive. I also wanted a private car that we could play music in. We had a GREAT experience! I emailed with the company for months beforehand, they communicated well and gave me a quote with no hidden fees. Our driver, Zhieco, was super nice and professional, he opened all the doors for us every time we got in or out, and when we asked him questions he was chatty and good company. The SUV was very spacious and the actual ride was very smooth. Zhieco arrived early to pick us up which was appreciated, and there were no issues at all. Definitely would recommend!!!:)
