Silly me worrying that we wouldn't see any grey whales. We actually heard them before turning in awe to see these giants swimming amongst us. Our guide Gary got everyone all safetied up and vested. The boat was a kickass Zodiac that was nimble and stable as we passed sunbathing seals on our way out of narrow Depoe Bay harbor and into the Pacific. We motored just a short bit before we were trolling and watching whales feeding in the kelp beds. It was an amazing experience. I could be greedy and wish for a full breach. Y'all, this trip was so much fun. The vessel is intimate and close to the water, which makes the experience all the more special. The captain was so friendly, he was extremely knowledgeable, and always made sure we were comfortable and could see the whales. Despite my getting terribly seasick and throwing up at least 3x, he didn't bat an eye and actually apologized to me that I was not feeling well. The captain could not have been sweeter. We also saw some baby seals/sea lions! You can hear the dialogue between your vessel and the other ones out there, which is very humorous and enjoyable. Will definitely go again! Whale's Tail Charters made our trip to Oregon even more special! What a fun group activity! So glad we reserved this tour in advance! Our captain, Laird, did a fabulous job finding multiple whales and showing us the coastline. It was the perfect way to enjoy an afternoon along the Oregon coast! Laird was entertaining, informative, and fun! While there are no guarantees that you'll see whales, being able to motor around the coast and take in the scenery can be just as enjoyable. The sea lions were also fun to watch. The ocean can be a little choppy, depending on the weather, so this may not be for everyone. We didn't mind a few bumps, but it could have been a lot rougher if the winds had picked up. We were dressed appropriately, with windbreakers, fleeces, and tennis shoes, so everyone was comfortable. Be sure to check the forecast a few days beforehand, as you are able to cancel up to 24 hours in advance if you need to. Hopefully, you'll be up for the tour, as it was so memorable! Whale watching is a must if you are traveling along the Oregon Coast. We chose Whale's Tail Charters and thoroughly enjoyed it. We selected 10AM and arrived 30 minutes early per the instructions so we were able to go ahead and head out since everyone was there. I booked a whale watching trip several weeks ago and received the confirmation emails. I neglected to open the email until the day of the trip. Somehow I booked this trip thinking it was in Florence, Or where we are traveling to today. Unfortunately, we are unable to make it to Depoe Bay by the time of the whale watching trip. I called and Kip was very nice but said it was outside of his 24 hour cancellation period. I sort of pleaded with him and he did end up refunding my money. When arriving at the docks the company had two boats ready to go and we were told we could hope on either one. We ended up in the WRONG boat. I could tell that, collectively, the boat operators know what they're doing and know all the best spots to see whales breaching. HOWEVER, we ended up in a boat captained by an older guy who kept talking about how we couldn't get closer to the whales but that they could come up to us and how previous customer had gotten great photos that way. EXCEPT every time a whale started to come closer to us he would start the engine and drive AWAY from the whales. I ended up getting better views of whales from the shore. A total waste of time and money! I've waited 7 months to post this and I'm still mad when I think about it. read more

Guys, it doesn't get better than this. You're only out there for an hour OR an hour and a half but it's SO much fun and it's worth every penny; which while we're at it, you can't argue with the pricing! It's a small charter and my friends and I happened to book an outing with Gary and we were the only ones. It was very informative and Gary is the best! He doesn't just drive the zodiac; he includes you in conversations and has a lot of stories to tell! We loved this charter To start off we goofed and thought our charter was on Tuesday not Monday. 15 minutes before the charter was to leave captain Gary called to see if we were coming. We were 30 minutes away eating breakfast. He allowed us to reschedule. We went out longer than the 1 1/2 time we had paid for. Other charters were turning and leaving but at that moment the whales were really showing themselves. Captain Gary stayed and let us spend additional time watching. We were in a rubber runabout which put us close to the water so when a whale came up on us blew into the boat as it dove under us it was up close and personal. Great! My family of 4 had so much fun and would absolutely go out again with Whale's Tail Charters. It was only the 4 of us so it was a private tour, so to speak. We saw whales, sea lions, and then my kids requested to "go fast" and the captain obliged. We did the one-hour tour. Really it was perfection, my kids said it was "unforgettable", and I don't have a single negative memory of this event. We went on a Saturday and the parking lot was crowded but we were still able to find parking easily. I highly recommend this company - (1) due to delayed flight, we had to move the booking to the next day - and WTC accommodated our circumstances with no problem; (2) due to the traffic, we were running late - and the boat was waiting for us at the bay until we got there; (3) we booked 1 hour trip - and there was no rush on the boat captain behalf - we spent a bit more time out in the waters watching such grand creature rolling its back round-and-round in the cove. We booked a few days in advance and they called us to let us know that they were in fact going out that day, which was nice (the previous days had been very windy/stormy). We had 5 adults and the price was great for what we were getting. Unfortunately, I'd say our tour guide was not exactly the most friendly and didn't point out too many things along the way. We did not see any whales, which wasn't anybody's fault obviously but somewhat disappointing. Also, completely my body, but I became extremely seasick and threw up about 6 times. Didn't see one whale....but the hour out was well worth it. Capt. Brown was a wealth of information and handled the zodiac boat perfectly. We saw local landmarks and sea lions, and great info about the migration of the whales and the "resident" whales.
