Very pleasant and hidden gem! You need a reservation since all the food is made from scratch and the menu is very accommodating to our specific tastes and spice tolerance. Everything was amazing and very very good! This is the best Indian food we had in Toronto. Highly recommended but please book ahead!

I've heard so much about Ancila from my American colleagues who frequented this place every week when they worked on our project - and so it's been on my list ever since! Not too long ago, Ancila was also featured on CBC for her Indian food made from scratch... that's when you know this place is legit. We came here for a Christmas meal, and knew better so made reservations in advance. The restaurant itself is quite large, but there's not many parties seated at any one given time (likely because the main bottleneck is the kitchen - even while we were there, we noticed that there was limited help and the orders / service moved slowly). Ancila came out and greeted us warmly, asking what we preferred so that she could whip up a customized order. We told her that we'd like to try shrimp and goat, and after asking us for our spice preference, she suggested a coconut shrimp curry (slightly sweeter, less spicy), and a dry goat curry (higher on the spice level). We also got some basmati rice, and started off with an order of garlic naan. Ancila told us she'd wait for our mains to arrive before giving us our mango lassi; otherwise, we'd finish it off before the food came. And what good advice! When the food came out, everything was so thoroughly seasoned & rich (and in the case of the lamb, spicy), that we were delighted to wash it down with a refreshing sip of sweet & creamy mango lassi. The goat and shrimp curry were both delicious, but couldn't be more different in terms of flavour! The goat was a drier curry, but the meat was fall off the bone tender. I only wish for a larger portion size and more meat - there simply wasn't enough to go around. The shrimp, on the other hand, was a much creamier and sweeter curry. That said, although it wasn't obviously spicy at first, the heat does creep in! Again, I only wish for more plump shrimp... The basmati rice was lightly seasoned with butter and some other herbs, and was the perfect complement to the goat curry. Meanwhile, I adored the garlic naan. It was so fragrant - I caught myself eating it alone mindlessly. We quickly devoured one serving and moved on to the other. All in all, for the two curries + rice + two servings of naan + two mango lassis, we paid approx. $50-60. Not an expensive meal, but not a cheap one either. That said, I believe that it was well worth it. You can taste the effort that Ancila puts into cooking, and I can definitely say it's been one of the best Indian restaurants I've visited thus far. Would return in a heartbeat!

The food was great Bombay style "chatpata" erson and Ancila is a great lady who prepares the food according to your tastebuds! I had ordered daal which was average but I was craving daal that day. Ancila had recommended katakat chicken or something like that; exact name I forgot. IT was too spicylike dangerous spicy lol but I'm sure I had asked for it to be prepared that way so I deserved the torture! I really enjoyed the food and will be returning again....

TIP: Make reservations. It's primarily a 1-woman operation, so owner prefers to know when you're coming! First, you don't come here for the food, but more for the EXPERIENCE. Don't get me wrong, the food is delicious, freshly prepared, but that's not the *main* reason for your visit. The rumours are true. There's no menu here at Ancila's. Instead, Ancila herself comes out, chats with you regarding the spice (or not) level, the available proteins, and perhaps the style of cooking she can offer. After that, she goes back into the kitchen and customises a dish pour vous! So it's definitely a unique experience that attracts a certain kind of patron. Second, either go with good company OR patience. Do not go super hungry, alone. Food does take a little longer to prepare. So be forewarned! Third, food was SOLID. We got a Butter Chicken, some kinda Lamb Curry, and Palak Paneer with Garlic Naan & Rice, and ended off with Chai. Butter Chicken stood out and was really good, a bit sweet, with a kick to it. (I think Ancila said it was only a 2-3 in spicy level.) Lamb Curry was good too, with a thinner gravy, Palak Paneer was thick, galicky. Garlic Naan was really good. Nothing was too overly sweet, salty, creamy, or oil laden. I usually expect Indian food to bit too salty &/or oily, so that was a nice surprise! Bill will be a "surprise" too, but Ancila emphasised that it's a "good surprise". Everything that I ordered came out to approx. $52, including tax/excluding tips. So it's not terribly expensive in comparison to other Indian restaurants. Plus, there were leftovers, so... Ancila is down-to-earth, welcoming, and really makes it feel as though you're a part of the food making process. So if you're feeling like something that's unexpected and taking just a small food "risk"...or should I say "adventure", check this place out!

We caught the chef as she just came back from India so she wasn't serving dine-in, but she made an exception for us and let us in. Ancila is so kind and thoughtful in her cooking and can custom your dish to the meat you like and specific spice level. We got the Chicken Vindaloo, Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Karahi, with some garlic & butter naan and rice. The dishes feel very authentic and are cooked to perfection. The meat is incredibly tender, juicy and works well with the sauce. You can call the chef ahead so she can take the time to prepare your custom dish. It feels very homey and how an Indian mom would make it! I would highly recommend this place and it's well worth the drive from the city of your don't live in Mississauga! Ancila also does large party catering and take out, which can be all ordered ahead.

It was a wonderful dinning experience. We have always wanted to try this place out and it was better than we expected. We were greeted by the owner. She explained how the process works. Based on our answers she recommended she dishes. If you are indecisive this is the place to be. Anyway. We ended up getting curry shrimp and yellow lentil with 2 butter naans. It came down to just over 30 dollars. * Tip be prepared to wait. She pretty much does the greeting the ordering the cooking and the bill. Go with good company!

Food was ok. But there was one woman who probably was the owner and she did everything. I find there's something wrong with that.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was given a menu, and guided to a small table near the cashier. I was unsure of what to order so, the waitress guided me on what would be best. For my first dosa, I settled on the butter masala dosa, which came with three dips; coconut, tomato sauce, and chutney. I was pleasantly surprised to taste the dips, as they weren't spicy at all, and blended nicely with the dosa. However, the lentil dish was a tad too spicy for me therefore, I wasn't too keen on that particular dish. The next dosa I had was the plain dosa, then the last was the masala dosa. I found the dosas to be much smaller than what was shown in the photos, which made them disappear quickly into my mouth. They were also quite thin and difficult to rip, as many of the items on the inside tended to fall out as I tried to rip the dosa for dipping. Nevertheless, the taste of the dosas and dips were flavourful, with refills of all dips (minus the lentil dish) and dosas included in the price of $19.99. I had never had a dosa experience such as this one, and would definitely return, as I found it worthwhile and filling. Service was great during the entire experience, and the restaurant itself boasted a great environment. Would definitely return to try other items on the menu!

During our stay, we noticed individuals coming in and out for take-out therefore, the kitchen was kept busy with varying orders. The restaurant itself was large, and as we were told, a bar and event space was being built in the back for larger groups. Upon entering, we were greeted by a kind server, whom showed us to a table of our choosing. Since we were the only diners in the restaurant, we chose to sit in a large booth, which accommodated all four of us nicely. As we entered the restaurant, we noticed how beautiful the decor was, and how nice it smelled! Two very important points that we were blown away by. Upon sitting in the booth, we settled on two orders of butter chicken with plain naan and rice. We also decided on a thali, which had lentils, butter chicken, paneer with butter chicken sauce, yogurt, rice with vegetables, and gulab jamun for dessert. We only had to wait about 12 minutes for our food to arrive, at which point, we were starving, and looking forward to eating. We were pleasantly surprised at how delicious everything tasted. The portion sizes were large, and very well-portioned for each item. We also liked how the naan was included with the thali, and how generous the server was in providing extra water at all times. Our server came over to check on us as we were dining, commenting positively on the type of food that we had chosen. Considering how spacious the restaurant was, along with the inviting ambiance, top-notch service, and appetizing food, we were surprised to see it so quiet. Please fill this restaurant to capacity, as it is beyond amazing, and deserves to be given a chance! Will definitely come back when I'm in the area!

We picked up some vegan chole, vegan eggplant, samosa, and vegan parathas, and tandoori rotis. The Chole and eggplant curries were very disappointing. It didn't taste as it came from a Punjabi restaurant. The spice level and even seasonings were completely off. The samosas were OK and so was the tandoori rotis. The Aloo Parathas again disappointing. Wondering how can one go wrong in making Parathas? Potatoes stuffed in between two bigger tawa rotis. That's how it tasted. Normally, a place that has a massive menu is a bit concerning to me…read moreas it often leads to not really excelling at anything, but that is not the case here in my experience. The reason behind the large menu is related to the aim of the restaurant, which is to showcase the various regional cuisines of India. As a result, don't expect the straightforward menu of: apps, entrees, deserts, etc... rather the menu is divided by cuisine. Aside from honouring tradition, they do offer a couple 'new' takes on some items. If you comb through a few reviews, and certainly the pics, you'll notice a must-order items is the roasted eggplant with pomegranate. It really is like nothing else I've had before and unforgettable in both taste and texture. My group also went with a famous lamb dish as well. I don't remember the name offhand, but it is incredibly soft, well seasoned and nicely spiced dish. We also went with orders of naan, veggie dishes and meat skewers.
