Lunch buffet was $23.99 per person on a weekend. The selection of dishes was fairly small, but each was made well and we enjoyed each one. There was a pani puri station, small salad bar, lentil soup, and about 10 total hot items whether they were samosas, coconut shrimp, or different curries. There was also rice pudding and Gulab Jamun and both were incredible. I enjoyed all the dishes, and the garlic Naan was also fresh and hot. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Buffer is self serve. The used plates can be cleared a bit more frequently, but no big deal and service is friendly. We enjoyed the meal and will be back when we have any cravings for Indian food! We had a great experience with this restaurant. We were seated right away and service was prompt. The menu had a lot of items but was easy to follow. We got the chicken 65, chicken biryani and tikka masala chicken with a side of garlic naan. It was very delicious, we both were very full by the end of it and was happy with what we got. Just the yogurty dish we thought was okay (because we aren't fans of yogurt in general) The decor made us feel like we were in a very fancy restaurant. I came to this restaurant on a Tuesday evening to order a special meal (which a portion of the proceeds will go towards supporting a charity that I support, as part of Giving Tuesday). When I entered, I was warmly greeted by a man who kindly explained what was included in this special meal. Once I selected the items (appetizer- deep fried caulifowers, main- Palak Paneer, and dessert- rasmalai), I sat down on a nearby chair and waited. While waiting, I looked around and observed the decor- warm colours and bronze repeated in various places, a Christmas tree was by the entrance, and the place was separated into two sections, bar by the entrance and the dining area behind the curtains to add to the cozy experience. When my order was ready, the man kindly informed me that the kitchen also included a second dessert (Gulab Jamun). I was excited that I would be getting two desserts, yum! Once I got home, I could not wait to dig in! All the items were delicious- my favourite was the main dish, Palak Paneer. I love spinach and cheese, so I was happy to be able to eat them both in a curry form. The naan and the rice that were included with the meal were good, the portion size was generous and I ate the rest for the next two days. I look forward to coming here again in the future to dine-in. I visited The Host with friends for a winterlicious lunch a while back. The host is a family run restaurant and the ambience feels a bit more upscale. The service we received was good. We were greeted warmly, had our orders taken promptly and food came out quickly. I've been to a lot of Indian restaurants from 'fast food' to those labeling them as 'finer' affair. I'm not clear on what makes this restaurant fine cuisine besides the ambience and food presentation because the taste of the food does not feel elevated in any way. I will note though that their prices are decent - it is not too expensive considering the fine cuisine label. For the lunch three course, I got the bhajia (vegetable onion fritter), butter chicken, and the gulab jamun. Nothing was bad, but also nothing was amazing or stood out. The menu says the butter chicken is supposed to have a twist and be spicier and less creamy but I didn't notice a significant difference from other butter chickens I've tried. To sum up my experience, it was okay. The Host has been around for a while, since 1996. But there are so many competing Indian restaurants nowadays and the taste at The Host doesn't stand out compared to other places I've tried. read more

Although I have been to many Indian buffets, the 3 items that I enjoyed the most from this buffet were the freshly made (brought to my table direct from the kitchen) tandoori chicken and a basket of garlic naan. The chicken meat was smoky, juicy and tender and the garlic naan was crispy and soft and laden with garlic. The broccoli mushroom soup was nice and flavourful and complemented the naan. I could eat these 3 items alone next time. The staff was polite and very kind. A lovely experience. The feedback that I would offer to Management is that the chicken in the butter chicken tasted dry. Would also be nice to have a few more buffet items and papadum as their selection is small. Had a pleasant dinner here with a group of 6-7 people. The server recommended the buffet option, which was around $26 per person, and it turned out to be a good choice. In addition to a variety of hot dishes, salad, and other sides (I recommend the raita), it includes fresh naan (plain and/or garlic) brought to your table. There was plenty of selection for vegetarians in the group as well, with the paneer makhni being particularly good. Dessert options included gulab jamun, rasmalai, and some sort of cake. I went with the rasmalai and quite enjoyed it. They have a cocktail menu as well, and I had a pineapple bourbon sour, though I found it a bit underwhelming (too heavy on the pineapple juice) and would go with something else next time. The food was excellent. I was just thinking why we don't go here more often. This restaurant had very good quality naan, infact one of the best I've ever had. The restaurant had a rustic look, where they had some exposed brick walls and Indian art on the window sill. The room was well lit, which was nice to be able to see our food. The service I was a little surprised to see how slow it was. We were the only guests at the restaurant, the whole thing seemed to have take time for us to be checked on, and took a while for the bill to come. The food really makes this place exceptional! The flavours was brimming out of every bite. It was a little spicy, which I thought was amazing, as most places are a little apprehensive to be this bold in their flavour profiles. The naan was perfect! It was warm, crispy exterior, with soft, chewy interior, wow. Wow. Best naan. The chicken 65 was exploding with all kinds of flavours, sauces well, and good quality chicken breast that was cooked to perfection. The presentation on all our dishes were superb. The food is outstanding. Desserts were nothing amazing I've had better Raas malai and gulab jaman. Naan was fresh, protein portion is very good in each dish. Price is a little steep but worth it. Cozy, classy, and intimate, I found The Host with my nose while walking past the entrance, which is tucked away up some stars a bit off the street. Service was friendly and astute. The food was incredibly aromatic and rich in flavor. The samosas were fried to crispy, flaky perfection. For main, I had the Dilliwala Chicken, which I highly recommend - it's an original creation, a riff on butter chicken with some deep (albeit not to hot) spice. The garlic naan as fluffy and light and had a nice kick to it. Another thing I found especially amazing was the house-made chai. It was so good I had to order a second cup. Came here for lunch on Sunday. I wanted to go to the location on Wellington where i had thali lunch platter before during work lunch which was so amazing and great deal. So was disappointed they didnt have that here. But otherwise food was still very delicious. Got Lamb Roganjosh and tandoori chicken, they were both so delicious. Roganjosh sauce was amazing, subtly flavorful; just the lamb was a bit on the hard side. Including one glass of wine, garlic naan and cucumber salad, twas about $60 for 2 ppl, so $30 lunch, which is on the pricy side for a casual lunch but i find it worth it for a nice lunch every once in a while. I went with a group of colleagues to The Host for their lunch buffet, which only takes place on Fridays at their Yorkville location. Overall, I was really impressed by the flavours and quality of their dishes, although I cannot speak to its authenticity - I just thought that the food was delicious! Including tax and tip, the lunch buffet came up to $22, which seems reasonable for the food, atmosphere and location. As per standard buffet-style, you line-up and serve yourself from a variety of food stations. The buffet selection included salads and appetizers, hot entrees and dessert. Among my favourites were the saag paneer (spinach sauce with Indian cheese), tandoori chicken, and butter chicken. Everything was tasty and not overly spicy. The deep fried foods were also crowd-pleasers, and included samosas, spring rolls and coconut shrimp. There was an observation that, mid-way through the buffet, the type of samosa on offer changed and was different in quality depending on the batch. Other than that, hopefully the other dishes are generally consistent. Perhaps the selection of desserts could have been a bit better, and included some fruit, rice pudding and Indian doughnuts soaked in syrup. The servers were attentive in refilling glasses of water and collecting finished plates of food, and the ambience was quite fancy with the plush red velvet seats, white table cloths and gold accents. I would definitely return to The Host for their lunch buffet, given its good value and thoughtful selection of delicious and crowd-pleasing dishes. read more

I was craving some delicious Indian food (and didn't feel like making my own) so I thought I'd return to one of best places in Toronto for authentic Indian cuisine. It's been a while since I've been here and they now have a new location! They have a great menu with something for everyone including vegetarian and non veg options. Perhaps one of their more notable dishes is pictured here, the Butter Chicken - It still tastes the same as I remember! That being said, I myself like more of a creamy and very spicy sauce rather than a tomato heavy sauce, but I just 'modified' it to my own liking when I got home. Another great (and healthy) dish is the Daal or lentil dish; again, I'm used to eating very spicy food so I amped up the spice and also added some freshly squeezed lemon and coriander over top, as we Indians often do for this type of daal/lentil dish, trust me, these make all the difference! This is a wonderful and long standing establishment in Toronto with various locations in the GTA and now more options with @mantradonmills @hostrestaurants @bhaiscanteen @sanjeevmasalacompany ! The only FYI to all, the restaurant closes at 3pm and reopens at 4 several days of the week, so keep this in mind when ordering as if you order for 4pm let's say and expect it at that time, you'll have to wait for them to start preparing it after they open at 4. This is also a heads up for delivery services as today while I was there a driver encountered this very issue expecting to pick it up at 4, only to find that it had not yet been prepared which made him late for this delivery and ones thereafter. It may be helpful to put a notice on your website as to the time you'll accept a last order before you close, and similarly, you may wish to change the first pickup/delivery time to 4:15. I came here with my friends for summerlicious. There was a lot of choices compared to other pre-set summerlicious menus I've seen. Our table got the chicken korma, butter chicken, lamb roganjosh The wait for our food took a while but it was definitely worth it. The appetizers were so big that it could have been a main itself. The entrees were served super hot and came with lots of naan, chickpea curry/dal and a salad. Everything came in bronze-like bowls that were stackable - points for great presentation! I've been going to this location, on and off, for over 20 years. I've celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, first dates - you name it. Just saying all this, to establish that I know the food. I went in on New Years Eve for some takeout - a couple orders of butter chicken and naan. I walked in and said that I had ordered some food and the host barked at me, gruffly, to go to the back kitchen. Confused I headed back, only to realize that they assumed I was one of their "delivery partners" there to pick up a customer order. A much friendlier gentleman also realized the mistake and apologized profusely, while the host didn't say anything to me, or frankly, acknowledge my presence. I'd be curious to know if they would have made the same mistake with a different-looking person, but oh well. The food was not very good. It tasted nothing like it usually does and as far as I'm concerned this place has been the gold standard for butter chicken. This time, the sauce was borderline revolting and the chunks of tandoori chicken were clearly hastily cooked, missing the usual charred edges, that help give the dish it's flavour and character. The chicken itself tasted like it was off, as well. The naan was undercooked and overly thick. The rice was the only thing made properly and also the one thing I could have made at home myself. Overall a disappointing and somewhat degrading experience and if I go back, it would be to the Mississauga location. Went here for dinner recently with a group of friends. The food was adequate, but we found the level of service absymal. We felt abandoned by the waiters who were extremely slow and seemed to forget about our group intermittently. A word of advice, do not order the rum panna! I've drunk in a lot of dives in my life and have never tasted anything this uniquely disgusting. I've never been to the Host before in Toronto. I went to their Markham location once many years ago. I was working in the neighbourhood and looking for a new restaurant (new to me) to try out. I was very impressed with the layout of the restaurant, the tables, and the dishes. It was a very welcoming presentation. The music was at a nice level, and the mood in the restaurant was calm. I mentioned to the waiter that I must keep a gluten free diet, and he was very helpful in getting me food that I could eat. I ordered the Chicken Lababdar, and the Okra. The Chicken Lababdar was good, and the okra was slightly firm and cooked with onions and mango powder. I also got to try the eggplant, and it was also cooked perfectly and was a very nice dish. The place was clean and the waiter was very good as well too. I was very impressed with the menu. There were several options that were old favourites that I hadn't seen in many years, as well as the usual old reliable such as the butter chicken, and biryianis. I highly recommend this location. I have only tried a couple, but I was not disappointed. One of the better Indian food restaurants available through delivery apps. There were plenty of vegan options and gluten free dishes were also marked. We got the eggplant (which was totally unique and quite spicy), aloo gobi (had fresh tomatoes, which is a plus), the dal tadka (not thin like most, and well flavoured) and the curried mushroom and peppers (spicy but good). The onion bhaji was delicious especially the next day, though very greasy. We got 6 meals out of these 5 items for $70-$80. The food was greasy, but it's super hard to find it not greasy, and the flavours, selection and ease of picking vegan GF items was a pleasant surprise, I give the experience 4 stars. I was at the ROM & craving something different that I can sit to enjoy instead of the typical fast food. It was a short walk over & I was the first one sat for dinner which proved positive because people were already either calling in reservations or snagging tables within the first 15 minutes I was there. I ordered this deliciously flavorful chicken appetizer, the saffron rice, & the lamb entree. Everything was absolutely loved. If I had more time to stay on my travels, I would added dessert too! The servers were amazingly attentive. Even as it started getting busy, my water glass was always full & they checked on me appropriately but not pushy. The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is I'm still thrown off when places outside of America have you pay for the rice separately.
