Easily a half dozen members web surfing or answering their emails while parked on the workout machines....meanwhile staff drifts by as thought phones and offending members are invisible forcing you to have the negative encounter just to gain access to a machine and remind someone of the most basic gym etiquette. Same guy sitting on the same machine looking at the same dumb phone before and after my 30 min run today. It's ridiculous. Staff is disinterested, checked out, and barely there. There's a good reason their rating is so low. Recently canceled my membership due to my experience with the unfriendly people who play volleyball there and the negligent, incompetent staff putting money over doing the right thing. I literally showed Silvana, the awful, uncaring, unintelligent, clueless, checked-out waste of space of a program director screenshots of fellow volleyball players literally cyber-bullying me and she and her equally as scummy and dead-inside manager clearly didn't care and said their policy against cyber-bullying only applies to youth programs. Hopefully they'll get fired for being horrible at their jobs one day, but for now I highly recommend staying away from this hellhole. read more

The YMCA is actually really good. I go to use the gym and all the machines work the people working there are not super nice but they're not terrible which is why it's 4 stars. The membership is very well priced for all the things you can do I really like the prices. The pools are nice the locker rooms don't smell terrible and you can tell the place is well kept. The basketball courts are amazing the indoor and outdoor. The weights at the gym are so nice. When people are done using the machines they always clean them. If your new to the gym people are almost always ready to help you. A very good place in general just the people working there could be nicer read more

I love the Andover/North Andover YMCA. The gym is always clean and has everything you need -- plenty of machines, free weights, and open space to work out. The basketball court is awesome too, always well-kept and easy to grab a game or just shoot around. The staff is kinda mean/careless but other than that the whole place has a great vibe. read more

I used to rely on this YMCA for childcare and camp for my daughter when I was a young, frazzled Mom in the 90's. Fast forward to now--my daughter is grown & I've slowly worked my way back to running an 11 minute mile and I've lost 40 lbs so I figured I should expand my horizons by joining this Y. I went and used it for the first time today and was happily impressed! I used the elliptical trainer in the well appointed, very clean gym and was very happy with the whole experience. Tonight I used their online tool to schedule a yoga class. I'm thinking this was a great decision!! read more

You would think a 3 year renovation would make a place better, but not here. No place has hot/cold areas, has insanely high humidity all the time. If it's humid outside, interior surfaces will absolutely be wet. Equipment is continuously broken and signs listing them is unavailable. Child watch used to allow a lot more kids, from an age range perspective, but that got reduced for no reason. All drinking fountains were listed as "out of service", which isn't the best thing for a gym. (Just so happens to be the week they refilled the pools) Find a different gym, it will likely be better read more

The Andover / North Andover YMCA is a beautiful facility. It's always clean and I appreciate the huge selection of classes. Staff are always working hard, and I appreciate the Y's commitment to hiring young people and helping in their professional development. I also like being part of an organization that is committed to being there for all, and offers financial aid to those who would otherwise have no access. Go ELSEWHERE FOR SWIMMING LESSONS - I have overseen/attended swimming lessons here for a month, every Wednesday with both a 4yr old and 7yr old. I am going to try and make this short and sweet, my overall thoughts are - don't waste your time paying for swimming lessons here. The lessons on all levels have been nothing but unorganized. Once we waited around for an extra 10min while the employees scrambled to "find" the kids they were supposed to to be teaching. In general, the lessons are taught by adolescents and individuals in their early twenties -if that. Normally this wouldn't be a problem (I am 27yrs old myself) however the lack of authority, organization and enthusiasm to work with children has shown every single day that we have arrived at the swimming lessons. It's like all swimming instructor staff is left with no sense of direction by the higher-ups (who sit in a closet by the jacuzzi) by the way) The instructors are always changing -there is no stability for your child in regards to bonding and feeling safe with a specific swim instructor in the water (which is key for children who are terrified of the water). I have even witnessed on multiple occasions an actual swim instructor complaining about "getting splashed" .. is that a joke!? You'd think when you put a bathing suit on and get paid to be IN the water with children under the age of 7 you are obviously going to get wet. The instructors are actually afraid of getting their hair wet... I could go on and on about this place (overwhelming urine smell in "family bathroom") but this is supposed to be a review, not a roast session. I personally am not even a parent who has wasted my money on these "lessons" - unfortunately, I am a nanny who has watched the children I take here be less than thrilled to do swimming lessons, which makes sense to me completely after watching the struggle of the employees week after week. read more

Staff are friendly, the equipment are relatively newish, the size of the pools are great, but the facilities themselves thought are terrible. After their major re-branding effort, spending millions of dollars on a unified logo, theme, website...etc, they went so cheap on the actual implementation. For the past 2 years or so since they finished their renovation, the hot tub and steam shower breaks once a month. Once or twice a week, they display an out of towel apology sign. The Sauna had a broken handle with nails exposed for two weeks. Hot water is available depending on the day. The family bathroom is beyond filthy, its smells like urine everytime we go, water, hair and empty wrappers are everywhere on the floor. I won't be surprised if the the ceiling breaks one day, for real. This is only half of what I have to say about how filthy and under maintained this Y location is. read more

The location is nice. New equipment and warm pools(3 of them). Splash area for kids. Many interesting classes for kids like cooking, events: swim with mermaid.I have tried multiple classes and some instructors are not customer focus I would say :-) i used to go to reading YMCA and there all instructors were involved. If someone few mins late they would help to get weights or any small equipment. Here only few that I noticed who would do that. Also interaction with people I noticed they are more like corporate company that teach classes. Childcare hours only till 6:45pm. read more

The facility is nice. The upper floor has cardio and free weights, with three squat racks, two flat bench press racks, one incline bench press rack, one decline bench press rack. Dumbbell weights range from 5 to 120 - I don't remember the exact upper bound limit but over 105 for sure. The men's lock room is kinda too warm and moist. The spaces are super tiny. The biggest issue is with their WIFI - the following sites are banned in their network - financial institutions (which is fine I don't do my banking at gym) and all Apple related services, including but not limited to App Store, Apple Music (for real bro why you ban Apple Music). If you don't use Spotify you kind screwed there cuz their building is a complete isolation for bars - my T-Mobile and Verizon both show 1 bar at best. Other than that I have no complaints at all. A lot of energetic high schoolers and college students. A place with a lot of energy! read more

Two stars for the staff who have been nice and helpful from time to time. But I've been led to write this review because I have never experienced such poor gym etiquette in a weight area. I am a female lifter and I routinely am crowded by groups of teenage boys and other young men who do not seem to understand that I have a precarious amount of weight on my back (if I'm squatting) and that one wrong move could cause it to crush me. I've found that they also take up my personal space, regardless of whether the gym is busy or not, at almost every platform or squat rack. Usually one out of the three to six of them are actually lifting anything. This isn't a club house. Hang out downstairs if you just want to chat with each other. If I can reach out my arm and touch you while I'm lifting with a barbell then you are too close to me. If you could bump my bar while I'm squatting then you're too close. Do not use my squat rack to stretch while I am also using it. If I have to wait for you to move off the platform I AM USING to deadlift so I can add plates to my bar, then you're in my personal space. If I have to worry about you touching me when I bend over to deadlift, then you've crossed a line. I am sick of it. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to problems with gym etiquette here. I would appreciate if the YMCA staff would 1) intervene and ask these groups of guys to hang out downstairs and 2) post signs about gym etiquette in the weight area. For example, the staff could reduce their own work by telling these groups to put away their weights after use, which they frequently do not. read more

The day time front desk staff is really helpful and kind. My family and I are always greeted and engaged when we walk in. The afternoon/evening desk staff is generally rude and unhelpful. I try to avoid going there after 3pm. The gym is awesome and the classes are top notch. The free swim pool hours aren't super convenient, but we make the best of it. Yes they have updated this facility well, but the people here are such jerks! The traffic nots rule this place and they are not flexible at all. It is very difficult to find a place to workout in an open area. The trainers are always kicking you out of the green area, they have a room you are supposed to be able to sign up for but trainers put their names on the list for the whole day even when they aren't using it. This is my home pool. I learned to tread water in it. I did face-flops in it. I played in it. [I peed in it.] This was all well and good, back when, if you showed up without your porous and useless Spandex swimcap during the Free Swim, this one really cool lifeguard would stand up on a bleacher with a spare rubber cap full of water then DROP it on your head so it would invert and stick right to it...yes, those were the good days. As an adult attempting to swim laps, this is now an unremarkable and sometimes disconcertingly murky pool (piss? geriatric skin cells? lotion?) filled with senior citizens, Chinese ladies doing taichi in the water (not being racist; it's just a fact), and people from the past (parents' acquaintances, neighbors, friends' parents...you get the idea) who are really freaking awkward to run into in a Speedo. Plus, the membership fee is only slightly cheaper than that of most private gyms, and an effort to plead economic distress only equips you with a stack of papers that looks like a college application. I guess if I REALLY couldn't afford to swim here, I would have filled it out. But then I moved out of the town, and there was the end of that. But like I said; home pool, mustn't diss it to hard. To this day, walking in through the doors reminds me of my long-gone youth - days of gymnastics and ballet and tap and being a "Minnow" in swim class - summer days at camp, winter evenings with a grouchy parent waiting in a hail-covered car to pick me up...yes, yes, long live the MV YMCA. read more

This is only for the preschool swimming class. I just took my 3 kids for their first lesson, and I was mortified. They group by age. Not by their experience, which was scary. My 4 years old has had minimal experience in the water. The instructor was rude and loud. She shouldn't be allowed to work with small children. Telling a child to shut their mouth, and keep it shut, is not appropriate. I had told them my kids are just starting, getting comfortable with the water, and here she is, EXPECTING, for them to be comfortable to dip under water?!!! HOW?!!! I hated standing there watching the kids getting scowled at by her. Management needs to speak to this employee ASAP. read more

This was probably the best YMCA , I've ever been to. The building is beautifully built, reminds me of an Apple store with its glass exterior. It's a pretty big building so the basketball courts and pool are spread out which I like. I love the outdoor basketball court and the upstairs gym. This Ymca is Great love all the New workout Equipment and the staff are wonderful But the only thing is that I wish the locker room where bigger and the family pool was heat more now with the new fans above then because it makes the water much colder then I think it should be but still one of the best gyms around the area read more

The staff is super ignorant. My son was drowning during preschool swimming lessons. The instructors Jack, Nareila, lifeguard Laura didn't pay attention at all. I had to ran to save my kid. It was a horrible experience. I will never recommend anyone for YMCA North Andover. For swimming it is a big big 'No'. read more

Facility- no dirtier than others I be been too, Y or not. Showers, hot water are routinely broken so we don't bother and do that at home. Pools are fairly clean, especially for the volume of people they entertain, the water is warm which is a must have for us. Swim lessons- don't do it. The organization is horrible, they don't listen to parents concerns of descriptions of swimming ability and kids are either is a skill class too high or kept too low. Personally, it didn't appear that most instructors had any knowledge and I actually witnessed an instructor asking what to do if a child didn't want to put their face in the water (4-6yo). Lifeguards are less than responsive, myself and one other parent witnessed a ~3yo boy walk 1/4 the way around the pool to some stairs and attempt to go in by himself before we had him stop and then the lifeguard came over. Free well-being just watch your children of they are borderline swimmers, most lifeguards are very slow to respond. read more

If you are looking for a pool it has some good options but for a basic free weight workout after work the upstairs area was overrun and most everything was taken. Pretty much the most expensive gym in town too. Wish it were less crowded but for the crowds and the cost, it is not worth it. If there were a pools only option for a reasonable cost I would do it, but that doesn't appear to be available right now. read more

Positive: (1) About 1-month ago all cardio equipment was replaced on both levels. (2) The cleaning staff is very nice, very engaged and doing a good job. Mopping, towel service, landscaping, cleaning, etc. High marks for that team. (3) The "core" class is difficult and good to do. Negative: (1) First, members of the YMCA - clean up after yourself on the equipment!! If you use the machine, wipe it down please! (2) The same complaint about signing up for "classes." It is really annoying!!! From work I have to remember to sign up with only a 2-day window - at least let me sign up for the week from the previous weekend! I am running from work to the classes as is!! (3) Water fountain upstairs (weight room area) has been broken for a couple of months. (4) The pool lights ... surge? Flash? All I know is nobody even looks up anymore, but it is like having indoor lightning flashes in the pool area. The first time it was happening I got nervous - I thought it was me seeing things... (5) Free weights. Yes, 25+10=35. I would still like to have some 35 pound plates. (6) The machine weight/strength machines are terrible. This is the 2nd time I have signed my child up for the swim lessons...as we really need to get her more comfortable in the water before summer. The prices have changed since last year...thought I was signing her up for a month of swim lessons (at least 4 lessons). Yet we were advised no lessons during spring break week...I find $95 for 3 lessons a bit outrageous...these are 30 min classes keep in mind at least 10 mins are freestyle 5 in the beginning 5 at the end. My toddler is in the Parent/Child class..."Water Exploration" where they literally sing nursery rhymes but are given no instruction on the movement to accompany the song...I have emailed staff twice without response. I gather they have enough interest in these classes they dont care if you are disappointed or have questions. My husband also said the pool is dirty...the edges need some serious scrubbing...oh and you gotta love watching all the infants chewing on the rubbers duckies knowing class after class the kids handle them and do the same. read more

It's a very family friendly sports club with lots of programs and activities constantly in session.

The hot tub has had blood in the corner under the mirror. It hasn't been cleaned up in well over a month, despite telling four different staff members on four different occasions. It is dried into the grout, and is still visible on the tiles. It shouldn't take this much effort to grab some bleach, and scrub the grout and tiles-it is a health hazard. read more

So every aspect of the Y is fine, except for the basketball courts. Every time I come, there are practically always classes that come in and take up the whole gym, it would make much more sense to schedule half the gym to open court and the other half dedicated to classes. read more

The facility and staff are always helpful. You feel welcome no matter what time of day it is. The machine and equipment are in great shape. The family pool area and family changing area make it great for families. We love basketball and pickle ball games and more. My family and I really enjoy the Y all year round. read more
