Suddenly today (July 13 around 1:30 PM), we were told our daughter couldn't use the slide without passing a swim test -- something we were never informed about, and something that's not listed anywhere online. What's worse is that the rules seem to change depending on which lifeguard is working. When I asked for a full list of pool rules (just like I previously asked for slide/indoor pool hours), no one -- not the lifeguards or front desk staff -- could give me any answers. The so-called "manager" on duty refused to give her name, was incredibly rude, and wouldn't explain why the rules had changed or where I could even find them. Her only explanation was, "New year, new rules." That's not an acceptable - she was extremely unprofessional, disrespectful and rude! For the record, I even called in June to ask specifically about the indoor slide and was told nothing about swim tests or new restrictions. YMCA members deserve consistency, transparency, and basic respect. Right now, that's not what we're getting at the Marblehead location.

Someone is going to fall in one of these rooms especially with the wet floors, as the only place to sit is on the toilet seat to get dressed. An 18" bench right outside each shower would be a big help. He comes home having learned new skills, song, words, animals, good behaviors, etc that I know for 100% have come from her style of gentle nurturing and support. If it was possible to keep him in her class through his daycare years I would, and I've tried:) She has taught him how to interact "gentle" with his peers and others, giving him and his classmates so much love it's expanded his horizons exponentially. He rushes to see her every day and has meant so much. As we enter into the last week of a wonderful year, I couldn't imagine leaving a review without recognizing the amazing staff that greet every family with so much enthusiasm and vigor each day, Ms Patty and Ms Andrea bring the kids in pumped for a fun day where they feel so loved. Abby and Joan and Ally in the preschool class are exceptional at nurturing young minds and young big emotions with our 4 yr old, helping him articulate and express his interests, make friendships and be respectful to themselves and others. Finally the swim staff, Brendan & Danielle who have helped generate a love of the water, safety, fun and excitement are incredible. Don't send your kids here, there is an investigation forthcoming. I have seen other small children being pulled up from the floor by their arms and being called names. This place is rife with abuse.

While this location seems stuck in petty, ugly behavior, the rest of us move forward choosing dignity and decency. I was contacted regarding an alleged outstanding balance, even though my bank records clearly show successful withdrawals for both my membership and my daughter's swim lessons. When I disputed this and provided documentation, both services were immediately canceled and a refund was refused. The issue was escalated to the Regional Business Manager, who acknowledged receipt of the documentation but continues to request additional bank statements in order to "investigate," further delaying what should be a simple refund. At this point, the issue is not missing information but unnecessary delays. I am still waiting for refunds for canceled services and expect this matter to be resolved promptly.

They have a rock climbing gym, a huge gymnastics center, a pool with great hours for family and individual swim and the rates are affordable. The gym itself is off set from the things that the younger crowd is doing and they offer tons of activities year round for kids and families. They have surprisingly ample parking and easy access from that to the facility rain or shine. The staff here is amazing and always willing to offer help and guidance and are super friendly. One of the best YMCAs I have been to.

Hadn't been back here since before the pandemic, so I was amazed at the complete makeover and 100%…read moreimprovement of this place! Back then, they stupidly had a huge men's locker room on one floor, and a similarly huge boys' locker room on another floor---and I'm assuming, ditto for a women's and a girls' LR. In other words, huge waste of space, since all the actual workout space was crammed into a claustrophobic cellar space with low 8ft ceilings, and the equipment was pretty old and fairly rickety. NOW, however, they've combined the locker rooms and have a palatial high ceilinged 2nd floor workout space with excellent and all new equipment including something I had never seen in a Y before: Concept ski ergs! (Google it if you have no idea what I'm talking about.) Said equipment is not all that intelligently laid out, though---but compared to how it used to be, no complaints here! Locker room looks pretty much the same but the showers and restroom are nicely redone. Not so crazy about their cardio equipment, though. All their stationary bikes are the geriatric recumbent ones, with only one ancient Keiser on the floor. They have Precor treadmills and ellipticals that have nice big screens with the wonderful "interactive terrains" similar to Life Fitness's current models found at other Ys---but unlike the LF machines, these Precor machines' video screens are buggy as hell, constantly freezing up and having to be reset within 15 minutes of starting your workout! Also, the one and only (coed) sauna they have, while being brand new and beautiful, sitting right next to the pool, BUT---is uselessly weak. Even on the highest settings, it feels like it only gets to maybe 160F tops. Nothing like the Cambridge Y's sauna which is around a divine 200F, or the Malden Y and Waltham Y's saunas which are closer to a still-passable 180F. I suppose it's meant more for people who just want to dry out after swimming, not for anyone who wants to really SWEAT, which is the whole purpose of a sauna. A good thing about this Y is that it's one of the all too few that stays open until 9pm on Fridays. Sadly, on Saturdays and Sundays they close at a lousy 4pm, just like the Cambridge Y.
