Beware of this unprofessional and dishonest clinic. I visited this clinic a while ago but am sharing this now to warn others. My experience with Dr. Andrew Menkes was unprofessional and painful. Medical Negligence: The nurse forgot to prep the anesthesia and did not communicate with the doctor. Dr. Menkes proceeded to inject the keloid treatment without numbing, which was incredibly painful. Poor Manner: When I asked why a shot was still sitting there unused, he didn't apologize. Instead, he tried to shift the blame to me, saying I should have told him. Billing Issues: To top it off, the billing was incorrect. They used a CPT code for more than 7 lesions when I only had a single keloid treated. Please be very careful if you choose to go here. Avoid this location as it's a complete rip off. I was charged $400 for a 5 min appointment to have a doctor look at a mole with some magnifier. When I called and asked about the charge, I didn't get any clarification from the receptionist nor the billing department so I called again and talked to the manager, Garrett. He told me there is a "New Patient" charge which applies to first time patients and it's for registration and blah blah. Additionally I was told that my insurance is not good, I have a high deductible and I should reach out to insurance. I have United Health Care which is perhaps the best provider in the country and they covered/paid about $150 of the total bill. Anyways, all along my question was why I got charged $400 for a 5 min appointment and why was this not communicated to me prior to my appointment? Garrett said everything he could to dodge the question. His best answer was these are normal prices and we don't charge anymore than other places. I made it clear that I don't agree with the charge and don't want to pay it, $400 doesn't seem to be a fair charge for that appointment. After a while, I received a call from the billing department asking if I want to pay my portion of the bill ($250) which I said no because I don't agree with the charge and I had spoken to Garrett. I asked her to reach out to Garrett or have him give me a call to discuss this. I never received a call and after a few days I got a letter from a collection agency giving me a deadline to pay the remaining balance. So I was forced to pay the amount that I never agreed to pay or was even told about it before hand. This was never a matter of money or payment, rather just a question of why a $400 charge for a 5 min appointment? What service was provided that was worth $80/min? Was a cancer cured or a surgery done? In fact none! Garrett seemed incompetent and failed to explain how the service I received was worth that much. He failed to resolve this issue and when I asked why was this not communicated at the time of checkin, he had no explanation except the cost can vary. A simple solution would be to give people a minimum cost they should expect to pay and a maximum cost based on after visit notes. read more

My general practitioner doctor referred me to this clinic. Unfortunately, this clinic's office staff are very rude. I arrived 30 minutes early. The receptionist was rude. After I wrote my review, the office person, Meredith Lou (Lew) called me and I explained to her that I felt uncomfortable. After my 2nd appointment, I called to make a follow up appointment as Dr. Menkes had told me. READ THIS FIRST!! BE AWARE OF THIS CLINIC AND OWNER DR MENKES!! Very unprofessional and left my skin in a worse situation than when I started. The procedure sold was pointless and costed thousands of dollars. It added a extra sagging skin on my chin that hasn't gone away yet. He refused to do anything to fix it and only referred me to his colleague who wants to do the right procedure I came to the office for and thousands of dollars more. Save your time and money!!! I've only had one appointment with Dr Menkes but was impressed. He's very thorough and his staff were all friendly and helpful, but the main reason I'm giving 5 stars is because he's the first dermatologist that has ever connected the dots between my symptoms and investigated whether there's some underlying issue, rather than just prescribing a couple of topical creams for each symptom. read more

Around this time last year, I was refered to this clinic through my general pracitioner because I was showing symptoms of eczema. I was hopeful getting the appointment with this clinic after getting the referral. Now it is just distasteful to think about. Given the circumstances of the pandemic at that point, my appointment was a video call. I spoke to the Menkes staff and they were helpful. They required photos for the tele-visit. I took all necessary photos for the appointment. When it came time for my appointment with Dr.Menkes, he came off as very unprofessional. Absolutely rude, to be honest. I asked him if he wanted to see pictures that the staff asked me to take. Instead, he just wanted me to stand in front of the webcam so he could see the skin, which he noted was inflammed, but failed to realize that it was actually highly infected. I offered to share the detailed photos but they were refused. He went on to talk about Swedish womens' skin and how that is different than my skin. Which is a bizarre way to approach things. Then, he suggested I come into the office the following week to get a Cortisol shot (which is a rather extreme course of action, and one that completely neglects the infection). He prescribed me a small amount of steroid cream that was obviously insufficient to treat the affected area. I followed up immediately to request an appointment but I was told that he was going on vacation and had no availablity. Luckily, I found another dermatologist that treated me. She took time to figure out my situation and she was rather quick to undertand that the eczema had become infected and prescribed antibiotics and steroid creams that quickly helped the situation. I had a successful recovery in a short time. One star is too much for him, but his staff seemed competent. read more

Dr. Menkes is not only the best dermatologist I have ever seen, but also is among the best doctors I, or members of my family, have seen. Dr. Menkes diagnosed and successfully removed my SCC well before anyone else, including doctors, could even notice it. SCC is not as dangerous as melanoma, yet it kills thousands annually. Diagnosing early, and more importantly proper removal are key to survival. That was 30 years ago. Subsequently, I saw him for follow ups and variety of other minor issues, and recommended him to many friends and relatives all of whom have been very happy patients of his for years! I moved to SoCal 10 years ago. I have access to great dermatologists where I live in Beverly Hills and have been happy seeing them. All are affiliated with Cedar Sinai or UCLA and are known to be the best in the field. But, from overall quality of work no one has come close to Dr. Menkes. I am going to make an appointment to see him for a semi annual checkup even though my insurance will not cover it fully and I have to fly up to NotCal just for this visit. He is well worth it! I have visited Dr. Menkes with two problems. One problem was a treatment of a benign growth on a finger, which was successfully addressed by the means of cryotherapy (well, he sprayed a finger with liquid nitrogen -- takes about 30sec and is impossible to do wrong). Another problem was an in-grown inflamed toenail. Having had a look at it, he proposed that I take antibiotics. Not cleaning and disinfecting the soar, not figuring out why the inflammation has occurred. That was probably the most... dubious treatment a doctor has ever proposed to me. I started to take his prescription drugs, yet, there was no result (though, my stomach experienced some nasty side effects). Eventually, I had to do some minor surgery on my toenail myself, and getting out an extraneous body that caused inflammation from the soar had resolved my problem -- the toe started to heal and has healed completely eventually. It is very unlikely that I resort to Dr. Menkes' services again. P.S. Do not give them your email, unless you want to get unwanted ads from them. read more

Fantastic office. Highly recommend Dr Menkes, Dr Whang and Dr Soohoo. Dr Menkes diagnosed my daughter's mycoplasma pneumonia 3 years ago, after her pediatric Dr was stumped by the rash she had (she also had a cough and swollen hands and feet). Dr. Menkes kept the office open past normal hours that evening, to see her. The medication choice the pediatric Dr was leaning toward required my daughter go on Prednisone, which is a drug I want to avoid unless absolutely necessary. Dr Menkes looked at her body rash, as said "no, she needs to be on an antibiotic, not a steroid"! Her rash and cough cleared up within the 10 days. I'll go no where else again, when I or my family have a tricky skin condition! read more

My husband went to Dr. Menkes for the removal of a very small fat nodule (one quarter of an inch lipoma). The scar he made is surprisingly large (two inches). After the surgery he said he would send the nodule to a pathologist (at UCSF) as a matter of routine, but was not worried about it. To our surprise Dr. Menkes charged $237 for pathology, and UCSF charged an additional $250. We contacted our insurance and were told that we should ask Dr. Menkes to credit the pathology because of him mentioning he was sending the lipoma to an "outside" lab, and because he had never said he would do any pathology himself. After a lot of back and forth with Dr. Menkes' office, we were told Dr. Menkes would not credit the pathology... and that he noted in the file that he had looked at the lipoma. This feels very wrong. In total he charged $1,539 for this 10 minute procedure, and UCSF pathology an other $250. read more
