Last week, I went to the Opening Reception for the South Shore Art Center's current Media Mix…read moreexhibition (one of my pieces is in the show!) What a lovely evening! And, crowded, too -the entire gallery space was packed! There was food, beer, wine, live jazz music, awards, and lots of beautiful artwork! :) If you have never been, there are basically 2 main gallery spaces, the Bancroft Gallery & the Dillon Gallery. The Bancroft gallery is the larger space where Media Mix is being shown. I like this space very much! It has large walls on one side of it, and shorter walls on the other side with ample lighting. The walls seem to be some kind of upholstered plywood which makes for easy positioning of paintings. (No worrying about hiding nail holes!) There is also a hardwood floor which makes the entire space look modern and clean. The Dillon Gallery is smaller and darker. There was an exhibit of Italian paintings in there, which I enjoyed very much! This was really my first involvement with the South Shore Art Center, but overall, it seems to be a great place to view and learn about art! Everyone I met there is very friendly, and happy to meet local artists. It is also located in a beautiful town! It was also cool that they had a temporary exhibit in partnership with a local high school, where students got to display and present their work. So not only is this gallery an artistic gem, but it's also community-oriented. Super awesome find right by the Lincoln commuter rail. If you're in the area, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. She responded to emails immediately and made planning the event easy and stress free, while working around my schedule and needs. She also worked with me to choose an image that would appeal and not intimidate our over 60 crowd who have never held a paint brush. We had a brunch and paint event that was a huge success. Every guest that attended told me afterwards what a great time they had. This is a perfect cozy place to have fun, relax and discover the artist skills you never knew you had!

My loss but now I know and will most certainly be back. I had gotten word from my cousin Diana who is a wonderful artist in her own right, that a Rhode Island artist by the name of Anthony Tomaselli had a show here. I promptly drove over...just a 1/2 mile or so from downtown Hingham proper and there it was. It's a small, pretty and intimate space. A man named Kevin (the owner?) greeted me and was happy to tell me about the current Tomaselli exhibit. My cousin had studied under him in Providence RI some years ago and keeps up with his work. Tomaselli was new to me but I liked what I saw of his moody oils. According to Kevin,Tomaselli's newer works were the several paintings in a brighter, more colorful palate...lots of boats and New England seascapes. Other paintings were lovely but more muted. There were a few cityscapes as well. These brighter colored oils were my favorites particularly of the boats. Kevin let me know that he welcomes folks who treat South Street Gallery like a museum and who just want to come in a look at the art. No upselling here which was refreshing. That said, the prices on some of the Tomaselli art was in reach and frankly I wouldn't mind owning one of the boat pieces. I was happy to note that South Street Gallery does framing work and seemed to have a wide selection of frames on hand. On occasion I have new things I want to hang. Unlike my husband who believes one should learn the art of framing (he's not bad!), I would rather leave that to a professional. If you are in the Hingham area, it is worth a stop in this lovely gallery. They have a website where you can sign up to hear about new shows and also an Instagram page where you find the same information. The Tomaselli exhibit will be there through the end of August.

We pulled in gravel parking lot so not always ideal for strollers but what is now a days haha! We walked in saw ducks, goats, peacocks, rabbit, horses, donkey, alpca, sheep!
