I've been with Dr. Thomas since both of us were in our 20's. I actually followed her from her first practice to Sutter. Dr. Thomas' first practice allowed her to do some fertility work. Sutter didn't, so she guided us to a fertility clinic. Dr. Thomas also has managed one straight forward pregnancy and two trickier pregnancies. When I went into pre-term labor with child number three, she popped into Alta Bates since she was out to dinner in the area, just to check in on me as well as help the on call OB/GYN manage my delivery. She came in and soothed me, told me not to worry. Her calming presence helped distill the anxiety the other doctor had accidentally brought out. It's been 19 years and I'm still Dr. Thomas' patient. Over the years, I've discovered a couple other girlfriends have her as their doctor as well. All of us rave about her. In recent years, I've been diagnosed with cancer. Dr. Thomas has kept tabs on my health, even checking in periodically. None of it has to do with my gynecological health, just her genuine concern over my well-being. I've had my share of drs who don't listen, but that's never been my experience with Dr. Thomas. I wouldn't have remained her patient for 20 years if that had been the case. read more

Once she received it (which was what I wanted to do) she tried to talk me out of it. 2nd opinion, Dr Thomas. I explained the situation. She said; Let's discuss options Let's have an MRI to be clear Let's schedule Nothing was outside of her scope of knowledge or comfort. Now all is well and I am completely happy. I really wanted to like Dr. Thomas. The first time I met with her - my husband was there too and this was our first ultrasound at around 9 weeks along in my pregnancy. She seemed very friendly, open to any questions we had etc. But as the pregnancy went on I found myself becoming less 'into' her. She often seemed bothered by my questions - usually about the necessity of different recommendations. She did reach out to me on a few occasions when she wasn't on call and there were some complications during the pregnancy for which I had to stay in the hospital overnight for observation. It's difficult to describe the reason why I'm less than excited about her but there is one example that I believe sums it up. When I gave birth to my son she wasn't able to be there - funny enough it was her birthday! When I went in to meet with her for my 6 week check up she never commented on the birth - nothing! We had worked up to this whole process that she couldn't be there for, and then she didn't even seem interested. It must have been on my chart that I'd had a 5.5 hour unmedicated labor with only 22 minutes of pushing - quite remarkable especially for first baby, but she said nothing! Her silence was amazing. read more

*Note: This review is not about Dr. Thomas, but her office staff. I have called, literally, FIVE TIMES over the past two days in an attempt to make an appointment. The first four times I called I was immediately placed on hold. Once, I was hung up on, another time it rang to no end, and two other times I waited on hold for well more than five minutes and no one ever came back on the line! Today was the last straw! I called late in the day thinking they may be less busy and maybe I would only hold a few minutes. Well, guess what? I was placed on hold again immediately. Then, after holding for several minutes I was somehow transferred to the receptionist's voice mail where I was informed the office was closed and that I'd need to call back tomorrow! How does anyone ever get in to see these doctors unless they have HOURS to wait on hold!? I can't imagine what a circus their front office must be like. Needless to say I won't be seeing any of the doctors at this office. What a shame. read more

Thumbs up, both of 'em, for Dr. Thomas. I hate doctors, I mean, I really dislike most of them. I've had a few really bad ones, lots of so-sos, and 3 that I think are exceptional. Dr. Thomas is one of them. Her bedside manner is warm and caring. She remembers you, what's been going on with you, i.e., she bothers to read your chart before she comes in the room. She's gentle with PAP smears, she handled my D&C after a failed pregnancy with professionalism and caring. What is best about Dr. Thomas is her balance of experience and skill as a doctor, as well as her personality. I trust her quite a bit as a doctor, more than most. And as I said above, her bedside manner is about as good one could want. I'm hoping she'll help us deliver a baby one day. I'll trust her with my body until then. And probably after too. read more

I am sitting in the lab waiting room almost exactly a year to the date of my hardest miscarriage, and I am continuing to be effected by the care from Dr. Thomas. Even though the last time I heard from her was during an 9 week ultrasound where my husband and I learned that the baby we were so excited about did not have a heartbeat. Dr Thomas was in the room with us and told us to get more blood work done and we would see. My husband and I waited in agony through the weekend and still hadn't heard anything. We naively held onto hope. Maybe I didn't know my last period date accurately or a list of other possible things ran through our heads. It drove me crazy and I called until I talked to an on-call doctor and she told me that my baby wouldn't grow anymore and soon I would have a miscarriage. I never heard from Dr. Thomas. She didn't follow up at all. And now I sit here waiting for over an hour in a lab, because my new labs (the labs for my healthy 28 week old baby girl) are being held up because she never cancelled 12 week pregnancy lab for the pregnancy I lost. I had a great experience with Dr Thomas and I would recommend her to everyone! The family doctor that I have been seeing for two years unexpectedly quit just before I had to see her for my annual check-up and I had to find someone else in a short period time. I kept looking over the list of my insurance covered doctors in the area but most of them had worse than average reviews, so I was very happy to come across Dr Thomas! I was also surprised that I was able to see Dr Thomas in a reasonable period of time (1-2 weeks) because I had an experience with other doctors who wouldn't take new patients for a few months. I was worried about meeting a new doctor but there was no need to. The front desk was nice (although I had to do lots of paperwork haha), and Dr Thomas appeared to be very genuine and warm. She offered me to get HPV test (which I was never been offered before) and a whole experience was very pleasant. I liked the fact that Dr Thomas was concerned about the time passed after my last check-up. I didn't know that but appearantly if it's less than a year, then my insurance wouldn't cover my visit, so it was good to know that my doctor cared about me being billed extra. As a contrast of another reviewer, my results came in mail in a very short time. A month later I also got a bill from the lab and although my insurance provider is not that great (Great West), it was only $15 total! I could not be happier about my whole experience. It's good to have a good and caring doctor in the neighborhood! In addition: I also found out from Dr Thomas that if a regular pap-smear and HPV test together come negative, then you don't need to see your gyn for another three years! (I think you need to fall under the certain age category though). I thought it was great. Why didn't nobody tell me that before? read more

I really like this doctor. Three things should be present in a doctor. They should be competent, confident, and caring. She meets all of these marks without a doubt. She made me feel really comfortable in what I thought could have been a scary GYN situation. Two thumbs up from me. Dr. Thomas has been my OBGYN for a year and I couldn't be happier. She's very knowledgeable but doesn't impose and actually lets you weigh on things and make your own decision which I find extremely rare among physicians. She also takes the time to explain everything thoroughly to you and is very patient in answering any questions and/or concerns you may have. She even reached out to me personally once after I called in to complain about some minor discomfort I felt after an IUD insertion attempt. I'm usually scared of doctors- because well, they are doctors after all, but I feel very safe and comfortable with Dr. Thomas and highly recommend her to anyone who's looking to receive care from someone who genuinely cares about her patient's well-being. read more

Dr. Thomas has been my OB/Gyn for about 8 years. She is extremely busy but she always returns my calls, sometimes as late as 9pm. I feel she is warm and caring and extremely bright and knowledgeable. When I had my baby I wanted to have a natural birth, and took a hypnobirth course. Dr. Thomas was very supportive of my wishes, and encouraged me. Things didn't work out that way, and Dr. Thomas came in to perform the Cesarean section herself. .I'm sure she cannot do that for everyone, but she probably tries. I see her as someone who works very hard, is very dedicated to her work and who cares deeply about her patients. As for the office staff, they have improved immensely since I started seeing her at this office (I followed her from a prior office.) read more

I've a huge fan of Dr Thomas. She was my OBGYN for my first son and actually delivered him, too, and hopefully she'll be delivering my next son. She has a calm, soothing disposition that puts me at ease and assures me everything is fine throughout the entire pregnancy. She comes across as educated, experienced and I fully trust her judgment. I usually go to the Berkeley office, which is clean and fine, but prefer the brand new Orinda office where parking is free and easier. Everyone in front of office is very nice (huge improvement from the nasty receptionist they had 3 years ago), and they have a very competent nurse practitioner. I've never had a problem getting an apt or a call back right away. It is a bummer that it's not guaranteed we'll get her to deliver our son, but between the 5 other doctors in the office, I'm sure it'll work out just fine. read more

Dr. Thomas has been an exceptional doctor for me, caring for me before and during two pregnancies. I had complications resulting in a premature birth (22 weeks) and death of the fetus, prior to seeing Dr. Thomas. She gave me the care, attention and engagement I needed when I got pregnant with my now 5-year-old son, and then did the same with my next pregnancy. She was warm, caring, knowledgeable and professional, both during my routine prenatal office visits and in performing surgery during my high-risk pregnancies/at delivery. Dr Thomas delivered my baby last year. She was just the doctor i needed for someone who is nervous about exams, induction, had a complicated nausea/other issues ridden pregnancy. Making my rounds to visit with different ob's before I deliver. Dr. Thomas was the first person I felt really comfortable with at the sutter office. Her first words upon entering the room were to ask how "I" was personally doing. I have felt others at the sutter office don't seem to listen to my individual choice to opt for minimal medication and simple coping methods. Thomas was the first to shift the conversations from convincing me why a medication was beneficial to weighing the effectiveness of different non-medicated options. read more

I really also wanted to have a great experience with Dr. Thomas after getting a recommendation from a friend about her and also reading a lot of reviews, but I guess we just didn't really "click". At first I thought she was very nice, but as things went it on I felt as though she did not seem interested or in any way "excited" that this was my first child and that I had NO idea what to expect or look forward to as things developed. I should have known from the very first meeting that she was not for me when she went straight into the ultrasound without asking if I wanted my husband there, when I asked whether someone could go grab my husband from the waiting room, she looked at me questioningly and replied, "do you think he would like to be here for this?" hmmm... no, I think the waiting room is much more exciting than knowing anything about the BABY IN HERE! Any-hoo, that weird disconnect aside, we always felt as though we were rushed, there was no "how are you feeling" or "what changes are you experiencing" talk it was all, "everything looks fine, this is when you need to come in again", no real details or interest. Over all, we were very disappointed with most of the visits to the 2999 Regent Street clinic, our waiting times were ALWAYS over 30mins (a couple of times we had to wait over an hour) and then when we finally saw someone they were in a hurry to get us out. Soooo, long story short, I am not sure whether it is was Dr. Thomas' fault or the disorganization of the clinic that gave us zero connection with most of the Dr.s practicing there. There was just never any time for them to spend with us because they were always behind schedule or losing our paperwork or results (which happened multiple times!). read more

Dr. Angelyn Thomas was my OB, and was fantastic. I had switched over from another doctor that I didn't care for. I'd gone to the other OB twice and the wait times were really long with no apology. I waited almost an hour for my first appointment with Dr. Gentry and the same amount of time at my second appointment. My husband was really upset because I felt very nauseous and dizzy and it was not fun sitting in a waiting room chair for that long. I switched to Dr. Thomas and recognized the difference immediately. The staff were very friendly. The most I waited the whole pregnancy was about 40 minutes once, and Dr. Thomas apologized (I don't mind waiting once in a while, I know it's unavoidable). A couple times I didn't even wait at all, they said my name as soon as I walked through the door. At Dr. Gentry's, I had gotten a ton of papers in a folder, most of them ads and 5/6 of them useless. At. Dr. Thomas', I got only relevant information to read through. She also told me to take the DHA supplements, which Dr. Gentry had not mentioned in two appointments. PLEASE NOTE that Dr. Thomas used to be an OB in Dr. Gentry's office coincidentally enough, but switched to the new practice sometime before January 2009 so older postings about her office are likely about when she was in Dr. Gentry's practice. All through the pregnancy I felt Dr. Thomas had a good level of concern about things I wanted to talk about, and took the time to ask me if I wanted to talk about anything. She did a technique in her office at my weekly visit to pretty much induce me due to medical reasons, and she said "if you do actually go into labor tonight, I'm on duty tonight so I'll get to see you at the hospital". My labor at the hospital was long and she had to leave at the end of it, but she was there through most of it and was very supportive, calm, and helpful. She listened to me when I still had pain at 6 months post-birth and figured out what was going on. I'd recommend her to anyone. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Thomas for one year. I am very happy with the relationship that we've developed over this time and extremely pleased with the care I've received. I recently gave birth to my first child and experienced some complications. Dr. Thomas respected my wishes to seek out other birth options, while continuing to support me and provide me with routine pregnancy care. Towards the end of the pregnancy when I was starting to get a little stressed out about things not going the way that I had hoped, she was very responsive. I wanted to minimize interventions as much as possible and Dr. Thomas provided me with a good sounding board for determining what was safe and reasonable. I felt like she was a good partner in helping me make informed decisions and allowing me to explore all of my options without pressuring me. Preferring to allow my pregnancy to continue as long as possible without intervention past my due date, I was aware that Dr. Thomas would be going out of town for her planned holiday. I happily understood that Dr. Thomas' office colleagues would provide continuity of my care. This was the case, but Dr. Thomas went above and beyond what I felt was necessary by calling to check in on me twice while technically on vacation. It was certainly not something that I expected of her but it was very comforting to know that she was following my progress during a difficult time. I occasionally experience long waits when being seen for office visits but don't think these periodic delays are out of the ordinary compared with current standards for medical offices in general. read more

I was disappointed by Dr. Thomas' practice in several ways. The wait was long both times I've been there (20-40 minutes in the lobby and another 15 - 20 minutes in the exam room). More importantly though, I don't feel like Dr. Thomas listened to my concerns. Once I called her voice mail number with a question. The recorded message says she will get back within 24 hours, but it took 2 weeks for her to call me back. I also tried leaving a message with the "advice nurse" that the reception put me through to, but never heard back from that call. My last visit lasted only 10 minutes after all of the waiting and I left feeling my concerns and comments about my health were brushed off and ignored. read more

Hands down the most incompentent front office I have ever had to deal with. I couldn't even get a pre authorization for a simple iud. Too much frustration. As for Dr. Thomas, I didn't get a feeling she gave a crap about my health at all. It was the first time I saw her and she asked no questions about me. I never got to my Appointment. I waited an hour and Dr Thomas came in and introduced herself and walked back out said she would be right back. The medical assistant, Cecilia, comes back in and rushes me through signing up for the online health portal. I ask if something is wrong with my appointment and the medical assistant replies with, "yea she is really behind. But I don't even know how you were scheduled we only usually see our pregnant patients around this time....but it's ok!" She leaves and I get up and start walking out. I see the Dr chatting with an MA and keep going. What a waste and to be treated so rudely read more

Dr. Thomas was great. Very thorough, funny, professional, and put me at ease. This might not be fair, but I do wish she'd had children herself (if she's to be one's OB, too, not just GYN). After going through childbirth, I definitely feel that an OB who has been through it will have a different understanding of the experience... But for GYN I feel very happy with with her! Only reason for four stars instead of five is that it took EIGHT weeks for my labs to come back, which is just ridiculous. If it were abnormal, that would simply be unacceptable and dangerous... I had a terrible experience with Dr. Thomas with my first pregnancy. Had I listened to her terrible advice, we would have lost my daughter. I experienced a rare complication and was referred to East Bay Perinatal for weekly monitoring. I became very uncomfortable with lack of access to my doctor (I usually only saw a technician) and what seemed to be a worsening problem. When I raised the issue with Dr. Weiss and Dr. Thomas, they told me not to worry, that they were excellent doctors and that I needed to stop doing internet research. They were both very condescending, and rushed me when I had questions or concerns. But I kept asking questions of my technician, who suggested I contact a doctor at one of the universities for a second opinion. I asked Dr. Thomas for a referral, and she was irate that the technician dared question the Doctor's expertise. She vowed to see that the tech was reprimanded/disciplined and was clearly more concerned about ego than about the health of my child. Instead of waiting for the referral she clearly did not want to give, I found another doctor myself, who listened patiently, answered all my questions, and ordered new tests. He discovered my child was developing a serious heart condition as a result of the complication, and recommended additional safeguards in case she needed to be born early. Those safeguards resulted in her being born by urgent c section within two weeks of my first contact with the second doctor. My daughter would have died had I listened to Drs. Weiss and Thomas. read more

I stumbled across Dr Thomas' page while looking for a new ob-gyn. I was a patient of Arzou Ahsan's and Dr. Thomas was the on-call doctor who delivered my second baby. Long story short, Dr. Thomas totally disappointed me. Actually, she went beyone disappointing me- I don't think she really knows what she's doing if you are looking for a natural vaginal birth with no epidural. I had my first baby in s.f. at St. Luke's and they were awesome (did my vaginal exams while in labor in the water while i was in the birthing tub, let me deliver on my hands and knees, didnt need to wear an i.v. and had a wireless fetal monitoring system). They knew how to support a woman birthing with no pain meds. Dr Thomas came into my room when i was about to give birth and told me i had to turn over onto my back, because it wasn't safe to deliver my baby on my hands and knees. she actually said i was putting my baby in danger. I told her i had done it before that way and the doctors and nurses seemed to think it was a great way to make the baby come out. She kept insisting and i refused to turn over- there was no way i could physically turn over or manage the pain of the contractions and pushing the baby out on my back. so she totally panicked. she starting screaming and made my husband flip me over as the head came out. I have since done a lot of research and pretty much any book you pick up says that hands and knees is a great way to give birth and can actually make a safer delivery for many conditions such as shoulder dystocia (babys shoulders are stuck). She just wasn't comfortable delivering like that probably because most of her patients have epidurals. if i have another baby i will definitely be making the drive back to my old practice in the city. don't go to dr. thomas if you want a natural unmedicated birth. read more
