After years of "unexplained" infertility and four failed IUI procedures, it was a breath of fresh air to meet with Dr. Chen. From the very beginning, Dr. Chen listened to my medical history--heavy periods, pain, and GI issues. He was affirming and said it sounded like endometriosis. Dr. Chen was attentive, kind, and added a dose of humour in his care. I was very nervous for the first call with him, just because of my experience of not being taken seriously about my pain before. Dr. Chen is the kindest and most caring healthcare professional I've ever met. It feels like he actually sees you as a human being and not just another nameless patient, which has been the case in a lot of my previous gynecological care. I traveled from SoCal to have my surgery with him while the strikes were going on and he helped me be seen as soon as possible. I was fortunate and feel blessed to have been connected with Dr. Chen. After years of extreme discomfort from menistation/ fibroids that took over my entire uterus and a day when the heavy flow would not stop lead me to a path that would end with Dr. Chen. Of course many details inbetween but, irrelevant to this review. My first phone call/intro to Dr. Chen provided me with confidence in his ability to help me. He was so easy to talk to, he listened, he cared, he wanted to help! Yes, he was eager to provide me with a better way of life. I can truly testify to this after years of misery. Soon after our call, I went into the office for an exam. He was very approachable and easy going (helps with the nerves) yet, professional and extremely educated about his speciality practice. This exam and discussion had me beeming with confidence that I had finally found the right doctor for me. Well, I might even say that he found me because, my case was to be a complicated procedure and other doctors expressed their inability to help without cutting my torso like a T from top to bottom to remove the small watermelon and orange sized fibroids that took over my uterus. Day of procedure I got scared once I laid on the operating table, I actually shed a few tears in fear as I haven't had surgery to that degree before. I spent years believing my pain and symptoms were normal because that's what I was told. After being told by my OBGYN and fertility doctor that I most likely had endometriosis but "not to worry," I researched and was incredibly lucky to find Dr. Chen. From my first appointment I felt truly heard--he took me seriously and made the whole process smooth, even though I had to travel outside my home region. He made me feel important, not just a name to check off. This was my first surgery and I was nervous, but Dr. Chen has a way of putting you at ease. I ultimately needed a colon resection as well, and he teamed up with Dr. Ajayi for a seven-hour surgery. I was originally being seen by another physician who diagnosed me with an isthmocele/c-section defect. According to this physician this was something not well researched and she did not have a lot of information or answers for me but offered to refer me to Dr.Chen. Although there was a bit of a wait for my initial consultation with Dr.Chen, I quickly realized that wait was worth it. Dr.Chen was extremely knowledgeable, patient and understanding. He explained everything in detail to me and answered other questions other doctors could not. He went over everything in complete detail and not once did I feel rushed or misunderstood. It was a breath of fresh air. I decided to proceed with the laparoscopic repair for my isthmocele. I was booked for my procedure in a very timely manner. On the day of, I was by myself in pre-op and pretty nervous. My pre op nurse was amazing, she made me feel as if I was there with a friend. I am beyond grateful for having been referred to Dr. Chen. I've had countless appointments for debilitating cramps, migraines, constipation, and sever pelvic pain off and on for the past 25 years. I was at the point where I couldn't take the pain anymore and was ready for a hysterectomy at 45 years old. A friend referred me to her NP is Oakland which is almost an hour from my home and the drive was worth it. She ordered an ultrasound which came back that I had an endometrioma on one ovary and referred me to Dr. Chen, praising him as he specializes in Endometriosis. Dr. Chen ordered an MRI and went over the results with me. He explained everything clearly to my husband and I and made me feel heard. From the MRI, he found a mass that was pushing on my colon and consulted a General Surgeon, Dr. Ajayi for a colon resection. Dr. Chen prepared me for the worst case scenario of going home with a colostomy bag. Although it was scary to think the damage was that serious, I appreciated him talking it over with me and addressing my concerns. This was my first time having surgery. I didn't start getting scared until they wheeled me into surgery. I couldn't stop crying, I suppose it was the fear. Dr. Chen held my hand and the staff took turns telling jokes for a few minutes until I went under. That helped to take my mind off what was going to happen and it calmed me because it made me feel that they saw me as a person and not just a procedure to complete. This was the first major surgery I ever had. I had been putting this procedure off for a few years due to another doctor recommending a full hysterectomy, among other things. Dr. Chen was very patient, kind, easygoing, and knowledgeable when it came to my situation. He made the least invasive incisions and never once hinted at a hysterectomy, except as a very last life saving option, which he felt was unlikely. During my appointments with him and his team, if I had questions, I felt they were answered honestly. He had great bedside manner, ensured I had appropriate pain management after my procedure, and his team was thorough and kind during the days leading up to my procedure. Although this was a major surgery, I was still able to go home the same day, and Dr. Chen still called the next day (Saturday) to check on me. Dealing with endometriosis for many years has never been easy and what's made it even more difficult was the lack of proper care and knowledge from standard obgyn doctors. After some time I wanted to find someone who knew the ins and outs of this disease. I found out about Dr Chen on an endometriosis focused facebook group. I immediately searched for a way to contact him which was a bit tricky solely because I am located in southern california which he only practices in northern california. I found a way to call the kaiser out there and figure things out. Once I had my first phone appointment with him I immediately felt seen, I wasn't dismissed and I was able to discuss every symptom without being cut off or downplayed. We decided to move forward with surgery because my previous ablation surgery (with another provider) was causing problems. He took the time to discuss every aspect of surgery such as pre/post op care, consent forms, as well as informing me of the procedure itself in detail. He answered every question I had and gave me new information I didn't know about endometriosis. Fast forward to the day of the surgery, his care team made sure that I was taken care of and informed I really applaud the medical staff at Kaiser Oakland. I had an amazing experience, even in the operating room the staff were constantly reassuring me and talking to me and making silly jokes. I'm 12 weeks post surgery today and feeling great! In my first appointment with Dr. Chen, he took his time - he listened to my whole history, was kind, answered all the does-this-doc-really-understand-endo questions very well and with zero ego, helped me weigh the pros and cons with transparency, and won my trust. As imaging (MRI/CT) came in, he called to discuss the results with me - I have never had a doctor be so attentive! I had three virtual appointments, about an hour each, before my surgery. The experience at the surgical center was excellent. Every staff member was SO NICE. From the anesthesiologist to the students/trainees/residents I consented to observe my surgery, all stopped to greet me and make me feel important. Dr. Chen kneeled beside me and held my hand as the anesthesia took effect, which felt incredibly comforting in a moment with lots of emotion! I woke up on the other side and was cared for so attentively by my nurse. She never left my side for the three hours I was in the recovery room. Dr. Chen called me the next day (on a Saturday!) to check in and discuss the procedure and findings, and reached out several times during the next few weeks to see how I was doing and discuss wound care. Wow, where do I begin. Dr. Chen may be one of the best doctors I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and during a really scary time in my life no less. He is one of the most responsive, attentive, and thorough doctors I have worked with. I came to know Dr. Chen, because I was sent to the ER with a ruptured ovarian cyst that needed immediate surgery. He happened to be the surgeon on duty. You know you have a good doctor when the nurses On staff here you have Dr. Chen and then tell you, "oh my goodness. Lucky you! He's amazing and you're in good hands!" over and over again. I'm especially lucky, because I didn't know that I had endometriosis, and this surgeon I happened to be paired with happens to be an endometriosis expert. I'm so fortunate, and he did an incredible job on my surgery. I had dramatically less pain than I did prior, and feel so much better now than I did before the surgery. I especially appreciated that Dr. Chen followed up with me immediately after the surgery, and when I had a few issues come up afterwards, he checked in multiple times daily. **Disclaimer, this is a long one. But I had to praise these amazing doctors** After years of suffering with what I now know was stage 4 endometriosis and feeling dismissed by doctors, I am beyond grateful to have found Dr. Chen and Dr. Tolan. Their expertise, compassion, and commitment to helping find answers was life changing for me. Dr. Chen is an exceptional endometriosis specialist. He truly listened to my symptoms, validated my experience, and explained my treatment options with clarity and patience. He scheduled multiple appointments with me before surgery and was so quick to answer any questions I had that came up along the way. For the first time, I felt seen and hopeful. He works closely with Dr. Tolan, an expert colorectal surgeon, and together they crafted a thorough, thoughtful surgical plan that addressed my deep infiltrating endometriosis, including involvement of the bowel which ended up being stage 4 with a bowel obstruction. Side note- I also had a colonoscopy done beforehand where they could not even complete the colonoscopy with a pediatric scope due to the mass obstructing my bowels which turned out to be deep infiltrating endometriosis. After seeing the results from my colonoscopy, Dr. Chen and Dr. Tolan were the only ones to actually take the time to re-do and analyze my MRI and CT scan deeper to see that there actually was something there that was missed by other doctors. My robotic-assisted excision surgery, bowel resection and appendectomy were incredibly well-coordinated. The level of skill, precision, and care both surgeons and their teams brought to my case was amazing. Dr. Chen made me feel so calm and well taken care of before surgery even holding my hand before going under anesthesia. My husband, who is a first responder had nothing but great things to say about Dr. Chen and how Dr. Chen kept him in the loop before and during surgery. My husband truly felt I was in the best hands. Recovery was smoother than I expected, which I know is due to the skills of both Dr. Chen and Dr. Tolan. Update: I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant!!!! My husband and I waited the recommended 3 cycles after surgery and I got pregnant on the first try (while also using ovulation tracking sticks). I recently had an ultrasound through my perinatal specialist and she confirmed that the scar is healing spectacularly... so much so that she can hardly see it in my uterus even though I'm also pregnant. I have my life back! Thanks to Dr. Chen and his amazing team! Dr. Chen is the most compassionate, kindest, knowledgeable and the most experienced Endo surgeon I have been with! Prior to Dr. Chen, I had my first laproscopic surgery with Dr. Nezhat back in April 2024, but received very minimal feedback and little directions for long term impact of my endometriosis. Fast forward after my first surgery with Dr. Nezhat, within 6 months my condition worsen in my lower left abdominal. I also began to experience abnormal spotting/bleeding every day. I have aggressive and severe stage endometriosis, however this pain I experienced was so debilitating and different from what I normally felt - it took a toll on my daily life where I couldn't eat, sleep, unhealthy amount of weight loss, difficult or absent bowel movements. Quickly, I needed a second opinion from another Endo specialist and that's when I was referred to Dr. Chen at Kaiser. Soon as I met Dr. Chen, OMG! a breath of fresh air! He provided proper care, deep assessment and careful review of my blood work and MRI results. In preparation for my second laproscopic surgery (but first time with Dr. Chen), we discovered that the debilitating pain from my lower left abdominal was a ruptured fallopian tube. There was numerous amount of scarring from the first surgery and build up of fluid in the fallopian tube overtime that lead to a severely blocked tube, causing it to rupture. (Literally looked like a bomb exploded) Another discovery was a uterine fibroid that caused the abnormal bleeding every day. The two had to be removed, all I wanted is to live pain free. I am so grateful for Dr. Chen who courageously took me in under his care within a short notice and even took me in after having prior surgery with Dr. Nezhat. I recovered quickly and healed amazingly! Dr. Chen continued to check in on me post lap surgery and allowed me to keep him posted after my first reproductive cycle if there is any reccurrence of the pain. Dr. Chen saved my life! He performed my surgery earlier this year in July. No doctors at Kaiser would take my endometriosis seriously since I was diagnosed in 2020 through my first laparoscopy. I tried so hard to manage but it became so unbearable I was in the ER and at my OBGYN office crying literal tears begging for help. My OBGYN referred me to Chen because my endometriosis pain had gotten out of control! I was at stage 4 and spreading to my intestines and andenomyosis! I was scared especially because I'm still in my 20's and have not had kids yet! I was worried about my fertility since I wasn't on birth control and had not conceived. but Dr Chen is soooooo attentive and knows his stuff when it comes to endometriosis. I'm glad I didn't need a hysterectomy. From the first time I met him he showed genuine concern and urgency of the matter! He immediately scheduled my MRI and colonoscopy and blood work/ultrasounds. He even put me on progesterone to keep my condition from spreading while I waited for surgery. He even put me on to support groups for endometriosis! Super thorough doctor he's even mentioned in the Nancy's nook group! He's def the best endometriosis doctor at Kaiser Oakland as I have seen another back in 2020 and she SUCKED. I feel like my condition would not have spread that bad and I would still have my left tube if all doctors took endometriosis seriously and treated the condition sooner! As we all know endometriosis affects fertility. Anyways results of the labs and tests Chen ordered led us to seeing I needed an excision laparoscopy with left tube removal, Dr Chen wasted no time and had the most sense of urgency. He got me in as soon as possible. So glad I didn't not wake up with a ostomy bag! This was the most devastating hardest most painful journey I have been through in my life and I could not have made it out on the other side without Chen! I even waited to write this review to see how I healed up and readjusted to life and having my cycle back because I stopped taking the hormone suppressants a few months after surgery once I was healed up. Cycles are shorter and less painful. I used to be incapacitated for dayssss couldn't stand or walk mad bloated and heavy flow for 7-8 days. Now I'm 4-5 days moderate flow but less pain and taking tinctures has helped with pain management as well. I also did pelvic floor therapy because mine was shot from years of pain and tension from endometriosis. That helped a lot as well as post op acupuncture! We are what we eat and lifestyle/diet change along with Dr.Chen def saved my life! No gluten no dairy no red meat no soy! Even now! I've always been healthy (fresh pressed juice and ginger shot daily along with a glass of herbal tea daily) but now I'm even more on top of it! My only input is they need to offer other treatments besides hormone suppression. I know they believe in suppressing your hormones through progesterone but I don't like synthetic things in my body and I'm learned blocking your hormones isn't the way. It blocks your divine connection to the moon and Mother Nature (28 day cycle and such) and in general just makes you feel "off" for lack of better words. It's nice not having full periods and cramps but it comes with its negatives as well like constant spotting, dryness, and lack of sex drive. The key is to BALANCE the hormones through natural progesterone cream, castor oil packs and acupuncture for pain management and chasteberry/dongquai/ginger and other herbs for your cycle. Buttt that's if your condition is manageable mine was so far gone but now that I had the excision surgery I am able to use natural remedies to manage. Western medicine can be helpful, so all my natural hippy girls know you can trust doctor Chen. I know there is no cure for our disease but we are warriors and with more research and more doctors like Chen we are getting somewhere as this is becoming a very common occurring inflammatory disease in women with women of color being least likely to be diagnosed. I am now an advocate for women of color with endometriosis and I'm glad to say if you need treatment Doctor Chen is your guy! He has a true passion in healing endometriosis that even links him personally through his own experiences in life with it (ask him the story) and I find when you truly care about something that's when you make the most difference. Before working with Dr. Chen, I had been seeking a medical explanation for incredibly debilitating rectal pain and bleeding for a few months. During these months, some of the more "specialized" services I received were a pelvic ultrasound which did not detect any disease (my endometriosis was not in the most common areas), a sigmoidoscopy which couldn't be completed, and a colonoscopy which again, was unable to be fully performed. I began working with Dr. Chen after being referred to him by another OB-GYN (after she decisively ascertained that I didn't have endometriosis!) During my first appointment with Dr. Chen, he ordered an MRI. Once the MRI was fulfilled and I had received the written results from the radiologist, Dr. Chen promptly called me to thoroughly explain the results and to inform me of the next steps (in office visit, suppression, laparoscopic excision surgery, including a bowel resection with a colorectal surgeon). During my in office visit, Dr. Chen performed another pelvic ultrasound in which he easily and very clearly detected vast amounts of endometriosis lesions. He also showed me my MRI and extensively educated me about my case, including statistics and probabilities. He took the time to answer all of my questions and also allowed time for me to think since at some points I was left rather dumbstruck trying to process the bowel resection portion of the laparoscopy surgery. During the many appointments with Dr. Chen, it was evident that he strongly collaborates with the different departments at Kaiser. He was very knowledgeable about the different appointments I was having outside of his. Once I finally went through with the surgery, it was exactly as Dr. Chen had initially described it to me when he called me about the MRI result months before. I felt as though the entire OB-GYN and colorectal team were very prepared and everything went smoothly. During recovery, Dr. Chen checked in on me multiple times while I stayed at the hospital and once I got discharged. Last but not least, aside from his knowledge about endometriosis, the principal quality that I appreciate about Dr. Chen is the fact that I never once felt rushed during any of our appointments together. I had been especially accustomed to speaking at 1.5x speed for most of the medical appointments I've ever had. To the women and young girls dealing with endometriosis I want to tell you that you are not alone! For many many years, I stayed quiet and dealt with all the excruciating pain endometriosis has brought me. I couldn't understand how or why this has happened to me of all people. Once I hit my 35 I started paying more attention to my body and started recognizing a pattern with my pain that started during my cycle. As the months passed it the pain got worse and worse. I found myself in the emergency room every month to having to go every single week. Finally there was one doctor who understood my pain and diagnosed me with endometriosis and did all she could to educate me on it. I was told to follow up with my OB-GYN which I did. She recommended me to get on birth control but she knew I was also trying to conceive so she said if I was to get pregnant then the pain would go away. Well lord knows I tried and tried and continued to deal with the pain until enough was enough for me. I realized this was taking a toll on me so I had to make the decision. I started talking to a fertility nurse who was very knowledgeable and also gave me several options which helped me feel that I still have a chance to conceive. Long story short I decided to have the surgery to have the endometriosis removed so that I wouldn't have to deal with the pain. This is when I met the most knowledgeable and wonderful Dr. Chen! Let me tell you when I say from the conversations to him explaining to me in detail his practice and how the procedure would go. He was very confident, caring, open, honest, and very straightforward with me. He is very trustworthy and made me feel very comfortable every step of the way. After surgery he made sure to check in on me and see how I am doing. I have never had such a wonderful experience dealing with surgery or any type services I've encountered throughout the years of me dealing with endometriosis. I have so many great things to say about Dr. Chen and I personally have had nothing but a great experience with him. I have been pain free of endometriosis for five months now and have not had to go to the hospital or take any medications since.
