My youngest leaving her mark on the sand off of Anglin Square.
    Marie M.

Over fifteen years ago, I worked at a law firm in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. During the summer, my teenagers would ride to work with me once a week. I'd drop them off at the "four corners" (that's what they called it) and go to the office. At lunch time, I would join them and have a beach picnic on the sand--go back to work and then pick them up to ride home, or occasionally stay around for a good steak, seafood dinner, or eat Japanese at Benihana. As a single mom of four at the time, I couldn't offer my children a cruise or a vacation, so realizing that we lived close enough to "paradise," we had a weekly beach day that we all looked forward to, as Anglin Square has always been delightful! Since then, one of my daughters married and providentially, she resides in LBTS with her husband and my grand baby. Therefore, I still get to visit Anglin's quite often and frankly, it never gets old. City leaders, law enforcement, and the chamber of commerce have done a superb job of planning, and among other things, they have kept the very young [sometimes reckless] crowds away, while still attracting plenty of tourism, as well as the local residents. At Anglin's, we always feel safe, even to drive there alone at night. I would say you come across people in their forties/fifties and couples of all ages who find it quite intimate and even romantic. You will also encounter the occasional young family with small children. :) If bar hopping is more your style, there are other great beaches south of LBTS. There's always something happening all year round and weather permitting, they have live music, dancing and other activities. You can park your car and rent bicycles to ride thru town, or go fishing on the pier. We also love going to Anglin's for the winterfest boat parade on the intracoastal and for fireworks. It's an amazing view to watch their display on the sand, while taking a gander to the right and left at the displays of nearby cities--it's spectacular! (see my Tip for the website address). Foodies find satiety from among a selection of American, Italian, Greek, and Caribbean restaurants, or from Vietnamese flair down the street. Smaller bites, pizza and subs are available at a hoagie joint, a deli, and a specialty bakery. You can also go into the local pub for drinks and billiards. If you're like me with more than one sweet tooth, you can hop or skip into Kilwins, Sloan's, or a gelateria to savor the best ice-cream and desserts in SOFLO. There's such a plethora of leisure too! Smoke quality cigars at a cigar lounge that offers ports, wines and crafts. Sip a robust cup of coffee or an aromatic tea blend at another spot, or just sit al fresco and people watch (because that's not creepy kids). ;D Within a short distance, you have a great choice of places to shop at; including jewelry, antiques, boutique clothing and accessories, as well as a large souvenirs and gifts store. There's also an array of backdrops to take selfies, or better yet, have an artist sketch one for you on the sidewalk. Finally, if you want to swim, frolic or relax on the sand, you'll always find a spot for you and yours just a few steps off Anglin Square.

It feels much more relaxed and less crowded than Fort Lauderdale Beach. Right across from the beach, the main strip along Commercial Blvd has a bunch of restaurants, bars, ice cream spots, and small local shops. It's very walkable and has that classic laid-back Florida beach town vibe. We loved just strolling around after the beach, grabbing food, and enjoying the atmosphere. If you want a quieter, charming beach area with plenty to do but without the chaos, this is definitely worth visiting.

My contact at the town, however, told me that the grassy area used to be a parking lot years ago and most of the amenities were added within the last ten years. There's resident permit parking right out front and metered parking just across the street. As you walk along the sidewalk there are colorfully painted Adirondack chairs -- two per -- under umbrellas. And a shade pavilion with chairs. At the beach entrance are various signs with information. No dogs are allowed nor is cigarette smoking on the beach. The park is open 7 am - 10 pm. There's a display with life jackets hanging from it in case someone needs to borrow one. And some info re rip currents and water safety. Two shower towers are at the entrance, too. There are bottom water spouts for washing the sand off your feet after the beach, as well. One of the nicest things was the beach access path. There are two entrances to the beach and one is covered in a hard mesh -- perfect for wheel chairs or wheeled carts or if you have trouble walking. I took a short walk out to the beach itself. It's wide with clean, white sand here. Mid week it wasn't busy with visitors. Talk about a "chamber of commerce" picture! I couldn't resist taking a short video. We truly live in paradise and this park proves it.

The portals were all named in honor of prominent community members. This portal was named after Laura Cheek Ward, who was a town administrator in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea from 2000 to 2005. Laura was known for being able to get things done. She was able to raise 2 million dollars to turn five streets in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea that were ugly dead ends at the ocean into landscaped beach portals, one of which was named in her honor. Laura Ward passed away in 2008 at the age of 68 from cancer. There is also a plaza along the New River in Ft. Lauderdale named after her. This beach portal is located at the intersection of El Mar Drive and Washingtonia. Before you enter the beach there is an open green space, benches and a picnic table. Limited metered park is available nearby. On the beach there is a sign for the SS Copenhagen, a shipwreck that rests on a reef in 16 to 30 feet of water making it perfect for snorkels and divers. The beach is a beautiful stretch of sand perfect for sunbathing and swimming.
